1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard reports about Jesus,

1Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἤκουσεν Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετραάρχης τὴν ἀκοὴν Ἰησοῦ

2and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead! And because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him."

2καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ Οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰωάννης ὁ Βαπτιστής αὐτὸς ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ διὰ τοῦτο αἱ δυνάμεις ἐνεργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτῷ

3For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,

3Ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάνην ἔδησεν ‹αὐτὸν› καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ ἀπέθετο διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ

4because John had repeatedly told him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."

4ἔλεγεν γὰρ «ὁ Ἰωάννης» αὐτῷ Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν αὐτήν

5Although Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd because they accepted John as a prophet.

5καὶ θέλων αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι ἐφοβήθη τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ὡς προφήτην αὐτὸν εἶχον

6But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,

6Γενεσίοις δὲ γενομένοις τοῦ Ἡρῴδου ὠρχήσατο ἡ θυγάτηρ τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος ἐν τῷ μέσῳ καὶ ἤρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ

7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.

7ὅθεν μεθ’ ὅρκου ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ δοῦναι ὃ ἐὰν αἰτήσηται

8Instructed by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter."

8Ἡ δὲ προβιβασθεῖσα ὑπὸ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς Δός μοι φησίν Ὧδε ἐπὶ πίνακι τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ

9Although it grieved the king, because of his oath and the dinner guests he commanded it to be given.

9Καὶ λυπηθεὶς ὁ βασιλεὺς διὰ τοὺς ὅρκους καὶ τοὺς συνανακειμένους ἐκέλευσεν δοθῆναι

10So he sent and had John beheaded in the prison.

10καὶ πέμψας ἀπεκεφάλισεν ‹τὸν› Ἰωάννην ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ

11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

11Καὶ ἠνέχθη ἡ κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἐδόθη τῷ κορασίῳ καὶ ἤνεγκεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς

12Then John's disciples came and took the body and buried it and went and told Jesus.

12καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦραν τὸ πτῶμα καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτόν καὶ ἐλθόντες ἀπήγγειλαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ

13Now when Jesus heard this he went away from there privately in a boat to an isolated place. But when the crowd heard about it, they followed him on foot from the towns.

13Ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν ἐν πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατ’ ἰδίαν καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ πεζῇ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων

14As he got out he saw the large crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

14Καὶ ἐξελθὼν εἶδεν πολὺν ὄχλον καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν τοὺς ἀρρώστους αὐτῶν

15When evening arrived, his disciples came to him saying, "This is an isolated place and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."

15Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Ἔρημός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος καὶ ἡ ὥρα ἤδη παρῆλθεν ἀπόλυσον 〈οὖν〉 τοὺς ὄχλους ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὰς κώμας ἀγοράσωσιν ἑαυτοῖς βρώματα

16But he replied, "They don't need to go. You give them something to eat."

16Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν ἀπελθεῖν δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν

17They said to him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish."

17Οἱ δὲ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Οὐκ ἔχομεν ὧδε εἰ μὴ πέντε ἄρτους καὶ δύο ἰχθύας

18"Bring them here to me," he replied.

18Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Φέρετέ μοι ὧδε αὐτούς

19Then he instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.

19καὶ κελεύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνακλιθῆναι ἐπὶ τοῦ χόρτου λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησεν καὶ κλάσας ἔδωκεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς τοὺς ἄρτους οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις

20They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, twelve baskets full.

20Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν καὶ ἦραν τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων δώδεκα κοφίνους πλήρεις

21Not counting women and children, there were about five thousand men who ate.

21οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν ἄνδρες ὡσεὶ πεντακισχίλιοι χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dispersed the crowds.

22Καὶ εὐθέως ἠνάγκασεν τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν ἕως οὗ ἀπολύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους

23And after he sent the crowds away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.

23καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος κατ’ ἰδίαν προσεύξασθαι ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης μόνος ἦν ἐκεῖ

24Meanwhile the boat, already far from land, was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it.

24τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη σταδίους πολλοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀπεῖχεν βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος

25As the night was ending, Jesus came to them walking on the sea.

25Τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν

26When the disciples saw him walking on the water they were terrified and said, "It's a ghost!" and cried out with fear.

26οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπατοῦντα ἐταράχθησαν λέγοντες ὅτι Φάντασμά ἐστιν καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἔκραξαν

27But immediately Jesus spoke to them: "Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid."

27Εὐθὺς δὲ ἐλάλησεν «ὁ Ἰησοῦς» αὐτοῖς λέγων Θαρσεῖτε ἐγώ εἰμι μὴ φοβεῖσθε

28Peter said to him, "Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water."

28Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν Κύριε εἰ σὺ εἶ κέλευσόν με ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σὲ ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα

29So he said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.

29Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ἐλθέ Καὶ καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου [ὁ] Πέτρος περιεπάτησεν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν

30But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"

30βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ‹ἰσχυρὸν› ἐφοβήθη καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι ἔκραξεν λέγων Κύριε σῶσόν με

31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"

31Εὐθέως δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὀλιγόπιστε εἰς τί ἐδίστασας

32When they went up into the boat, the wind ceased.

32Καὶ ἀναβάντων αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος

33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

33οἱ δὲ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ Υἱὸς εἶ

34After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.

34Καὶ διαπεράσαντες ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν εἰς Γεννησαρέτ

35When the people there recognized him, they sent word into all the surrounding area, and they brought all their sick to him.

35καὶ ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου ἀπέστειλαν εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον ἐκείνην καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας

36They begged him if they could only touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

36καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μόνον ἅψωνται τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ καὶ ὅσοι ἥψαντο διεσώθησαν
