Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying:1Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Ἰησοῦς πάλιν εἶπεν ἐν παραβολαῖς αὐτοῖς λέγων
"The kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son.2Ὡμοιώθη βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ βασιλεῖ ὅστις ἐποίησεν γάμους τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ
He sent his slaves to summon those who had been invited to the banquet, but they would not come.3καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ καλέσαι τοὺς κεκλημένους εἰς τοὺς γάμους καὶ οὐκ ἤθελον ἐλθεῖν
Again he sent other slaves, saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Look! The feast I have prepared for you is ready. My oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet."'4Πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους λέγων Εἴπατε τοῖς κεκλημένοις Ἰδοὺ τὸ ἄριστόν μου ἡτοίμακα οἱ ταῦροί μου καὶ τὰ σιτιστὰ τεθυμένα καὶ πάντα ἕτοιμα δεῦτε εἰς τοὺς γάμους
But they were indifferent and went away, one to his farm, another to his business.5Οἱ δὲ ἀμελήσαντες ἀπῆλθον ὃς μὲν εἰς τὸν ἴδιον ἀγρόν ὃς δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν ἐμπορίαν αὐτοῦ
The rest seized his slaves, insolently mistreated them, and killed them.6οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ κρατήσαντες τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὕβρισαν καὶ ἀπέκτειναν
The king was furious! He sent his soldiers, and they put those murderers to death and set their city on fire.7 δὲ βασιλεὺς ὠργίσθη καὶ πέμψας τὰ στρατεύματα αὐτοῦ ἀπώλεσεν τοὺς φονεῖς ἐκείνους καὶ τὴν πόλιν αὐτῶν ἐνέπρησεν
Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but the ones who had been invited were not worthy.8τότε λέγει τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ μὲν γάμος ἕτοιμός ἐστιν οἱ δὲ κεκλημένοι οὐκ ἦσαν ἄξιοι
So go into the main streets and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.'9πορεύεσθε οὖν ἐπὶ τὰς διεξόδους τῶν ὁδῶν καὶ ὅσους ἐὰν εὕρητε καλέσατε εἰς τοὺς γάμους
And those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all they found, both bad and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.10Καὶ ἐξελθόντες οἱ δοῦλοι ἐκεῖνοι εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς συνήγαγον πάντας οὓς εὗρον πονηρούς τε καὶ ἀγαθούς καὶ ἐπλήσθη γάμος* ἀνακειμένων
But when the king came in to see the wedding guests, he saw a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes.11Εἰσελθὼν δὲ βασιλεὺς θεάσασθαι τοὺς ἀνακειμένους εἶδεν ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἐνδεδυμένον ἔνδυμα γάμου
And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' But he had nothing to say.12καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἑταῖρε πῶς εἰσῆλθες ὧδε μὴ ἔχων ἔνδυμα γάμου δὲ ἐφιμώθη
Then the king said to his attendants, 'Tie him up hand and foot and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!'13Τότε βασιλεὺς εἶπεν τοῖς διακόνοις Δήσαντες αὐτοῦ πόδας καὶ χεῖρας ἐκβάλετε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον ἐκεῖ ἔσται κλαυθμὸς καὶ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων
For many are called, but few are chosen." 14Πολλοὶ γάρ εἰσιν κλητοὶ ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί
Then the Pharisees went out and planned together to entrap him with his own words.15Τότε πορευθέντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συμβούλιον ἔλαβον ὅπως αὐτὸν παγιδεύσωσιν ἐν λόγῳ
They sent to him their disciples along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You do not court anyone's favor because you show no partiality.16καὶ ἀποστέλλουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτῶν μετὰ τῶν Ἡρῳδιανῶν λέγοντες* Διδάσκαλε οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθὴς εἶ καὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ διδάσκεις καὶ οὐ μέλει σοι περὶ οὐδενός οὐ γὰρ βλέπεις εἰς πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπων
Tell us then, what do you think? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" 17εἰπὸν οὖν ἡμῖν τί σοι δοκεῖ ἔξεστιν δοῦναι κῆνσον Καίσαρι οὔ
But Jesus realized their evil intentions and said, "Hypocrites! Why are you testing me?18Γνοὺς δὲ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πονηρίαν αὐτῶν εἶπεν Τί με πειράζετε ὑποκριταί
Show me the coin used for the tax." So they brought him a denarius.19ἐπιδείξατέ μοι τὸ νόμισμα τοῦ κήνσου Οἱ δὲ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δηνάριον
Jesus said to them, "Whose image is this, and whose inscription?"20Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τίνος εἰκὼν αὕτη καὶ ἐπιγραφή
They replied, "Caesar's." He said to them, "Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."21Λέγουσιν ‹αὐτῷ› Καίσαρος Τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἀπόδοτε οὖν τὰ Καίσαρος Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τῷ Θεῷ
