While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,1Λαλούντων δὲ αὐτῶν πρὸς τὸν λαὸν ἐπέστησαν αὐτοῖς οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ οἱ Σαδδουκαῖοι
greatly disturbed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.2διαπονούμενοι διὰ τὸ διδάσκειν αὐτοὺς τὸν λαὸν καὶ καταγγέλλειν ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ τὴν ἀνάστασιν τὴν ἐκ νεκρῶν
They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in custody until the next day.3καὶ ἐπέβαλον αὐτοῖς τὰς χεῖρας καὶ ἔθεντο εἰς τήρησιν εἰς τὴν αὔριον ἦν γὰρ ἑσπέρα ἤδη
But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.4πολλοὶ δὲ τῶν ἀκουσάντων τὸν λόγον ἐπίστευσαν καὶ ἐγενήθη ‹ὁ› ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἀνδρῶν ὡς χιλιάδες πέντε
The next day the rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem,5Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν αὔριον συναχθῆναι αὐτῶν τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ τοὺς γραμματεῖς ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ
along with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and many others from the high priest’s family.6καὶ Ἅννας ἀρχιερεὺς καὶ Καϊάφας καὶ Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος καὶ ὅσοι ἦσαν ἐκ γένους ἀρχιερατικοῦ
They had Peter and John brought in and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”7καὶ στήσαντες αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ μέσῳ ἐπυνθάνοντο Ἐν ποίᾳ δυνάμει ἐν ποίῳ ὀνόματι ἐποιήσατε τοῦτο ὑμεῖς
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people!8Τότε Πέτρος πλησθεὶς Πνεύματος Ἁγίου εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἄρχοντες τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ πρεσβύτεροι
If we are being examined today about a kind service to a man who was lame, to determine how he was healed,9εἰ ἡμεῖς σήμερον ἀνακρινόμεθα ἐπὶ εὐεργεσίᾳ ἀνθρώπου ἀσθενοῦς ἐν τίνι οὗτος σέσωσται
then let this be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.10γνωστὸν ἔστω πᾶσιν ὑμῖν καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου ὃν ὑμεῖς ἐσταυρώσατε ὃν Θεὸς ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐν τούτῳ οὗτος παρέστηκεν ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ὑγιής
This Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’11οὗτός ἐστιν λίθος ἐξουθενηθεὶς ὑφ’ ὑμῶν τῶν οἰκοδόμων γενόμενος εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας
Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”12Καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἄλλῳ οὐδενὶ σωτηρία οὐδὲ γὰρ ὄνομά ἐστιν ἕτερον ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανὸν τὸ δεδομένον ἐν ἀνθρώποις ἐν δεῖ σωθῆναι ἡμᾶς
When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they marveled and took note that these men had been with Jesus.13Θεωροῦντες δὲ τὴν τοῦ Πέτρου παρρησίαν καὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ καταλαβόμενοι ὅτι ἄνθρωποι ἀγράμματοί εἰσιν καὶ ἰδιῶται ἐθαύμαζον ἐπεγίνωσκόν τε αὐτοὺς ὅτι σὺν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἦσαν
And seeing the man who had been healed standing there with them, they had nothing to say in response.14τόν τε ἄνθρωπον βλέποντες σὺν αὐτοῖς ἑστῶτα τὸν τεθεραπευμένον οὐδὲν εἶχον ἀντειπεῖν
So they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.15κελεύσαντες δὲ αὐτοὺς ἔξω τοῦ συνεδρίου ἀπελθεῖν συνέβαλλον πρὸς ἀλλήλους
“What shall we do with these men?” they asked. “It is clear to everyone living in Jerusalem that a remarkable miracle has occurred through them, and we cannot deny it.16λέγοντες Τί ποιήσωμεν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τούτοις ὅτι μὲν γὰρ γνωστὸν σημεῖον γέγονεν δι’ αὐτῶν πᾶσιν τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν Ἰερουσαλὴμ φανερόν καὶ οὐ δυνάμεθα ἀρνεῖσθαι
But to keep this message from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in this name.”17ἀλλ’ ἵνα μὴ ἐπὶ πλεῖον διανεμηθῇ εἰς τὸν λαόν ἀπειλησώμεθα αὐτοῖς μηκέτι λαλεῖν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ μηδενὶ ἀνθρώπων
Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.18Καὶ καλέσαντες αὐτοὺς παρήγγειλαν ‹τὸ› καθόλου μὴ φθέγγεσθαι μηδὲ διδάσκειν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than God.19 δὲ Πέτρος καὶ Ἰωάννης ἀποκριθέντες εἶπον πρὸς αὐτούς Εἰ δίκαιόν ἐστιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑμῶν ἀκούειν μᾶλλον τοῦ Θεοῦ κρίνατε
For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”20οὐ δυνάμεθα γὰρ ἡμεῖς εἴδαμεν καὶ ἠκούσαμεν μὴ λαλεῖν
