John 11
Berean Study Bible

The Death of Lazarus

At this time

Jesus was nearing the final weeks of His ministry, with growing opposition in Jerusalem and His coming death drawing near.

Gal 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,…
Rom 5:6 For at just the right time, while we were still powerless…

a man named Lazarus

Lazarus, whose name means “God has helped,” was a close friend of Jesus and the brother of Mary and Martha.

Jhn 12:1-2 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany,…
Luk 16:20-21 And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate…

was sick.

His illness would become the occasion for Jesus to reveal His authority over death.

Jas 5:14-15 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders…
Mrk 1:30-31 Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever,…

He lived in Bethany,

Bethany lay about two miles east of Jerusalem on the Mount of Olives, placing this event near the center of the mounting conflict surrounding Jesus.

Mat 21:17 Then He left them and went out of the city to Bethany…
Mrk 11:1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage…

the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

The sisters were devoted to Jesus and welcomed Him into their home, making Lazarus’s illness deeply personal to those who loved Him.

Luk 10:38-42 As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village…
Jhn 12:2-3 So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there.…

(Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick,

Mary of Bethany was Lazarus’s sister and lived with him and Martha near Jerusalem. Their family was known to Jesus, and Lazarus’s illness would soon lead to his resurrection, displaying Jesus’ authority over death.

Jhn 12:1-2 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany,…
Luk 10:39-42 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet…

was to anoint the Lord with perfume

John identifies Mary by the act she would later perform shortly before Jesus’ crucifixion. Her costly anointing honored Him and pointed toward His coming burial.

Mrk 14:3-9 While Jesus was in Bethany reclining at the table…
Mat 26:6-13 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper,…
Luk 7:36-37 Then one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him…

and wipe His feet with her hair.)

By wiping His feet with her hair, Mary showed humble, personal devotion to Jesus. Her action set her apart as one who understood the significance of His approaching death.

Luk 7:38 As she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began…
Jhn 12:3 Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume…

So the sisters sent word to Jesus,

Mary and Martha lived with their brother Lazarus in Bethany, a village near Jerusalem where Jesus was welcomed as a friend. With Lazarus seriously ill, they sent a messenger to find Him, trusting His concern for their family and His power to help.

Luk 7:3 When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent…
Jhn 4:47 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee…
Mrk 5:23 My little daughter is near death. Please come…

“Lord, the one You love is sick.”

Their message was brief but confident. They addressed Jesus with reverence and appealed to His love for Lazarus without telling Him what He must do. Lazarus’s illness would lead to a public display of Jesus’ authority over death and reveal more fully that He is the resurrection and the life.

Jhn 20:2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple…
Jhn 13:23 One of His disciples, the one whom Jesus loved,…
Jhn 19:26 When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved…

When Jesus heard this, He said,

Jesus responded to the report of Lazarus’s illness with full knowledge of what would follow. His delay and eventual return to Bethany were purposeful, preparing the disciples and Lazarus’s family to witness God’s power.

Mrk 5:36 But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus,…
Luk 8:50 But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus,…
Jhn 4:50 “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.”…

“This sickness will not end in death.

Lazarus would die and be buried, but death would not have the final outcome. Jesus would raise him, demonstrating that He holds authority over life and death.

2Ki 20:5 Go back and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people…
Jas 5:15 And the prayer offered in faith will restore…
Psa 118:17 I will not die, but I will live and proclaim…

No, it is for the glory of God,

Lazarus’s illness would become the setting for God’s power to be openly displayed. The event would reveal that God was at work through Jesus in a manner no ordinary healer could accomplish.

Jhn 9:3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,…
Exo 14:4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue…
Exo 9:16 But I have raised you up for this very purpose…

so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Lazarus’s resurrection would make Jesus’ identity and authority clearer to those present. It would also intensify the opposition that led toward Jesus’ own death and resurrection, through which His victory over death would be fully revealed.

Jhn 2:11 Jesus performed this, the first of His signs, at Cana…
Jhn 13:31-32 When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified,…
Jhn 17:1 When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes…

Now Jesus loved Martha

Jesus regarded Martha with genuine affection. Her active care for guests and concern for practical needs marked her character, even when she needed correction about anxiety and misplaced priorities.

Luk 10:38-39 As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village…
Jhn 12:2 So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there.…

and her sister

Mary shared that same love. Her devotion to Jesus and her attentive faith set her apart, and Jesus received her worship and defended her sincere service.

Luk 10:40-42 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations…
Jhn 12:3-8 Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume…

and Lazarus.

Lazarus was also deeply loved by Jesus. His coming death and resurrection would reveal the glory of God, display Christ’s authority over death, and strengthen the faith of those who witnessed it.

