I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.1Λέγω οὖν μὴ ἀπώσατο Θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ μὴ γένοιτο καὶ γὰρ ἐγὼ Ἰσραηλίτης εἰμί ἐκ σπέρματος Ἀβραάμ φυλῆς Βενιαμίν
God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel?2οὐκ ἀπώσατο Θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ὃν προέγνω οὐκ οἴδατε ἐν Ἠλίᾳ τί λέγει γραφή ὡς ἐντυγχάνει τῷ Θεῷ κατὰ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.”3Κύριε τοὺς προφήτας σου ἀπέκτειναν τὰ θυσιαστήριά σου κατέσκαψαν κἀγὼ ὑπελείφθην μόνος καὶ ζητοῦσιν τὴν ψυχήν μου
But what is God’s reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”4Ἀλλὰ τί λέγει αὐτῷ χρηματισμός Κατέλιπον ἐμαυτῷ ἑπτακισχιλίους ἄνδρας οἵτινες οὐκ ἔκαμψαν γόνυ τῇ Βάαλ
So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.5Οὕτως οὖν καὶ ἐν τῷ νῦν καιρῷ λεῖμμα* κατ’ ἐκλογὴν χάριτος γέγονεν
But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.6εἰ δὲ χάριτι οὐκέτι ἐξ ἔργων ἐπεὶ χάρις οὐκέτι γίνεται χάρις ⧼Εἰ δὲ ἐξ ἔργων οὐκέτι ἐστὶν χάρις ἐπεὶ τὸ ἔργον οὐκέτι ἐστὶν ἔργον⧽
What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,7Τί οὖν ἐπιζητεῖ Ἰσραήλ τοῦτο οὐκ ἐπέτυχεν δὲ ἐκλογὴ ἐπέτυχεν οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ ἐπωρώθησαν
as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”8καθὼς* γέγραπται Ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς Θεὸς πνεῦμα κατανύξεως ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ μὴ βλέπειν καὶ ὦτα τοῦ μὴ ἀκούειν ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας
And David says, “Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them;9Καὶ Δαυὶδ λέγει Γενηθήτω τράπεζα αὐτῶν εἰς παγίδα καὶ εἰς θήραν καὶ εἰς σκάνδαλον καὶ εἰς ἀνταπόδομα αὐτοῖς
let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever.”10σκοτισθήτωσαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν τοῦ μὴ βλέπειν καὶ τὸν νῶτον αὐτῶν διὰ παντὸς σύνκαμψον
So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather, through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous.11Λέγω οὖν μὴ ἔπταισαν ἵνα πέσωσιν μὴ γένοιτο ἀλλὰ τῷ αὐτῶν παραπτώματι σωτηρία τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εἰς τὸ παραζηλῶσαι αὐτούς
Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!12εἰ δὲ τὸ παράπτωμα αὐτῶν πλοῦτος κόσμου καὶ τὸ ἥττημα αὐτῶν πλοῦτος ἐθνῶν πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῶν
Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry13Ὑμῖν δὲ λέγω τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐφ’ ὅσον μὲν οὖν εἰμι ἐγὼ ἐθνῶν ἀπόστολος τὴν διακονίαν μου δοξάζω
in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them.14εἴ πως παραζηλώσω μου τὴν σάρκα καὶ σώσω τινὰς ἐξ αὐτῶν
For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?15εἰ γὰρ ἀποβολὴ αὐτῶν καταλλαγὴ κόσμου τίς πρόσλημψις εἰ μὴ ζωὴ ἐκ νεκρῶν
If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.16εἰ δὲ ἀπαρχὴ ἁγία καὶ τὸ φύραμα καὶ εἰ ῥίζα ἁγία καὶ οἱ κλάδοι
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree,17Εἰ δέ τινες τῶν κλάδων ἐξεκλάσθησαν σὺ δὲ ἀγριέλαιος ὢν ἐνεκεντρίσθης ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ συνκοινωνὸς τῆς ῥίζης τῆς πιότητος τῆς ἐλαίας ἐγένου
