Therefore it says, “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE <i>THE</i> CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO PEOPLE.” This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.”
9 What does “He ascended” mean, except that He also descended to the lower parts of the earth? (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? (Now this <i>expression,</i> “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?
10 He who descended is the very One who ascended above all the heavens, in order to fill all things. He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ. until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming. so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. That we <i>henceforth</i> be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, <i>and</i> cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of people, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.
15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, <i>even</i> Christ: but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all <i>aspects</i> into Him who is the head, <i>that is,</i> Christ, Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
16 From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love through the work of each individual part. from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, So I say this, and affirm in the Lord, that you are to no longer walk just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their minds, So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.
18 They are darkened in their understanding and alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 Having lost all sense of shame, they have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity, with a craving for more. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. and they, having become callous, have given themselves up to indecent behavior for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
20 But this is not the way you came to know Christ. But that is not the way you learned Christ!— But ye have not so learned Christ; But you did not learn Christ in this way, That, however, is not the way of life you learned
21 Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him— in keeping with the truth that is in Jesus— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.
22 to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; that, in reference to your former way of life, you are to rid yourselves of the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
23 to be renewed in the spirit of your minds; and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that you are to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, to be made new in the attitude of your minds;
24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in TRUE righteousness and holiness. and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. and to put on the new self, which in <i>the likeness of</i> God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one another. Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Therefore, ridding yourselves of falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE <i>OF YOU</i> WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, because we are parts of one another. Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
26 “Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun set upon your anger, Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: BE ANGRY, AND <i>YET</i> DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger, “In your anger do not sin|: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
27 and do not give the devil a foothold. and give no opportunity to the devil. Neither give place to the devil. and do not give the devil an opportunity. and do not give the devil a foothold.
28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need. Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with <i>his</i> hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. The one who steals must no longer steal; but rather he must labor, producing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have <i>something</i> to share with the one who has need. Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.
29 Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but if <i>there is</i> any good <i>word</i> for edification according to the need <i>of the moment, say that,</i> so that it will give grace to those who hear. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: All bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander must be removed from you, along with all malice. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
32 Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
