1After Jesus had said all of this, he went with his disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.

1Ταῦτα εἰπὼν Ἰησοῦς ἐξῆλθεν σὺν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ πέραν τοῦ χειμάρρου τοῦ* Κέδρων ὅπου ἦν κῆπος εἰς ὃν εἰσῆλθεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ

2Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples.

2ᾔδει δὲ καὶ Ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν τὸν τόπον ὅτι πολλάκις συνήχθη Ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖ μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ

3So Judas took a detachment of soldiers and some officers from the high priests and the Pharisees and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

3ὁ οὖν Ἰούδας λαβὼν τὴν σπεῖραν καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ὑπηρέτας ἔρχεται ἐκεῖ μετὰ φανῶν καὶ λαμπάδων καὶ ὅπλων

4Then Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen, went forward and asked them, "Who are you looking for?"

4Ἰησοῦς οὖν εἰδὼς πάντα τὰ ἐρχόμενα ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἐξῆλθεν καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Τίνα ζητεῖτε

5They answered him, "Jesus from Nazareth." Jesus told them, "I AM." Judas, the man who betrayed him, was standing with them.

5Ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζωραῖον Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἐγώ εἰμι Εἱστήκει δὲ καὶ Ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν μετ’ αὐτῶν

6When Jesus told them, "I AM," they backed away and fell to the ground.

6ὡς οὖν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγώ εἰμι ἀπῆλθον* εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω καὶ ἔπεσαν χαμαί

7So he asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus from Nazareth."

7Πάλιν οὖν ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτούς Τίνα ζητεῖτε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζωραῖον

8Jesus replied, "I told you that I am the one, so if you are looking for me, let these men go."

8Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Εἶπον ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι εἰ οὖν ἐμὲ ζητεῖτε ἄφετε τούτους ὑπάγειν

9This was to fulfill what he had said, "I did not lose a single one of those you gave me."

9ἵνα πληρωθῇ ὁ λόγος ὃν εἶπεν ὅτι Οὓς δέδωκάς μοι οὐκ ἀπώλεσα ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐδένα

10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

10Σίμων οὖν Πέτρος ἔχων μάχαιραν εἵλκυσεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἔπαισεν τὸν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως δοῦλον καὶ ἀπέκοψεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτάριον τὸ δεξιόν ἦν δὲ ὄνομα τῷ δούλῳ Μάλχος

11Jesus told Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Shouldn't I drink the cup that the Father has given me?"

11εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ Βάλε τὴν μάχαιραν εἰς τὴν θήκην τὸ ποτήριον ὃ δέδωκέν μοι ὁ Πατήρ οὐ μὴ πίω αὐτό

12Then the soldiers, along with their commander and the Jewish officers, arrested Jesus and tied him up.

12Ἡ οὖν σπεῖρα καὶ ὁ χιλίαρχος καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται τῶν Ἰουδαίων συνέλαβον τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸν

13First they brought him to Annas, because he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.

13καὶ ἤγαγον πρὸς Ἅνναν πρῶτον ἦν γὰρ πενθερὸς τοῦ Καϊάφα ὃς ἦν ἀρχιερεὺς τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου

14Caiaphas was the person who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one man die for the people.

14ἦν δὲ Καϊάφας ὁ συμβουλεύσας τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ὅτι συμφέρει ἕνα ἄνθρωπον ἀποθανεῖν ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ

15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since the other disciple was known to the high priest, he accompanied Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

15Ἠκολούθει δὲ τῷ Ἰησοῦ Σίμων Πέτρος καὶ ἄλλος μαθητής ὁ δὲ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος ἦν γνωστὸς τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ καὶ συνεισῆλθεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως

16Peter, however, stood outside the gate. So this other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter inside.

16ὁ δὲ Πέτρος εἱστήκει πρὸς τῇ θύρᾳ ἔξω ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ μαθητὴς ὁ ἄλλος ὁ γνωστὸς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ εἶπεν τῇ θυρωρῷ καὶ εἰσήγαγεν τὸν Πέτρον

17The young woman at the gate asked Peter, "You aren't one of this man's disciples, too, are you?" "I am not," he replied.

17Λέγει οὖν τῷ Πέτρῳ ἡ παιδίσκη ἡ θυρωρός Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν εἶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου Λέγει ἐκεῖνος Οὐκ εἰμί

18Meanwhile, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had built and were warming themselves because it was cold. Peter was also standing with them, keeping himself warm.

18Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ δοῦλοι καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται ἀνθρακιὰν πεποιηκότες ὅτι ψῦχος ἦν καὶ ἐθερμαίνοντο ἦν δὲ καὶ ὁ Πέτρος μετ’ αὐτῶν ἑστὼς καὶ θερμαινόμενος

19Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his own teaching.

19Ὁ οὖν ἀρχιερεὺς ἠρώτησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν περὶ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς αὐτοῦ

20Jesus answered him, "I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue or in the Temple, where all Jews meet together, and I have said nothing in secret.

20Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἐγὼ παρρησίᾳ λελάληκα τῷ κόσμῳ ἐγὼ πάντοτε ἐδίδαξα ἐν συναγωγῇ καὶ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ὅπου πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι συνέρχονται καὶ ἐν κρυπτῷ ἐλάλησα οὐδέν

21Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said. These are the people who know what I said."

