I don’t want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters, about our ancestors in the wilderness long ago. All of them were guided by a cloud that moved ahead of them, and all of them walked through the sea on dry ground.1Οὐ θέλω γὰρ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί ὅτι οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν πάντες ὑπὸ τὴν νεφέλην ἦσαν καὶ πάντες διὰ τῆς θαλάσσης διῆλθον
In the cloud and in the sea, all of them were baptized as followers of Moses.2καὶ πάντες εἰς τὸν Μωϋσῆν ἐβαπτίσαντο ἐν τῇ νεφέλῃ καὶ ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ
All of them ate the same spiritual food,3καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν βρῶμα ἔφαγον
and all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ.4καὶ πάντες τὸ αὐτὸ πνευματικὸν ἔπιον πόμα ἔπινον γὰρ ἐκ πνευματικῆς ἀκολουθούσης πέτρας πέτρα δὲ ἦν Χριστός
Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.5ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐν τοῖς πλείοσιν αὐτῶν εὐδόκησεν Θεός κατεστρώθησαν γὰρ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ
These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did,6Ταῦτα δὲ τύποι ἡμῶν ἐγενήθησαν εἰς τὸ μὴ εἶναι ἡμᾶς ἐπιθυμητὰς κακῶν καθὼς κἀκεῖνοι ἐπεθύμησαν
or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”7μηδὲ εἰδωλολάτραι γίνεσθε καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ὥσπερ γέγραπται Ἐκάθισεν λαὸς φαγεῖν καὶ πεῖν καὶ ἀνέστησαν παίζειν
And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day.8μηδὲ πορνεύωμεν καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπόρνευσαν καὶ ἔπεσαν μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ εἰκοσι τρεῖς χιλιάδες
Nor should we put Christ to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites.9μηδὲ ἐκπειράζωμεν τὸν Χριστόν* καθώς τινες αὐτῶν ἐπείρασαν καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν ὄφεων ἀπώλλυντο
And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.10μηδὲ γογγύζετε καθάπερ τινὲς αὐτῶν ἐγόγγυσαν καὶ ἀπώλοντο ὑπὸ τοῦ ὀλοθρευτοῦ
These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.11Ταῦτα δὲ τυπικῶς συνέβαινεν ἐκείνοις ἐγράφη δὲ πρὸς νουθεσίαν ἡμῶν εἰς οὓς τὰ τέλη τῶν αἰώνων κατήντηκεν
If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.12Ὥστε δοκῶν ἑστάναι βλεπέτω μὴ πέσῃ
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.13πειρασμὸς ὑμᾶς οὐκ εἴληφεν εἰ μὴ ἀνθρώπινος πιστὸς δὲ Θεός ὃς οὐκ ἐάσει ὑμᾶς πειρασθῆναι ὑπὲρ δύνασθε ἀλλὰ ποιήσει σὺν τῷ πειρασμῷ καὶ τὴν ἔκβασιν τοῦ δύνασθαι ὑπενεγκεῖν
So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols.14Διόπερ ἀγαπητοί μου φεύγετε ἀπὸ τῆς εἰδωλολατρίας
You are reasonable people. Decide for yourselves if what I am saying is true.15ὡς φρονίμοις λέγω κρίνατε ὑμεῖς φημι
When we bless the cup at the Lord’s Table, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? And when we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ?16Τὸ ποτήριον τῆς εὐλογίας εὐλογοῦμεν οὐχὶ κοινωνία ἐστὶν τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ τὸν ἄρτον ὃν κλῶμεν οὐχὶ κοινωνία τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστιν
And though we are many, we all eat from one loaf of bread, showing that we are one body.17ὅτι εἷς ἄρτος ἓν σῶμα οἱ πολλοί ἐσμεν οἱ γὰρ πάντες ἐκ τοῦ ἑνὸς ἄρτου μετέχομεν
Think about the people of Israel. Weren’t they united by eating the sacrifices at the altar?18βλέπετε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ κατὰ σάρκα οὐχ οἱ ἐσθίοντες τὰς θυσίας κοινωνοὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου εἰσίν
What am I trying to say? Am I saying that food offered to idols has some significance, or that idols are real gods?19Τί οὖν φημι ὅτι εἰδωλόθυτόν τί ἐστιν ὅτι εἴδωλόν τί ἐστιν
No, not at all. I am saying that these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to God. And I don’t want you to participate with demons.20ἀλλ’ ὅτι θύουσιν (τὰ ἔθνη) δαιμονίοις καὶ οὐ Θεῷ θύουσιν οὐ θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς κοινωνοὺς τῶν δαιμονίων γίνεσθαι
You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too.21οὐ δύνασθε ποτήριον Κυρίου πίνειν καὶ ποτήριον δαιμονίων οὐ δύνασθε τραπέζης Κυρίου μετέχειν καὶ τραπέζης δαιμονίων
What? Do we dare to rouse the Lord’s jealousy? Do you think we are stronger than he is?22 παραζηλοῦμεν τὸν Κύριον μὴ ἰσχυρότεροι αὐτοῦ ἐσμεν
You say, “I am allowed to do anything” —but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial.23Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα συμφέρει Πάντα ἔξεστιν ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντα οἰκοδομεῖ
Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.24μηδεὶς τὸ ἑαυτοῦ ζητείτω ἀλλὰ τὸ τοῦ ἑτέρου
So you may eat any meat that is sold in the marketplace without raising questions of conscience.25Πᾶν τὸ ἐν μακέλλῳ πωλούμενον ἐσθίετε μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν
For “the earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it.”26Τοῦ Κυρίου γὰρ γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς
If someone who isn’t a believer asks you home for dinner, accept the invitation if you want to. Eat whatever is offered to you without raising questions of conscience.27Εἴ τις καλεῖ ὑμᾶς τῶν ἀπίστων καὶ θέλετε πορεύεσθαι πᾶν τὸ παρατιθέμενον ὑμῖν ἐσθίετε μηδὲν ἀνακρίνοντες διὰ τὴν συνείδησιν
(But suppose someone tells you, “This meat was offered to an idol.” Don’t eat it, out of consideration for the conscience of the one who told you.28ἐὰν δέ τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ Τοῦτο ἱερόθυτόν ἐστιν μὴ ἐσθίετε δι’ ἐκεῖνον τὸν μηνύσαντα καὶ τὴν συνείδησιν ⧼Tοῦ γὰρ κυρίου γῆ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς⧽
It might not be a matter of conscience for you, but it is for the other person.) For why should my freedom be limited by what someone else thinks?29συνείδησιν δὲ λέγω οὐχὶ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἀλλὰ τὴν τοῦ ἑτέρου ἵνα‿ τί γὰρ ἐλευθερία μου κρίνεται ὑπὸ ἄλλης συνειδήσεως
If I can thank God for the food and enjoy it, why should I be condemned for eating it?30εἰ ἐγὼ χάριτι μετέχω τί βλασφημοῦμαι ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εὐχαριστῶ
So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.31Εἴτε οὖν ἐσθίετε εἴτε πίνετε εἴτε τι ποιεῖτε πάντα εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ ποιεῖτε
Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentiles or the church of God.32ἀπρόσκοποι καὶ Ἰουδαίοις γίνεσθε καὶ Ἕλλησιν καὶ τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ
I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.33καθὼς κἀγὼ πάντα πᾶσιν ἀρέσκω μὴ ζητῶν τὸ ἐμαυτοῦ σύμφορον ἀλλὰ τὸ τῶν πολλῶν ἵνα σωθῶσιν
