“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.1Μὴ ταρασσέσθω ὑμῶν καρδία πιστεύετε εἰς τὸν Θεόν καὶ εἰς ἐμὲ πιστεύετε
There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?2ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ τοῦ Πατρός μου μοναὶ πολλαί εἰσιν εἰ δὲ μή εἶπον ἂν ὑμῖν ὅτι πορεύομαι ἑτοιμάσαι τόπον ὑμῖν
When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.3καὶ ἐὰν πορευθῶ καὶ ἑτοιμάσω τόπον ὑμῖν πάλιν ἔρχομαι καὶ παραλήμψομαι ὑμᾶς πρὸς ἐμαυτόν ἵνα ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ καὶ ὑμεῖς ἦτε
And you know the way to where I am going.”4καὶ ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω οἴδατε τὴν ὁδόν
“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”5Λέγει αὐτῷ Θωμᾶς Κύριε οὐκ οἴδαμεν ποῦ ὑπάγεις πῶς δυνάμεθα* τὴν ὁδὸν ‹εἰδέναι›
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.6Λέγει αὐτῷ ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁδὸς καὶ ἀλήθεια καὶ ζωή οὐδεὶς ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα εἰ μὴ δι’ ἐμοῦ
If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”7εἰ ἐγνώκειτέ με καὶ τὸν Πατέρα μου ‹ἂν ᾔδειτε› ἀπ’ ἄρτι γινώσκετε αὐτὸν καὶ ἑωράκατε ‹αὐτόν›
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”8Λέγει αὐτῷ Φίλιππος Κύριε δεῖξον ἡμῖν τὸν Πατέρα καὶ ἀρκεῖ ἡμῖν
Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?9Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Τοσούτῳ* χρόνῳ* μεθ’ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωκάς με Φίλιππε ἑωρακὼς ἐμὲ ἑώρακεν τὸν Πατέρα πῶς σὺ λέγεις Δεῖξον ἡμῖν τὸν Πατέρα
Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me.10οὐ πιστεύεις ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ Πατρὶ καὶ Πατὴρ ἐν ἐμοί ἐστιν τὰ ῥήματα ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐ λαλῶ δὲ Πατὴρ ἐν ἐμοὶ μένων ποιεῖ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ
Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.11πιστεύετέ μοι ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ Πατρὶ καὶ Πατὴρ ἐν ἐμοί εἰ δὲ μή διὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτὰ πιστεύετε
“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.12Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ τὰ ἔργα ἐγὼ ποιῶ κἀκεῖνος ποιήσει καὶ μείζονα τούτων ποιήσει ὅτι ἐγὼ πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα πορεύομαι
You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.13καὶ ὅ¦τι ἂν αἰτήσητε ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου τοῦτο ποιήσω ἵνα δοξασθῇ Πατὴρ ἐν τῷ Υἱῷ
Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit14ἐάν τι αἰτήσητέ με ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου ἐγὼ ποιήσω
“If you love me, obey my commandments.15Ἐὰν ἀγαπᾶτέ με τὰς ἐντολὰς τὰς ἐμὰς τηρήσετε
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.16Κἀγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν Πατέρα καὶ ἄλλον Παράκλητον δώσει ὑμῖν ἵνα «μεθ’ ὑμῶν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα»
He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.17τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας κόσμος οὐ δύναται λαβεῖν ὅτι οὐ θεωρεῖ αὐτὸ οὐδὲ γινώσκει ὑμεῖς γινώσκετε αὐτό ὅτι παρ’ ὑμῖν μένει καὶ ἐν ὑμῖν ἔσται
No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.18Οὐκ ἀφήσω ὑμᾶς ὀρφανούς ἔρχομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς
Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live.19ἔτι μικρὸν καὶ κόσμος με οὐκέτι θεωρεῖ ὑμεῖς δὲ θεωρεῖτέ με ὅτι ἐγὼ ζῶ καὶ ὑμεῖς ζήσετε
When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.20ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ γνώσεσθε ὑμεῖς ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ Πατρί μου καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐν ἐμοὶ κἀγὼ ἐν ὑμῖν
Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”21 ἔχων τὰς ἐντολάς μου καὶ τηρῶν αὐτὰς ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν ἀγαπῶν με δὲ ἀγαπῶν με ἀγαπηθήσεται ὑπὸ τοῦ Πατρός μου κἀγὼ ἀγαπήσω αὐτὸν καὶ ἐμφανίσω αὐτῷ ἐμαυτόν
Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?”22Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰούδας οὐχ Ἰσκαριώτης Κύριε καὶ τί γέγονεν ὅτι ἡμῖν μέλλεις ἐμφανίζειν σεαυτὸν καὶ οὐχὶ τῷ κόσμῳ
Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.23Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἐάν τις ἀγαπᾷ με τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσει καὶ Πατήρ μου ἀγαπήσει αὐτόν καὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐλευσόμεθα καὶ μονὴν παρ’ αὐτῷ ποιησόμεθα
Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me.24 μὴ ἀγαπῶν με τοὺς λόγους μου οὐ τηρεῖ καὶ λόγος ὃν ἀκούετε οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸς ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαντός με Πατρός
I am telling you these things now while I am still with you.25Ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν παρ’ ὑμῖν μένων
But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.26 δὲ Παράκλητος τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον πέμψει Πατὴρ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου ἐκεῖνος ὑμᾶς διδάξει πάντα καὶ ὑπομνήσει ὑμᾶς πάντα εἶπον ὑμῖν ἐγώ
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.27Εἰρήνην ἀφίημι ὑμῖν εἰρήνην τὴν ἐμὴν δίδωμι ὑμῖν οὐ καθὼς κόσμος δίδωσιν ἐγὼ δίδωμι ὑμῖν μὴ ταρασσέσθω ὑμῶν καρδία μηδὲ δειλιάτω
Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am.28ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐγὼ εἶπον ὑμῖν Ὑπάγω καὶ ἔρχομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς εἰ ἠγαπᾶτέ με ἐχάρητε ἄν ὅτι πορεύομαι πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα ὅτι Πατὴρ μείζων μού ἐστιν
I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe.29καὶ νῦν εἴρηκα ὑμῖν πρὶν γενέσθαι ἵνα ὅταν γένηται πιστεύσητε
“I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me,30Οὐκέτι πολλὰ λαλήσω μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἔρχεται γὰρ τοῦ κόσμου ἄρχων καὶ ἐν ἐμοὶ οὐκ ἔχει οὐδέν
but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father.
