Blessed [be]
the
God
and
Father
of our
Lord
Jesus
Christ!
By
His
great
mercy
[He]
has given us new birth
into
a living
hope
through
[the] resurrection
of Jesus
Christ
from
[the] dead,

Θεὸς

κατὰ

πολὺ

ἀναγεννήσας
ἡμᾶς

ἐλπίδα

ἀναστάσεως
Ἰησοῦ

ἐκ
νεκρῶν

[and] into
an inheritance [that is]
imperishable,
undefiled,
and
unfading,
reserved
in
heaven
for
you,

εἰς
κληρονομίαν
ἄφθαρτον
καὶ
ἀμίαντον
καὶ
ἀμάραντον
τετηρημένην
ἐν
οὐρανοῖς
εἰς
ὑμᾶς

who
through
faith
[are] protected
by
God’s
power
for
[the] salvation
[that is] ready
to be revealed
in
[the] last
time.

τοὺς
ἐν
δυνάμει
Θεοῦ
φρουρουμένους
διὰ
πίστεως
εἰς
σωτηρίαν
ἑτοίμην
ἀποκαλυφθῆναι
ἐν
καιρῷ
ἐσχάτῳ

In
this
you greatly rejoice,
though
now
for a little while
you may
have had
to suffer grief
in
various
trials,

ἐν
ᾧ
ἀγαλλιᾶσθε
ὀλίγον
ἄρτι
εἰ
δέον
[ἐστὶν]
λυπηθέντες
ἐν
ποικίλοις
πειρασμοῖς
7
so that
the
authenticity
of your
faith—
more precious
than gold,
which
perishes
even though
refined
by
fire—
may result in
praise,
glory,
and
honor
at
[the] revelation
of Jesus
Christ.

ἵνα
τὸ
δοκίμιον
ὑμῶν
τῆς
πίστεως
πολυτιμότερον
χρυσίου
τοῦ
ἀπολλυμένου
διὰ
πυρὸς
δὲ
δοκιμαζομένου
εὑρεθῇ
εἰς
ἔπαινον
καὶ
δόξαν
καὶ
τιμὴν
ἐν
ἀποκαλύψει
Ἰησοῦ
Χριστοῦ

[Though] you have not seen
[Him],
you love [Him];
[and though] you do not see
[Him]
now,
you believe
in [Him]
and
rejoice
with an inexpressible
and
glorious
joy,

ὃν
οὐκ
ἰδόντες
ἀγαπᾶτε
εἰς
ὃν
ἄρτι
μὴ
ὁρῶντες
πιστεύοντες
δὲ
ἀγαλλιᾶσθε
χαρᾷ
ἀνεκλαλήτῳ
καὶ
δεδοξασμένῃ

[now that] you are receiving
the
goal
of
your
faith,
[the] salvation
of [your] souls.

κομιζόμενοι
τὸ
τέλος
τῆς
πίστεως
‹ὑμῶν›
σωτηρίαν
ψυχῶν

Concerning
this
salvation,
[the] prophets
who
foretold
the
grace
that would come
to you
searched
and
investigated carefully,

Περὶ
ἧς
σωτηρίας
ἐξεζήτησαν
καὶ
ἐξηραύνησαν
προφῆται
οἱ
περὶ
τῆς
εἰς
ὑμᾶς
χάριτος
προφητεύσαντες

trying to determine
the time and setting
to which the
Spirit
of Christ
in
them
was pointing
when He predicted
the
sufferings
of
Christ
and
the
glories
to follow.

ἐραυνῶντες
εἰς
τίνα
ἢ
ποῖον
καιρὸν
ἐδήλου
τὸ
ἐν
αὐτοῖς
Πνεῦμα
Χριστοῦ
προμαρτυρόμενον
τὰ
εἰς
Χριστὸν
παθήματα
καὶ
τὰς
μετὰ
ταῦτα
δόξας
12
It was revealed
to [them]
that
they were not serving
themselves
but
you,
[when they foretold] the things
now announced
by
those who
preached the gospel
to you
by
[the] Holy
Spirit
sent
from
heaven.
[Even] angels
long
to look
into
[these things].

οἷς
ἀπεκαλύφθη
ὅτι
οὐχ
ἑαυτοῖς
ὑμῖν
δὲ
διηκόνουν
αὐτά
ἃ
νῦν
ἀνηγγέλη
ὑμῖν
διὰ
τῶν
εὐαγγελισαμένων
ὑμᾶς
ἐν
Πνεύματι
Ἁγίῳ
ἀποσταλέντι
ἀπ’
οὐρανοῦ
εἰς
ἃ
ἐπιθυμοῦσιν
ἄγγελοι
παρακύψαι
13
Therefore
prepare
your
minds {for action}.
Be sober-minded.
Set [your] hope
fully
on
the
grace
to be given
you
at
[the] revelation
of Jesus
Christ.

