1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. Do not become teachers in large numbers, my brothers, since you know that we <i>who are teachers</i> will incur a stricter judgment. Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
2 We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body. For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same <i>is</i> a perfect man, <i>and</i> able also to bridle the whole body. For we all stumble in many <i>ways.</i> If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to rein in the whole body as well. We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can guide the whole animal. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their whole body as well. When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.
4 Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot is inclined. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. Behold also the ships, which though <i>they be</i> so great, and <i>are</i> driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Look at the ships too: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are <i>nevertheless</i> directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot determines. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
5 In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a spark sets a great forest ablaze. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! So also the tongue is a small part <i>of the body,</i> and <i>yet</i> it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. And the tongue <i>is</i> a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. And the tongue is a fire, the <i>very</i> world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set among our body’s parts as that which defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of <i>our</i> life, and is set on fire by hell. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind,
8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. But the tongue can no man tame; <i>it is</i> an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. But no one <i>among</i> mankind can tame the tongue; <i>it is</i> a restless evil, full of deadly poison. but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. With it we bless <i>our</i> Lord and Father, and with it we curse people, who have been made in the likeness of God; With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.
10 Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be! From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. from the same mouth come <i>both</i> blessing and cursing. My brothers <i>and sisters,</i> these things should not be this way. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet <i>water</i> and bitter? Does a spring send out from the same opening <i>both</i> fresh and bitter <i>water?</i> Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
12 My brothers, can a fig tree grow olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so <i>can</i> no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Can a fig tree, my brothers <i>and sisters,</i> bear olives, or a vine <i>bear</i> figs? Nor <i>can</i> salt water produce fresh. My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. Who <i>is</i> a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
14 But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and <i>so</i> lie against the truth. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.
15 Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but <i>is</i> earthly, sensual, devilish. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. For where envying and strife <i>is</i>, there <i>is</i> confusion and every evil work. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, <i>and</i> easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, free of hypocrisy. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
