1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in union with the Messiah Jesus.

1Οὐδὲν ἄρα νῦν κατάκριμα τοῖς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ⧼μὴ κατὰ σάρκα περιπατοῦσιν ἀλλὰ κατὰ πνεῦμα⧽

2For the Spirit's law of life in the Messiah Jesus has set me free from the Law of sin and death.

2ὁ γὰρ νόμος τοῦ Πνεύματος τῆς ζωῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἠλευθέρωσέν σε ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου τῆς ἁμαρτίας καὶ τοῦ θανάτου

3For what the Law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did. By sending his own Son in the form of humanity, he condemned sin by being incarnate,

3τὸ γὰρ ἀδύνατον τοῦ νόμου ἐν ᾧ ἠσθένει διὰ τῆς σαρκός ὁ Θεὸς τὸν ἑαυτοῦ Υἱὸν πέμψας ἐν ὁμοιώματι σαρκὸς ἁμαρτίας καὶ περὶ ἁμαρτίας κατέκρινεν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ἐν τῇ σαρκί

4so that the righteous requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not live according to human nature but according to the Spirit.

4ἵνα τὸ δικαίωμα τοῦ νόμου πληρωθῇ ἐν ἡμῖν τοῖς μὴ κατὰ σάρκα περιπατοῦσιν ἀλλὰ κατὰ πνεῦμα

5For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

5Οἱ γὰρ κατὰ σάρκα ὄντες τὰ τῆς σαρκὸς φρονοῦσιν οἱ δὲ κατὰ πνεῦμα τὰ τοῦ πνεύματος

6To focus our minds on the human nature leads to death, but to focus our minds on the Spirit leads to life and peace.

6τὸ γὰρ φρόνημα τῆς σαρκὸς θάνατος τὸ δὲ φρόνημα τοῦ πνεύματος ζωὴ καὶ εἰρήνη

7That is why the mind that focuses on human nature is hostile toward God. It refuses to submit to the authority of God's Law because it is powerless to do so.

7διότι τὸ φρόνημα τῆς σαρκὸς ἔχθρα εἰς Θεόν τῷ γὰρ νόμῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐχ ὑποτάσσεται οὐδὲ γὰρ δύναται

8Indeed, those who are under the control of human nature cannot please God.

8οἱ δὲ ἐν σαρκὶ ὄντες Θεῷ ἀρέσαι οὐ δύνανται

9You, however, are not under the control of the human nature but under the control of the Spirit, since God's Spirit lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of the Messiah, he does not belong to him.

9Ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σαρκὶ ἀλλὰ ἐν πνεύματι εἴπερ Πνεῦμα Θεοῦ οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν εἰ δέ τις Πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ οὐκ ἔχει οὗτος οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῦ

10But if the Messiah is in you, your bodies are dead due to sin, but the spirit is alive due to righteousness.

10εἰ δὲ Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν τὸ μὲν σῶμα νεκρὸν διὰ ἁμαρτίαν τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα ζωὴ διὰ δικαιοσύνην

11And if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then the one who raised the Messiah from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive by his Spirit who lives in you.

11εἰ δὲ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ ἐγείραντος τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐκ νεκρῶν οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν ὁ ἐγείρας «ἐκ νεκρῶν» Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν ζωοποιήσει καὶ τὰ θνητὰ σώματα ὑμῶν διὰ τοῦ ἐνοικοῦντος αὐτοῦ Πνεύματος ἐν ὑμῖν

12Consequently, brothers, we are not—with respect to human nature, that is—under an obligation to live according to human nature.

12Ἄρα οὖν ἀδελφοί ὀφειλέται ἐσμέν οὐ τῇ σαρκὶ τοῦ κατὰ σάρκα ζῆν

13For if you live according to human nature, you are going to die, but if by the Spirit you continuously put to death the activities of the body, you will live.

