1 “ Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense before you. “Brothers and fathers, hear the defense that I now make before you.” Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence <i>which I make</i> now unto you. “Brothers and fathers, hear my defense <i>which I</i> now <i>offer</i> to you.” “Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense.”
2 When they heard him speak to them in Hebrew, they became even more silent. Then Paul declared, And when they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew language, they became even more quiet. And he said: (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,) And when they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew dialect, they became <i>even</i> more quiet; and he said, When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet. Then Paul said:
3 “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but raised in this city. I was educated at the feet of Gamaliel in strict conformity to the law of our fathers. I am just as zealous for God as any of you here today. “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as all of you are this day. I am verily a man <i>which am</i> a Jew, born in Tarsus, <i>a city</i> in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, <i>and</i> taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day. “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated under Gamaliel, strictly according to the Law of our fathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today. “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today.
4 I persecuted this Way even to the death, detaining both men and women and throwing them into prison, I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women, And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women. 5 as the high priest and the whole Council can testify about me. I even obtained letters from them to their brothers in Damascus, and I was on my way to apprehend these people and bring them to Jerusalem to be punished. as the high priest and the whole council of elders can bear me witness. From them I received letters to the brothers, and I journeyed toward Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished. As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished. as also the high priest and all the Council of the elders can testify. From them I also received letters to the brothers, and started off for Damascus in order to bring even those who were there to Jerusalem as prisoners to be punished. as the high priest and all the Council can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.
6 About noon as I was approaching Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. “As I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. “But it happened that as I was on my way, approaching Damascus at about noon, a very bright light suddenly flashed from heaven all around me, “About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me.
7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me? And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’ I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?’
8 ‘Who are You, Lord? I asked. ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting, He replied. And I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’ And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. And I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.’ “’Who are you, Lord?’ I asked. “’I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,’ he replied.
9 My companions saw the light, but they could not understand the voice of the One speaking to me. Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me. And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. And those who were with me saw the light, but did not understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me. My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me.
10 Then I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord? ‘Get up and go into Damascus, He told me. ‘There you will be told all that you have been appointed to do. And I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Rise, and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.’ And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. And I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Get up and go on into Damascus, and there you will be told about everything that has been appointed for you to do.’ “’What shall I do, Lord?’ I asked. “ ‘Get up,’ the Lord said, ‘and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.’
11 Because the brilliance of the light had blinded me, my companions led me by the hand into Damascus. And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and came into Damascus. And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus. But since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I came into Damascus being led by the hand by those who were with me. My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me.
12 There a man named Ananias, a devout observer of the law who was highly regarded by all the Jews living there, “And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt <i>there</i>, “Now a certain Ananias, a man who was devout by the standard of the Law <i>and</i> well spoken of by all the Jews who lived <i>there,</i> “A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there.
13 came and stood beside me. ‘Brother Saul, he said, ‘receive your sight. And at that moment I could see him. came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that very hour I received my sight and saw him. Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him. came to me, and standing nearby he said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I looked up at him. He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him.
14 Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear His voice. And he said, ‘The God of our fathers appointed you to know his will, to see the Righteous One and to hear a voice from his mouth; And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth. And he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear a message from His mouth. “Then he said: ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth.
15 You will be His witness to everyone of what you have seen and heard. for you will be a witness for him to everyone of what you have seen and heard. For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard. For you will be a witness for Him to all people of what you have seen and heard. You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard.
16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized, and wash your sins away, calling on His name. And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’ And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins by calling on His name.’ And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’

18 and saw the Lord saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem quickly, because the people here will not accept your testimony about Me. and saw him saying to me, ‘Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.’ And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. and I saw Him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about Me.’ and saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.’
19 ‘Lord, I answered, ‘ they know very well that in one synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in You. And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you. And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee: And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed in You. “’Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you.
20 And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and watching over the garments of those who killed him. And when the blood of Stephen your witness was being shed, I myself was standing by and approving and watching over the garments of those who killed him.’ And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him. And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was being shed, I also was standing nearby and approving, and watching over the cloaks of those who were killing him.’ And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’
21 Then He said to me, ‘Go! I will send you far away to the Gentiles. And he said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’” And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. And He said to me, ‘Go! For I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’” “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”
22 The crowd listened to Paul until he made this statement. Then they lifted up their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him! He is not fit to live! Up to this word they listened to him. Then they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he should not be allowed to live.” And they gave him audience unto this word, and <i>then</i> lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a <i>fellow</i> from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live. They listened to him up to this statement, and <i>then</i> they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a man from the earth, for he should not be allowed to live!” The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him! He’s not fit to live!”

24 the commander ordered that Paul be brought into the barracks. He directed that Paul be flogged and interrogated to determine the reason for this outcry against him. the tribune ordered him to be brought into the barracks, saying that he should be examined by flogging, to find out why they were shouting against him like this. The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him. the commander ordered that he be brought into the barracks, saying that he was to be interrogated by flogging so that he would find out the reason why they were shouting against him that way. the commander ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and interrogated in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this.
25 But as they stretched him out to strap him down, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “ Is it lawful for you to flog a Roman citizen without a trial? But when they had stretched him out for the whips, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?” And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned? But when they stretched him out with straps, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman and uncondemned?” As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?”
26 On hearing this, the centurion went and reported it to the commander. “What are you going to do? he said. “ This man is a Roman citizen. When the centurion heard this, he went to the tribune and said to him, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.” When the centurion heard <i>that</i>, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman. When the centurion heard <i>this,</i> he went to the commander and told <i>him,</i> saying, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman.” When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. “What are you going to do?” he asked. “This man is a Roman citizen.”
27 The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen? “Yes, he answered. So the tribune came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” And he said, “Yes.” Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea. The commander came and said to Paul, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” And he said, “Yes.” The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes, I am,” he answered.
28 “I paid a high price for my citizenship, said the commander. “But I was born a citizen, Paul replied. The tribune answered, “I bought this citizenship for a large sum.” Paul said, “But I am a citizen by birth.” And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was <i>free</i> born. The commander answered, “I acquired this citizenship for a large sum of money.” And Paul said, “But I was actually born <i>a citizen.</i>” Then the commander said, “I had to pay a lot of money for my citizenship.” “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.
29 Then those who were about to interrogate Paul stepped back, and the commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put a Roman citizen in chains. So those who were about to examine him withdrew from him immediately, and the tribune also was afraid, for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had bound him. Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him. Therefore, those who were about to interrogate him immediately backed away from him; and the commander also was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had put him in chains. Those who were about to interrogate him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.
30 The next day the commander, wanting to learn the real reason Paul was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul down and had him stand before them. But on the next day, desiring to know the real reason why he was being accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them. On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from <i>his</i> bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them. Now on the next day, wanting to know for certain why <i>Paul</i> had been accused by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the Council to assemble, and he brought Paul down and placed him before them. The commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews. So the next day he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the members of the Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul and had him stand before them.