Jhn 12:1-2 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany,…
Jhn 12:9-11 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus was there…
Jhn 12:17-18 Meanwhile, many people who had been with Jesus…

So on hearing that Lazarus was sick,

Jesus received word that His beloved friend was seriously ill. Lazarus’s sickness would lead to a public display of Jesus’ authority over death and confirm that He is the Son of God. It also reveals the personal affection Jesus had for Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha.

Jhn 4:46-53 So once again He came to Cana in Galilee,…
Luk 7:1-10 When Jesus had concluded His discourse in the hearing…
Mat 8:5-13 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came…

He stayed where He was for two days,

Jesus delayed intentionally, not from indifference but according to the Father’s purpose. By the time He arrived, Lazarus had been dead four days, leaving no doubt that death was complete and that his restoration could only be the work of God.

2Pe 3:8-9 Beloved, do not let this one thing escape your notice:…
Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…
Isa 30:18 Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you;…

and then He said to the disciples,

Jesus informed His disciples of His decision after Lazarus’s illness had been reported. He continued to lead them directly, preparing them to witness what would reveal God’s glory and strengthen their faith.

Mat 16:21 From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples…
Luk 18:31 Then Jesus took the Twelve aside and said to them…
Mrk 8:31 Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man…

“Let us go back to Judea.”

Judea was dangerous because religious leaders there had recently sought to stone Jesus. Yet He deliberately returned, knowing Lazarus had died and that His coming would lead to a public miracle. The journey also moved Him nearer to the opposition and suffering that would culminate in His crucifixion.

Jhn 7:3 So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea,…
Mat 19:1 When Jesus had finished saying these things…
Mrk 10:1 Then Jesus left that place and went into Judea…

“Rabbi,” they replied,

The disciples addressed Jesus as Rabbi, a respectful title meaning “teacher” or “master,” recognizing Him as their teacher and leader. Yet their response also reveals that they did not fully grasp the necessity of His return to Judea.

Jhn 1:38 Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?”…
Jhn 4:31 Meanwhile the disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
Jhn 3:2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,…

“the Jews just tried to stone You,

The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem had recently sought to kill Jesus because they rejected His claims concerning His unity with the Father. Their opposition had become openly violent, making a return to the area dangerous.

Jhn 8:59 At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him.…
Jhn 10:31 At this, the Jews again picked up stones to stone Him.
Jhn 10:33 “We are not stoning You for any good work,” said the Jews…

and You are going back there?”

The disciples feared for Jesus’ life and for their own safety. They saw only the threat awaiting Him, while Jesus was preparing to go to Lazarus and to continue the work His Father had given Him, despite the growing danger.

Jhn 7:1 After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee.…
Luk 13:33 Nevertheless, I must keep going today…
Luk 9:51 As the day of His ascension approached,…

Jesus answered,

Jesus replied to the disciples’ fear of returning to Judea, where His opponents had recently sought to stone Him.

Mat 22:29 Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know…
Jhn 3:3 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,…
Jhn 5:19 So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son……

“Are there not twelve hours of daylight?

The daylight hours represented the appointed time for work and travel. Jesus’ ministry would continue until the time set by the Father was complete.

Jhn 9:4 While it is daytime, we must do the works…
Psa 74:16 The day is Yours, and also the night; You established…
Psa 104:23 Man goes forth to his work and to his labor until evening.

If anyone walks in the daytime,

A person traveling in daylight can see the path ahead and move safely.

Jhn 8:12 Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said,…
Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light…
1Th 5:5 For you are all sons of the light and sons of the day;…

he will not stumble,

With sufficient light, obstacles are visible and avoidable.

Pro 3:23 Then you will go on your way in safety,…
Psa 91:12 They will lift you up in their hands…
Psa 119:165 Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your law;…

because he sees by the light of this world.

Jesus used ordinary daylight, the natural light provided by the sun and a picture of Himself as the Light of the World, to assure His disciples that He would fulfill His work according to God’s purpose, not be taken before His appointed hour.

Jhn 12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one…
Jhn 1:9 The true Light, who gives light to everyone,…
Psa 36:9 For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light…

But if anyone walks at night,

Jesus drew on the familiar danger of traveling after sunset, when unlit paths concealed stones, ditches, and other hazards. He spoke while preparing to return to Judea, where opposition against Him had grown.

Jhn 12:35 Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer…
1Th 5:5 For you are all sons of the light and sons of the day;…
Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light…

he will stumble,

Without light, a traveler cannot see where to place his feet. Jesus contrasted such uncertainty with His own obedience to the Father’s timing; no danger could prevent His work before the appointed hour.

