English Standard VersionGreek Study Bible
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.1Γίνεσθε οὖν μιμηταὶ τοῦ Θεοῦ ὡς τέκνα ἀγαπητά
And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.2καὶ περιπατεῖτε ἐν ἀγάπῃ καθὼς καὶ Χριστὸς ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς* καὶ παρέδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν προσφορὰν καὶ θυσίαν τῷ Θεῷ εἰς ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας
But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.3Πορνεία δὲ καὶ ἀκαθαρσία πᾶσα πλεονεξία μηδὲ ὀνομαζέσθω ἐν ὑμῖν καθὼς πρέπει ἁγίοις
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.4καὶ αἰσχρότης καὶ μωρολογία εὐτραπελία οὐκ ἀνῆκεν ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον εὐχαριστία
For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.5τοῦτο γὰρ ἴστε γινώσκοντες ὅτι πᾶς πόρνος ἀκάθαρτος πλεονέκτης ἐστιν εἰδωλολάτρης οὐκ ἔχει κληρονομίαν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ Θεοῦ
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.6Μηδεὶς ὑμᾶς ἀπατάτω κενοῖς λόγοις διὰ ταῦτα γὰρ ἔρχεται ὀργὴ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῆς ἀπειθείας
Therefore do not become partners with them;7μὴ οὖν γίνεσθε συμμέτοχοι αὐτῶν
for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light8Ἦτε γάρ ποτε σκότος νῦν δὲ φῶς ἐν Κυρίῳ ὡς τέκνα φωτὸς περιπατεῖτε
(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),9 γὰρ καρπὸς τοῦ φωτὸς ἐν πάσῃ ἀγαθωσύνῃ καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ἀληθείᾳ
and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.10δοκιμάζοντες τί ἐστιν εὐάρεστον τῷ Κυρίῳ
Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.11Καὶ μὴ συνκοινωνεῖτε τοῖς ἔργοις τοῖς ἀκάρποις τοῦ σκότους μᾶλλον δὲ καὶ ἐλέγχετε
For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret.12τὰ γὰρ κρυφῇ γινόμενα ὑπ’ αὐτῶν αἰσχρόν ἐστιν καὶ λέγειν
But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible,13τὰ δὲ πάντα ἐλεγχόμενα ὑπὸ τοῦ φωτὸς φανεροῦται πᾶν γὰρ τὸ φανερούμενον φῶς ἐστιν
for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”14διὸ λέγει Ἔγειρε καθεύδων καὶ ἀνάστα ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ ἐπιφαύσει σοι Χριστός
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,15Βλέπετε οὖν ἀκριβῶς πῶς περιπατεῖτε μὴ ὡς ἄσοφοι ἀλλ’ ὡς σοφοί
making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.16ἐξαγοραζόμενοι τὸν καιρόν ὅτι αἱ ἡμέραι πονηραί εἰσιν
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.17διὰ τοῦτο μὴ γίνεσθε ἄφρονες ἀλλὰ συνίετε τί τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Κυρίου
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,18καὶ μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνῳ ἐν ἐστιν ἀσωτία ἀλλὰ πληροῦσθε ἐν Πνεύματι
addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,19λαλοῦντες ἑαυτοῖς [ἐν] ψαλμοῖς καὶ ὕμνοις καὶ ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς ᾄδοντες καὶ ψάλλοντες τῇ καρδίᾳ ὑμῶν τῷ Κυρίῳ
giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,20εὐχαριστοῦντες πάντοτε ὑπὲρ πάντων ἐν ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τῷ Θεῷ καὶ Πατρί
submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.21Ὑποτασσόμενοι ἀλλήλοις ἐν φόβῳ Χριστοῦ
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.22Αἱ γυναῖκες τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.23ὅτι ἀνήρ ἐστιν κεφαλὴ τῆς γυναικὸς ὡς καὶ Χριστὸς κεφαλὴ τῆς ἐκκλησίας αὐτὸς σωτὴρ τοῦ σώματος
Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.24ἀλλὰ ὡς ἐκκλησία ὑποτάσσεται τῷ Χριστῷ οὕτως καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες τοῖς ἀνδράσιν ἐν παντί
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,25Οἱ ἄνδρες ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας καθὼς καὶ Χριστὸς ἠγάπησεν τὴν ἐκκλησίαν καὶ ἑαυτὸν παρέδωκεν ὑπὲρ αὐτῆς
that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,26ἵνα αὐτὴν ἁγιάσῃ καθαρίσας τῷ λουτρῷ τοῦ ὕδατος ἐν ῥήματι
so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.27ἵνα παραστήσῃ αὐτὸς ἑαυτῷ ἔνδοξον τὴν ἐκκλησίαν μὴ ἔχουσαν σπίλον ῥυτίδα τι τῶν τοιούτων ἀλλ’ ἵνα ἁγία καὶ ἄμωμος
In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.28Οὕτως ὀφείλουσιν καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες ἀγαπᾶν τὰς ἑαυτῶν γυναῖκας ὡς τὰ ἑαυτῶν σώματα ἀγαπῶν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γυναῖκα ἑαυτὸν ἀγαπᾷ
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,29οὐδεὶς γάρ ποτε τὴν ἑαυτοῦ σάρκα ἐμίσησεν ἀλλὰ ἐκτρέφει καὶ θάλπει αὐτήν καθὼς καὶ Χριστὸς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν
because we are members of his body.30ὅτι μέλη ἐσμὲν τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ ⧼ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκ τῶν ὀστέων αὐτοῦ⧽
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”31Ἀντὶ τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ προσκολληθήσεται πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν
This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.32τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο μέγα ἐστίν ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω εἰς Χριστὸν καὶ εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν
However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.33πλὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς οἱ καθ’ ἕνα ἕκαστος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γυναῖκα οὕτως ἀγαπάτω ὡς ἑαυτόν δὲ γυνὴ ἵνα φοβῆται τὸν ἄνδρα