do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.18μὴ κατακαυχῶ τῶν κλάδων εἰ δὲ κατακαυχᾶσαι οὐ σὺ τὴν ῥίζαν βαστάζεις ἀλλὰ ῥίζα σέ
Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”19Ἐρεῖς οὖν Ἐξεκλάσθησαν κλάδοι ἵνα ἐγὼ ἐγκεντρισθῶ
That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear.20καλῶς τῇ ἀπιστίᾳ ἐξεκλάσθησαν σὺ δὲ τῇ πίστει ἕστηκας μὴ ὑψηλὰ φρόνει ἀλλὰ φοβοῦ
For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.21εἰ γὰρ Θεὸς τῶν κατὰ φύσιν κλάδων οὐκ ἐφείσατο [μή πως] οὐδὲ σοῦ φείσεται
Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.22ἴδε οὖν χρηστότητα καὶ ἀποτομίαν Θεοῦ ἐπὶ μὲν τοὺς πεσόντας ἀποτομία ἐπὶ δὲ σὲ χρηστότης Θεοῦ ἐὰν ἐπιμένῃς τῇ χρηστότητι ἐπεὶ καὶ σὺ ἐκκοπήσῃ
And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.23κἀκεῖνοι δέ ἐὰν μὴ ἐπιμένωσιν τῇ ἀπιστίᾳ ἐνκεντρισθήσονται δυνατὸς γάρ ἐστιν Θεὸς πάλιν ἐνκεντρίσαι αὐτούς
For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.24εἰ γὰρ σὺ ἐκ τῆς κατὰ φύσιν ἐξεκόπης ἀγριελαίου καὶ παρὰ φύσιν ἐνεκεντρίσθης εἰς καλλιέλαιον πόσῳ μᾶλλον οὗτοι οἱ κατὰ φύσιν ἐνκεντρισθήσονται τῇ ἰδίᾳ ἐλαίᾳ
Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.25Οὐ γὰρ θέλω ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο ἵνα μὴ ἦτε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς φρόνιμοι ὅτι πώρωσις ἀπὸ μέρους τῷ Ἰσραὴλ γέγονεν ἄχρι οὗ τὸ πλήρωμα τῶν ἐθνῶν εἰσέλθῃ
And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;26καὶ οὕτως πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ σωθήσεται καθὼς γέγραπται Ἥξει ἐκ Σιὼν Ῥυόμενος ἀποστρέψει ἀσεβείας ἀπὸ Ἰακώβ
“and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.”27καὶ αὕτη αὐτοῖς παρ’ ἐμοῦ διαθήκη ὅταν ἀφέλωμαι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν
As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.28Κατὰ μὲν τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ἐχθροὶ δι’ ὑμᾶς κατὰ δὲ τὴν ἐκλογὴν ἀγαπητοὶ διὰ τοὺς πατέρας
For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.29ἀμεταμέλητα γὰρ τὰ χαρίσματα καὶ κλῆσις τοῦ Θεοῦ
For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience,30Ὥσπερ γὰρ ὑμεῖς ποτε ἠπειθήσατε τῷ Θεῷ νῦν δὲ ἠλεήθητε τῇ τούτων ἀπειθείᾳ
so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy.31οὕτως καὶ οὗτοι νῦν ἠπείθησαν τῷ ὑμετέρῳ ἐλέει ἵνα καὶ αὐτοὶ νῦν ἐλεηθῶσιν
For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.32συνέκλεισεν γὰρ Θεὸς τοὺς πάντας εἰς ἀπείθειαν ἵνα τοὺς πάντας ἐλεήσῃ
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!33 βάθος πλούτου καὶ σοφίας καὶ γνώσεως Θεοῦ ὡς ἀνεξεραύνητα τὰ κρίματα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνεξιχνίαστοι αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτοῦ
“For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?”34Τίς γὰρ ἔγνω νοῦν Κυρίου τίς σύμβουλος αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο
“Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”35 τίς προέδωκεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἀνταποδοθήσεται αὐτῷ
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.36ὅτι ἐξ αὐτοῦ καὶ δι’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς αὐτὸν τὰ πάντα αὐτῷ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας ἀμήν