Pro 4:19 But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom;…
Isa 59:10 Like the blind, we feel our way along the wall…
1Jn 2:11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness.…

because he has no light.”

Darkness leaves a person unable to discern the path ahead. The disciples did not yet understand why Jesus was going to Lazarus, but He knew that Lazarus’s death and resurrection would reveal the glory of God.

Isa 50:10 Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice…
Lam 3:2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness…
Job 12:25 They grope in the darkness without light;…

After He had said this,

Jesus had explained that Lazarus’s illness would display God’s glory and had urged the disciples to return with Him to Judea despite the danger there.

Jhn 17:1 When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes…
Jhn 12:36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light,…

He told them,

He prepared the disciples for what they would soon witness and for the opposition that would intensify because of it.

Mrk 4:11 He replied, “The mystery of the kingdom of God…
Luk 8:10 He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom…

“Our friend Lazarus

Lazarus lived in Bethany with his sisters, Martha and Mary, and was deeply loved by Jesus.

Jhn 15:14-15 You are My friends if you do what I command you.…
Pro 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother…
Luk 16:20-25 And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate…

has fallen asleep,

Jesus used sleep to speak of Lazarus’s death, indicating that death would not have the final word in this situation.

1Th 4:13-14 Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed…
1Co 15:18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ…

but I am going there

Bethany lay near Jerusalem, where leaders had recently sought to stone Jesus. He nevertheless returned willingly.

Luk 7:11-15 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain.…
Luk 8:49-56 While He was still speaking, someone arrived…

to wake him up.”

Jesus intended to raise Lazarus bodily from the dead, revealing His authority over death and setting in motion the events that led toward His own crucifixion.

Dan 12:2 And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake…
1Co 15:52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye…

His disciples replied,

They still did not understand that Jesus was speaking of Lazarus’s death. As His followers, they often responded according to what they could see and reason naturally, while Jesus was directing their attention to God’s purpose.

Jhn 4:33 So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone…
Mrk 9:32 But they did not understand this statement,…
Luk 18:34 But the disciples did not understand any of these things…

“Lord, if he is sleeping,

They understood Jesus to mean ordinary sleep. Since Lazarus had been ill, they assumed rest would help him recover and saw no urgent reason for Jesus to return to Judea.

Mrk 5:39 He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion…”…
1Th 4:13 Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed…
Psa 4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone…

he will get better.”

Their response revealed that they did not yet grasp Lazarus’s condition or Jesus’ intention to raise him. Jesus would soon make clear that Lazarus had died and that He had power over death.

Jhn 4:50-53 “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.”…
Jas 5:15 And the prayer offered in faith will restore…
Mrk 1:31 So He went to her, took her by the hand…

They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep,

The disciples understood Jesus’ words naturally and assumed Lazarus was resting and might recover. They did not yet realize that Jesus was using sleep to describe death and that Lazarus’s condition was beyond human help.

Mat 9:24-25 Go away,” He told them. “The girl is not dead, but asleep.…
Mrk 5:39-40 He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion…”…
Luk 8:52-53 Meanwhile, everyone was weeping and mourning for her.…

but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus.

Jesus knew Lazarus had died and was preparing the disciples for what He would do in Bethany. Lazarus’s death would reveal Christ’s authority over death and lead to a fuller understanding of who He is.

1Th 4:13-14 Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed…
1Co 15:18-20 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ…
Dan 12:2 And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake…

So Jesus told them plainly,

Jesus removed the figure of sleep and spoke directly so the disciples would understand Lazarus’s condition and the significance of what would follow.

Mrk 8:32 He spoke this message quite frankly, and Peter took Him aside…
Jhn 16:25 I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech.…
Jhn 18:20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered.…

“Lazarus is dead,

Lazarus had truly died, yet his death would become the setting for Jesus to reveal His authority over life and death. His return to life would strengthen the faith of some witnesses while intensifying the hostility of those determined to oppose Jesus.

Mrk 5:35 While He was still speaking, messengers arrived…
Luk 8:49 While He was still speaking, someone arrived…
Mat 9:18 While Jesus was saying these things, a synagogue leader came…

and for your sake

Jesus would use Lazarus’s death to strengthen the disciples’ faith through a clearer display of His authority.

2Ti 2:10 For this reason I endure all things for the elect…
2Co 1:6 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation;…
2Co 4:15 All this is for your benefit, so that…

I am glad I was not there,

Had He arrived before Lazarus died, He might have healed him as He had healed others. Lazarus’s death would instead reveal Jesus’ power over the grave.

Jhn 16:7 But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit…
Jhn 14:28 You heard Me say, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back…
Jhn 16:22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again…

so that you may believe.