Now when they heard this they were stunned, and they left him and went away. 22Καὶ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύμασαν καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἀπῆλθαν
The same day Sadducees (who say there is no resurrection) came to him and asked him,23Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ Σαδδουκαῖοι λέγοντες μὴ εἶναι ἀνάστασιν καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν
"Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and father children for his brother.'24λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε Μωϋσῆς εἶπεν Ἐάν τις ἀποθάνῃ μὴ ἔχων τέκνα ἐπιγαμβρεύσει ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀναστήσει σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ
Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children he left his wife to his brother.25ἦσαν δὲ παρ’ ἡμῖν ἑπτὰ ἀδελφοί καὶ πρῶτος γήμας ἐτελεύτησεν καὶ μὴ ἔχων σπέρμα ἀφῆκεν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ
The second did the same, and the third, down to the seventh.26ὁμοίως καὶ δεύτερος καὶ τρίτος ἕως τῶν ἑπτά
Last of all, the woman died.27ὕστερον δὲ πάντων ἀπέθανεν γυνή
In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had married her."28ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει οὖν τίνος τῶν ἑπτὰ ἔσται γυνή πάντες γὰρ ἔσχον αὐτήν
Jesus answered them, "You are deceived, because you don't know the scriptures or the power of God.29Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πλανᾶσθε μὴ εἰδότες τὰς γραφὰς μηδὲ τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ Θεοῦ
For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.30ἐν γὰρ τῇ ἀναστάσει οὔτε γαμοῦσιν οὔτε γαμίζονται ἀλλ’ ὡς ἄγγελοι ‹θεοῦ› ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ εἰσιν
Now as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God,31περὶ δὲ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τῶν νεκρῶν οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑμῖν ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ λέγοντος
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living!"32Ἐγώ εἰμι Θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ καὶ Θεὸς Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Θεὸς Ἰακώβ οὐκ ἔστιν Θεὸς νεκρῶν ἀλλὰ ζώντων
When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching. 33Καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ
Now when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they assembled together.34Οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἐφίμωσεν τοὺς Σαδδουκαίους συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό
And one of them, an expert in religious law, asked him a question to test him:35καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν νομικὸς πειράζων αὐτόν
"Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?"36Διδάσκαλε ποία ἐντολὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ νόμῳ
Jesus said to him, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'37 δὲ ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ψυχῇ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ διανοίᾳ σου
This is the first and greatest commandment.38αὕτη ἐστὶν μεγάλη καὶ πρώτη ἐντολή
The second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'39δευτέρα ‹δὲ› ὁμοία αὐτῇ Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν
All the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." 40ἐν ταύταις ταῖς δυσὶν ἐντολαῖς ὅλος νόμος κρέμαται καὶ οἱ προφῆται
While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus asked them a question:41Συνηγμένων δὲ τῶν Φαρισαίων ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς
"What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said, "The son of David."42λέγων Τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ περὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ τίνος υἱός ἐστιν Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Τοῦ Δαυίδ
He said to them, "How then does David by the Spirit call him 'Lord,' saying, 43Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πῶς οὖν Δαυὶδ ἐν Πνεύματι καλεῖ αὐτὸν Κύριον λέγων
The Lord said to my lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet"'? 44Εἶπεν Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου Κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου Ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου Ὑποκάτω τῶν ποδῶν σου
If David then calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?"45Εἰ οὖν Δαυὶδ καλεῖ αὐτὸν Κύριον πῶς υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστιν
No one was able to answer him a word, and from that day on no one dared to question him any longer.
