Matthew 10

The Twelve Apostles
(Mark 3:13–19; Luke 6:12–16)

1 Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having summoned) τοὺς (the) δώδεκα (twelve) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔδωκεν (He gave) αὐτοῖς (them) ἐξουσίαν (authority) πνευμάτων (over spirits) ἀκαθάρτων (unclean) ὥστε (so as) ἐκβάλλειν (to cast out) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) θεραπεύειν (to heal) πᾶσαν (every) νόσον (disease) καὶ (and) πᾶσαν (every) μαλακίαν (sickness).

2 Τῶν (-) δὲ (And) δώδεκα (of the twelve) ἀποστόλων (apostles) τὰ (the) ὀνόματά (names) ἐστιν (are) ταῦτα (these)· πρῶτος (first) Σίμων (Simon) (who is) λεγόμενος (called) Πέτρος (Peter) καὶ (and) Ἀνδρέας (Andrew) (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) Ἰάκωβος (James) (the son) τοῦ (of) Ζεβεδαίου (Zebedee) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John) (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), 3 Φίλιππος (Philip) καὶ (and) Βαρθολομαῖος (Bartholomew), Θωμᾶς (Thomas) καὶ (and) Μαθθαῖος (Matthew) (the) τελώνης (tax collector), Ἰάκωβος (James) (the son) τοῦ (-) Ἁλφαίου (of Alphaeus) καὶ (and) Θαδδαῖος (Thaddaeus), 4 Σίμων (Simon) (the) Καναναῖος (Cananean) καὶ (and) Ἰούδας (Judas) (-) Ἰσκαριώτης (Iscariot) (the one) καὶ (also) παραδοὺς (having betrayed) αὐτόν (Him).

5 Τούτους (These) τοὺς (-) δώδεκα (twelve) ἀπέστειλεν (sent forth) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) παραγγείλας (having instructed) αὐτοῖς (them) λέγων (saying)· Εἰς (Into) ὁδὸν (the way) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles) μὴ (not) ἀπέλθητε (go off) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πόλιν (a city) Σαμαριτῶν (of the Samaritans) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (enter)· 6 πορεύεσθε (go) δὲ (however) μᾶλλον (rather) πρὸς (to) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) τὰ (-) ἀπολωλότα (lost) οἴκου (of the house) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel). 7 πορευόμενοι (Going) δὲ (then) κηρύσσετε (proclaim) λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-) Ἤγγικεν (Has drawn near) (The) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). 8 ἀσθενοῦντας (The ailing) θεραπεύετε (heal), νεκροὺς (the dead) ἐγείρετε (raise), λεπροὺς (the lepers) καθαρίζετε (cleanse), δαιμόνια (demons) ἐκβάλλετε (cast out)· δωρεὰν (freely) ἐλάβετε (you⁺ received), δωρεὰν (freely) δότε (give).

9 Μὴ (Neither) κτήσησθε (acquire) χρυσὸν (gold) μηδὲ (nor) ἄργυρον (silver) μηδὲ (nor) χαλκὸν (copper) εἰς (in) τὰς (the) ζώνας (belts) ὑμῶν (of you⁺), 10 μὴ (nor) πήραν (a bag) εἰς (for) ὁδὸν (the way) μηδὲ (nor) δύο (two) χιτῶνας (tunics) μηδὲ (nor) ὑποδήματα (sandals) μηδὲ (nor) ῥάβδον (a staff)· ἄξιος (worthy is) γὰρ (for) (the) ἐργάτης (worker) τῆς (of the) τροφῆς (food) αὐτοῦ (of him).

11 Εἰς (Into) ἣν (whatever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) πόλιν (city) (or) κώμην (village) εἰσέλθητε (you⁺ may enter), ἐξετάσατε (inquire) τίς (who) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it) ἄξιός (worthy) ἐστιν (is)· κἀκεῖ (and there) μείνατε (remain) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἐξέλθητε (you⁺ may go out). 12 εἰσερχόμενοι (Entering) δὲ (now) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) ἀσπάσασθε (greet) αὐτήν (it)· 13 καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) μὲν (indeed) (is) (the) οἰκία (house) ἀξία (worthy), ἐλθάτω (let come) (the) εἰρήνη (peace) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτήν (it)· ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) (it is) ἀξία (worthy), (the) εἰρήνη (peace) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἐπιστραφήτω (let return). 14 καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) μὴ (not) δέξηται (may receive) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) μηδὲ (nor) ἀκούσῃ (hear) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) ὑμῶν (of you⁺), ἐξερχόμενοι (going forth) ἔξω (out) τῆς (of the) οἰκίας (house) (or) τῆς (of the) πόλεως (city) ἐκείνης (that) ἐκτινάξατε (shake off) τὸν (the) κονιορτὸν (dust) τῶν (of the) ποδῶν (feet) ὑμῶν (of you⁺). 15 ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), ἀνεκτότερον (More bearable) ἔσται (it will be) γῇ (for the land) Σοδόμων (of Sodom) καὶ (and) Γομόρρων (of Gomorrah) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) κρίσεως (of judgment) (than) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ἐκείνῃ (for that).

