Mark 14
Berean Study Bible

The Plot to Kill Jesus

Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were two days away,

Passover commemorated Israel’s deliverance from Egypt through the blood of the lamb, and the seven-day Feast of Unleavened Bread followed immediately afterward. Jerusalem was crowded with pilgrims for these annual observances. The approaching feast also placed Jesus’ death within the sacrificial setting of Passover, revealing Him as the true Passover Lamb.

Exo 12:1-20 Now the LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,…
Lev 23:4-8 These are the LORD’s appointed feasts, the sacred assemblies…
Deu 16:1-8 Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover…

and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a covert way to arrest Jesus and kill Him.

These religious leaders opposed Jesus because His teaching, authority, and public support threatened their position and exposed their corruption. Fearing public backlash and a disturbance during the feast, they sought to seize Him secretly and put Him to death. Their plot would lead to the fulfillment of God’s purpose through Christ’s sacrificial death for sin.

Mat 26:3-5 At that time the chief priests and elders of the people…
Jhn 11:47-53 Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin…

“But not during the feast,”

The chief priests and scribes feared arresting Jesus during Passover, when Jerusalem was crowded with pilgrims celebrating Israel’s deliverance from Egypt. Because many people respected Jesus, His public arrest could provoke unrest and draw swift Roman retaliation.

Mat 26:5 “But not during the feast,” they said, “or there may be a riot”…
Jhn 11:55-57 Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many people…

they said,

Their secret planning revealed both their determination to kill Him and their concern over the people’s response.

Mat 26:3-4 At that time the chief priests and elders of the people…
Mrk 3:6 At this, the Pharisees went out and began plotting…

“or there may be a riot among the people.”

Though they sought to avoid a disturbance during the festival, they would soon stir the crowd against Jesus and press for His crucifixion.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

While Jesus was in Bethany

Bethany lay about two miles east of Jerusalem on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives. Jesus often stayed there during His visits to Jerusalem, and it was the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. The village provided a setting of friendship and hospitality in the final days before His crucifixion.

Jhn 12:1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany,…
Mat 21:17 Then He left them and went out of the city to Bethany…
Jhn 11:1 At this time a man named Lazarus was sick.…

Meals were commonly eaten while reclining, especially during gatherings of honor and fellowship. Jesus was sharing a meal with those who received Him gladly.

Simon was likely a man whom Jesus had healed, since leprosy ordinarily separated a person from society. His home stands as evidence of Christ’s power to restore those afflicted and excluded.

Luk 7:36 Then one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him…
Luk 5:29 Then Levi hosted a great banquet for Jesus at his house.…

a woman came with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume, made of pure nard.

John identifies the woman as Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. The perfume was highly valuable, imported from distant regions and kept in a sealed alabaster container. Her gift represented a costly and deliberate act of devotion to Jesus.

Jhn 12:3 Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume…
Mat 26:7 a woman came to Him with an alabaster jar…
Luk 7:37 When a sinful woman learned that Jesus was dining there…

She broke open the jar and poured it on Jesus’ head.

By breaking the container, Mary gave its contents without reserve. Anointing the head was associated with honor and the setting apart of kings. Her act also prepared Jesus for His approaching burial, though its full significance would soon become clear.

2Ki 9:3 Then take the flask of oil, pour it on his head,…
Lev 8:12 He also poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head…

Several guests objected privately and spoke among themselves. Their concern centered on the apparent loss of something valuable rather than the significance of honoring Jesus as He approached His death.

Mat 20:24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant…

“Why this waste of perfume?

The costly nard was viewed as an unnecessary extravagance, but the anointing prepared Jesus for burial and revealed the woman’s recognition of His unique worth.

Mat 26:8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant…
Jhn 12:5 Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii…

It could have been sold for over three hundred denarii

A denarius was commonly a laborer’s daily wage, making this perfume worth nearly a year’s earnings. Its cost explains the objection of those present, who viewed the anointing as an unnecessary loss of valuable resources.

and the money given to the poor.”

