Pharisees and Sadducees Seek a Sign

(Mark 8:11-13; Luke 12:54-56)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.1And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.1The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.1The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.1The Pharisees and Sadducees approached, and as a test, asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.
2He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,'2He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’2But He replied to them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'2He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.2He answered them: "When evening comes you say, It will be good weather because the sky is red.'
3and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.3And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.3"And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?3And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?3And in the morning, Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can't read the signs of the times.
4A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.4An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.4"An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away.4A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.4An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." Then He left them and went away.

Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

(Mark 8:14-21)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
5When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.5When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread.5And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread.5And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.5The disciples reached the other shore, and they had forgotten to take bread.
6"Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."6Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”6And Jesus said to them, "Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."6Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.6Then Jesus told them, "Watch out and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
7They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."7And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.”7They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, "He said that because we did not bring any bread."7And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.7And they discussed among themselves, "We didn't bring any bread."
8Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?8But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?8But Jesus, aware of this, said, "You men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread?8Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?8Aware of this, Jesus said, "You of little faith! Why are you discussing among yourselves that you do not have bread?

9Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?9Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?9"Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets full you picked up?9Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?9Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves for the 5,000 and how many baskets you collected?
10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?10"Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets full you picked up?10Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?10Or the seven loaves for the 4,000 and how many large baskets you collected?
11How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."11How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”11"How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."11How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?11Why is it you don't understand that when I told you, Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees,' it wasn't about bread?"
12Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.12Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.12Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.12Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.12Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the yeast in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.21From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.21From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.21From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.21From then on Jesus began to point out to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.
22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"22And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”22Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You."22Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.22Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, "Oh no, Lord! This will never happen to You!"
23Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns."23But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”23But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."23But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.23But He turned and told Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me because you're not thinking about God's concerns, but man's."

Take Up Your Cross

(Matthew 10:37-39; Mark 8:34-38; Luke 9:23-27)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
24Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.24Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.24Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.24Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.24Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.
25For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.25For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.25"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.25For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will find it.
26What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?26For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?26"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?26What will it benefit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?
27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.27For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.27"For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS.27For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.27For the Son of Man is going to come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will reward each according to what he has done.
28"Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."28Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”28"Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."28Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.28I assure you: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."
