"Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward with your Father in heaven.1Προσέχετε δὲ τὴν δικαιοσύνην ὑμῶν μὴ ποιεῖν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι αὐτοῖς εἰ δὲ μή¦γε μισθὸν οὐκ ἔχετε παρὰ τῷ Πατρὶ ὑμῶν τῷ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
So whenever you give to the poor, don't sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be applauded by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.2Ὅταν οὖν ποιῇς ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ σαλπίσῃς ἔμπροσθέν σου ὥσπερ οἱ ὑποκριταὶ ποιοῦσιν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ ἐν ταῖς ῥύμαις ὅπως δοξασθῶσιν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν
But when you give to the poor, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,3σοῦ δὲ ποιοῦντος ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ γνώτω ἀριστερά σου τί ποιεῖ δεξιά σου
so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.4ὅπως σου ἐλεημοσύνη ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ καὶ Πατήρ σου βλέπων ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ ἀποδώσει σοι
"Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.5Καὶ ὅταν προσεύχησθε οὐκ ἔσεσθε ὡς οἱ ὑποκριταί ὅτι φιλοῦσιν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ ἐν ταῖς γωνίαις τῶν πλατειῶν ἑστῶτες προσεύχεσθαι ὅπως φανῶσιν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν
But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.6σὺ δὲ ὅταν προσεύχῃ εἴσελθε εἰς τὸ ταμεῖόν σου καὶ κλείσας τὴν θύραν σου πρόσευξαι τῷ Πατρί σου τῷ ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ καὶ Πατήρ σου βλέπων ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ ἀποδώσει σοι
When you pray, don't babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they'll be heard for their many words.7Προσευχόμενοι δὲ μὴ βατταλογήσητε ὥσπερ οἱ ἐθνικοί δοκοῦσιν γὰρ ὅτι ἐν τῇ πολυλογίᾳ αὐτῶν εἰσακουσθήσονται
Don't be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask him.8μὴ οὖν ὁμοιωθῆτε αὐτοῖς οἶδεν γὰρ (ὁ θεὸς) Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὧν χρείαν ἔχετε πρὸ τοῦ ὑμᾶς αἰτῆσαι αὐτόν
"Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy.9Οὕτως οὖν προσεύχεσθε ὑμεῖς Πάτερ ἡμῶν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς Ἁγιασθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σου
Your kingdom come. Your will be done10Ἐλθέτω* βασιλεία σου Γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου Ὡς ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.11Τὸν ἄρτον ἡμῶν τὸν ἐπιούσιον δὸς ἡμῖν σήμερον
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.12Καὶ ἄφες ἡμῖν τὰ ὀφειλήματα ἡμῶν Ὡς καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀφήκαμεν τοῖς ὀφειλέταις ἡμῶν
And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.13Καὶ μὴ εἰσενέγκῃς ἡμᾶς εἰς πειρασμόν Ἀλλὰ ῥῦσαι ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ ⧼Ὅτι σοῦ ἐστιν βασιλεία καὶ δύναμις καὶ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας Ἀμήν⧽
"For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well.14Ἐὰν γὰρ ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν ἀφήσει καὶ ὑμῖν Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος
But if you don't forgive others, your Father will not forgive your offenses.15ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις (τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν) οὐδὲ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἀφήσει τὰ παραπτώματα ὑμῶν
"Whenever you fast, don't be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they make their faces unattractive so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.16Ὅταν δὲ νηστεύητε μὴ γίνεσθε ὡς οἱ ὑποκριταὶ σκυθρωποί ἀφανίζουσιν γὰρ τὰ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν ὅπως φανῶσιν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις νηστεύοντες ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,17σὺ δὲ νηστεύων ἄλειψαί σου τὴν κεφαλὴν καὶ τὸ πρόσωπόν σου νίψαι
so that your fasting isn't obvious to others but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.18ὅπως μὴ φανῇς τοῖς ἀνθρώποις νηστεύων ἀλλὰ τῷ Πατρί σου τῷ ἐν τῷ κρυφαίῳ καὶ Πατήρ σου βλέπων ἐν τῷ κρυφαίῳ ἀποδώσει σοι
"Don't store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.19Μὴ θησαυρίζετε ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὅπου σὴς καὶ βρῶσις ἀφανίζει καὶ ὅπου κλέπται διορύσσουσιν καὶ κλέπτουσιν
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don't break in and steal.20θησαυρίζετε δὲ ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐν οὐρανῷ ὅπου οὔτε σὴς οὔτε βρῶσις ἀφανίζει καὶ ὅπου κλέπται οὐ διορύσσουσιν οὐδὲ κλέπτουσιν
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.21ὅπου γάρ ἐστιν θησαυρός σου ἐκεῖ ἔσται καὶ καρδία σου
"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.22 λύχνος τοῦ σώματός ἐστιν ὀφθαλμός ἐὰν οὖν ὀφθαλμός σου ἁπλοῦς ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου φωτεινὸν ἔσται
But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!23ἐὰν δὲ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρὸς ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου σκοτεινὸν ἔσται εἰ οὖν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἐν σοὶ σκότος ἐστίν τὸ σκότος πόσον
"No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.24Οὐδεὶς δύναται δυσὶ κυρίοις δουλεύειν γὰρ τὸν ἕνα μισήσει καὶ τὸν ἕτερον ἀγαπήσει ἑνὸς ἀνθέξεται καὶ τοῦ ἑτέρου καταφρονήσει οὐ δύνασθε Θεῷ δουλεύειν καὶ μαμωνᾷ
"Therefore I tell you: Don't worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing?25Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε τί πίητε μηδὲ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε οὐχὶ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος
Consider the birds of the sky: They don't sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth more than they?26ἐμβλέψατε εἰς τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ὅτι οὐ σπείρουσιν οὐδὲ θερίζουσιν οὐδὲ συνάγουσιν εἰς ἀποθήκας καὶ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος τρέφει αὐτά οὐχ ὑμεῖς μᾶλλον διαφέρετε αὐτῶν
Can any of you add one moment to his life-span by worrying?27τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται προσθεῖναι ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ πῆχυν ἕνα
And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don't labor or spin thread.28Καὶ περὶ ἐνδύματος τί μεριμνᾶτε καταμάθετε τὰ κρίνα τοῦ ἀγροῦ πῶς αὐξάνουσιν οὐ κοπιῶσιν οὐδὲ νήθουσιν
Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these.29λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδὲ Σολομὼν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ περιεβάλετο ὡς ἓν τούτων
If that's how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won't he do much more for you--you of little faith?30εἰ δὲ τὸν χόρτον τοῦ ἀγροῦ σήμερον ὄντα καὶ αὔριον εἰς κλίβανον βαλλόμενον Θεὸς οὕτως ἀμφιέννυσιν οὐ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ὑμᾶς ὀλιγόπιστοι
So don't worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?'31Μὴ οὖν μεριμνήσητε λέγοντες Τί φάγωμεν Τί πίωμεν Τί περιβαλώμεθα
For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.32πάντα γὰρ ταῦτα τὰ ἔθνη ἐπιζητοῦσιν οἶδεν γὰρ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος ὅτι χρῄζετε τούτων ἁπάντων
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.33ζητεῖτε δὲ πρῶτον τὴν βασιλείαν [τοῦ θεοῦ] καὶ τὴν δικαιοσύνην αὐτοῦ καὶ ταῦτα πάντα προστεθήσεται ὑμῖν
Therefore don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.34Μὴ οὖν μεριμνήσητε εἰς τὴν αὔριον γὰρ αὔριον μεριμνήσει ἑαυτῆς ἀρκετὸν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ κακία αὐτῆς