Care for the poor was an important duty in Jewish life, and the suggestion appeared practical and compassionate. Yet the woman’s gift was not wasteful; she was honoring Jesus at a decisive moment as His death approached.

Their harsh response showed that they did not understand the meaning of her act. While they measured the perfume by its monetary value, Jesus recognized her devotion and the preparation of His body for burial.

Jhn 12:4 But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot,…

She has done a beautiful deed to Me.

Her costly act expressed reverence and devotion to Jesus and also prepared Him for His approaching burial.

Luk 7:44-47 And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon,…

The poor you will always have with you,

Poverty remained a constant reality in Judea, where many families lived with limited resources and depended on work, gifts, or community support. Jesus did not dismiss the needs of the poor; He affirmed that opportunities to care for them would continue.

Jhn 12:8 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not…

Jesus pointed to the short time remaining before His arrest, crucifixion, and burial. His physical presence among the disciples was unique and temporary, making Mary’s act of devotion especially fitting in light of His approaching death.

Jhn 13:33 Little children, I am with you only a little while longer.…
Jhn 16:16 In a little while you will see Me no more,…
Act 1:9-11 He had said this, they watched as He was taken up…

She has done what she could

Her costly act of devotion reflected a willing sacrifice from the resources available to her. Jesus honored her faithfulness rather than the objections of those who considered the perfume wasted.

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

Then Judas Iscariot,

Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, now acted on his decision to hand Him over. His betrayal came after witnessing Jesus’ ministry and sharing in the life of the Twelve.

Jhn 6:71 He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.…
Jhn 12:4 But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot,…

one of the Twelve,

Judas held the same appointed position as the other apostles and had been entrusted with their work and fellowship. His action brought betrayal into Jesus’ closest circle.

Mat 26:47 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve,…
Luk 22:47 While He was still speaking, a crowd arrived,…

went to the chief priests

The chief priests were leading members of the Jerusalem religious establishment and were already seeking a way to arrest Jesus without provoking the crowds. Judas approached them voluntarily.

Jhn 13:2 The evening meal was underway, and the devil…

They were delighted to hear this,

Judas’s offer gave the chief priests the means to arrest Jesus without provoking the crowds, who were still receptive to Him. Their response revealed their determination to remove the One whose authority exposed their unbelief and threatened their influence.

Luk 22:5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.

Preparing the Passover

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,

Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread formed one sacred season commemorating Israel’s deliverance from Egypt. Removing leaven recalled the haste of the exodus and marked the household as set apart for worship.

Lev 23:6 On the fifteenth day begins the Feast of Unleavened Bread…

when the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed,

The lamb’s blood had spared Israel’s firstborn in Egypt. Its sacrifice pointed forward to Christ, whose death would fulfill the deliverance Passover foreshadowed.

Exo 12:6 You must keep it until the fourteenth day of the month…
2Ch 35:1 Then Josiah kept the Passover to the LORD in Jerusalem,…
Deu 16:5-6 You are not to sacrifice the Passover animal…

Jesus’ disciples asked Him,

The disciples looked to Jesus for direction as they prepared to keep the feast according to the Law.

Luk 8:9 Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.
Mrk 4:10 As soon as Jesus was alone with the Twelve…
Mat 17:19 Afterward the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked,…

“Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

Their question led to the meal in which Jesus would share His final Passover with them before His crucifixion, giving new covenant meaning to the bread and cup.

So He sent two of His disciples and told them,

Jesus sent two disciples to make preparations for the Passover meal. Sending them together provided confirmation of the task and ensured that the arrangements would be carried out according to His instructions. Even amid the approaching betrayal and crucifixion, Jesus remained in full command of events.

Mrk 6:7 Then Jesus called the Twelve to Him and began…
Luk 10:1 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others…
Mat 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions:…

His chosen apostles gathered with Him for the Passover meal, representing the beginning of the new covenant people of God. They would witness the events of the supper and receive His final instruction. Judas was also present, though he had already arranged to betray Jesus.

