1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus.

1Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἤκουσεν Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετραάρχης τὴν ἀκοὴν Ἰησοῦ

2"This is John the Baptist," he told his servants. "He has been raised from the dead, and that's why miraculous powers are at work in him."

2καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ Οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰωάννης ὁ Βαπτιστής αὐτὸς ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ διὰ τοῦτο αἱ δυνάμεις ἐνεργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτῷ

3For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,

3Ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάνην ἔδησεν ‹αὐτὸν› καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ ἀπέθετο διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ

4since John had been telling him, "It's not lawful for you to have her."

4ἔλεγεν γὰρ «ὁ Ἰωάννης» αὐτῷ Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν αὐτήν

5Though Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd since they regarded John as a prophet.

5καὶ θέλων αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι ἐφοβήθη τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ὡς προφήτην αὐτὸν εἶχον

6When Herod's birthday celebration came, Herodias's daughter danced before them and pleased Herod.

6Γενεσίοις δὲ γενομένοις τοῦ Ἡρῴδου ὠρχήσατο ἡ θυγάτηρ τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος ἐν τῷ μέσῳ καὶ ἤρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ

7So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.

7ὅθεν μεθ’ ὅρκου ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ δοῦναι ὃ ἐὰν αἰτήσηται

8Prompted by her mother, she answered, "Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter."

8Ἡ δὲ προβιβασθεῖσα ὑπὸ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς Δός μοι φησίν Ὧδε ἐπὶ πίνακι τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ

9Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests.

9Καὶ λυπηθεὶς ὁ βασιλεὺς διὰ τοὺς ὅρκους καὶ τοὺς συνανακειμένους ἐκέλευσεν δοθῆναι

10So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison.

10καὶ πέμψας ἀπεκεφάλισεν ‹τὸν› Ἰωάννην ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ

11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.

11Καὶ ἠνέχθη ἡ κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἐδόθη τῷ κορασίῳ καὶ ἤνεγκεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς

12Then his disciples came, removed the corpse, buried it, and went and reported to Jesus.

12καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦραν τὸ πτῶμα καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτόν καὶ ἐλθόντες ἀπήγγειλαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ

13When Jesus heard about it, he withdrew from there by boat to a remote place to be alone. When the crowds heard this, they followed him on foot from the towns.

13Ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν ἐν πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατ’ ἰδίαν καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ πεζῇ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων

14When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd, had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

14Καὶ ἐξελθὼν εἶδεν πολὺν ὄχλον καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν τοὺς ἀρρώστους αὐτῶν

15When evening came, the disciples approached him and said, "This place is deserted, and it is already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."

15Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Ἔρημός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος καὶ ἡ ὥρα ἤδη παρῆλθεν ἀπόλυσον 〈οὖν〉 τοὺς ὄχλους ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὰς κώμας ἀγοράσωσιν ἑαυτοῖς βρώματα

16"They don't need to go away," Jesus told them. "You give them something to eat."

16Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν ἀπελθεῖν δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν

17"But we only have five loaves and two fish here," they said to him.

17Οἱ δὲ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Οὐκ ἔχομεν ὧδε εἰ μὴ πέντε ἄρτους καὶ δύο ἰχθύας

18"Bring them here to me," he said.

18Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Φέρετέ μοι ὧδε αὐτούς

19Then he commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

19καὶ κελεύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνακλιθῆναι ἐπὶ τοῦ χόρτου λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησεν καὶ κλάσας ἔδωκεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς τοὺς ἄρτους οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις

20Everyone ate and was satisfied. They picked up twelve baskets full of leftover pieces.

20Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν καὶ ἦραν τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων δώδεκα κοφίνους πλήρεις

21Now those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

21οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν ἄνδρες ὡσεὶ πεντακισχίλιοι χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων

22Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

22Καὶ εὐθέως ἠνάγκασεν τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν ἕως οὗ ἀπολύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους

23After dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. Well into the night, he was there alone.

23καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος κατ’ ἰδίαν προσεύξασθαι ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης μόνος ἦν ἐκεῖ

24Meanwhile, the boat was already some distance from land, battered by the waves, because the wind was against them.

24τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη σταδίους πολλοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀπεῖχεν βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος

25Jesus came toward them walking on the sea very early in the morning.

25Τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν

26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they said, and they cried out in fear.

26οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπατοῦντα ἐταράχθησαν λέγοντες ὅτι Φάντασμά ἐστιν καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἔκραξαν

27Immediately Jesus spoke to them. "Have courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

27Εὐθὺς δὲ ἐλάλησεν «ὁ Ἰησοῦς» αὐτοῖς λέγων Θαρσεῖτε ἐγώ εἰμι μὴ φοβεῖσθε

28"Lord, if it's you," Peter answered him, "command me to come to you on the water."

28Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν Κύριε εἰ σὺ εἶ κέλευσόν με ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σὲ ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα

29He said, "Come." And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus.

29Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ἐλθέ Καὶ καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου [ὁ] Πέτρος περιεπάτησεν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν

30But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me!"

30βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ‹ἰσχυρὸν› ἐφοβήθη καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι ἔκραξεν λέγων Κύριε σῶσόν με

31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"

31Εὐθέως δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὀλιγόπιστε εἰς τί ἐδίστασας

32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

32Καὶ ἀναβάντων αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος

33Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, "Truly you are the Son of God."

33οἱ δὲ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ Υἱὸς εἶ

34When they had crossed over, they came to shore at Gennesaret.

34Καὶ διαπεράσαντες ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν εἰς Γεννησαρέτ

35When the men of that place recognized him, they alerted the whole vicinity and brought to him all who were sick.

35καὶ ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου ἀπέστειλαν εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον ἐκείνην καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας

36They begged him that they might only touch the end of his robe, and as many as touched it were healed.

36καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μόνον ἅψωνται τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ καὶ ὅσοι ἥψαντο διεσώθησαν