The raising of Lazarus would confirm Jesus’ identity and prepare the disciples for His own death and resurrection.

Jhn 14:29 And now I have told you before it happens,…
Jhn 13:19 I am telling you now before it happens…
Jhn 20:31 But these are written so that you may believe…

But let us go to him.”

Jesus deliberately returned toward Bethany, near Jerusalem, despite the growing danger from those seeking to kill Him.

2Sa 12:23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast?…
Luk 23:43 And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you,…
Php 1:23 I am torn between the two. I desire to depart…

Then Thomas called Didymus

Thomas was one of the Twelve and was known by both a Semitic name and its Greek equivalent, Didymus, meaning “twin.” He appears as a devoted but often troubled disciple, willing to follow Jesus even when he did not fully understand what lay ahead.

Jhn 20:24 Now Thomas called Didymus, one of the Twelve…
Jhn 21:2 Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael…

said to his fellow disciples,

The disciples had traveled with Jesus through growing opposition and understood that returning to Judea could bring danger from those seeking His life.

Jhn 16:17 Then some of His disciples asked one another…
Jhn 4:33 So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone…

“Let us also go,

Jesus had resolved to go to Lazarus despite the threat in Judea. Thomas urged the others not to abandon Him.

Mat 16:24 Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come…
Mrk 8:34 Then Jesus called the crowd to Him along with His disciples,…
Luk 9:23 Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come…

so that we may die with Him.”

Thomas expected the journey to end in death, yet his words reveal real loyalty to Jesus. His somber courage stands against the fear and uncertainty shared by the disciples as Jesus went forward to reveal His authority over death.

2Ti 2:11-12 This is a trustworthy saying: If we died with Him…
Rom 6:8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe…
Php 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary

When Jesus arrived,

Jesus came to Bethany after remaining two days where He was when news of Lazarus’s illness first reached Him. His delay served God’s purpose, preparing for a work that would reveal His glory.

Mrk 5:38-40 When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader…
Luk 7:11-15 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain.…
Mat 9:23-24 When Jesus entered the house of the synagogue leader…

He found that Lazarus

Lazarus, whose name means “God has helped,” was the brother of Martha and Mary and a beloved friend of Jesus. The family’s loss gives the event a deeply personal setting.

Luk 7:12-15 As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man…
Act 9:37-40 At that time, however, she became sick and died,…
2Ki 4:32-35 When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy…

had already spent four days

Lazarus had been dead long enough to remove any possibility of natural recovery. Burial normally occurred soon after death, and by the fourth day decay made death’s finality unmistakable.

Act 10:30 Cornelius answered: “Four days ago I was in my house praying…
Mat 12:40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights……
Luk 24:21 But we were hoping He was the One who would redeem Israel.…

in the tomb.

Lazarus had been placed in a rock-cut burial chamber, likely sealed with a stone, according to Jewish burial custom. The tomb represented the finality of death, yet Jesus was about to show His authority over it.

Mat 27:60 and placed it in his own new tomb…
Luk 23:53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth,…
Act 13:29 When they had carried out all that was written about Him,…

Now Bethany

Bethany, meaning “house of affliction” or “house of figs,” was a village on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, home to Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Jesus often stayed there during His visits to Jerusalem, where He found hospitality among devoted friends.

Jhn 12:1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany,…
Mat 21:17 Then He left them and went out of the city to Bethany…

was near Jerusalem,

Its location near the city placed it close to the center of Jewish religious life and to the growing opposition Jesus faced from the authorities.

Mrk 11:1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage…
Luk 19:29 As He approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives…

a little less than two miles away,

The short distance made travel between Bethany and Jerusalem easy and allowed news of Lazarus’s illness and death to reach Jesus quickly.

Luk 24:50 When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany,…
Mrk 11:11 Then Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts…
Act 1:12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives…

and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary

Many from Jerusalem came to Bethany to mourn with Lazarus’s sisters, showing that the family was known within the community. Their presence would also provide numerous witnesses to what Jesus was about to do.

Mat 9:23-25 When Jesus entered the house of the synagogue leader…
Mrk 5:38-40 When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader…
Luk 7:12-15 As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man…

to console them

Jewish mourning involved family, friends, and neighbors gathering with the bereaved, sharing their grief and offering practical and emotional support.

Job 2:11-13 Now when Job’s three friends came from their homes…
Jer 16:7 No food will be offered to comfort those who mourn the dead;…
2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…

in the loss of their brother.

Lazarus’s death had brought deep sorrow to Martha and Mary. Yet his death would become the occasion for Jesus to reveal His authority over death and to bring glory to God.