Jhn 6:67-71 So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?”…

They began to be grieved

Jesus’ announcement that one of the Twelve would betray Him brought deep sorrow to the Passover meal. The disciples could not imagine that betrayal would come from within their own fellowship, yet Jesus’ words revealed that His approaching suffering would include abandonment by a close companion.

Jhn 16:20 Truly, truly, I tell you, you will weep and wail…
2Co 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation…

and to ask Him one after another,

Each disciple turned to Jesus personally, searching his own heart and seeking assurance. Their questions show the shock and uncertainty that filled the room as they faced the possibility that any one of them might fail Him.

Mat 26:22 They were deeply grieved and began to ask Him…
Luk 22:23 Then they began to question among themselves.…
Jhn 13:22 The disciples looked at one another, perplexed…

“Surely not I?”

None of the disciples openly claimed to be the betrayer, but each recognized his own weakness. Judas, though already committed to handing Jesus over, joined the others in outwardly questioning Jesus.

1Co 11:28 Each one must examine himself before he eats…
2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith;…
Psa 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me…

He answered,

Jesus responded to the disciples’ troubled questions by identifying the betrayer without yet naming him openly. He knew the intentions of every heart and the events that would lead to His arrest.

Jhn 13:26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this morsel…
Mat 26:21 And while they were eating, He said to them,…
Luk 22:21 Look! The hand of My betrayer is with Mine on the table.

Within hours, Peter denied knowing Jesus three times. His failure exposed the weakness of self-confidence, yet it did not end his service. After His resurrection, Jesus restored Peter, who later became a leading witness to Christ in the early church.

Jesus replied,

Jhn 11:16 Then Thomas called Didymus said to his fellow disciples,…

Watch and pray

Judas approached deliberately in the garden where Jesus had often met with His disciples. As one of the Twelve, he knew Jesus personally and could identify Him without uncertainty. His action carried out the betrayal he had arranged with the chief priests.

The crowd sent by the chief priests, scribes, and elders took Jesus in Gethsemane after Judas identified Him. Though armed and acting under official authority, they arrested the One who had freely submitted to the Father’s will.

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

They led Jesus away to the high priest,

Jesus was taken to Caiaphas, the reigning high priest, after His arrest in Gethsemane. Though He had committed no crime, He submitted to those who had come against Him, as He had foretold His coming suffering and rejection.

Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin

Jerusalem’s chief priests, largely associated with the Sadducean aristocracy, held leading authority in the temple and exercised major influence within the Sanhedrin. were seeking testimony against Jesus

The council had already determined to remove Jesus and searched for witnesses whose statements could support a formal charge. Jewish law required corroborating testimony, yet the proceedings showed their determination to secure a conviction rather than conduct an impartial hearing.

During Jesus’ nighttime trial before the Sanhedrin, additional witnesses came forward in an attempt to establish charges against Him. Their actions reflected the leaders’ determination to secure a conviction despite the irregular and hurried nature of the proceedings.

So the high priest stood up before them

Caiaphas rose in the midst of the Sanhedrin as the proceedings against Jesus reached a critical point. As high priest, he held the leading religious office in Israel and exercised considerable authority over the council. His action reflects both the mounting frustration of the court and the seriousness of the charges being pressed.

Mat 26:62 So the high priest stood up and asked Him,…
Luk 22:66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people,…

and questioned Jesus,

The council had heard conflicting testimony from witnesses, yet none had established a clear case against Him. Caiaphas therefore addressed Jesus directly, seeking a response that could be used against Him. Jesus remained silent before false and inadequate accusations, refusing to legitimize the injustice of the trial.

Jhn 18:19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus…

Luk 23:9 Herod questioned Jesus at great length,…

“Have You no answer?

