At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,1Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἤκουσεν Ἡρῴδης τετραάρχης τὴν ἀκοὴν Ἰησοῦ
And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.2καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ Οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰωάννης Βαπτιστής αὐτὸς ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ διὰ τοῦτο αἱ δυνάμεις ἐνεργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτῷ
For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.3 γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάνην ἔδησεν ‹αὐτὸν› καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ ἀπέθετο διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ
For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.4ἔλεγεν γὰρ «ὁ Ἰωάννης» αὐτῷ Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν αὐτήν
And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.5καὶ θέλων αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι ἐφοβήθη τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ὡς προφήτην αὐτὸν εἶχον
But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.6Γενεσίοις δὲ γενομένοις τοῦ Ἡρῴδου ὠρχήσατο θυγάτηρ τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος ἐν τῷ μέσῳ καὶ ἤρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ
Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.7ὅθεν μεθ’ ὅρκου ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ δοῦναι ἐὰν αἰτήσηται
And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.8 δὲ προβιβασθεῖσα ὑπὸ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς Δός μοι φησίν Ὧδε ἐπὶ πίνακι τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ
And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.9Καὶ λυπηθεὶς βασιλεὺς διὰ τοὺς ὅρκους καὶ τοὺς συνανακειμένους ἐκέλευσεν δοθῆναι
And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.10καὶ πέμψας ἀπεκεφάλισεν ‹τὸν› Ἰωάννην ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.11Καὶ ἠνέχθη κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἐδόθη τῷ κορασίῳ καὶ ἤνεγκεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς
And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.12καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦραν τὸ πτῶμα καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτόν καὶ ἐλθόντες ἀπήγγειλαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.13Ἀκούσας δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν ἐν πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατ’ ἰδίαν καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ πεζῇ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων
And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.14Καὶ ἐξελθὼν εἶδεν πολὺν ὄχλον καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν τοὺς ἀρρώστους αὐτῶν
And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.15Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Ἔρημός ἐστιν τόπος καὶ ὥρα ἤδη παρῆλθεν ἀπόλυσον 〈οὖν〉 τοὺς ὄχλους ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὰς κώμας ἀγοράσωσιν ἑαυτοῖς βρώματα
But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.16 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν ἀπελθεῖν δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν
And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.17Οἱ δὲ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Οὐκ ἔχομεν ὧδε εἰ μὴ πέντε ἄρτους καὶ δύο ἰχθύας
He said, Bring them hither to me.18 δὲ εἶπεν Φέρετέ μοι ὧδε αὐτούς
And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.19καὶ κελεύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνακλιθῆναι ἐπὶ τοῦ χόρτου λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησεν καὶ κλάσας ἔδωκεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς τοὺς ἄρτους οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις
And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.20Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν καὶ ἦραν τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων δώδεκα κοφίνους πλήρεις
And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.21οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν ἄνδρες ὡσεὶ πεντακισχίλιοι χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων
And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.22Καὶ εὐθέως ἠνάγκασεν τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν ἕως οὗ ἀπολύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους
And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.23καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος κατ’ ἰδίαν προσεύξασθαι ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης μόνος ἦν ἐκεῖ
But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.24τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη σταδίους πολλοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀπεῖχεν βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ἄνεμος
And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.25Τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.26οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπατοῦντα ἐταράχθησαν λέγοντες ὅτι Φάντασμά ἐστιν καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἔκραξαν
But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.27Εὐθὺς δὲ ἐλάλησεν «ὁ Ἰησοῦς» αὐτοῖς λέγων Θαρσεῖτε ἐγώ εἰμι μὴ φοβεῖσθε
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.28Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ αὐτῷ Πέτρος εἶπεν Κύριε εἰ σὺ εἶ κέλευσόν με ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σὲ ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα
And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.29 δὲ εἶπεν Ἐλθέ Καὶ καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου [ὁ] Πέτρος περιεπάτησεν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.30βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ‹ἰσχυρὸν› ἐφοβήθη καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι ἔκραξεν λέγων Κύριε σῶσόν με
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?31Εὐθέως δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὀλιγόπιστε εἰς τί ἐδίστασας
And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.32Καὶ ἀναβάντων αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἐκόπασεν ἄνεμος
Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.33οἱ δὲ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ Υἱὸς εἶ
And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.34Καὶ διαπεράσαντες ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν εἰς Γεννησαρέτ
And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;35καὶ ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου ἀπέστειλαν εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον ἐκείνην καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας
And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.36καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μόνον ἅψωνται τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ καὶ ὅσοι ἥψαντο διεσώθησαν
