Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying:1Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Ἰησοῦς πάλιν εἶπεν ἐν παραβολαῖς αὐτοῖς λέγων
"The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.2Ὡμοιώθη βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ βασιλεῖ ὅστις ἐποίησεν γάμους τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ
He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.3καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ καλέσαι τοὺς κεκλημένους εἰς τοὺς γάμους καὶ οὐκ ἤθελον ἐλθεῖν
"Then he sent some more servants and said, 'Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.'4Πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους λέγων Εἴπατε τοῖς κεκλημένοις Ἰδοὺ τὸ ἄριστόν μου ἡτοίμακα οἱ ταῦροί μου καὶ τὰ σιτιστὰ τεθυμένα καὶ πάντα ἕτοιμα δεῦτε εἰς τοὺς γάμους
"But they paid no attention and went off--one to his field, another to his business.5Οἱ δὲ ἀμελήσαντες ἀπῆλθον ὃς μὲν εἰς τὸν ἴδιον ἀγρόν ὃς δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν ἐμπορίαν αὐτοῦ
The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them.6οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ κρατήσαντες τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὕβρισαν καὶ ἀπέκτειναν
The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.7 δὲ βασιλεὺς ὠργίσθη καὶ πέμψας τὰ στρατεύματα αὐτοῦ ἀπώλεσεν τοὺς φονεῖς ἐκείνους καὶ τὴν πόλιν αὐτῶν ἐνέπρησεν
"Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come.8τότε λέγει τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ μὲν γάμος ἕτοιμός ἐστιν οἱ δὲ κεκλημένοι οὐκ ἦσαν ἄξιοι
So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.'9πορεύεσθε οὖν ἐπὶ τὰς διεξόδους τῶν ὁδῶν καὶ ὅσους ἐὰν εὕρητε καλέσατε εἰς τοὺς γάμους
So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.10Καὶ ἐξελθόντες οἱ δοῦλοι ἐκεῖνοι εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς συνήγαγον πάντας οὓς εὗρον πονηρούς τε καὶ ἀγαθούς καὶ ἐπλήσθη γάμος* ἀνακειμένων
"But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes.11Εἰσελθὼν δὲ βασιλεὺς θεάσασθαι τοὺς ἀνακειμένους εἶδεν ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἐνδεδυμένον ἔνδυμα γάμου
He asked, 'How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?' The man was speechless.12καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἑταῖρε πῶς εἰσῆλθες ὧδε μὴ ἔχων ἔνδυμα γάμου δὲ ἐφιμώθη
"Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'13Τότε βασιλεὺς εἶπεν τοῖς διακόνοις Δήσαντες αὐτοῦ πόδας καὶ χεῖρας ἐκβάλετε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον ἐκεῖ ἔσται κλαυθμὸς καὶ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων
"For many are invited, but few are chosen."14Πολλοὶ γάρ εἰσιν κλητοὶ ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί
Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words.15Τότε πορευθέντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συμβούλιον ἔλαβον ὅπως αὐτὸν παγιδεύσωσιν ἐν λόγῳ
They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.16καὶ ἀποστέλλουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτῶν μετὰ τῶν Ἡρῳδιανῶν λέγοντες* Διδάσκαλε οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθὴς εἶ καὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ διδάσκεις καὶ οὐ μέλει σοι περὶ οὐδενός οὐ γὰρ βλέπεις εἰς πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπων
Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?"17εἰπὸν οὖν ἡμῖν τί σοι δοκεῖ ἔξεστιν δοῦναι κῆνσον Καίσαρι οὔ
But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?18Γνοὺς δὲ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πονηρίαν αὐτῶν εἶπεν Τί με πειράζετε ὑποκριταί
Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius,19ἐπιδείξατέ μοι τὸ νόμισμα τοῦ κήνσου Οἱ δὲ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δηνάριον
and he asked them, "Whose image is this? And whose inscription?"20Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τίνος εἰκὼν αὕτη καὶ ἐπιγραφή
"Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "So give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."21Λέγουσιν ‹αὐτῷ› Καίσαρος Τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἀπόδοτε οὖν τὰ Καίσαρος Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τῷ Θεῷ
When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.22Καὶ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύμασαν καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἀπῆλθαν
That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question.23Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ Σαδδουκαῖοι λέγοντες μὴ εἶναι ἀνάστασιν καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν
"Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.24λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε Μωϋσῆς εἶπεν Ἐάν τις ἀποθάνῃ μὴ ἔχων τέκνα ἐπιγαμβρεύσει ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀναστήσει σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ
Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother.25ἦσαν δὲ παρ’ ἡμῖν ἑπτὰ ἀδελφοί καὶ πρῶτος γήμας ἐτελεύτησεν καὶ μὴ ἔχων σπέρμα ἀφῆκεν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ
The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh.26ὁμοίως καὶ δεύτερος καὶ τρίτος ἕως τῶν ἑπτά
Finally, the woman died.27ὕστερον δὲ πάντων ἀπέθανεν γυνή
Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?"28ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει οὖν τίνος τῶν ἑπτὰ ἔσται γυνή πάντες γὰρ ἔσχον αὐτήν
Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.29Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πλανᾶσθε μὴ εἰδότες τὰς γραφὰς μηδὲ τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ Θεοῦ
At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.30ἐν γὰρ τῇ ἀναστάσει οὔτε γαμοῦσιν οὔτε γαμίζονται ἀλλ’ ὡς ἄγγελοι ‹θεοῦ› ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ εἰσιν
But about the resurrection of the dead--have you not read what God said to you,31περὶ δὲ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τῶν νεκρῶν οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑμῖν ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ λέγοντος
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."32Ἐγώ εἰμι Θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ καὶ Θεὸς Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Θεὸς Ἰακώβ οὐκ ἔστιν Θεὸς νεκρῶν ἀλλὰ ζώντων
When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.33Καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ
Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.34Οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἐφίμωσεν τοὺς Σαδδουκαίους συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό
One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:35καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν νομικὸς πειράζων αὐτόν
"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"36Διδάσκαλε ποία ἐντολὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ νόμῳ
Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'37 δὲ ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ψυχῇ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ διανοίᾳ σου
This is the first and greatest commandment.38αὕτη ἐστὶν μεγάλη καὶ πρώτη ἐντολή
And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'39δευτέρα ‹δὲ› ὁμοία αὐτῇ Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."40ἐν ταύταις ταῖς δυσὶν ἐντολαῖς ὅλος νόμος κρέμαται καὶ οἱ προφῆται
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,41Συνηγμένων δὲ τῶν Φαρισαίων ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς
"What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?" "The son of David," they replied.42λέγων Τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ περὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ τίνος υἱός ἐστιν Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Τοῦ Δαυίδ
He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says,43Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πῶς οὖν Δαυὶδ ἐν Πνεύματι καλεῖ αὐτὸν Κύριον λέγων
"'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet."'44Εἶπεν Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου Κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου Ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου Ὑποκάτω τῶν ποδῶν σου
If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?"45Εἰ οὖν Δαυὶδ καλεῖ αὐτὸν Κύριον πῶς υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστιν
No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.46Καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐδύνατο ἀποκριθῆναι αὐτῷ λόγον οὐδὲ ἐτόλμησέν τις ἀπ’ ἐκείνης τῆς ἡμέρας ἐπερωτῆσαι αὐτὸν οὐκέτι
