Matthew 21

The Triumphal Entry
(Zechariah 9:9–13; Mark 11:1–11; Luke 19:28–40; John 12:12–19)

1  Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἤγγισαν (they drew near) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) καὶ (and) ἦλθον (came) εἰς (to) Βηθφαγὴ (Bethphage) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), τότε (then) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) δύο (two) μαθητὰς (disciples) 2  λέγων (saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Πορεύεσθε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κώμην (village) τὴν (-) κατέναντι (ahead) ὑμῶν (of you⁺), καὶ (and) εὐθέως (immediately) εὑρήσετε (you⁺ will find) ὄνον (a donkey) δεδεμένην (tied) καὶ (and) πῶλον (a colt) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her)· λύσαντες (having loosed them) ἀγάγετέ (bring them) μοι (to Me). 3  καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) εἴπῃ (should say) τι (anything), ἐρεῖτε (you⁺ will say) ὅτι (that) (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτῶν (of them) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has)· εὐθὺς (Immediately) δὲ (then) ἀποστελεῖ (he will send) αὐτούς (them).

4  Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (then) γέγονεν (came to pass) ἵνα (so that) πληρωθῇ (it might be fulfilled) τὸ (that) ῥηθὲν (having been spoken) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet) λέγοντος (saying)·

5  Εἴπατε (Say) τῇ (to the) θυγατρὶ (daughter) Σιών (of Zion)·

Ἰδοὺ (Behold) (the) Βασιλεύς (King) σου (of you) ἔρχεταί (comes) σοι (to you)

πραῢς (gentle) καὶ (and) ἐπιβεβηκὼς (mounted) ἐπὶ (on) ὄνον (a donkey)

καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) πῶλον (a colt) υἱὸν (the foal) ὑποζυγίου (of a beast of burden).

6  Πορευθέντες (Having gone) δὲ (then) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) καὶ (and) ποιήσαντες (having done) καθὼς (as) συνέταξεν (directed) αὐτοῖς (them) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) 7  ἤγαγον (they led) τὴν (the) ὄνον (donkey) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), καὶ (and) ἐπέθηκαν (put) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῶν (them) τὰ (their) ἱμάτια (garments), καὶ (and) ἐπεκάθισεν (He sat) ἐπάνω (on) αὐτῶν (them).

8  (The) δὲ (now) πλεῖστος (very large) ὄχλος (crowd) ἔστρωσαν (spread) ἑαυτῶν (their) τὰ (-) ἱμάτια (garments) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road), ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (now) ἔκοπτον (were cutting) κλάδους (branches) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) δένδρων (trees) καὶ (and) ἐστρώννυον (were spreading them) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road).

9  Οἱ (The) δὲ (now) ὄχλοι (crowds) οἱ (-) προάγοντες (going before) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἔκραζον (were crying out) λέγοντες (saying)·

Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David)·

Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)·

Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὑψίστοις (highest).

10  Καὶ (And) εἰσελθόντος (having entered) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ἐσείσθη (was shaken) πᾶσα (all) (the) πόλις (city) λέγουσα (saying)· Τίς (Who) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this)?

11  Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ὄχλοι (the crowds) ἔλεγον (were saying)· Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) (the) προφήτης (prophet) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) (the One) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρὲθ (Nazareth) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee).

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

12  Καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple) καὶ (and) ἐξέβαλεν (cast out) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling) καὶ (and) ἀγοράζοντας (buying) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) τραπέζας (tables) τῶν (of the) κολλυβιστῶν (money changers) κατέστρεψεν (He overturned) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) καθέδρας (seats) τῶν (of those) πωλούντων (selling) τὰς (the) περιστεράς (doves), 13  καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Γέγραπται (It has been written)· (The) οἶκός (house) μου (of Me) οἶκος (a house) προσευχῆς (of prayer) κληθήσεται (will be called), ὑμεῖς (You⁺) δὲ (however) αὐτὸν (it) ποιεῖτε (are making)· Σπήλαιον (a den) λῃστῶν (of robbers).

14  Καὶ (And) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) τυφλοὶ (the blind) καὶ (and) χωλοὶ (the lame) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτούς (them). 15  ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) τὰ (the) θαυμάσια (wonders) (that) ἐποίησεν (He did) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) παῖδας (children) τοὺς (the) κράζοντας (crying out) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) καὶ (and) λέγοντας (saying)· Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David), ἠγανάκτησαν (they were indignant),

16  καὶ (and) εἶπαν (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Ἀκούεις (Do You hear) τί (what) οὗτοι (these) λέγουσιν (say)?