13εἰ γὰρ κατὰ σάρκα ζῆτε μέλλετε ἀποθνήσκειν εἰ δὲ πνεύματι τὰς πράξεις τοῦ σώματος θανατοῦτε ζήσεσθε

14For all who are led by God's Spirit are God's children.

14ὅσοι γὰρ Πνεύματι Θεοῦ ἄγονται οὗτοι υἱοί εἰσιν Θεοῦ

15For you have not received a spirit of slavery that leads you into fear again. Instead, you have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba! Father!"

15Οὐ γὰρ ἐλάβετε πνεῦμα δουλείας πάλιν εἰς φόβον ἀλλὰ ἐλάβετε πνεῦμα υἱοθεσίας ἐν ᾧ κράζομεν Ἀββᾶ ὁ Πατήρ

16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

16αὐτὸ τὸ Πνεῦμα συμμαρτυρεῖ τῷ πνεύματι ἡμῶν ὅτι ἐσμὲν τέκνα Θεοῦ

17Now if we are children, we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with the Messiah —if, in fact, we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

17εἰ δὲ τέκνα καὶ κληρονόμοι κληρονόμοι μὲν Θεοῦ συνκληρονόμοι δὲ Χριστοῦ εἴπερ συμπάσχομεν ἵνα καὶ συνδοξασθῶμεν

18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed to us.

18Λογίζομαι γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ ἄξια τὰ παθήματα τοῦ νῦν καιροῦ πρὸς τὴν μέλλουσαν δόξαν ἀποκαλυφθῆναι εἰς ἡμᾶς

19For the creation is eagerly awaiting the revelation of God's children,

19ἡ γὰρ ἀποκαραδοκία τῆς κτίσεως τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν τῶν υἱῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀπεκδέχεται

20because the creation has become subject to futility, though not by anything it did. The one who subjected it did so in the certainty

20τῇ γὰρ ματαιότητι ἡ κτίσις ὑπετάγη οὐχ ἑκοῦσα ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν ὑποτάξαντα ἐφ’ ἑλπίδι

21that the creation itself would also be set free from corrupting bondage in order to share the glorious freedom of God's children.

21ὅτι* καὶ αὐτὴ ἡ κτίσις ἐλευθερωθήσεται ἀπὸ τῆς δουλείας τῆς φθορᾶς εἰς τὴν ἐλευθερίαν τῆς δόξης τῶν τέκνων τοῦ Θεοῦ

22For we know that all the rest of creation has been groaning with the pains of childbirth up to the present time.

22Οἴδαμεν γὰρ ὅτι πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις συστενάζει καὶ συνωδίνει ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν

23However, not only the creation, but we who have the first fruits of the Spirit also groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

23οὐ μόνον δέ ἀλλὰ καὶ αὐτοὶ τὴν ἀπαρχὴν τοῦ Πνεύματος ἔχοντες ἡμεῖς καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς στενάζομεν υἱοθεσίαν ἀπεκδεχόμενοι τὴν ἀπολύτρωσιν τοῦ σώματος ἡμῶν

24For we were saved with this hope in mind. Now a hope that can be observed is not really hope, for who hopes for what can be seen?

24τῇ γὰρ ἐλπίδι ἐσώθημεν ἐλπὶς δὲ βλεπομένη οὐκ ἔστιν ἐλπίς ὃ γὰρ βλέπει τις τί ἐλπίζει

25But if we hope for what we do not yet observe, we eagerly wait for it with patience.

25εἰ δὲ ὃ οὐ βλέπομεν ἐλπίζομεν δι’ ὑπομονῆς ἀπεκδεχόμεθα

26In the same way, the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, since we do not know how to pray as we should. But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words,

26Ὡσαύτως δὲ καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα συναντιλαμβάνεται τῇ ἀσθενείᾳ ἡμῶν τὸ γὰρ τί προσευξώμεθα καθὸ δεῖ οὐκ οἴδαμεν ἀλλὰ αὐτὸ τὸ Πνεῦμα ὑπερεντυγχάνει στεναγμοῖς ἀλαλήτοις

27and the one who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, for the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to God's will.