Gen 44:20-22 We have an elderly father and a younger brother.…
Gen 42:36-38 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…
2Sa 1:25-27 How the mighty have fallen in the thick of battle!…

So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming,

Martha responded at once, showing both her grief over Lazarus and her confidence that Jesus’ presence mattered. The family’s close friendship with Jesus made His arrival especially significant in this moment of mourning.

Jhn 12:1-2 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany,…
Luk 10:38 As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village…

she went out to meet Him,

Leaving the house to meet Jesus was an act of respect and personal appeal. Martha sought Him before He reached the home where mourners had gathered, bringing her sorrow and faith directly to Him.

Mat 25:6 At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom!…
1Sa 25:23-24 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the donkey,…

but Mary stayed at home.

Mary remained with those gathered to mourn, following the customary pattern of receiving comforters in the house. Her grief would later lead her to Jesus as well, but her response unfolded differently from Martha’s.

Luk 10:39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet…
Luk 10:42 But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen…

Martha said to Jesus, “Lord,

Martha addressed Jesus with reverence and recognized His authority even in her grief.

Luk 10:40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations…
Jhn 13:13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, because I am.
Jhn 20:28 Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!”

if You had been here,

She believed Jesus could have healed Lazarus before his death and expressed the sorrow of one who knew His power but did not yet grasp the purpose of the delay.

Jhn 4:47 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee…
Mrk 5:23 My little daughter is near death. Please come…
Mat 9:18 While Jesus was saying these things, a synagogue leader came…

my brother would not have died.

Martha’s words show genuine faith in Jesus as healer, while Lazarus’s death would reveal Jesus’ authority over death itself.

Jhn 4:50-53 “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.”…
Luk 7:13-15 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her…
Mrk 5:41-42 Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!”…

But even now

Lazarus had been in the tomb four days, yet Martha had not abandoned hope in Jesus.

Job 13:15 Though He slay me, I will hope in Him…
Psa 27:13-14 Still I am certain to see the goodness of the LORD…
Lam 3:21-24 Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope:…

I know

Her words express settled confidence born of knowing His works and character.

2Ti 1:12 For I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced…
Job 19:25-27 But I know that my Redeemer lives…
Jhn 6:69 We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”

that God will give You

She recognized Jesus’ unique relationship with the Father and His authority to act according to God’s will.

Jhn 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you. And I appointed you…
Jhn 14:13-14 And I will do whatever you ask in My name…
1Jn 5:14-15 And this is the confidence that we have before Him:…

whatever You ask of Him.”

Martha believed that no circumstance, including death, lay beyond the reach of God’s power through His Son.

Jhn 16:23-24 In that day you will no longer ask Me anything.…
Mrk 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer,…
Mat 7:7-11 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;…

“Your brother will rise again,”

Jesus assured Martha that Lazarus’s death would not be final. Martha understood the future resurrection promised for God’s people, but Jesus also pointed to the immediate work He was about to do. Lazarus would soon be raised, displaying Jesus’ authority over death and preparing for His fuller declaration that He is the resurrection and the life.

Jhn 5:28-29 Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming…
Isa 26:19 Your dead will live; their bodies will rise.…
Dan 12:2 And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake…

Jesus told her.

Jesus addressed Martha personally in her grief, meeting her with both compassion and truth. Though Lazarus had been dead four days, Jesus was not limited by the finality people associated with death. His words directed Martha beyond sorrow and toward faith in Him.

Mrk 5:41-42 Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!”…
Luk 7:14-15 Then He went up and touched the coffin…
Luk 8:54-55 But Jesus took her by the hand and called out,…

Martha replied,

Martha, Lazarus’s sister, answered Jesus with confidence shaped by her faith in God’s promises. Though grieving her brother’s death, she understood that death would not have the final word.

Luk 10:38-42 As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village…
Jhn 12:1-2 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany,…

“I know

Her answer expresses settled conviction rather than uncertainty. She trusted what God had revealed concerning the future of His people.

Job 19:25-27 But I know that my Redeemer lives…
Psa 56:9 Then my enemies will retreat on the day I cry for help.…
2Ti 1:12 For I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced…

that he will rise again

Martha believed Lazarus would be raised from the dead. Her hope extended beyond immediate comfort to God’s future act of restoring the dead.

1Th 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven…
Dan 12:2 And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake…
Act 24:15 I have the same hope in God that they themselves cherish,…

in the resurrection

Many Jews, including the Pharisees, held to a bodily resurrection, though the Sadducees denied it. Martha shared the expectation that the faithful would live again by God’s power.