21τί με ἐρωτᾷς ἐρώτησον τοὺς ἀκηκοότας τί ἐλάλησα αὐτοῖς ἴδε οὗτοι οἴδασιν ἃ εἶπον ἐγώ

22When he said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Jesus on the face and demanded, "Is that any way to answer the high priest?"

22Ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος εἷς παρεστηκὼς τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἔδωκεν ῥάπισμα τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰπών Οὕτως ἀποκρίνῃ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ

23Jesus answered him, "If I have said anything wrong, tell me what it was. But if I have told the truth, why do you hit me?"

23Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Εἰ κακῶς ἐλάλησα μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ εἰ δὲ καλῶς τί με δέρεις

24Then Annas sent him, with his hands tied, to Caiaphas the high priest.

24Ἀπέστειλεν οὖν αὐτὸν ὁ Ἅννας δεδεμένον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα

25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Some people asked him, "You aren't one of his disciples, too, are you?" He denied it by saying, "I am not!"

25Ἦν δὲ Σίμων Πέτρος ἑστὼς καὶ θερμαινόμενος εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ εἶ Ἠρνήσατο ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν Οὐκ εἰμί

26Then one of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "I saw you in the garden with Jesus, didn't I?"

26Λέγει εἷς ἐκ τῶν δούλων τοῦ ἀρχιερέως συγγενὴς ὢν οὗ ἀπέκοψεν Πέτρος τὸ ὠτίον Οὐκ ἐγώ σε εἶδον ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μετ’ αὐτοῦ

27Peter again denied it, and immediately a rooster crowed.

27Πάλιν οὖν ἠρνήσατο Πέτρος καὶ εὐθέως ἀλέκτωρ ἐφώνησεν

28Then Jesus was led from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters early in the morning. The Jews did not go into the headquarters, to avoid becoming unclean and unable to eat the Passover meal.

28Ἄγουσιν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ Καϊάφα εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον ἦν δὲ πρωΐ καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον ἵνα μὴ μιανθῶσιν ἀλλὰ φάγωσιν τὸ πάσχα

29So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What accusation are you bringing against this man?"

29Ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἔξω πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ φησίν Τίνα κατηγορίαν φέρετε ‹κατὰ› τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου

30They answered him, "If he weren't a criminal, we wouldn't have handed him over to you."

30Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος κακὸν ποιῶν οὐκ ἄν σοι παρεδώκαμεν αὐτόν

31Pilate told them, "You take him and try him according to your Law." The Jewish leaders told him, "It is not legal for us to put anyone to death."

31Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ Πιλᾶτος Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὑμῶν κρίνατε αὐτόν Εἶπον αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Ἡμῖν οὐκ ἔξεστιν ἀποκτεῖναι οὐδένα

32This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.

32ἵνα ὁ λόγος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ πληρωθῇ ὃν εἶπεν σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ ἤμελλεν ἀποθνήσκειν

33So Pilate went back into the governor's headquarters, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"

33Εἰσῆλθεν οὖν πάλιν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἐφώνησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Σὺ εἶ ὁ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων

34Jesus replied, "Are you asking this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about me?"

34Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Ἀπὸ* σεαυτοῦ* σὺ τοῦτο λέγεις ἢ ἄλλοι εἶπόν σοι περὶ ἐμοῦ

35Pilate replied, "I am not a Jew, am I? It is your own nation and high priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?"

35Ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πιλᾶτος Μήτι ἐγὼ Ἰουδαῖός εἰμι τὸ ἔθνος τὸ σὸν καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς παρέδωκάν σε ἐμοί τί ἐποίησας

36Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my servants would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But for now my kingdom is not from here."

36Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου εἰ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἦν ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμή οἱ ὑπηρέται ἄν «οἱ ἐμοὶ ἠγωνίζοντο» ἵνα μὴ παραδοθῶ τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις νῦν δὲ ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐντεῦθεν

37Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. I was born for this, and I came into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is committed to the truth listens to my voice."

37Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος Οὐκοῦν βασιλεὺς εἶ σύ Ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς Σὺ λέγεις ὅτι βασιλεύς εἰμι ἐγὼ εἰς τοῦτο γεγέννημαι καὶ εἰς τοῦτο ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα μαρτυρήσω τῇ ἀληθείᾳ πᾶς ὁ ὢν ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας ἀκούει μου τῆς φωνῆς

38Pilate asked him, "What is 'truth'?" and then he went out to the Jewish leaders again and told them, "I find no basis for a charge against him.

38Λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος Τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια Καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν πάλιν ἐξῆλθεν πρὸς τοὺς Ἰουδαίους καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἐγὼ οὐδεμίαν εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν

39But you have a custom that I release one person for you at Passover. Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?"

39ἔστιν δὲ συνήθεια ὑμῖν ἵνα ἕνα ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν ἐν τῷ πάσχα βούλεσθε οὖν ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων

40At this, they shouted out again, "Not this fellow, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.

40Ἐκραύγασαν οὖν πάλιν λέγοντες Μὴ τοῦτον ἀλλὰ τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἦν δὲ ὁ Βαραββᾶς λῃστής
