“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.1Τότε ὁμοιωθήσεται βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν δέκα παρθένοις αἵτινες λαβοῦσαι τὰς λαμπάδας ἑαυτῶν ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν τοῦ νυμφίου
Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish.2πέντε δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἦσαν μωραὶ καὶ πέντε φρόνιμοι
Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them,3αἱ γὰρ μωραὶ λαβοῦσαι τὰς λαμπάδας ‹αὐτῶν› οὐκ ἔλαβον μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἔλαιον
but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.4αἱ δὲ φρόνιμοι ἔλαβον ἔλαιον ἐν τοῖς ἀγγείοις μετὰ τῶν λαμπάδων ἑαυτῶν
But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.5χρονίζοντος δὲ τοῦ νυμφίου ἐνύσταξαν πᾶσαι καὶ ἐκάθευδον
“And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’6Μέσης δὲ νυκτὸς κραυγὴ γέγονεν Ἰδοὺ νυμφίος ἐξέρχεσθε εἰς ἀπάντησιν ‹αὐτοῦ›
Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.7Τότε ἠγέρθησαν πᾶσαι αἱ παρθένοι ἐκεῖναι καὶ ἐκόσμησαν τὰς λαμπάδας ἑαυτῶν
And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’8αἱ δὲ μωραὶ ταῖς φρονίμοις εἶπαν Δότε ἡμῖν ἐκ τοῦ ἐλαίου ὑμῶν ὅτι αἱ λαμπάδες ἡμῶν σβέννυνται
But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’9Ἀπεκρίθησαν δὲ αἱ φρόνιμοι λέγουσαι Μή¦Ποτε οὐ μὴ ἀρκέσῃ ἡμῖν καὶ ὑμῖν πορεύεσθε μᾶλλον πρὸς τοὺς πωλοῦντας καὶ ἀγοράσατε ἑαυταῖς
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.10Ἀπερχομένων δὲ αὐτῶν ἀγοράσαι ἦλθεν νυμφίος καὶ αἱ ἕτοιμοι εἰσῆλθον μετ’ αὐτοῦ εἰς τοὺς γάμους καὶ ἐκλείσθη θύρα
“Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’11Ὕστερον δὲ ἔρχονται καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ παρθένοι λέγουσαι Κύριε κύριε ἄνοιξον ἡμῖν
But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’12 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐκ οἶδα ὑμᾶς
“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.13Γρηγορεῖτε οὖν ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε τὴν ἡμέραν οὐδὲ τὴν ὥραν ⧼ἐν υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔρχεται⧽
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.14Ὥσπερ γὰρ ἄνθρωπος ἀποδημῶν ἐκάλεσεν τοὺς ἰδίους δούλους καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτοῖς τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ
And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.15καὶ μὲν ἔδωκεν πέντε τάλαντα δὲ δύο δὲ ἕν ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὴν ἰδίαν δύναμιν καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν Εὐθέως
Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.16Πορευθεὶς τὰ πέντε τάλαντα λαβὼν ἠργάσατο ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐκέρδησεν ἄλλα πέντε
And likewise he who had received two gained two more also.17ὡσαύτως τὰ δύο ἐκέρδησεν ἄλλα δύο
But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money.18 δὲ τὸ ἓν λαβὼν ἀπελθὼν ὤρυξεν γῆν καὶ ἔκρυψεν τὸ ἀργύριον τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ
After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.19Μετὰ δὲ πολὺν χρόνον ἔρχεται κύριος τῶν δούλων ἐκείνων καὶ συναίρει λόγον μετ’ αὐτῶν
“So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’20καὶ προσελθὼν τὰ πέντε τάλαντα λαβὼν προσήνεγκεν ἄλλα πέντε τάλαντα λέγων Κύριε πέντε τάλαντά μοι παρέδωκας ἴδε ἄλλα πέντε τάλαντα ἐκέρδησα
His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’21Ἔφη αὐτῷ κύριος αὐτοῦ Εὖ δοῦλε ἀγαθὲ καὶ πιστέ ἐπὶ ὀλίγα ἦς πιστός ἐπὶ πολλῶν σε καταστήσω εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν χαρὰν τοῦ κυρίου σου
He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’22Προσελθὼν ‹δὲ› καὶ τὰ δύο τάλαντα εἶπεν Κύριε δύο τάλαντά μοι παρέδωκας ἴδε ἄλλα δύο τάλαντα ἐκέρδησα
His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’23Ἔφη αὐτῷ κύριος αὐτοῦ Εὖ δοῦλε ἀγαθὲ καὶ πιστέ ἐπὶ ὀλίγα ἦς πιστός ἐπὶ πολλῶν σε καταστήσω εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν χαρὰν τοῦ κυρίου σου
“Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed.24Προσελθὼν δὲ καὶ τὸ ἓν τάλαντον εἰληφὼς εἶπεν Κύριε ἔγνων σε ὅτι σκληρὸς εἶ ἄνθρωπος θερίζων ὅπου οὐκ ἔσπειρας καὶ συνάγων ὅθεν οὐ διεσκόρπισας
