Berean Interlinear Bible The Sermon on the Mount 1Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (then) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἀνέβη (He went up) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain); καὶ (and) καθίσαντος (having sat down) αὐτοῦ (of Him), προσῆλθαν (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him). 2καὶ (And) ἀνοίξας (opening) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐδίδασκεν (He was teaching) αὐτοὺς (them), λέγων (saying): The Beatitudes 3“Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) πτωχοὶ (poor) τῷ (in the) πνεύματι (spirit), Ὅτι (for) αὐτῶν (theirs) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). 4Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (those) πενθοῦντες (mourning), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) παρακληθήσονται (will be comforted). 5Μακάριοι (Blessed) οἱ (the) πραεῖς (meek), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth). 6Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (those) πεινῶντες (hungering) καὶ (and) διψῶντες (thirsting for) τὴν (-) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness); Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) χορτασθήσονται (will be filled). 7Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) ἐλεήμονες (merciful), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐλεηθήσονται (will receive mercy). 8Μακάριοι (Blessed) οἱ (the) καθαροὶ (pure) τῇ (-) καρδίᾳ (in heart), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ὄψονται (will see). 9Μακάριοι (Blessed) οἱ (the) εἰρηνοποιοί (peacemakers), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) υἱοὶ (sons) Θεοῦ (of God) κληθήσονται (will be called). 10Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (those) δεδιωγμένοι (having been persecuted) ἕνεκεν (on account of) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), Ὅτι (for) αὐτῶν (theirs) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). 11Μακάριοί (Blessed) ἐστε (are you) ὅταν (when) ὀνειδίσωσιν (they shall insult) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) διώξωσιν (shall persecute you), καὶ (and) εἴπωσιν (shall say) πᾶν (all kinds of) πονηρὸν (evil) καθ’ (against) ὑμῶν (you), ψευδόμενοι (lying) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me). 12χαίρετε (Rejoice) καὶ (and) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (exult), ὅτι (for) ὁ (the) μισθὸς (reward) ὑμῶν (of you) πολὺς (is great) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens); οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) τοὺς (-) πρὸ (before) ὑμῶν (you). Salt and Light 13Ὑμεῖς (You) ἐστε (are) τὸ (the) ἅλας (salt) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth); ἐὰν (if), δὲ (however), τὸ (the) ἅλας (salt) μωρανθῇ (becomes tasteless), ἐν (with) τίνι (what) ἁλισθήσεται (will it be salted). εἰς (For) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἰσχύει (it is potent) ἔτι (any longer), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) βληθὲν (having been cast) ἔξω (out), καταπατεῖσθαι (to be trampled upon) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men). 14Ὑμεῖς (You) ἐστε (are) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world). οὐ (Not) δύναται (is able) πόλις (a city) κρυβῆναι (to be hidden) ἐπάνω (on) ὄρους (a hill) κειμένη (lying). 15οὐδὲ (Nor) καίουσιν (do they light) λύχνον (a lamp) καὶ (and) τιθέασιν (put) αὐτὸν (it) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) μόδιον (a basket), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) λυχνίαν (lampstand), καὶ (and) λάμπει (it shines) πᾶσιν (for all) τοῖς (those) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house). 16οὕτως (Thus) λαμψάτω (let shine) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ὑμῶν (of you) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), ὅπως (so that) ἴδωσιν (they may see) ὑμῶν (your) τὰ (-) καλὰ (good) ἔργα (works), καὶ (and) δοξάσωσιν (they should glorify) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) τὸν (-) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens). The Fulfillment of the Law 17Μὴ (Not) νομίσητε (think) ὅτι (that) ἦλθον (I have come) καταλῦσαι (to abolish) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) ἢ (or) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (Prophets); οὐκ (not) ἦλθον (I have come) καταλῦσαι (to abolish), ἀλλὰ (but) πληρῶσαι (to fulfill). 18ἀμὴν (Truly) γὰρ (for) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) παρέλθῃ (shall pass away) ὁ (the) οὐρανὸς (heaven) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth), ἰῶτα (iota) ἓν (one), ἢ (or) μία (one) κεραία (stroke of a letter), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρέλθῃ (shall pass away) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) πάντα (everything) γένηται (should happen). 19Ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) οὖν (then) λύσῃ (shall break) μίαν (one) τῶν (of the) ἐντολῶν (commandments) τούτων (of these) τῶν (the) ἐλαχίστων (least) καὶ (and) διδάξῃ (shall teach) οὕτως (so) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (others), ἐλάχιστος (least) κληθήσεται (he will be called) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) ποιήσῃ (shall keep) καὶ (and) διδάξῃ (shall teach them), οὗτος (this one) μέγας (great) κληθήσεται (will be called) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). 20λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) περισσεύσῃ (shall abound) ὑμῶν (your) ἡ (-) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness) πλεῖον (above that) τῶν (of the) γραμματέων (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (shall you enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). Anger and Reconciliation 21Ἠκούσατε (You have heard) ὅτι (that) ἐρρέθη (it was said) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχαίοις (ancients), ‘Οὐ (Not) φονεύσεις (you shall murder); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) φονεύσῃ (shall murder), ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῇ (to the) κρίσει (judgment).’a 22ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὀργιζόμενος (being angry with) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him)b ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῇ (to the) κρίσει (judgment); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Ῥακά (Raca),’c ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῷ (to the) συνεδρίῳ (Sanhedrin); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say), ‘Μωρέ (Fool),’ ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γέενναν (hell) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire). 23Ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) προσφέρῃς (you shall offer) τὸ (the) δῶρόν (gift) σου (of you) ἐπὶ (at) τὸ (the) θυσιαστήριον (altar), κἀκεῖ (and there) μνησθῇς (shall remember) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) ἔχει (has) τι (something) κατὰ (against) σοῦ (you), 24ἄφες (leave) ἐκεῖ (there) τὸ (the) δῶρόν (gift) σου (of you) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar), καὶ (and) ὕπαγε (go away); πρῶτον (first) διαλλάγηθι (be reconciled) τῷ (to) ἀδελφῷ (brother) σου (of you); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ἐλθὼν (having come), πρόσφερε (offer) τὸ (the) δῶρόν (gift) σου (of you). 25ἴσθι (Be) εὐνοῶν (agreeing) τῷ (with) ἀντιδίκῳ (accuser) σου (of you) ταχὺ (quickly), ἕως (while) ὅτου (which) εἶ (you are) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him), ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way), μή‿ (lest) ποτέ (ever) σε (you) παραδῷ (deliver) ὁ (the) ἀντίδικος (accuser) τῷ (to the) κριτῇ (judge), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κριτὴς (judge) τῷ (to the) ὑπηρέτῃ (officer), καὶ (and) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison) βληθήσῃ (you will be cast). 26ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἐξέλθῃς (shall you come out) ἐκεῖθεν (from there), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἀποδῷς (you should pay) τὸν (the) ἔσχατον (last) κοδράντην (kodranten)!d Adultery 27Ἠκούσατε (You have heard) ὅτι (that) ἐρρέθη (it was said), ‘Οὐ (Not) μοιχεύσεις (shall you commit adultery).’e 28ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) βλέπων (looking upon) γυναῖκα (a woman) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) ἐπιθυμῆσαι (to lust after) αὐτὴν (her) ἤδη (already) ἐμοίχευσεν (has committed adultery with) αὐτὴν (her) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him). 29εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) ὀφθαλμός (eye) σου (of you) ὁ (-) δεξιὸς (right) σκανδαλίζει (causes to stumble) σε (you), ἔξελε (pluck out) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) βάλε (cast it) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you); συμφέρει (it is better) γάρ (indeed) σοι (for you) ἵνα (that) ἀπόληται (should perish) ἓν (one) τῶν (of the) μελῶν (members) σου (of you), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) σῶμά (body) σου (of you) βληθῇ (should be cast) εἰς (into) γέενναν (hell). 30καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ἡ (the) δεξιά (right) σου (of you) χεὶρ (hand) σκανδαλίζει (causes to stumble) σε (you), ἔκκοψον (cut off) αὐτὴν (it) καὶ (and) βάλε (cast it) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you); συμφέρει (it is better) γάρ (indeed) σοι (for you) ἵνα (that) ἀπόληται (should perish) ἓν (one) τῶν (of the) μελῶν (members) σου (of you), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) σῶμά (body) σου (of you) εἰς (into) γέενναν (hell) ἀπέλθῃ (should depart). Divorce 31Ἐρρέθη (It was said) δέ (also), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ἀπολύσῃ (shall divorce) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), δότω (let him give) αὐτῇ (to her) ἀποστάσιον (a letter of divorce).’f 32ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀπολύων (divorcing) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), παρεκτὸς (except) λόγου (on account) πορνείας (of sexual immorality), ποιεῖ (causes) αὐτὴν (her) μοιχευθῆναι (to commit adultery). καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) ἀπολελυμένην (her having been divorced) γαμήσῃ (shall marry), μοιχᾶται (commits adultery). Oaths and Vows 33Πάλιν (Again), ἠκούσατε (you have heard) ὅτι (that) ἐρρέθη (it was said) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχαίοις (ancients), ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιορκήσεις (shall you swear falsely); ἀποδώσεις (you shall keep) δὲ (now) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) τοὺς (the) ὅρκους (oaths) σου (of you).’ 34ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) μὴ (not) ὀμόσαι (to swear) ὅλως (at all): μήτε (neither) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), ὅτι (because) θρόνος (the throne) ἐστὶν (it is) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); 35μήτε (nor) ἐν (by) τῇ (the) γῇ (earth), ὅτι (because) ὑποπόδιόν (the footstool) ἐστιν (it is) τῶν (of the) ποδῶν (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him); μήτε (nor) εἰς (by) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), ὅτι (because) πόλις (the city) ἐστὶν (it is) τοῦ (of the) μεγάλου (great) Βασιλέως (King). 36μήτε (Neither) ἐν (by) τῇ (the) κεφαλῇ (head) σου (of you) ὀμόσῃς (shall you swear), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) δύνασαι (you are able) μίαν (one) τρίχα (hair) λευκὴν (white) ποιῆσαι (to make), ἢ (or) μέλαιναν (black). 37ἔστω (Let it be) δὲ (however) ὁ (the) λόγος (statement) ὑμῶν (of you), ‘Ναὶ (Yes),’ ναί (‘Yes),’ οὒ (and ‘No),’ ‘Οὔ (No).’ τὸ (The) δὲ (however) περισσὸν (more than) τούτων (these), ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil) ἐστιν (comes).g Love Your Enemies 38Ἠκούσατε (You have heard) ὅτι (that) ἐρρέθη (it was said), ‘Ὀφθαλμὸν (Eye) ἀντὶ (for) ὀφθαλμοῦ (eye), καὶ (and) ὀδόντα (tooth) ἀντὶ (for) ὀδόντος (tooth).’h 39ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you), μὴ (not) ἀντιστῆναι (to resist) τῷ (the) πονηρῷ (evil person). ἀλλ’ (Instead), ὅστις (whoever) σε (you) ῥαπίζει (shall strike) εἰς (on) τὴν (the) δεξιὰν (right) σιαγόνα (cheek) σου (of you), στρέψον (turn) αὐτῷ (to him) καὶ (also) τὴν (the) ἄλλην (other); 40καὶ (and) τῷ (to the one) θέλοντί (willing) σοι (you) κριθῆναι (to sue) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) χιτῶνά (tunic) σου (of you) λαβεῖν (to take), ἄφες (yield) αὐτῷ (to him) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) ἱμάτιον (cloak); 41καὶ (and) ὅστις (whoever) σε (you) ἀγγαρεύσει (shall compel to go) μίλιον (mile) ἕν (one), ὕπαγε (go) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) δύο (two). 42τῷ (To the one) αἰτοῦντί (asking of) σε (you), δός (give); καὶ (and) τὸν (the one) θέλοντα (desiring) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you) δανίσασθαι (to borrow), μὴ (not) ἀποστραφῇς (you shall turn away from). 43Ἠκούσατε (You have heard) ὅτι (that) ἐρρέθη (it was said), ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (-) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) καὶ (and) μισήσεις (shall hate) τὸν (-) ἐχθρόν (enemy) σου (of you).’i
44ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τοὺς (the) ἐχθροὺς (enemies) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (those) διωκόντων (persecuting) ὑμᾶς (you),j
45ὅπως (so that) γένησθε (you may be) υἱοὶ (sons) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens). ὅτι (For) τὸν (the) ἥλιον (sun) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀνατέλλει (He makes rise) ἐπὶ (on) πονηροὺς (evil) καὶ (and) ἀγαθοὺς (good), καὶ (and) βρέχει (He sends rain) ἐπὶ (on) δικαίους (righteous) καὶ (and) ἀδίκους (unrighteous).
46ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) ἀγαπήσητε (you love) τοὺς (those) ἀγαπῶντας (loving) ὑμᾶς (you), τίνα (what) μισθὸν (reward) ἔχετε (have you)? οὐχὶ (Do not) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) ποιοῦσιν (do)?
47καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) ἀσπάσησθε (you greet) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) ὑμῶν (of you) μόνον (only), τί (what) περισσὸν (extraordinary) ποιεῖτε (do you)? οὐχὶ (Do not) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἐθνικοὶ (Gentiles) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) ποιοῦσιν (do)?