Jhn 5:28-29 Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming…
Luk 14:14 and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay…
1Co 15:42-44 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead:…

Jesus

Standing before Lazarus’s tomb, Jesus, whose name means “The Lord is salvation,” reveals both His full humanity and His divine authority. He loved Lazarus, Martha, and Mary, yet He also knew He would soon raise Lazarus from the dead. His presence in Bethany, near Jerusalem, occurs shortly before the events leading to His crucifixion.

wept.

Jesus openly shared the grief of Mary, Martha, and those mourning Lazarus. His tears show genuine sorrow over death and its effects in a fallen world, while His next act—calling Lazarus from the tomb—demonstrates His power over death.

Heb 5:7 During the days of Jesus’ earthly life, He offered up…
Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows…

Then the Jews said,

Jhn 8:52 Now we know that You have a demon!” declared the Jews…
Jhn 8:57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old,…

“See how He loved him!”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

Jesus, once again deeply moved,

Jesus approached Lazarus’s tomb with grief and righteous anger at the suffering and death brought by sin. His response reveals both His genuine love for Lazarus and his sisters and His resolve to confront death itself.

Mrk 14:33 He took with Him Peter, James, and John,…
Mat 26:37 He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee…

came to the tomb.

Lazarus had been dead four days, and the mourners regarded the burial as final. Jesus deliberately came to the place of death before revealing His authority over it.

Mrk 16:2 Very early on the first day of the week,…
Luk 24:1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning…

It was a cave

Rock-cut tombs were common in Judea, especially among families able to provide a permanent burial place. The cave held Lazarus’s body apart from the living and marked the reality of his death.

Mat 27:60 and placed it in his own new tomb…
Luk 24:2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,

“Take away the stone,” Jesus said.

The tomb was likely a cave sealed with a heavy stone, and opening it would expose Lazarus’s body and the evidence of death. Jesus directs those present to act before He displays His authority over the grave, calling for obedience in a situation that appeared beyond hope.

Luk 24:2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
Jhn 20:1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark…

“Lord, by now he stinks,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man.

Martha speaks honestly about the condition of her brother’s body. Though she honors Jesus as Lord, the reality of Lazarus’s death makes the command difficult to understand.

Isa 34:3 Their slain will be left unburied, and the stench…
Act 13:36-37 For when David had served God’s purpose…
Psa 16:10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol…

“It has already been four days.”

Lazarus had been dead long enough for decay to be unmistakable. No one could regard what followed as a recovery from illness or a natural event; Jesus would raise a man whose death was certain.

Act 2:27 You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will…

Jesus replied,

As Martha hesitated before the tomb was opened, Jesus reminded her of what He had already taught her about Lazarus and the power of God.

Mat 15:28 “O woman,” Jesus answered, “your faith is great!”…
Mrk 10:51 “What do you want Me to do for you?” Jesus asked.…

“Did I not tell you

He had directed Martha beyond her immediate grief and concern over her brother’s death to the promise that Lazarus would rise.

Jhn 13:19 I am telling you now before it happens…

Lazarus’s resurrection would reveal God’s power over death and confirm Jesus’ authority as the One who gives life.

So they took away the stone.

Lazarus had been laid in a tomb sealed by a large stone, as was customary in Jewish burials. Though Martha had warned of the odor after four days, those present obeyed Jesus’ command and opened the tomb. Their obedience prepared the way for the public display of Christ’s authority over death.

Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward

Though often divided in belief and practice, these groups united in the Sanhedrin, Israel’s highest religious court, when Jesus’ ministry threatened their authority.

The leaders recognized that Jesus could no longer be ignored. His public ministry had drawn widespread attention, and they feared losing their influence over the people and their standing with Rome.

Act 4:16 “What shall we do with these men?” they asked.…
Act 2:37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart…

This man is performing many signs.

They did not deny Jesus’ miracles. His works openly displayed divine power, yet the leaders responded with alarm rather than faith. Their concern over His growing influence moved them toward a deliberate plan to put Him to death.

If we let Him go on like this,

The religious leaders feared that if Jesus continued performing miracles and teaching with authority, the people would increasingly follow Him, threatening their influence and exposing the weakness of their leadership.

They recognized that Jesus’ works gave the people reason to regard Him as the promised Messiah. They feared that, if everyone believed in Him, the growing public response to Jesus would threaten both their religious position and political stability.

and then the Romans will come

They also feared the loss of the Jewish people’s remaining national identity and limited autonomy. Their fears were later realized when Rome destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple in AD 70.

But one of them, named Caiaphas,

Caiaphas was high priest from AD 18 to 36 and belonged to the powerful priestly leadership that worked closely with Rome. As son-in-law of Annas, a former high priest who retained great influence, he stood at the center of Jerusalem’s religious and political affairs.

who was high priest that year,

Rome often controlled the high priesthood by appointing and removing its holders. Caiaphas held office during the decisive period of Jesus’ public ministry, arrest, trial, and crucifixion.

