After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees.1Ταῦτα εἰπὼν Ἰησοῦς ἐξῆλθεν σὺν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ πέραν τοῦ χειμάρρου τοῦ* Κέδρων ὅπου ἦν κῆπος εἰς ὃν εἰσῆλθεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ
Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples.2ᾔδει δὲ καὶ Ἰούδας παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν τὸν τόπον ὅτι πολλάκις συνήχθη Ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖ μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ
The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.3 οὖν Ἰούδας λαβὼν τὴν σπεῖραν καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ὑπηρέτας ἔρχεται ἐκεῖ μετὰ φανῶν καὶ λαμπάδων καὶ ὅπλων
Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. “Who are you looking for?” he asked.4Ἰησοῦς οὖν εἰδὼς πάντα τὰ ἐρχόμενα ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἐξῆλθεν καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τίνα ζητεῖτε
“Jesus the Nazarene,” they replied. “ I Am he,” Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.)5Ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζωραῖον Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἐγώ εἰμι Εἱστήκει δὲ καὶ Ἰούδας παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν μετ’ αὐτῶν
As Jesus said “ I Am he,” they all drew back and fell to the ground!6ὡς οὖν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγώ εἰμι ἀπῆλθον* εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω καὶ ἔπεσαν χαμαί
Once more he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” And again they replied, “Jesus the Nazarene.”7Πάλιν οὖν ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτούς Τίνα ζητεῖτε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζωραῖον
“I told you that I Am he,” Jesus said. “And since I am the one you want, let these others go.”8Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Εἶπον ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι εἰ οὖν ἐμὲ ζητεῖτε ἄφετε τούτους ὑπάγειν
He did this to fulfill his own statement: “I did not lose a single one of those you have given me.”9ἵνα πληρωθῇ λόγος ὃν εἶπεν ὅτι Οὓς δέδωκάς μοι οὐκ ἀπώλεσα ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐδένα
Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest’s slave.10Σίμων οὖν Πέτρος ἔχων μάχαιραν εἵλκυσεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἔπαισεν τὸν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως δοῦλον καὶ ἀπέκοψεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτάριον τὸ δεξιόν ἦν δὲ ὄνομα τῷ δούλῳ Μάλχος
But Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?” Jesus at the High Priest’s House11εἶπεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ Βάλε τὴν μάχαιραν εἰς τὴν θήκην τὸ ποτήριον δέδωκέν μοι Πατήρ οὐ μὴ πίω αὐτό
So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.12 οὖν σπεῖρα καὶ χιλίαρχος καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται τῶν Ἰουδαίων συνέλαβον τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸν
First they took him to Annas, since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time.13καὶ ἤγαγον πρὸς Ἅνναν πρῶτον ἦν γὰρ πενθερὸς τοῦ Καϊάφα ὃς ἦν ἀρχιερεὺς τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου
Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, “It’s better that one man should die for the people.”
Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest’s courtyard with Jesus.15Ἠκολούθει δὲ τῷ Ἰησοῦ Σίμων Πέτρος καὶ ἄλλος μαθητής δὲ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος ἦν γνωστὸς τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ καὶ συνεισῆλθεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως
Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.16 δὲ Πέτρος εἱστήκει πρὸς τῇ θύρᾳ ἔξω ἐξῆλθεν οὖν μαθητὴς ἄλλος γνωστὸς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ εἶπεν τῇ θυρωρῷ καὶ εἰσήγαγεν τὸν Πέτρον
The woman asked Peter, “You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are you?” “No,” he said, “I am not.”17Λέγει οὖν τῷ Πέτρῳ παιδίσκη θυρωρός Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν εἶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου Λέγει ἐκεῖνος Οὐκ εἰμί
Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.
Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them.19 οὖν ἀρχιερεὺς ἠρώτησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν περὶ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς αὐτοῦ
Jesus replied, “Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the people gather. I have not spoken in secret.20Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἐγὼ παρρησίᾳ λελάληκα τῷ κόσμῳ ἐγὼ πάντοτε ἐδίδαξα ἐν συναγωγῇ καὶ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ὅπου πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι συνέρχονται καὶ ἐν κρυπτῷ ἐλάλησα οὐδέν
Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said.”21τί με ἐρωτᾷς ἐρώτησον τοὺς ἀκηκοότας τί ἐλάλησα αὐτοῖς ἴδε οὗτοι οἴδασιν εἶπον ἐγώ
Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. “Is that the way to answer the high priest?” he demanded.22Ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος εἷς παρεστηκὼς τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἔδωκεν ῥάπισμα τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰπών Οὕτως ἀποκρίνῃ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ
Jesus replied, “If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I’m speaking the truth, why are you beating me?”23Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Εἰ κακῶς ἐλάλησα μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ εἰ δὲ καλῶς τί με δέρεις
Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest. Peter’s Second and Third Denials24Ἀπέστειλεν οὖν αὐτὸν Ἅννας δεδεμένον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα
Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, “You’re not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.”25Ἦν δὲ Σίμων Πέτρος ἑστὼς καὶ θερμαινόμενος εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ εἶ Ἠρνήσατο ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν Οὐκ εἰμί
But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?”26Λέγει εἷς ἐκ τῶν δούλων τοῦ ἀρχιερέως συγγενὴς ὢν οὗ ἀπέκοψεν Πέτρος τὸ ὠτίον Οὐκ ἐγώ σε εἶδον ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μετ’ αὐτοῦ
Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed. Jesus’ Trial before Pilate27Πάλιν οὖν ἠρνήσατο Πέτρος καὶ εὐθέως ἀλέκτωρ ἐφώνησεν
Jesus’ trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governor. His accusers didn’t go inside because it would defile them, and they wouldn’t be allowed to celebrate the Passover.28Ἄγουσιν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ Καϊάφα εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον ἦν δὲ πρωΐ καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον ἵνα μὴ μιανθῶσιν ἀλλὰ φάγωσιν τὸ πάσχα
So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked, “What is your charge against this man?”29Ἐξῆλθεν οὖν Πιλᾶτος ἔξω πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ φησίν Τίνα κατηγορίαν φέρετε ‹κατὰ› τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου
“We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!” they retorted.30Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος κακὸν ποιῶν οὐκ ἄν σοι παρεδώκαμεν αὐτόν
“Then take him away and judge him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone,” the Jewish leaders replied.31Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὑμῶν κρίνατε αὐτόν Εἶπον αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Ἡμῖν οὐκ ἔξεστιν ἀποκτεῖναι οὐδένα
(This fulfilled Jesus’ prediction about the way he would die. )32ἵνα λόγος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ πληρωθῇ ὃν εἶπεν σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ ἤμελλεν ἀποθνήσκειν
Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him.33Εἰσῆλθεν οὖν πάλιν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἐφώνησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Jesus replied, “Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?”34Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Ἀπὸ* σεαυτοῦ* σὺ τοῦτο λέγεις ἄλλοι εἶπόν σοι περὶ ἐμοῦ
“Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”35Ἀπεκρίθη Πιλᾶτος Μήτι ἐγὼ Ἰουδαῖός εἰμι τὸ ἔθνος τὸ σὸν καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς παρέδωκάν σε ἐμοί τί ἐποίησας
Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”36Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς βασιλεία ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου εἰ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἦν βασιλεία ἐμή οἱ ὑπηρέται ἄν «οἱ ἐμοὶ ἠγωνίζοντο» ἵνα μὴ παραδοθῶ τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις νῦν δὲ βασιλεία ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐντεῦθεν
Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”37Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτῷ Πιλᾶτος Οὐκοῦν βασιλεὺς εἶ σύ Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Σὺ λέγεις ὅτι βασιλεύς εἰμι ἐγὼ εἰς τοῦτο γεγέννημαι καὶ εἰς τοῦτο ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα μαρτυρήσω τῇ ἀληθείᾳ πᾶς ὢν ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας ἀκούει μου τῆς φωνῆς
“What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime.38Λέγει αὐτῷ Πιλᾶτος Τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια Καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν πάλιν ἐξῆλθεν πρὸς τοὺς Ἰουδαίους καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἐγὼ οὐδεμίαν εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν
But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this ‘King of the Jews’?”39ἔστιν δὲ συνήθεια ὑμῖν ἵνα ἕνα ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν ἐν τῷ πάσχα βούλεσθε οὖν ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων
But they shouted back, “No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a revolutionary.)40Ἐκραύγασαν οὖν πάλιν λέγοντες Μὴ τοῦτον ἀλλὰ τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἦν δὲ Βαραββᾶς λῃστής
