In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God.1Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν Λόγος καὶ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν καὶ Θεὸς ἦν Λόγος
The Word was with God in the beginning.2Οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν
All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.3πάντα δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἕν γέγονεν
In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind.4ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν καὶ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων
And the light shines on in the darkness, but the darkness has not mastered it. 5καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει καὶ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν
A man came, sent from God, whose name was John.6Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ Θεοῦ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης
He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that everyone might believe through him.7οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός ἵνα πάντες πιστεύσωσιν δι’ αὐτοῦ
He himself was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.8οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς ἀλλ’ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός
The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.9Ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον
He was in the world, and the world was created by him, but the world did not recognize him.10ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἦν καὶ κόσμος δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ κόσμος αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω
He came to what was his own, but his own people did not receive him.11εἰς τὰ ἴδια ἦλθεν καὶ οἱ ἴδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον
But to all who have received him--those who believe in his name--he has given the right to become God's children12ὅσοι δὲ ἔλαβον αὐτόν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα Θεοῦ γενέσθαι τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ
--children not born by human parents or by human desire or a husband's decision, but by God. 13οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος σαρκὸς οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρὸς ἀλλ’ ἐκ Θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν
Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory--the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father.14Καὶ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ Πατρός πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας
John testified about him and shouted out, "This one was the one about whom I said, 'He who comes after me is greater than I am, because he existed before me.'"15Ἰωάννης μαρτυρεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ κέκραγεν λέγων Οὗτος ἦν ὃν εἶπον ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν
For we have all received from his fullness one gracious gift after another.16Ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος
For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ.17ὅτι νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο
No one has ever seen God. The only one, himself God, who is in closest fellowship with the Father, has made God known. 18Θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε μονογενὴς Θεὸς ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο
Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"19Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν μαρτυρία τοῦ Ἰωάννου ὅτε ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευίτας ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν αὐτόν Σὺ τίς εἶ
He confessed--he did not deny but confessed--"I am not the Christ!"20καὶ ὡμολόγησεν καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσατο καὶ ὡμολόγησεν ὅτι Ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ Χριστός
So they asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not!" "Are you the Prophet?"
Then they said to him, "Who are you? Tell us so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 22Εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ Τίς εἶ ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ
John said, "I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way for the Lord,' as Isaiah the prophet said."23Ἔφη Ἐγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Εὐθύνατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου καθὼς εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας προφήτης
(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)24Καὶ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων
So they asked John, "Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" 25καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τί οὖν βαπτίζεις εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ Χριστὸς οὐδὲ Ἠλίας οὐδὲ προφήτης
John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize,26Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰωάννης λέγων Ἐγὼ βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι μέσος ὑμῶν ἕστηκεν* ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε
who is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal!"27 ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ἄξιος ἵνα λύσω αὐτοῦ τὸν ἱμάντα τοῦ ὑποδήματος
These things happened in Bethany across the Jordan River where John was baptizing. 28Ταῦτα ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐγένετο πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου ὅπου ἦν Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων
On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!29Τῇ ἐπαύριον βλέπει τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ λέγει Ἴδε Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου
This is the one about whom I said, 'After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.'30οὗτός ἐστιν ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον Ὀπίσω μου ἔρχεται ἀνὴρ ὃς ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν
I did not recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he could be revealed to Israel." 31κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον ἐγὼ ἐν ὕδατι βαπτίζων
Then John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.32Καὶ ἐμαρτύρησεν Ἰωάννης λέγων ὅτι Τεθέαμαι τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον ὡς περιστερὰν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν
And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining--this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'33κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ πέμψας με βαπτίζειν ἐν ὕδατι ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν Ἐφ’ ὃν ἂν ἴδῃς τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον καὶ μένον ἐπ’ αὐτόν οὗτός ἐστιν βαπτίζων ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ
I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God." 34κἀγὼ ἑώρακα καὶ μεμαρτύρηκα ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
Again the next day John was standing there with two of his disciples.35Τῇ ἐπαύριον πάλιν εἱστήκει Ἰωάννης καὶ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ δύο
Gazing at Jesus as he walked by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"36καὶ ἐμβλέψας τῷ Ἰησοῦ περιπατοῦντι λέγει Ἴδε Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
When John's two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.37καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ δύο μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος καὶ ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
Jesus turned around and saw them following and said to them, "What do you want?" So they said to him, "Rabbi" (which is translated Teacher), "where are you staying?"38Στραφεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ζητεῖτε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ῥαββί λέγεται μεθερμηνευόμενον Διδάσκαλε Ποῦ μένεις
Jesus answered, "Come and you will see." So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about four o'clock in the afternoon.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed Jesus.40Ἦν Ἀνδρέας ἀδελφὸς Σίμωνος Πέτρου εἷς ἐκ τῶν δύο τῶν ἀκουσάντων παρὰ Ἰωάννου καὶ ἀκολουθησάντων αὐτῷ
He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah!"
Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter). 42ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐμβλέψας αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Σὺ εἶ Σίμων υἱὸς Ἰωάννου σὺ κληθήσῃ Κηφᾶς ἑρμηνεύεται Πέτρος
On the next day Jesus wanted to set out for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."43Τῇ ἐπαύριον ἠθέλησεν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν καὶ εὑρίσκει Φίλιππον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἀκολούθει μοι
(Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.)44ἦν δὲ Φίλιππος ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδά ἐκ τῆς πόλεως Ἀνδρέου καὶ Πέτρου
Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."45Εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὃν ἔγραψεν Μωϋσῆς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ οἱ προφῆται εὑρήκαμεν Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ
Nathanael replied, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip replied, "Come and see." 46Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ἐκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι Λέγει αὐτῷ Φίλιππος Ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed, "Look, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!"47Εἶδεν ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς τὸν Ναθαναὴλ ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει περὶ αὐτοῦ Ἴδε ἀληθῶς Ἰσραηλίτης ἐν δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν
Nathanael asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus replied, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."48Λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Πόθεν με γινώσκεις Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Πρὸ τοῦ σε Φίλιππον φωνῆσαι ὄντα ὑπὸ τὴν συκῆν εἶδόν σε
Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel!"49Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ῥαββί σὺ εἶ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ σὺ Βασιλεὺς εἶ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
Jesus said to him, "Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these."50Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ὅτι εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς πιστεύεις μείζω τούτων ὄψῃ
He continued, "I tell all of you the solemn truth--you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." 51καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὄψεσθε τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγότα καὶ τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