Jhn 18:13 They brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law…
Jhn 18:24 Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas…
Luk 3:2 During the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,…

said to them,

Speaking before the Sanhedrin, Caiaphas pressed the council to act against Jesus. The leaders feared that Jesus’ growing following could bring Roman intervention and threaten their authority.

Mat 26:62-65 So the high priest stood up and asked Him,…
Mrk 14:60-64 So the high priest stood up before them and questioned Jesus…
Jhn 18:19-21 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus…

“You know nothing at all!

Caiaphas dismisses their hesitation and assumes control of the discussion. His harsh judgment prepared the way for his proposal that Jesus should die to preserve the nation, a plan that God would use to accomplish salvation.

You do not realize

Caiaphas rebuked the Sanhedrin for failing to see what he considered the political danger posed by Jesus’ growing influence.

Act 13:27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers…

that it is better for you

Concerned that Rome might view Jesus’ following as a threat and suppress the nation, the leaders placed national survival and their own authority above justice.

Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up…
2Co 5:15 And He died for all, that those who live…

that one man die for the people

Caiaphas urged Jesus’ death as the expedient solution. Though he intended political protection, his words foretold Christ’s sacrificial death on behalf of His people.

Mrk 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,…

than that the whole nation perish.”

Caiaphas feared Roman retaliation and the loss of Israel’s place under Roman rule. Yet the council’s decision to reject Jesus advanced God’s purpose, as His death would bring salvation rather than the national security Caiaphas sought.

Jhn 18:14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews…
Luk 19:44 They will level you to the ground—you and the children…
Mat 23:37-38 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets…

Caiaphas did not say this on his own.

Though Caiaphas intended to justify Jesus’ death as a political necessity, God directed his words to reveal a greater purpose. The high priest spoke more truly than he understood.

Jhn 12:49 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Num 23:12 But Balaam replied, “Should I not speak…”…
2Pe 1:21 For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will…

Instead, as high priest that year,

Caiaphas held the highest religious office in Israel during a period when the priesthood was closely tied to Roman authority. God used the office itself to declare what would soon take place.

Heb 9:7 But only the high priest entered the second room,…
Lev 16:34 This is to be a permanent statute for you,…

he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation,

Jesus’ death would accomplish far more than preserving the nation from Roman retaliation. He would give Himself as the sacrifice for sin, providing salvation first revealed through Israel and extending to people from every nation.

Isa 53:8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away,…
Mrk 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,…
1Ti 2:6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all—the testimony…

and not only for the nation,

Caiaphas spoke of Israel, the Jewish people over whom he served as high priest. Though he intended to justify Jesus’ death as a means of preventing Roman retaliation, God used his words to reveal that Jesus’ death would accomplish more than the preservation of the nation.

Jhn 18:14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews…
Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power…
Rom 15:8-9 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant…

but also for the scattered children of God,

Jesus would die for all who belong to God, including Jews living beyond the land of Israel and Gentiles who would believe in Him. God’s saving purpose was never limited to one nation, though Israel held a central place in His covenant plan.

Jas 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,…
1Pe 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the elect…
Jhn 1:12-13 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed…

to gather them together into one.

Through His death, Jesus would bring believing Jews and Gentiles into one people of God. This unity is fulfilled in the church and will be completed when all God’s people are gathered to Christ.

So from that day on

After Lazarus was raised in Bethany, many witnesses believed in Jesus, while others reported the event to the Pharisees. The chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin, fearing that His growing influence would provoke Roman intervention and threaten their authority.

Jhn 5:18 Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him.…
Jhn 7:1 After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee.…
Mrk 11:18 When the chief priests and scribes heard this,…

they plotted

The council’s response was deliberate and united. Caiaphas, the high priest, argued that Jesus should die for the nation, and the leaders moved from opposition and investigation to an organized plan.

Mrk 3:6 At this, the Pharisees went out and began plotting…
Mat 12:14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted…
Luk 6:11 But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with rage…

to kill Him.

Jesus’ death was now the settled purpose of the religious authorities. Their decision set in motion the events that would lead to His arrest, trial, crucifixion, and the fulfillment of God’s redemptive purpose.

Mat 26:4 and they conspired to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.
Mrk 14:1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread…
Luk 22:2 and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a way…

As a result, Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews,

Growing opposition from the Jerusalem authorities made open ministry in Judea increasingly dangerous. After Lazarus was raised, the Sanhedrin determined that Jesus must be stopped, yet His arrest would occur only at the appointed time.