16 Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (send forth) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ὡς (as) πρόβατα (sheep) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) λύκων (of wolves)· γίνεσθε (be) οὖν (therefore) φρόνιμοι (shrewd) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) ὄφεις (serpents) καὶ (and) ἀκέραιοι (innocent) ὡς (as) αἱ (the) περιστεραί (doves). 17 Προσέχετε (Beware) δὲ (however) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men)· παραδώσουσιν (they will deliver up) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) εἰς (into) συνέδρια (the councils), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) αὐτῶν (of them) μαστιγώσουσιν (they will flog) ὑμᾶς (you⁺)· 18 καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (before) ἡγεμόνας (governors) δὲ (and) καὶ (also) βασιλεῖς (kings) ἀχθήσεσθε (you⁺ will be led) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me), εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) αὐτοῖς (to them) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (nations). 19 ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) παραδῶσιν (they may deliver up) ὑμᾶς (you⁺), μὴ (not) μεριμνήσητε (be anxious) πῶς (how) (or) τί (what) λαλήσητε (you⁺ shall speak)· δοθήσεται (it will be given) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour) τί (what) λαλήσητε (you⁺ shall speak)· 20 οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) ἐστε (are) οἱ (the ones) λαλοῦντες (speaking) ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) τὸ (-) λαλοῦν (speaking) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you⁺).

21 Παραδώσει (Will deliver up) δὲ (now) ἀδελφὸς (brother) ἀδελφὸν (brother) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death) καὶ (and) πατὴρ (father) τέκνον (child), καὶ (And) ἐπαναστήσονται (will rise up) τέκνα (children) ἐπὶ (against) γονεῖς (parents) καὶ (and) θανατώσουσιν (will put to death) αὐτούς (them). 22 καὶ (And) ἔσεσθε (you⁺ will be) μισούμενοι (hated) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all) διὰ (because of) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me)· (the one) δὲ (however) ὑπομείνας (having endured) εἰς (to) τέλος (the end), οὗτος (this one) σωθήσεται (will be saved).

23 Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) διώκωσιν (they may persecute) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) πόλει (city) ταύτῃ (one), φεύγετε (flee) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ἑτέραν (other)· ἀμὴν (Truly) γὰρ (for) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τελέσητε (shall you⁺ have completed) τὰς (the) πόλεις (cities) τοῦ (of) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἔλθῃ (shall come) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of) ἀνθρώπου (Man).

24 Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) μαθητὴς (a disciple) ὑπὲρ (above) τὸν (the) διδάσκαλον (teacher) οὐδὲ (nor) δοῦλος (a servant) ὑπὲρ (above) τὸν (the) κύριον (master) αὐτοῦ (of him). 25 ἀρκετὸν (sufficient) τῷ (to the) μαθητῇ (disciple) ἵνα (is that) γένηται (he may become) ὡς (like) (the) διδάσκαλος (teacher) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) (the) δοῦλος (servant) ὡς (like) (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him). εἰ (If) τὸν (the) οἰκοδεσπότην (master of the house) Βεελζεβοὺλ (Beelzebul) ἐπεκάλεσαν (they have called), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τοὺς (the) οἰκιακοὺς (members of the household) αὐτοῦ (of him).

Fear God Alone

26 Μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) φοβηθῆτε (fear) αὐτούς (them)· οὐδὲν (nothing) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) κεκαλυμμένον (concealed) (that) οὐκ (not) ἀποκαλυφθήσεται (will be revealed), καὶ (and) κρυπτὸν (hidden) (that) οὐ (not) γνωσθήσεται (will be known). 27  (What) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), εἴπατε (say) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτί (light)· καὶ (and) (what) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) οὖς (ear) ἀκούετε (you⁺ hear), κηρύξατε (proclaim) ἐπὶ (upon) τῶν (the) δωμάτων (housetops).

28 Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) φοβεῖσθε (be afraid) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (those) ἀποκτεννόντων (killing) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body), τὴν (the) δὲ (however) ψυχὴν (soul) μὴ (not) δυναμένων (being able) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill)· φοβεῖσθε (fear) δὲ (however) μᾶλλον (rather) τὸν (the One) δυνάμενον (being able) καὶ (both) ψυχὴν (soul) καὶ (and) σῶμα (body) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy) ἐν (in) γεέννῃ (Gehenna).

29 Οὐχὶ (Not) δύο (two) στρουθία (sparrows) ἀσσαρίου (for an assarion) πωλεῖται (are sold)? καὶ (And) ἓν (one) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) οὐ (not) πεσεῖται (will fall) ἐπὶ (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground) ἄνευ (apart from) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) ὑμῶν (of you⁺). 30 ὑμῶν (Of you⁺) δὲ (now) καὶ (even) αἱ (the) τρίχες (hairs) τῆς (of the) κεφαλῆς (head) πᾶσαι (all) ἠριθμημέναι (numbered) εἰσίν (are). 31 μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) φοβεῖσθε (be afraid)· πολλῶν (than many) στρουθίων (sparrows) διαφέρετε (are more valuable) ὑμεῖς (you⁺).

Confessing Christ
