Matthew 22

The Parable of the Banquet
(Luke 14:15–24)

1  Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πάλιν (again) εἶπεν (spoke) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) αὐτοῖς (to them) λέγων (saying)· 2  Ὡμοιώθη (Was likened) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἀνθρώπῳ (to a man) βασιλεῖ (a king), ὅστις (who) ἐποίησεν (made) γάμους (a wedding feast) τῷ (for the) υἱῷ (son) αὐτοῦ (of him). 3  καὶ (And) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) καλέσαι (to call) τοὺς (those) κεκλημένους (having been called) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) γάμους (wedding feast), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤθελον (they were willing) ἐλθεῖν (to come).

4  Πάλιν (Again) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) ἄλλους (other) δούλους (servants) λέγων (saying)· Εἴπατε (Say) τοῖς (to those) κεκλημένοις (having been called)· Ἰδοὺ (Behold) τὸ (the) ἄριστόν (dinner) μου (of me) ἡτοίμακα (I have prepared), οἱ (the) ταῦροί (oxen) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) σιτιστὰ (fatlings) τεθυμένα (have been killed), καὶ (and) πάντα (all things are) ἕτοιμα (ready)· δεῦτε (come) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) γάμους (wedding feast).

5  Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀμελήσαντες (having disregarded it) ἀπῆλθον (they went away), ὃς (one) μὲν (-) εἰς (to) τὸν (his) ἴδιον (own) ἀγρόν (field), ὃς (one) δὲ (then) ἐπὶ (to) τὴν (the) ἐμπορίαν (business) αὐτοῦ (of him)· 6  οἱ (-) δὲ (And) λοιποὶ (the rest) κρατήσαντες (having laid hold of) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὕβρισαν (mistreated) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτειναν (killed them).

7  (-) δὲ (And) βασιλεὺς (the king) ὠργίσθη (was enraged), καὶ (and) πέμψας (having sent) τὰ (the) στρατεύματα (armies) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπώλεσεν (he destroyed) τοὺς (the) φονεῖς (murderers) ἐκείνους (those) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐνέπρησεν (he set on fire). 8  τότε (Then) λέγει (he says) τοῖς (to) δούλοις (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him)· (The) μὲν (indeed) γάμος (wedding feast) ἕτοιμός (ready) ἐστιν (is), οἱ (those) δὲ (however) κεκλημένοι (having been called) οὐκ (not) ἦσαν (were) ἄξιοι (worthy)· 9  πορεύεσθε (Go) οὖν (therefore) ἐπὶ (on) τὰς (the) διεξόδους (thoroughfares) τῶν (of the) ὁδῶν (roads), καὶ (and) ὅσους (as many as) ἐὰν (if) εὕρητε (you⁺ may find) καλέσατε (call) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) γάμους (wedding feast).

10  Καὶ (And) ἐξελθόντες (having gone out) οἱ (the) δοῦλοι (servants) ἐκεῖνοι (those) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) ὁδοὺς (roads) συνήγαγον (they gathered together) πάντας (all) οὓς (whom) εὗρον (they found), πονηρούς (evil) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἀγαθούς (good)· καὶ (and) ἐπλήσθη (was filled) (the) γάμος (wedding feast) ἀνακειμένων (with those reclining).

11  Εἰσελθὼν (Having entered) δὲ (then) (the) βασιλεὺς (king) θεάσασθαι (to view) τοὺς (those) ἀνακειμένους (reclining) εἶδεν (he saw) ἐκεῖ (there) ἄνθρωπον (a man) οὐκ (not) ἐνδεδυμένον (dressed) ἔνδυμα (in clothing) γάμου (of a wedding feast)· 12  καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἑταῖρε (Friend), πῶς (how) εἰσῆλθες (did you enter) ὧδε (here) μὴ (not) ἔχων (having) ἔνδυμα (clothing) γάμου (of a wedding feast)?

(-) δὲ (And) ἐφιμώθη (he was speechless).

13  Τότε (Then) (the) βασιλεὺς (king) εἶπεν (said) τοῖς (to the) διακόνοις (servants)· Δήσαντες (Having bound) αὐτοῦ (his) πόδας (feet) καὶ (and) χεῖρας (hands) ἐκβάλετε (cast out) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) τὸ (-) ἐξώτερον (outer)· ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) (-) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) (-) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth).

14  Πολλοὶ (Many) γάρ (for) εἰσιν (are) κλητοὶ (called), ὀλίγοι (few) δὲ (however) ἐκλεκτοί (chosen).

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15  Τότε (Then) πορευθέντες (having gone) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) συμβούλιον (counsel) ἔλαβον (took) ὅπως (how) αὐτὸν (Him) παγιδεύσωσιν (they might trap) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (a word). 16  καὶ (And) ἀποστέλλουσιν (they send) αὐτῷ (to Him) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτῶν (of them) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) Ἡρῳδιανῶν (Herodians) λέγοντες (saying)· Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἀληθὴς (true) εἶ (You are) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) διδάσκεις (You teach), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) μέλει (there is care) σοι (to You) περὶ (about) οὐδενός (no one), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) βλέπεις (You look) εἰς (to) πρόσωπον (the appearance) ἀνθρώπων (of men)· 17  εἰπὸν (Tell) οὖν (therefore) ἡμῖν (us), τί (what) σοι (You) δοκεῖ (think)? ἔξεστιν (Is it lawful) δοῦναι (to give) κῆνσον (tribute) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) (or) οὔ (not)?

