1The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him.1Καὶ συνάγονται πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καί τινες τῶν γραμματέων ἐλθόντες ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων
2They observed that some of his disciples were eating bread with unclean--that is, unwashed--hands.2καὶ ἰδόντες τινὰς τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ὅτι κοιναῖς χερσίν τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ἀνίπτοις ἐσθίουσιν τοὺς ἄρτους
3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, keeping the tradition of the elders.3Οἱ γὰρ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐὰν μὴ πυγμῇ νίψωνται τὰς χεῖρας οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν κρατοῦντες τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων
4When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they have washed. And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and dining couches.)4καὶ ἀπ’ ἀγορᾶς ἐὰν μὴ βαπτίσωνται* οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν καὶ ἄλλα πολλά ἐστιν παρέλαβον κρατεῖν βαπτισμοὺς ποτηρίων καὶ ξεστῶν καὶ χαλκίων ‹καὶ κλινῶν›
5So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ceremonially unclean hands?"5Καὶ ἐπερωτῶσιν αὐτὸν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς Διὰ τί οὐ περιπατοῦσιν οἱ μαθηταί σου κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων ἀλλὰ κοιναῖς χερσὶν ἐσθίουσιν τὸν ἄρτον
6He answered them, "Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.6 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν Ἠσαΐας περὶ ὑμῶν τῶν ὑποκριτῶν ὡς γέγραπται ὅτι Οὗτος λαὸς τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ
7They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines human commands.7Μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με Διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων
8Abandoning the command of God, you hold on to human tradition."8Ἀφέντες τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ κρατεῖτε τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ⧼βαπτισμοὺς ξεστῶν καὶ ποτηρίων καὶ ἄλλα παρόμοια τοιαῦτα πολλὰ ποιεῖτε⧽
9He also said to them, "You have a fine way of invalidating God's command in order to set up your tradition!9Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Καλῶς ἀθετεῖτε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἵνα τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν τηρήσητε
10For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother; and Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.10Μωϋσῆς γὰρ εἶπεν Τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου καί κακολογῶν πατέρα μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω
11But you say, 'If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is corban '" (that is, an offering devoted to God),11ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε Ἐὰν εἴπῃ ἄνθρωπος τῷ πατρὶ τῇ μητρί Κορβᾶν ἐστιν Δῶρον ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς
12"you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.12οὐκέτι ἀφίετε αὐτὸν οὐδὲν ποιῆσαι τῷ πατρὶ τῇ μητρί
13You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other similar things."13ἀκυροῦντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ τῇ παραδόσει ὑμῶν παρεδώκατε καὶ παρόμοια τοιαῦτα πολλὰ ποιεῖτε
14Summoning the crowd again, he told them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand:14Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος πάλιν τὸν ὄχλον ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ἀκούσατέ μου πάντες καὶ σύνετε
15Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him but the things that come out of a person are what defile him."15οὐδέν ἐστιν ἔξωθεν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς αὐτὸν δύναται κοινῶσαι αὐτόν ἀλλὰ τὰ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον
1616⧼Εἴ τις ἔχει ὦτα ἀκούειν ἀκουέτω⧽
17When he went into the house away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable.17Καὶ ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς οἶκον ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν παραβολήν
18He said to them, "Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don't you realize that nothing going into a person from the outside can defile him?18Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ ἔξωθεν εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸν ἄνθρωπον οὐ δύναται αὐτὸν κοινῶσαι
19For it doesn't go into his heart but into the stomach and is eliminated" (thus he declared all foods clean).19ὅτι οὐκ εἰσπορεύεται αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν καρδίαν ἀλλ’ εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν καὶ εἰς τὸν ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκπορεύεται καθαρίζων πάντα τὰ βρώματα
20And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him.20Ἔλεγεν δὲ ὅτι Τὸ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκεῖνο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον
21For from within, out of people's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders,21ἔσωθεν γὰρ ἐκ τῆς καρδίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων οἱ διαλογισμοὶ οἱ κακοὶ ἐκπορεύονται πορνεῖαι κλοπαί φόνοι μοιχεῖαι
22adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, self-indulgence, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.22πλεονεξίαι πονηρίαι δόλος ἀσέλγεια ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός βλασφημία ὑπερηφανία ἀφροσύνη
23All these evil things come from within and defile a person."23πάντα ταῦτα τὰ πονηρὰ ἔσωθεν ἐκπορεύεται καὶ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον
24He got up and departed from there to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but he could not escape notice.24Ἐκεῖθεν δὲ ἀναστὰς ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὰ ὅρια Τύρου (καὶ Σιδῶνος) Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς οἰκίαν οὐδένα ἤθελεν γνῶναι καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθη* λαθεῖν
25Instead, immediately after hearing about him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit came and fell at his feet.25ἀλλ’ εὐθὺς ἀκούσασα γυνὴ περὶ αὐτοῦ ἧς εἶχεν τὸ θυγάτριον αὐτῆς πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον ἐλθοῦσα προσέπεσεν πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ
26The woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth, and she was asking him to cast the demon out of her daughter.26 δὲ γυνὴ ἦν Ἑλληνίς Συροφοινίκισσα τῷ γένει καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτὸν ἵνα τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐκβάλῃ ἐκ τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτῆς
27He said to her, "Let the children be fed first, because it isn't right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."27Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτῇ Ἄφες πρῶτον χορτασθῆναι τὰ τέκνα οὐ γάρ ἐστιν καλόν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ τοῖς κυναρίοις βαλεῖν
28But she replied to him, "Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."28 δὲ ἀπεκρίθη καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ 〈Ναί〉 Κύριε καὶ τὰ κυνάρια ὑποκάτω τῆς τραπέζης ἐσθίουσιν ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν παιδίων
29Then he told her, "Because of this reply, you may go. The demon has left your daughter."29Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Διὰ τοῦτον τὸν λόγον ὕπαγε ἐξελήλυθεν ἐκ τῆς θυγατρός σου τὸ δαιμόνιον
30When she went back to her home, she found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.30καὶ ἀπελθοῦσα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς εὗρεν τὸ παιδίον βεβλημένον ἐπὶ τὴν κλίνην καὶ τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐξεληλυθός
31Again, leaving the region of Tyre, he went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the region of the Decapolis.31Καὶ πάλιν ἐξελθὼν ἐκ τῶν ὁρίων Τύρου ἦλθεν διὰ Σιδῶνος εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ὁρίων Δεκαπόλεως
32They brought to him a deaf man who had difficulty speaking and begged Jesus to lay his hand on him.32Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτῷ κωφὸν καὶ μογιλάλον καὶ παρακαλοῦσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιθῇ αὐτῷ τὴν χεῖρα
33So he took him away from the crowd in private. After putting his fingers in the man's ears and spitting, he touched his tongue.33Καὶ ἀπολαβόμενος αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου κατ’ ἰδίαν ἔβαλεν τοὺς δακτύλους αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰ ὦτα αὐτοῦ καὶ πτύσας ἥψατο τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ
34Looking up to heaven, he sighed deeply and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Be opened!" ).34καὶ ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐστέναξεν καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἐφφαθά ἐστιν Διανοίχθητι
35Immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was loosened, and he began to speak clearly.35καὶ «ἠνοίγησαν αὐτοῦ αἱ ἀκοαί καὶ» εὐθὺς ἐλύθη δεσμὸς τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλει ὀρθῶς
36He ordered them to tell no one, but the more he ordered them, the more they proclaimed it.36Καὶ διεστείλατο αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδενὶ λέγωσιν ὅσον δὲ αὐτοῖς διεστέλλετο αὐτοὶ μᾶλλον περισσότερον ἐκήρυσσον
37They were extremely astonished and said, "He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."37καὶ ὑπερπερισσῶς ἐξεπλήσσοντο λέγοντες Καλῶς πάντα πεποίηκεν καὶ τοὺς κωφοὺς ποιεῖ ἀκούειν καὶ [τοὺς] ἀλάλους λαλεῖν