Jhn 7:1 After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee.…
Mat 12:15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place.…
Jhn 8:59 At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him.…

but He withdrew to a town called Ephraim

Ephraim lay near the wilderness north of Jerusalem, away from the immediate reach of the temple leaders. Jesus’ withdrawal was deliberate, allowing Him to remain with His followers before returning to Jerusalem for the Passover.

Mat 14:13 When Jesus heard about John, He withdrew by boat…
Mrk 6:31 And He said to them, “Come with Me privately…
Luk 9:10 Then the apostles returned and reported to Jesus.…

in an area near the wilderness.

The secluded region provided distance from the crowds and hostility of the city. It also marked a period of preparation as the events leading to His crucifixion drew near.

Mat 4:1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.…
Mrk 1:12 At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness,
Luk 4:1 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan…

And He stayed there with the disciples.

Jesus remained in close fellowship with the disciples, continuing to prepare them for His death, resurrection, and the work they would carry forward.

Jhn 6:3 Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down…
Luk 9:18 One day, while Jesus was praying in private, the disciples…
Mrk 6:32 So they went away in a boat by themselves…

Now the Jewish Passover was near,

Passover commemorated Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt and God’s judgment passing over the homes marked by the blood of the lamb. Its approach also brings the Gospel account toward the death of Jesus, who would be crucified at Passover as the true sacrificial Lamb.

Jhn 6:4 Now the Jewish Feast of the Passover was near.
Mrk 14:1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread…
Luk 22:1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover…

and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem

Pilgrims came from throughout Judea and surrounding regions because Jerusalem, with its Temple, was the appointed center for Passover worship and sacrifice. The journey was an ascent both geographically and religiously, as worshipers gathered before the Lord.

Luk 2:41-42 Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast…
Deu 16:16 Three times a year all your men appear before the LORD…
Psa 122:4 where the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD…

to purify themselves before the Passover.

Those who had become ceremonially unclean prepared themselves according to the requirements of the Law before taking part in the feast. Their cleansing reflected the holiness required for worship and anticipated the complete cleansing from sin accomplished through Christ.

Ezr 6:19-21 On the fourteenth day of the first month,…
2Ch 30:17-18 Since there were many in the assembly,…
2Ch 35:6-7 Slaughter the Passover lambs, consecrate yourselves,…

They kept looking for Jesus

As Passover approached, pilgrims in Jerusalem watched for His arrival. His public ministry had made Him widely known, yet the hostility of the religious leaders made His appearance uncertain.

Mrk 1:37 and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking…
Luk 2:44-45 Assuming He was in their company, they traveled on for a day…

and asking one another

Conversations among the crowd reflected growing concern over whether He would come despite the danger.

Act 2:12 Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another…
Jhn 4:33 So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone…
Luk 24:15 And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up…

as they stood in the temple courts,

The temple courts were filled with worshipers and visitors preparing for the feast, making them a natural setting for such public discussion.

Jhn 10:23 Jesus was walking in the temple courts…
Act 5:25 Then someone came in and announced, “Look,…
Luk 2:46 Finally, after three days they found Him in the temple…

“What do you think?

The people speculated about Jesus’ intentions and the response His presence might provoke.

Mat 21:28 But what do you think? There was a man who had two sons.…
Mat 22:17 So tell us what You think: Is it lawful to pay taxes…
Mat 17:25 Yes,” he answered. When Peter entered the house…

Will He come to the feast at all?”

Passover was a major gathering for Israel, but Jesus’ arrival would bring Him into open conflict with those seeking to arrest Him.

Jhn 7:11 So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast…
Jhn 7:8-10 Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going…
Jhn 7:14 About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up…

But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders

The chief priests, largely associated with the Sadducees, and the Pharisees held considerable influence over Jewish religious life and the Sanhedrin. Though divided on important beliefs, they united against Jesus as His teaching, miracles, and public following challenged their authority.

Jhn 7:32 When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering…
Mat 26:3-4 At that time the chief priests and elders of the people…
Mrk 14:1-2 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread…

that anyone who knew where He was must report it,

Jerusalem was crowded with pilgrims preparing for Passover, and Jesus’ presence was widely anticipated. The leaders sought information from the public so they could find Him before His influence produced further unrest or drew Roman attention.

Mat 2:8 And sending them to Bethlehem, he said: “Go and search…
2Ki 6:13 So the king said, “Go and see where he is,”…
Jhn 18:2-3 Now Judas His betrayer also knew the place,…

so that they could arrest Him.

Their purpose was not a fair examination of Jesus’ claims but His removal. The order set in motion the events that would lead to His arrest, trial, crucifixion, and the fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption.

Mat 26:47-50 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve,…
Mrk 14:43-46 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve…
Luk 22:52-53 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple officers,…