After further threats they let them go. They could not find a way to punish them, because all the people were glorifying God for what had happened.21Οἱ δὲ προσαπειλησάμενοι ἀπέλυσαν αὐτούς μηδὲν εὑρίσκοντες τὸ πῶς κολάσωνται αὐτούς διὰ τὸν λαόν ὅτι πάντες ἐδόξαζον τὸν Θεὸν ἐπὶ τῷ γεγονότι
For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.22ἐτῶν γὰρ ἦν πλειόνων τεσσεράκοντα ἄνθρωπος ἐφ’ ὃν γεγόνει τὸ σημεῖον τοῦτο τῆς ἰάσεως
On their release, Peter and John returned to their own people and reported everything that the chief priests and elders had said to them.23Ἀπολυθέντες δὲ ἦλθον πρὸς τοὺς ἰδίους καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν ὅσα πρὸς αὐτοὺς οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι εἶπαν
When the believers heard this, they lifted up their voices to God with one accord. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “You made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them.24οἱ δὲ ἀκούσαντες ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἦραν φωνὴν πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν καὶ εἶπαν Δέσποτα σὺ ποιήσας τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτοῖς
You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of Your servant, our father David: ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?25 τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν διὰ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου στόματος Δαυὶδ παιδός σου εἰπών Ἵνα‿ Τί ἐφρύαξαν ἔθνη καὶ λαοὶ ἐμελέτησαν κενά
The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against His Anointed One.’26παρέστησαν οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ κατὰ τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ κατὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ αὐτοῦ
In fact, this is the very city where Herod and Pontius Pilate conspired with the Gentiles and the people of Israel against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed.27Συνήχθησαν γὰρ ἐπ’ ἀληθείας ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ ἐπὶ τὸν ἅγιον Παῖδά σου Ἰησοῦν ὃν ἔχρισας Ἡρῴδης τε καὶ Πόντιος Πιλᾶτος σὺν ἔθνεσιν καὶ λαοῖς Ἰσραήλ
They carried out what Your hand and will had decided beforehand would happen.28ποιῆσαι ὅσα χείρ σου καὶ βουλὴ [σου] προώρισεν γενέσθαι
And now, Lord, consider their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness,29καὶ τὰ νῦν Κύριε ἔπιδε ἐπὶ τὰς ἀπειλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ δὸς τοῖς δούλοις σου μετὰ παρρησίας πάσης λαλεῖν τὸν λόγον σου
as You stretch out Your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.”30ἐν τῷ τὴν χεῖρά ‹σου› ἐκτείνειν σε εἰς ἴασιν καὶ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα γίνεσθαι διὰ τοῦ ὀνόματος τοῦ ἁγίου Παιδός σου Ἰησοῦ
After they had prayed, their meeting place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.31Καὶ δεηθέντων αὐτῶν ἐσαλεύθη τόπος ἐν ἦσαν συνηγμένοι καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν ἅπαντες τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος καὶ ἐλάλουν τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ μετὰ παρρησίας
The multitude of believers was one in heart and soul. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they owned.32Τοῦ δὲ πλήθους τῶν πιστευσάντων ἦν καρδία καὶ ψυχὴ μία καὶ οὐδὲ εἷς τι τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐτῷ ἔλεγεν ἴδιον εἶναι ἀλλ’ ἦν αὐτοῖς πάντα κοινά
With great power the apostles continued to give their testimony about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And abundant grace was upon them all.33καὶ δυνάμει μεγάλῃ ἀπεδίδουν τὸ μαρτύριον οἱ ἀπόστολοι «τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ» «τῆς ἀναστάσεως» χάρις τε μεγάλη ἦν ἐπὶ πάντας αὐτούς
There were no needy ones among them, because those who owned lands or houses would sell their property, bring the proceeds from the sales,34Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐνδεής τις ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς ὅσοι γὰρ κτήτορες χωρίων οἰκιῶν ὑπῆρχον πωλοῦντες ἔφερον τὰς τιμὰς τῶν πιπρασκομένων
and lay them at the apostles’ feet for distribution to anyone as he had need.35καὶ ἐτίθουν παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τῶν ἀποστόλων διεδίδετο δὲ ἑκάστῳ καθότι ἄν τις χρείαν εἶχεν
Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (meaning Son of Encouragement),36Ἰωσὴφ δὲ ἐπικληθεὶς Βαρνάβας ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποστόλων ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Υἱὸς παρακλήσεως Λευίτης Κύπριος τῷ γένει
sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.37ὑπάρχοντος αὐτῷ ἀγροῦ πωλήσας ἤνεγκεν τὸ χρῆμα καὶ ἔθηκεν πρὸς τοὺς πόδας τῶν ἀποστόλων