(-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ναί (Yes)· οὐδέποτε (never) ἀνέγνωτε (did you⁺ read)

ὅτι (-) Ἐκ (Out of) στόματος (the mouth) νηπίων (of babes) καὶ (and) θηλαζόντων (sucklings)

Κατηρτίσω (You prepared) αἶνον (praise)?

17  Καὶ (And) καταλιπὼν (having left) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐξῆλθεν (He went) ἔξω (out of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city) εἰς (to) Βηθανίαν (Bethany), καὶ (and) ηὐλίσθη (He lodged) ἐκεῖ (there).

The Barren Fig Tree

18  Πρωῒ (In the morning) δὲ (then) ἐπανάγων (having come back) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city) ἐπείνασεν (He was hungry). 19  καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) συκῆν (fig tree) μίαν (one) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) ὁδοῦ (way) ἦλθεν (He went) ἐπ’ (to) αὐτήν (it), καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (nothing) εὗρεν (found) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) φύλλα (leaves) μόνον (only), καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτῇ (to it)· Οὐ (Never) μηκέτι (no more) ἐκ (out of) σοῦ (you) καρπὸς (fruit) γένηται (let there be) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). καὶ (And) ἐξηράνθη (withered) παραχρῆμα (immediately) (the) συκῆ (fig tree).

20  Καὶ (And) ἰδόντες (having seen it) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἐθαύμασαν (marveled) λέγοντες (saying)· Πῶς (How) παραχρῆμα (immediately) ἐξηράνθη (withered) (the) συκῆ (fig tree)?

21  Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), ἐὰν (if) ἔχητε (you⁺ shall have) πίστιν (faith) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) διακριθῆτε (doubt), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) τὸ (this) τῆς (of the) συκῆς (fig tree) ποιήσετε (will you⁺ do), ἀλλὰ (but) κἂν (even if) τῷ (to the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (this) εἴπητε (you⁺ should say)· Ἄρθητι (Be taken away) καὶ (and) βλήθητι (be cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea), γενήσεται (it will come to pass)· 22  καὶ (And) πάντα (all things) ὅσα (as many as) ἂν (-) αἰτήσητε (you⁺ might ask) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (prayer) πιστεύοντες (believing) λήμψεσθε (you⁺ will receive).

23  Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντος (having come) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) διδάσκοντι (teaching) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) λέγοντες (saying)· Ἐν (By) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιεῖς (do You do)? καὶ (And) τίς (who) σοι (You) ἔδωκεν (gave) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ταύτην (this)?

24  Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἐρωτήσω (Will ask) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) κἀγὼ (I also) λόγον (word) ἕνα (one), ὃν (which) ἐὰν (if) εἴπητέ (you⁺ tell) μοι (Me), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμῖν (you⁺) ἐρῶ (will tell) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do)· 25  τὸ (The) βάπτισμα (baptism) τὸ (of) Ἰωάννου (John) πόθεν (from where) ἦν (was it)? ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) (or) ἐξ (from) ἀνθρώπων (men)?

Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) διελογίζοντο (they were reasoning) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) λέγοντες (saying)· Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say)· Ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ἐρεῖ (He will say) ἡμῖν (to us)· Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὖν (then) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (did you⁺ believe) αὐτῷ (him)? 26  ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπωμεν (we should say)· Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men), φοβούμεθα (we fear) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd)· πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) ἔχουσιν (hold) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John). 27  καὶ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) εἶπαν (they said)· Οὐκ (Not) οἴδαμεν (we know).

Ἔφη (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) καὶ (also) αὐτός (He)· Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (tell) ὑμῖν (you⁺) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do).

The Parable of the Two Sons

28  Τί (What) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (you⁺) δοκεῖ (think)? ἄνθρωπος (A man) εἶχεν (had) τέκνα (sons) δύο (two)· καὶ (and) προσελθὼν (having come) τῷ (to the) πρώτῳ (first) εἶπεν (he said)· Τέκνον (Son), ὕπαγε (go) σήμερον (today) ἐργάζου (work) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀμπελῶνι (vineyard).

29  (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said)· Οὐ (Not) θέλω (will I) ὕστερον (Afterward) δὲ (however) μεταμεληθεὶς (having repented) ἀπῆλθεν (he went).

30  Προσελθὼν (Having come) δὲ (then) τῷ (to the) δευτέρῳ (second) εἶπεν (he said) ὡσαύτως (likewise).

(-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said)· Ἐγώ (I will) κύριε (sir) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀπῆλθεν (he went).

31  Τίς (Which) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) δύο (two) ἐποίησεν (did) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) πατρός (father)?

Λέγουσιν (They say)· (The) πρῶτος (first).

Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) προάγουσιν (go before) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). 32  ἦλθεν (Came) γὰρ (for) Ἰωάννης (John) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἐν (in) ὁδῷ (the way) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (you⁺ believed) αὐτῷ (him)· οἱ (-) δὲ (however) τελῶναι (the tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) αὐτῷ (him)· ὑμεῖς (you⁺) δὲ (then) ἰδόντες (having seen) οὐδὲ (not even) μετεμελήθητε (repented) ὕστερον (afterward) τοῦ (-) πιστεῦσαι (to believe) αὐτῷ (him).

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants
(Mark 12:1–12; Luke 20:9–18)

33  Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) ἀκούσατε (hear). Ἄνθρωπος (A man) ἦν (there was) οἰκοδεσπότης (a master of a house) ὅστις (who) ἐφύτευσεν (planted) ἀμπελῶνα (a vineyard), καὶ (and) φραγμὸν (a fence) αὐτῷ (it) περιέθηκεν (placed around) καὶ (and) ὤρυξεν (dug) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (it) ληνὸν (a winepress) καὶ (and) ᾠκοδόμησεν (built) πύργον (a tower), καὶ (and) ἐξέδετο (rented out) αὐτὸν (it) γεωργοῖς (to farmers), καὶ (and) ἀπεδήμησεν (traveled abroad).

34  Ὅτε (When) δὲ (then) ἤγγισεν (drew near) (the) καιρὸς (season) τῶν (of the) καρπῶν (fruits), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) γεωργοὺς (farmers) λαβεῖν (to receive) τοὺς (the) καρποὺς (fruits) αὐτοῦ (of him). 35  καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taken) οἱ (the) γεωργοὶ (farmers) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὃν (one) μὲν (-) ἔδειραν (they beat), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἐλιθοβόλησαν (they stoned).

36  Πάλιν (Again) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) ἄλλους (other) δούλους (servants) πλείονας (more) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first), καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (they did) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὡσαύτως (likewise).

37  Ὕστερον (Afterward) δὲ (then) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (son) αὐτοῦ (of him) λέγων (saying)· Ἐντραπήσονται (They will respect) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) μου (of me).

38  Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) γεωργοὶ (the farmers) ἰδόντες (having seen) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (son) εἶπον (said) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves)· Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) (the) κληρονόμος (heir)· δεῦτε (come) ἀποκτείνωμεν (let us kill) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) σχῶμεν (gain possession of) τὴν (the) κληρονομίαν (inheritance) αὐτοῦ (of him)· 39  καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taken) αὐτὸν (him) ἐξέβαλον (they cast him) ἔξω (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτειναν (killed him).

40  Ὅταν (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔλθῃ (shall come) (the) κύριος (lord) τοῦ (of the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard), τί (what) ποιήσει (will he do) τοῖς (the) γεωργοῖς (farmers) ἐκείνοις (to those)?

41  Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to him)· Κακοὺς (evil ones) κακῶς (grievously) ἀπολέσει (He will destroy) αὐτούς (those), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀμπελῶνα (vineyard) ἐκδώσεται (he will give out) ἄλλοις (to other) γεωργοῖς (farmers), οἵτινες (who) ἀποδώσουσιν (will give back) αὐτῷ (to him) τοὺς (the) καρποὺς (fruits) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) καιροῖς (seasons) αὐτῶν (of them).

42  Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἀνέγνωτε (did you⁺ read) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) γραφαῖς (Scriptures)·

Λίθον (The stone) ὃν (that) ἀπεδοκίμασαν (rejected) οἱ (those) οἰκοδομοῦντες (building),

Οὗτος (this) ἐγενήθη (became) εἰς (-) κεφαλὴν (the head) γωνίας (of the corner)·

Παρὰ (From) Κυρίου (the Lord) ἐγένετο (was) αὕτη (this),

Καὶ (and) ἔστιν (it is) θαυμαστὴ (marvelous) ἐν (in) ὀφθαλμοῖς (the eyes) ἡμῶν (of us)?

43  Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) ἀρθήσεται (will be taken away) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you⁺) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) δοθήσεται (it will be given) ἔθνει (to a people) ποιοῦντι (producing) τοὺς (the) καρποὺς (fruits) αὐτῆς (of it). 44  καὶ (And) (the one) πεσὼν (having fallen) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone) τοῦτον (this) συνθλασθήσεται (will be broken)· ἐφ’ (on) ὃν (whomever) δ’ (but) ἂν (-) πέσῃ (it might fall), λικμήσει (it will grind to powder) αὐτόν (him).

45  Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) τὰς (the) παραβολὰς (parables) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔγνωσαν (they knew) ὅτι (that) περὶ (about) αὐτῶν (them) λέγει (He speaks)· 46  καὶ (And) ζητοῦντες (seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) κρατῆσαι (to lay hold of) ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐπεὶ (because) εἰς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (Him) εἶχον (they were holding).