27ὁ δὲ ἐραυνῶν τὰς καρδίας οἶδεν τί τὸ φρόνημα τοῦ Πνεύματος ὅτι κατὰ Θεὸν ἐντυγχάνει ὑπὲρ ἁγίων

28And we know that for those who love God, that is, for those who are called according to his purpose, all things are working together for good.

28Οἴδαμεν δὲ ὅτι τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν τὸν Θεὸν πάντα συνεργεῖ (ὁ θεὸς) εἰς ἀγαθόν τοῖς κατὰ πρόθεσιν κλητοῖς οὖσιν

29For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that the Son might be the firstborn among many brothers.

29ὅτι οὓς προέγνω καὶ προώρισεν συμμόρφους τῆς εἰκόνος τοῦ Υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν πρωτότοκον ἐν πολλοῖς ἀδελφοῖς

30And those whom he predestined, he also called; and those whom he called, he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.

30οὓς δὲ προώρισεν τούτους καὶ ἐκάλεσεν καὶ οὓς ἐκάλεσεν τούτους καὶ ἐδικαίωσεν οὓς δὲ ἐδικαίωσεν τούτους καὶ ἐδόξασεν

31What, then, can we say about all of this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

31Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν πρὸς ταῦτα εἰ ὁ Θεὸς ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν τίς καθ’ ἡμῶν

32The one who did not spare his own Son, but offered him as a sacrifice for all of us, surely will give us all things, along with his Son, won't he?

32ὅς γε τοῦ ἰδίου Υἱοῦ οὐκ ἐφείσατο ἀλλὰ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πάντων παρέδωκεν αὐτόν πῶς οὐχὶ καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ τὰ πάντα ἡμῖν χαρίσεται

33Who will accuse God's elect? It is God who justifies!

33τίς ἐγκαλέσει κατὰ ἐκλεκτῶν Θεοῦ Θεὸς ὁ δικαιῶν

34Who is the one to condemn? It is the Messiah Jesus who is interceding on our behalf. He died, and more importantly, has been raised and is seated at the right hand of God.

34τίς ὁ κατακρινῶν Χριστὸς Ἰησοῦς ὁ ἀποθανών μᾶλλον δὲ ἐγερθείς (ἐκ νεκρῶν) ὅς ‹καί› ἐστιν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ Θεοῦ ὃς καὶ ἐντυγχάνει ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν

35Who will separate us from the Messiah's love? Can trouble, distress, persecution, hunger, nakedness, danger, or a violent death do this?

35Τίς ἡμᾶς χωρίσει ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Χριστοῦ θλῖψις ἢ στενοχωρία ἢ διωγμὸς ἢ λιμὸς ἢ γυμνότης ἢ κίνδυνος ἢ μάχαιρα

36As it is written, "For your sake we are being put to death all day long. We are thought of as sheep headed for slaughter."

36καθὼς γέγραπται ὅτι Ἕνεκεν σοῦ θανατούμεθα ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐλογίσθημεν ὡς πρόβατα σφαγῆς

37In all these things we are triumphantly victorious due to the one who loved us.

37Ἀλλ’ ἐν τούτοις πᾶσιν ὑπερνικῶμεν διὰ τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντος ἡμᾶς

38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,

38πέπεισμαι γὰρ ὅτι οὔτε θάνατος οὔτε ζωὴ οὔτε ἄγγελοι οὔτε ἀρχαὶ οὔτε ἐνεστῶτα οὔτε μέλλοντα οὔτε δυνάμεις

39nor anything above, nor anything below, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is ours in union with the Messiah Jesus, our Lord.

39οὔτε ὕψωμα οὔτε βάθος οὔτε τις κτίσις ἑτέρα δυνήσεται ἡμᾶς χωρίσαι ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Θεοῦ τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν
