1As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.

1Καὶ παράγων εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον τυφλὸν ἐκ γενετῆς

2“Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”

2καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Ῥαββί τίς ἥμαρτεν οὗτος ἢ οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ

3 “It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.

3Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὔτε οὗτος ἥμαρτεν οὔτε οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ

4 We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.

4ἡμᾶς δεῖ ἐργάζεσθαι τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πέμψαντός με ἕως ἡμέρα ἐστίν ἔρχεται νὺξ ὅτε οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐργάζεσθαι

5 But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.”

5ὅταν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ὦ φῶς εἰμι τοῦ κόσμου

6Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes.

6Ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἔπτυσεν χαμαὶ καὶ ἐποίησεν πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος καὶ ἐπέχρισεν* αὐτοῦ τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς

7He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!

7καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὕπαγε νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται Ἀπεσταλμένος ἀπῆλθεν οὖν καὶ ἐνίψατο καὶ ἦλθεν βλέπων

8His neighbors and others who knew him as a blind beggar asked each other, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?”

8Οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον ὅτι προσαίτης ἦν ἔλεγον Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν

9Some said he was, and others said, “No, he just looks like him!” But the beggar kept saying, “Yes, I am the same one!”

9Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὗτός ἐστιν ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὐχί ἀλλὰ ὅμοιος αὐτῷ ἐστιν Ἐκεῖνος ἔλεγεν ὅτι Ἐγώ εἰμι

10They asked, “Who healed you? What happened?”

10Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ Πῶς οὖν ἠνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί

11He told them, “The man they call Jesus made mud and spread it over my eyes and told me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash yourself.’ So I went and washed, and now I can see!”

11Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος Ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησεν καὶ ἐπέχρισέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ εἶπέν μοι ὅτι Ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν Σιλωὰμ καὶ νίψαι ἀπελθὼν οὖν καὶ νιψάμενος ἀνέβλεψα

12“Where is he now?” they asked. “I don’t know,” he replied.

12Καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος Λέγει Οὐκ οἶδα

13Then they took the man who had been blind to the Pharisees,

13Ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους τόν ποτε τυφλόν

14because it was on the Sabbath that Jesus had made the mud and healed him.

14ἦν δὲ σάββατον ἐν ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ τὸν πηλὸν ἐποίησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἀνέῳξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς

15The Pharisees asked the man all about it. So he told them, “He put the mud over my eyes, and when I washed it away, I could see!”

15πάλιν οὖν ἠρώτων αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πηλὸν ἐπέθηκέν μου ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς καὶ ἐνιψάμην καὶ βλέπω

16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man Jesus is not from God, for he is working on the Sabbath.” Others said, “But how could an ordinary sinner do such miraculous signs?” So there was a deep division of opinion among them.

16Ἔλεγον οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές Οὐκ ἔστιν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὅτι τὸ σάββατον οὐ τηρεῖ Ἄλλοι [δὲ] ἔλεγον Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν Καὶ σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς

17Then the Pharisees again questioned the man who had been blind and demanded, “What’s your opinion about this man who healed you?” The man replied, “I think he must be a prophet.”

17λέγουσιν οὖν τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν Τί σὺ λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ὅτι Προφήτης ἐστίν

18The Jewish leaders still refused to believe the man had been blind and could now see, so they called in his parents.

18Οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ ἀνέβλεψεν ἕως ὅτου ἐφώνησαν τοὺς γονεῖς αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀναβλέψαντος

19They asked them, “Is this your son? Was he born blind? If so, how can he now see?”

19καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς ὑμῶν ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη πῶς οὖν βλέπει ἄρτι

20His parents replied, “We know this is our son and that he was born blind,

20Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπαν Οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς ἡμῶν καὶ ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη

21but we don’t know how he can see or who healed him. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.”

21πῶς δὲ νῦν βλέπει οὐκ οἴδαμεν ἢ τίς ἤνοιξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἡμεῖς οὐκ οἴδαμεν αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε ἡλικίαν ἔχει αὐτὸς περὶ ἑαυτοῦ λαλήσει

22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who had announced that anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from the synagogue.

22Ταῦτα εἶπαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐφοβοῦντο τοὺς Ἰουδαίους ἤδη γὰρ συνετέθειντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἵνα ἐάν τις αὐτὸν ὁμολογήσῃ Χριστόν ἀποσυνάγωγος γένηται

23That’s why they said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”

23διὰ τοῦτο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ εἶπαν ὅτι Ἡλικίαν ἔχει αὐτὸν ἐπερωτήσατε

24So for the second time they called in the man who had been blind and told him, “God should get the glory for this, because we know this man Jesus is a sinner.”

24Ἐφώνησαν οὖν τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκ δευτέρου ὃς ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Δὸς δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν

25“I don’t know whether he is a sinner,” the man replied. “But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!”

25Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν ἐκεῖνος Εἰ ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν οὐκ οἶδα ἓν οἶδα ὅτι τυφλὸς ὢν ἄρτι βλέπω

26“But what did he do?” they asked. “How did he heal you?”

26Εἶπον* οὖν αὐτῷ Τί ἐποίησέν σοι πῶς ἤνοιξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς

27“Look!” the man exclaimed. “I told you once. Didn’t you listen? Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?”

27Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι

28Then they cursed him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!

28Καὶ ἐλοιδόρησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπον* Σὺ μαθητὴς εἶ ἐκείνου ἡμεῖς δὲ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐσμὲν μαθηταί

29We know God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.”

29ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι Μωϋσεῖ λελάληκεν ὁ Θεός τοῦτον δὲ οὐκ οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν

30“Why, that’s very strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don’t know where he comes from?

30Ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐν τούτῳ γὰρ τὸ θαυμαστόν ἐστιν ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστίν καὶ ἤνοιξέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς

31We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.

31οἴδαμεν ὅτι «ὁ Θεὸς» ἁμαρτωλῶν οὐκ ἀκούει ἀλλ’ ἐάν τις θεοσεβὴς ᾖ καὶ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιῇ τούτου ἀκούει

32Ever since the world began, no one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind.

32ἐκ τοῦ αἰῶνος οὐκ ἠκούσθη ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν τις ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλοῦ γεγεννημένου

33If this man were not from God, he couldn’t have done it.”

33εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ποιεῖν οὐδέν

34“You were born a total sinner!” they answered. “Are you trying to teach us?” And they threw him out of the synagogue. Spiritual Blindness

34Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω

35When Jesus heard what had happened, he found the man and asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man? ”

35Ἤκουσεν Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν εἶπεν Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου

36The man answered, “Who is he, sir? I want to believe in him.”

36Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν Καὶ τίς ἐστιν Κύριε ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν

37 “You have seen him,” Jesus said, “and he is speaking to you!”

37Εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτὸν καὶ ὁ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν

38“Yes, Lord, I believe!” the man said. And he worshiped Jesus.

38Ὁ δὲ ἔφη Πιστεύω Κύριε καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ

39Then Jesus told him, “I entered this world to render judgment—to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.”

39Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἰς κρίμα ἐγὼ εἰς τὸν κόσμον τοῦτον ἦλθον ἵνα οἱ μὴ βλέποντες βλέπωσιν καὶ οἱ βλέποντες τυφλοὶ γένωνται

40Some Pharisees who were standing nearby heard him and asked, “Are you saying we’re blind?”

40ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὄντες καὶ εἶπον* αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν

41 “If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty,” Jesus replied. “But you remain guilty because you claim you can see.

41Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἰ τυφλοὶ ἦτε οὐκ ἂν εἴχετε ἁμαρτίαν νῦν δὲ λέγετε ὅτι Βλέπομεν ἡ ἁμαρτία ὑμῶν μένει