And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’25καὶ φοβηθεὶς ἀπελθὼν ἔκρυψα τὸ τάλαντόν σου ἐν τῇ γῇ ἴδε ἔχεις τὸ σόν
“But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.26Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ κύριος αὐτοῦ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Πονηρὲ δοῦλε καὶ ὀκνηρέ ᾔδεις ὅτι θερίζω ὅπου οὐκ ἔσπειρα καὶ συνάγω ὅθεν οὐ διεσκόρπισα
So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.27ἔδει σε οὖν βαλεῖν τὰ ἀργύριά μου τοῖς τραπεζίταις καὶ ἐλθὼν ἐγὼ ἐκομισάμην ἂν τὸ ἐμὸν σὺν τόκῳ
So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.28Ἄρατε οὖν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὸ τάλαντον καὶ δότε τῷ ἔχοντι τὰ δέκα τάλαντα
‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.29τῷ γὰρ ἔχοντι παντὶ δοθήσεται καὶ περισσευθήσεται τοῦ δὲ μὴ ἔχοντος καὶ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ
And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’30καὶ τὸν ἀχρεῖον δοῦλον ἐκβάλετε εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον ἐκεῖ ἔσται κλαυθμὸς καὶ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.31Ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄγγελοι μετ’ αὐτοῦ τότε καθίσει ἐπὶ θρόνου δόξης αὐτοῦ
All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.32καὶ συναχθήσονται ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη καὶ ἀφορίσει αὐτοὺς ἀπ’ ἀλλήλων ὥσπερ ποιμὴν ἀφορίζει τὰ πρόβατα ἀπὸ τῶν ἐρίφων
And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.33καὶ στήσει τὰ μὲν πρόβατα ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ τὰ δὲ ἐρίφια ἐξ εὐωνύμων
Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:34Τότε ἐρεῖ Βασιλεὺς τοῖς ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ Δεῦτε οἱ εὐλογημένοι τοῦ Πατρός μου κληρονομήσατε τὴν ἡτοιμασμένην ὑμῖν βασιλείαν ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου
for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in;35ἐπείνασα γὰρ καὶ ἐδώκατέ μοι φαγεῖν ἐδίψησα καὶ ἐποτίσατέ με ξένος ἤμην καὶ συνηγάγετέ με
I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’36γυμνὸς καὶ περιεβάλετέ με ἠσθένησα καὶ ἐπεσκέψασθέ με ἐν φυλακῇ ἤμην καὶ ἤλθατε πρός με
“Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink?37Τότε ἀποκριθήσονται αὐτῷ οἱ δίκαιοι λέγοντες Κύριε πότε σε εἴδομεν πεινῶντα καὶ ἐθρέψαμεν διψῶντα καὶ ἐποτίσαμεν
When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?38πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ξένον καὶ συνηγάγομεν γυμνὸν καὶ περιεβάλομεν
Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’39πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ἀσθενοῦντα ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ ἤλθομεν πρός σε
And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’40Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Βασιλεὺς ἐρεῖ αὐτοῖς Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐφ’ ὅσον ἐποιήσατε ἑνὶ τούτων τῶν ἀδελφῶν μου τῶν ἐλαχίστων ἐμοὶ ἐποιήσατε
“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:41Τότε ἐρεῖ καὶ τοῖς ἐξ εὐωνύμων Πορεύεσθε ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ‹οἱ› κατηραμένοι εἰς τὸ πῦρ τὸ αἰώνιον τὸ ἡτοιμασμένον τῷ διαβόλῳ καὶ τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὐτοῦ
for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;42ἐπείνασα γὰρ καὶ οὐκ ἐδώκατέ μοι φαγεῖν (καὶ) ἐδίψησα καὶ οὐκ ἐποτίσατέ με
I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’43ξένος ἤμην καὶ οὐ συνηγάγετέ με γυμνὸς καὶ οὐ περιεβάλετέ με ἀσθενὴς καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ οὐκ ἐπεσκέψασθέ με
“Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’44Τότε ἀποκριθήσονται καὶ αὐτοὶ λέγοντες Κύριε πότε σε εἴδομεν πεινῶντα διψῶντα ξένον γυμνὸν ἀσθενῆ ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ οὐ διηκονήσαμέν σοι
Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’45Τότε ἀποκριθήσεται αὐτοῖς λέγων Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐφ’ ὅσον οὐκ ἐποιήσατε ἑνὶ τούτων τῶν ἐλαχίστων οὐδὲ ἐμοὶ ἐποιήσατε
And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”46Καὶ ἀπελεύσονται οὗτοι εἰς κόλασιν αἰώνιον οἱ δὲ δίκαιοι εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον
