1Then Pharisees and experts in the law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said,

1Τότε προσέρχονται τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων Φαρισαῖοι καὶ γραμματεῖς λέγοντες

2"Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat."

2Διὰ τί οἱ μαθηταί σου παραβαίνουσιν τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων οὐ γὰρ νίπτονται τὰς χεῖρας ‹αὐτῶν› ὅταν ἄρτον ἐσθίωσιν

3He answered them, "And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?

3Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Διὰ τί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν

4For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.'

4ὁ γὰρ Θεὸς εἶπεν Τίμα τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καί Ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω

5But you say, 'If someone tells his father or mother, "Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God,"

5ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε Ὃς ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί Δῶρον ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς

6he does not need to honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition.

6οὐ μὴ τιμήσει τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ 〈ἢ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ〉 καὶ ἠκυρώσατε τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν

7Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said,

7ὑποκριταί καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν περὶ ὑμῶν Ἠσαΐας λέγων

8This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me,

8Ὁ λαὸς οὗτος τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ Ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ

9and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'"

9Μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με Διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων

10Then he called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand.

10Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν ὄχλον εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀκούετε καὶ συνίετε

11What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person."

11οὐ τὸ εἰσερχόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἀλλὰ τὸ ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκ τοῦ στόματος τοῦτο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον

12Then the disciples came to him and said, "Do you know that when the Pharisees heard this saying they were offended?"

12Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν

13And he replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.

13Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Πᾶσα φυτεία ἣν οὐκ ἐφύτευσεν ὁ Πατήρ μου ὁ οὐράνιος ἐκριζωθήσεται

14Leave them! They are blind guides. If someone who is blind leads another who is blind, both will fall into a pit."

14ἄφετε αὐτούς τυφλοί εἰσιν ὁδηγοί τυφλῶν τυφλὸς δὲ τυφλὸν ἐὰν ὁδηγῇ ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον πεσοῦνται

15But Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us."

15Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ Φράσον ἡμῖν τὴν παραβολήν ‹ταύτην›

16Jesus said, "Even after all this, are you still so foolish?

16Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε

17Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer?

17οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται

18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person.

18τὰ δὲ ἐκπορευόμενα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχεται κἀκεῖνα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον

19For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

19ἐκ γὰρ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται διαλογισμοὶ πονηροί φόνοι μοιχεῖαι πορνεῖαι κλοπαί ψευδομαρτυρίαι βλασφημίαι

20These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person."

20ταῦτά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸ δὲ ἀνίπτοις χερσὶν φαγεῖν οὐ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον

21After going out from there, Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

21Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος

22A Canaanite woman from that area came and cried out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is horribly demon-possessed!"

22καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ Χαναναία ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων ἐκείνων ἐξελθοῦσα ἔκραζεν λέγουσα Ἐλέησόν με Κύριε υἱὸς Δαυίδ ἡ θυγάτηρ μου κακῶς δαιμονίζεται

23But he did not answer her a word. Then his disciples came and begged him, "Send her away, because she keeps on crying out after us."

23Ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῇ λόγον καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἠρώτουν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Ἀπόλυσον αὐτήν ὅτι κράζει ὄπισθεν ἡμῶν

24So he answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

24Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Οὐκ ἀπεστάλην εἰ μὴ εἰς τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἀπολωλότα οἴκου Ἰσραήλ

25But she came and bowed down before him and said, "Lord, help me!"

25Ἡ δὲ ἐλθοῦσα προσεκύνει αὐτῷ λέγουσα Κύριε βοήθει μοι

26"It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs," he said.

26Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Οὐκ ἔστιν καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ βαλεῖν τοῖς κυναρίοις

27"Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."

27Ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Ναί κύριε καὶ γὰρ τὰ κυνάρια ἐσθίει ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν πιπτόντων ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης τῶν κυρίων αὐτῶν

28Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, your faith is great! Let what you want be done for you." And her daughter was healed from that hour.

28Τότε ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῇ Ὦ γύναι μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις καὶ ἰάθη ἡ θυγάτηρ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης

29When he left there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain, where he sat down.

29Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἀναβὰς εἰς τὸ ὄρος ἐκάθητο ἐκεῖ

30Then large crowds came to him bringing with them the lame, blind, crippled, mute, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he healed them.

30καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ ὄχλοι πολλοὶ ἔχοντες μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν χωλούς κυλλούς τυφλούς κωφούς καὶ ἑτέρους πολλούς καὶ ἔρριψαν* αὐτοὺς παρὰ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτούς

31As a result, the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they praised the God of Israel.

31ὥστε τὸν ὄχλον θαυμάσαι βλέποντας κωφοὺς λαλοῦντας κυλλοὺς ὑγιεῖς καὶ χωλοὺς περιπατοῦντας καὶ τυφλοὺς βλέποντας καὶ ἐδόξασαν τὸν Θεὸν Ἰσραήλ

32Then Jesus called the disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already been here with me three days and they have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry since they may faint on the way."

32Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ εἶπεν Σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ἤδη ἡμέραι τρεῖς προσμένουσίν μοι καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν τί φάγωσιν καὶ ἀπολῦσαι αὐτοὺς νήστεις οὐ θέλω μή‿ ποτε ἐκλυθῶσιν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ

33The disciples said to him, "Where can we get enough bread in this desolate place to satisfy so great a crowd?"

33Καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί Πόθεν ἡμῖν ἐν ἐρημίᾳ ἄρτοι τοσοῦτοι ὥστε χορτάσαι ὄχλον τοσοῦτον

34Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They replied, "Seven--and a few small fish."

34Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Πόσους ἄρτους ἔχετε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ἑπτά καὶ ὀλίγα ἰχθύδια

35After instructing the crowd to sit down on the ground,

35Καὶ παραγγείλας τῷ ὄχλῳ ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν

36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, he broke them and began giving them to the disciples, who then gave them to the crowds.

36ἔλαβεν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς ἰχθύας καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις

37They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.

37Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν καὶ τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων ἦραν ἑπτὰ σπυρίδας πλήρεις

38Not counting children and women, there were four thousand men who ate.

38οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν τετρακισχίλιοι ἄνδρες χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων

39After sending away the crowd, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.

39Καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἐνέβη εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰ ὅρια Μαγαδάν