Διὸ
ἀναζωσάμενοι
τὰς
ὀσφύας
τῆς
διανοίας
ὑμῶν
νήφοντες
τελείως
ἐλπίσατε
ἐπὶ
τὴν
φερομένην
ὑμῖν
χάριν
ἐν
ἀποκαλύψει
Ἰησοῦ
Χριστοῦ

As
obedient
children,
do not conform
to the
passions
of
your
former
ignorance.
14
ὡς
τέκνα
ὑπακοῆς
μὴ
συσχηματιζόμενοι
ταῖς
πρότερον
ἐν
τῇ
ἀγνοίᾳ
ὑμῶν
ἐπιθυμίαις
15
But
just as
He who
called
you
[is] holy,
so
be
holy
in
all
you do,
15
ἀλλὰ
κατὰ
τὸν
καλέσαντα
ὑμᾶς
ἅγιον
καὶ
αὐτοὶ
ἅγιοι
ἐν
πάσῃ
ἀναστροφῇ
γενήθητε
16
for
it is written:
“Be
holy,
because
I
am
holy.”

διότι
γέγραπται
‹ὅτι›
Ἅγιοι
ἔσεσθε
ὅτι
ἐγὼ
ἅγιος
[εἰμι]
17
Since
you call on
[a] Father
who
judges
each one’s
work
impartially,
live your lives
in
reverent fear
during
your
temporary stay [on earth].

Καὶ
εἰ
Πατέρα
ἐπικαλεῖσθε
τὸν
ἀπροσωπολήμπτως
κρίνοντα
κατὰ
τὸ
ἑκάστου
ἔργον
ἐν
φόβῳ
τὸν
τῆς
παροικίας
ὑμῶν
χρόνον
ἀναστράφητε
18
[For] you know
that
it was not with perishable things
[such as] silver
or
gold
that you were redeemed
from
the
empty
way of life
you
inherited from your forefathers,
18
εἰδότες
ὅτι
οὐ
φθαρτοῖς
ἀργυρίῳ
ἢ
χρυσίῳ
ἐλυτρώθητε
ἐκ
τῆς
ματαίας
ὑμῶν
ἀναστροφῆς
πατροπαραδότου
19
but
with [the] precious
blood
of Christ,
a lamb
without blemish
[or]
spot.
19
ἀλλὰ
τιμίῳ
αἵματι
ὡς
ἀμνοῦ
ἀμώμου
καὶ
ἀσπίλου
Χριστοῦ
20
He was known before
[the] foundation
of [the] world,
but
was revealed
in
the
last
times
for your sake.
20
προεγνωσμένου
μὲν
πρὸ
καταβολῆς
κόσμου
φανερωθέντος
δὲ
ἐπ’
ἐσχάτου
τῶν
χρόνων
δι’
ὑμᾶς
21
Through
Him
[you]
believe
in
God,
who
raised Him
from
[the] dead
and
glorified
Him;
and so
your
faith
and
hope
are
in
God.
21
τοὺς
δι’
αὐτοῦ
πιστοὺς
εἰς
Θεὸν
τὸν
ἐγείραντα
αὐτὸν
ἐκ
νεκρῶν
καὶ
δόξαν
αὐτῷ
δόντα
ὥστε
τὴν
πίστιν
ὑμῶν
καὶ
ἐλπίδα
εἶναι
εἰς
Θεόν
22
[Since] you have purified
your
souls
by
obedience
to the
truth
so that
you have a genuine love for your brothers,
love
one another
deeply,
from
a pure
heart.

Τὰς
ψυχὰς
ὑμῶν
ἡγνικότες
ἐν
τῇ
ὑπακοῇ
τῆς
ἀληθείας
εἰς
φιλαδελφίαν
ἀνυπόκριτον
ἐκ
[καθαρᾶς]
καρδίας
ἀλλήλους
ἀγαπήσατε
ἐκτενῶς
23
For you have been born again,
not
of
perishable
seed,
but
of imperishable,
through
[the] living
and
enduring
word
of God.
23
ἀναγεγεννημένοι
οὐκ
ἐκ
σπορᾶς
φθαρτῆς
ἀλλὰ
ἀφθάρτου
διὰ
λόγου
ζῶντος
Θεοῦ
καὶ
μένοντος
24
For,
“All
flesh [is]
like
grass,
and
all
its
glory
like
[the] flowers
of the field;
the
grass
withers
and
the
flowers
fall,
24
διότι
Πᾶσα
σὰρξ
ὡς
χόρτος
καὶ
πᾶσα
δόξα
αὐτῆς
ὡς
ἄνθος
χόρτου
ἐξηράνθη
ὁ
χόρτος
καὶ
τὸ
ἄνθος
ἐξέπεσεν
25
but
the
word
of [the] Lord
stands
forever.”
And
this
is
the
word
that
was proclaimed
to
you.
