Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.1Προσέχετε δὲ τὴν δικαιοσύνην ὑμῶν μὴ ποιεῖν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι αὐτοῖς εἰ δὲ μή¦γε μισθὸν οὐκ ἔχετε παρὰ τῷ Πατρὶ ὑμῶν τῷ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.2Ὅταν οὖν ποιῇς ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ σαλπίσῃς ἔμπροσθέν σου ὥσπερ οἱ ὑποκριταὶ ποιοῦσιν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ ἐν ταῖς ῥύμαις ὅπως δοξασθῶσιν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν
But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:3σοῦ δὲ ποιοῦντος ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ γνώτω ἀριστερά σου τί ποιεῖ δεξιά σου
That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.4ὅπως σου ἐλεημοσύνη ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ καὶ Πατήρ σου βλέπων ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ ἀποδώσει σοι
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.5Καὶ ὅταν προσεύχησθε οὐκ ἔσεσθε ὡς οἱ ὑποκριταί ὅτι φιλοῦσιν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ ἐν ταῖς γωνίαις τῶν πλατειῶν ἑστῶτες προσεύχεσθαι ὅπως φανῶσιν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.6σὺ δὲ ὅταν προσεύχῃ εἴσελθε εἰς τὸ ταμεῖόν σου καὶ κλείσας τὴν θύραν σου πρόσευξαι τῷ Πατρί σου τῷ ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ καὶ Πατήρ σου βλέπων ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ ἀποδώσει σοι
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.7Προσευχόμενοι δὲ μὴ βατταλογήσητε ὥσπερ οἱ ἐθνικοί δοκοῦσιν γὰρ ὅτι ἐν τῇ πολυλογίᾳ αὐτῶν εἰσακουσθήσονται
Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.8μὴ οὖν ὁμοιωθῆτε αὐτοῖς οἶδεν γὰρ (ὁ θεὸς) Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὧν χρείαν ἔχετε πρὸ τοῦ ὑμᾶς αἰτῆσαι αὐτόν
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.9Οὕτως οὖν προσεύχεσθε ὑμεῖς Πάτερ ἡμῶν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς Ἁγιασθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σου
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.10Ἐλθέτω* βασιλεία σου Γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου Ὡς ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς
Give us this day our daily bread.11Τὸν ἄρτον ἡμῶν τὸν ἐπιούσιον δὸς ἡμῖν σήμερον
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.12Καὶ ἄφες ἡμῖν τὰ ὀφειλήματα ἡμῶν Ὡς καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀφήκαμεν τοῖς ὀφειλέταις ἡμῶν
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:14Ἐὰν γὰρ ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν ἀφήσει καὶ ὑμῖν Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.15ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις (τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν) οὐδὲ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἀφήσει τὰ παραπτώματα ὑμῶν
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.16Ὅταν δὲ νηστεύητε μὴ γίνεσθε ὡς οἱ ὑποκριταὶ σκυθρωποί ἀφανίζουσιν γὰρ τὰ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν ὅπως φανῶσιν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις νηστεύοντες ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν
But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;17σὺ δὲ νηστεύων ἄλειψαί σου τὴν κεφαλὴν καὶ τὸ πρόσωπόν σου νίψαι
That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.18ὅπως μὴ φανῇς τοῖς ἀνθρώποις νηστεύων ἀλλὰ τῷ Πατρί σου τῷ ἐν τῷ κρυφαίῳ καὶ Πατήρ σου βλέπων ἐν τῷ κρυφαίῳ ἀποδώσει σοι
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:19Μὴ θησαυρίζετε ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὅπου σὴς καὶ βρῶσις ἀφανίζει καὶ ὅπου κλέπται διορύσσουσιν καὶ κλέπτουσιν
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:20θησαυρίζετε δὲ ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐν οὐρανῷ ὅπου οὔτε σὴς οὔτε βρῶσις ἀφανίζει καὶ ὅπου κλέπται οὐ διορύσσουσιν οὐδὲ κλέπτουσιν
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.21ὅπου γάρ ἐστιν θησαυρός σου ἐκεῖ ἔσται καὶ καρδία σου
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.22 λύχνος τοῦ σώματός ἐστιν ὀφθαλμός ἐὰν οὖν ὀφθαλμός σου ἁπλοῦς ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου φωτεινὸν ἔσται
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!23ἐὰν δὲ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρὸς ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου σκοτεινὸν ἔσται εἰ οὖν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἐν σοὶ σκότος ἐστίν τὸ σκότος πόσον
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?25Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε τί πίητε μηδὲ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε οὐχὶ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?26ἐμβλέψατε εἰς τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ὅτι οὐ σπείρουσιν οὐδὲ θερίζουσιν οὐδὲ συνάγουσιν εἰς ἀποθήκας καὶ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος τρέφει αὐτά οὐχ ὑμεῖς μᾶλλον διαφέρετε αὐτῶν
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?27τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται προσθεῖναι ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ πῆχυν ἕνα
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:28Καὶ περὶ ἐνδύματος τί μεριμνᾶτε καταμάθετε τὰ κρίνα τοῦ ἀγροῦ πῶς αὐξάνουσιν οὐ κοπιῶσιν οὐδὲ νήθουσιν
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.29λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδὲ Σολομὼν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ περιεβάλετο ὡς ἓν τούτων
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?30εἰ δὲ τὸν χόρτον τοῦ ἀγροῦ σήμερον ὄντα καὶ αὔριον εἰς κλίβανον βαλλόμενον Θεὸς οὕτως ἀμφιέννυσιν οὐ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ὑμᾶς ὀλιγόπιστοι
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?31Μὴ οὖν μεριμνήσητε λέγοντες Τί φάγωμεν Τί πίωμεν Τί περιβαλώμεθα
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.32πάντα γὰρ ταῦτα τὰ ἔθνη ἐπιζητοῦσιν οἶδεν γὰρ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος ὅτι χρῄζετε τούτων ἁπάντων
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.33ζητεῖτε δὲ πρῶτον τὴν βασιλείαν [τοῦ θεοῦ] καὶ τὴν δικαιοσύνην αὐτοῦ καὶ ταῦτα πάντα προστεθήσεται ὑμῖν
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.34Μὴ οὖν μεριμνήσητε εἰς τὴν αὔριον γὰρ αὔριον μεριμνήσει ἑαυτῆς ἀρκετὸν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ κακία αὐτῆς