18  Γνοὺς (Having known) δὲ (however) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὴν (the) πονηρίαν (malice) αὐτῶν (of them) εἶπεν (He said)· Τί (Why) με (Me) πειράζετε (do you⁺ test), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)? 19  ἐπιδείξατέ (Show) μοι (Me) τὸ (the) νόμισμα (coin) τοῦ (of the) κήνσου (tribute).

Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) προσήνεγκαν (they presented) αὐτῷ (to Him) δηνάριον (a denarius).

20  Καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Τίνος (Whose is) (the) εἰκὼν (image) αὕτη (this) καὶ (And) (whose) ἐπιγραφή (inscription)?

21  Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Καίσαρος (Caesar’s).

Τότε (Then) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἀπόδοτε (Give back) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the things) Καίσαρος (of Caesar) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

22  Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) ἐθαύμασαν (they marveled), καὶ (and) ἀφέντες (having left) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπῆλθαν (they went away).

The Sadducees and the Resurrection

23  Ἐν (On) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) Σαδδουκαῖοι (Sadducees), λέγοντες (saying) μὴ (not) εἶναι (there is) ἀνάστασιν (a resurrection), καὶ (and) ἐπηρώτησαν (they questioned) αὐτὸν (Him) 24  λέγοντες (saying)· Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), Μωϋσῆς (Moses) εἶπεν (said)· Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀποθάνῃ (should die) μὴ (not) ἔχων (having) τέκνα (children), ἐπιγαμβρεύσει (will marry) (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἀναστήσει (he will raise up) σπέρμα (seed) τῷ (for the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him). 25  ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (now) παρ’ (with) ἡμῖν (us) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἀδελφοί (brothers)· καὶ (and) (the) πρῶτος (first) γήμας (having married) ἐτελεύτησεν (died), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἔχων (having) σπέρμα (seed) ἀφῆκεν (he left) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him) τῷ (to the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him)· 26  ὁμοίως (Likewise) καὶ (also) (the) δεύτερος (second) καὶ (and) (the) τρίτος (third), ἕως (to) τῶν (the) ἑπτά (seventh)· 27  ὕστερον (Last) δὲ (then) πάντων (of all) ἀπέθανεν (died) (the) γυνή (woman). 28  ἐν (In) τῇ (the) ἀναστάσει (resurrection) οὖν (therefore) τίνος (of which) τῶν (of the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἔσται (will she be) γυνή (wife)? πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) ἔσχον (had) αὐτήν (her).

29  Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Πλανᾶσθε (You⁺ go astray) μὴ (not) εἰδότες (knowing) τὰς (the) γραφὰς (Scriptures) μηδὲ (nor) τὴν (the) δύναμιν (power) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). 30  ἐν (In) γὰρ (for) τῇ (the) ἀναστάσει (resurrection) οὔτε (neither) γαμοῦσιν (do they marry) οὔτε (nor) γαμίζονται (are they given in marriage), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (like) ἄγγελοι (angels) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven) εἰσιν (they are). 31  περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (however) τῆς (the) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) τῶν (of the) νεκρῶν (dead) οὐκ (not) ἀνέγνωτε (did you⁺ read) τὸ (what) ῥηθὲν (has been spoken) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) λέγοντος (saying)· 32  Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) (the) Θεὸς (God) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham) καὶ (and) (the) Θεὸς (God) Ἰσαὰκ (of Isaac) καὶ (and) (the) Θεὸς (God) Ἰακώβ (of Jacob)? οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (He is) (the) Θεὸς (God) νεκρῶν (of the dead) ἀλλὰ (but) ζώντων (of the living).

33  Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (were astonished) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

The Greatest Commandment

34  Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) ὅτι (that) ἐφίμωσεν (He silenced) τοὺς (the) Σαδδουκαίους (Sadducees), συνήχθησαν (were gathered) ἐπὶ (at) τὸ (the) αὐτό (same place), 35  καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησεν (questioned) εἷς (one) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) νομικὸς (a lawyer) πειράζων (testing) αὐτόν (Him)· 36  Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), ποία (which) ἐντολὴ (commandment) μεγάλη (is great) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (Law)?

37  (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (He said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you) καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ψυχῇ (soul) σου (of you) καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) διανοίᾳ (mind) σου (of you). 38  αὕτη (This) ἐστὶν (is) (the) μεγάλη (great) καὶ (and) πρώτη (first) ἐντολή (commandment). 39  δευτέρα (The second) δὲ (also) ὁμοία (is like) αὐτῇ (it)· Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself). 40  ἐν (On) ταύταις (these) ταῖς (-) δυσὶν (two) ἐντολαῖς (commandments) ὅλος (all) (the) νόμος (Law) κρέμαται (hang) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) προφῆται (Prophets).

41  Συνηγμένων (Having been assembled together) δὲ (now) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ἐπηρώτησεν (questioned) αὐτοὺς (them) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) 42  λέγων (saying)· Τί (What) ὑμῖν (you⁺) δοκεῖ (think) περὶ (about) τοῦ (the) Χριστοῦ (Christ)? τίνος (Of whom) υἱός (son) ἐστιν (is He)?

46  Καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐδύνατο (was able) ἀποκριθῆναι (to answer) αὐτῷ (Him) λόγον (a word), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐτόλμησέν (dared) τις (anyone) ἀπ’ (from) ἐκείνης (that) τῆς (-) ἡμέρας (day) ἐπερωτῆσαι (to question) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐκέτι (no longer).