Jesus refused to answer the false and conflicting accusations brought against Him, fulfilling the portrait of the suffering servant who submitted to affliction without defending Himself. His silence showed His willing submission to the Father’s purpose and the certainty that His death was necessary.

At this, the high priest tore his clothes

Caiaphas responded with public horror at Jesus’ declaration that He was the Messiah and the Son of the Blessed One. As high priest and a leading Sadducee in the Sanhedrin, he treated Jesus’ words as blasphemy and used the gesture to signal the gravity of the charge.

Jesus’ declaration before the high priest openly identified Him as the Messiah and the Son of God. Rather than recognizing the truth of His claim, the high priest treated it as blasphemy, an offense punishable by death under Jewish law. The leaders understood that Jesus was claiming divine authority, but they rejected Him and charged Him with dishonoring God.

The high priest pressed the Sanhedrin for a formal judgment. Though the council was responsible for guarding Israel’s religious life, its members had already determined to destroy Jesus. Their response revealed a united refusal to accept the One sent by God.

Luk 23:24 So Pilate sentenced that their demand be met.

She approached Peter from the house or an upper part of the residence, beginning the confrontation that would lead to his denials.

and saw him warming himself there.

Peter stood among the servants and guards in the high priest’s courtyard, seeking warmth beside their fire and trying to remain unnoticed. The open courtyard of a prominent Jerusalem residence provided a public setting where those connected with the arrest could gather. Yet Peter’s attempt to blend in placed him under closer scrutiny as the trial of Jesus continued nearby.

She looked at Peter

A servant girl noticed Peter in the firelight and recognized him as someone connected with Jesus. Though she held little social standing, her observation became the first direct challenge to Peter’s courage and loyalty in a dangerous setting.

Jhn 18:17 At this, the servant girl watching the door said…

and said, “You also were with Jesus the Nazarene.”

Her accusation publicly linked Peter to Jesus at the very place where Jesus faced condemnation. Identifying Him as Jesus the Nazarene marked Peter as one of His followers, exposing him to the same hostility directed toward his Master and setting in motion the denials Jesus had foretold.

But he denied it.

Peter’s fear overcame his earlier resolve to remain faithful to Jesus. As the trial unfolded, association with Jesus placed His followers at real risk.

Mat 26:70 But he denied it before them all: “I do not know…
Luk 22:57 But Peter denied it. “Woman, I do not know Him,” he said.
Jhn 18:25 Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself.…

“I do not know or even understand what you are talking about,” he said.

Peter denied both knowledge of Jesus and any connection to His disciples. His words show how quickly fear can drive a man to reject what he knows to be true.

Luk 22:60 “Man, I do not know what you are talking about,”…
Mat 26:72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know…
Mat 26:74 At that he began to curse and swear to them,…

Then he went out to the gateway,

Peter moved toward the outer entrance of the high priest’s courtyard, seeking greater distance from those who recognized him. Yet leaving the fire and the crowd did not remove him from the test before him.

Mat 26:71 When Peter had gone out to the gateway, another servant girl…
Jhn 18:16 But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple…

and the rooster crowed.

The sound marked the beginning of the fulfillment of Jesus’ warning. Peter’s denials were not hidden from the Lord, and the rooster’s crow would soon bring his failure fully to mind.

Mat 26:75 Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken:…
Luk 22:61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter…
Jhn 18:27 Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.

There the servant girl saw him

Peter remained in the high priest’s courtyard after Jesus’ arrest, trying to stay near the proceedings without being recognized. The servant girl, likely stationed at the entrance or serving in the household, recognized him from his earlier presence with Jesus.

Luk 22:56 A servant girl saw him seated in the firelight…
Jhn 18:17 At this, the servant girl watching the door said…

and again said to those standing nearby,

Having already confronted Peter, she drew the attention of others in the courtyard. Her public accusation increased the danger and pressure surrounding him as Jesus faced trial.

Mat 26:71 When Peter had gone out to the gateway, another servant girl…
Luk 22:58 A short time later, someone else saw him and said…
Mat 26:73 After a little while, those standing nearby came up…

“This man is one of them.”

She identified Peter as one of Jesus’ disciples. Association with Jesus could bring suspicion and arrest, and Peter again faced the test he had confidently insisted he would endure.

Mat 26:72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know…
Luk 22:59 About an hour later, another man insisted,…
Jhn 18:25 Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself.…

But he denied it again.

Peter’s second denial shows his growing fear as he remains in the high priest’s courtyard while Jesus is being questioned. Though he had vowed loyalty, the danger of being identified with Jesus leads him to deny any connection with Him.

Mat 26:72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know…
Jhn 18:27 Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.

After a little while,

Peter remains among the servants and bystanders, unable to leave the scene yet unwilling to confess openly that he is Jesus’ disciple. The delay heightens the pressure surrounding him.

Luk 22:58 A short time later, someone else saw him and said…
Jhn 18:18 Because it was cold, the servants and officers…

those standing nearby said once more to Peter,

The gathered crowd continues to recognize Peter as someone connected to Jesus. Their repeated challenge leaves him increasingly exposed.

Mat 26:73 After a little while, those standing nearby came up…
Jhn 18:26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative…

“Surely you are one of them,

Their confidence reflects the visible association Peter had with Jesus and the other disciples during His public ministry.

Jhn 18:25 Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself.…
Mat 26:69 Meanwhile, Peter was sitting out in the courtyard…

for you too are a Galilean.”

Peter’s Galilean identity marked him as an outsider in Jerusalem and linked him with Jesus, who was also known as a Galilean. His speech and manner likely confirmed their suspicion.

Luk 22:59 About an hour later, another man insisted,…
Act 2:7 Astounded and amazed, they asked, “Are not all these…

But he began to curse and swear,

Peter intensified his denial by calling down judgment on himself and binding his words with an oath. Fear had overcome his earlier confidence, and he sought to convince those around him that he had no connection with Jesus. As Jesus faced trial and condemnation, Peter stood outside the high priest’s courtyard, unwilling to be identified as His disciple.

Mat 26:74 At that he began to curse and swear to them,…
Jas 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth…
Lev 19:12 You must not swear falsely by My name…

“I do not know this man of whom you speak!”

Peter rejected not only knowledge of Jesus but any association with Him. Calling Him “this man” revealed the distance Peter tried to place between himself and the Lord. His third denial completed what Jesus had foretold, exposing Peter’s weakness while setting the stage for his later repentance and restoration.

Mat 26:72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know…
Luk 22:57 But Peter denied it. “Woman, I do not know Him,” he said.
Jhn 18:17 At this, the servant girl watching the door said…

And immediately the rooster crowed a second time.

The second crowing occurred exactly as Jesus had foretold, bringing Peter’s final denial into clear view. Roosters commonly marked the approach of morning in Jerusalem, and the sound became the unmistakable sign that Jesus’ warning had been fulfilled.

Mat 26:74 At that he began to curse and swear to them,…
Luk 22:60 “Man, I do not know what you are talking about,”…
Jhn 18:27 Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.

Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken to him:

The sound awakened Peter to the full meaning of Jesus’ earlier prediction. His confidence in his own loyalty gave way to the realization that he had denied the Lord three times under pressure.

Luk 22:61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter…
Mat 26:75 Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken:…

“Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”

Jesus had known Peter’s failure beforehand and had stated it with precise detail. Peter’s denials did not surprise the Lord, yet they exposed the weakness of human resolve apart from steadfast faith.

Mat 26:34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus declared, “this very night…”…
Luk 22:34 But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster…
Jhn 13:38 “Will you lay down your life for Me?” Jesus replied.…

And he broke down and wept.

Overwhelmed by sorrow, Peter openly grieved his sin. His tears reveal genuine remorse and mark the beginning of the humility that would prepare him for restoration and future service.

Luk 22:62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;…
Jas 4:9 Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning…
