Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias),1Μετὰ ταῦτα ἀπῆλθεν Ἰησοῦς πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης τῆς Γαλιλαίας τῆς Τιβεριάδος
and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.2ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς ὅτι ἐθεώρουν* τὰ σημεῖα ἐποίει ἐπὶ τῶν ἀσθενούντων
Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.3ἀνῆλθεν δὲ εἰς τὸ ὄρος Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἐκεῖ ἐκάθητο μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ
The Jewish Passover Festival was near.4Ἦν δὲ ἐγγὺς τὸ πάσχα ἑορτὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων
When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?"5ἐπάρας οὖν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος ὅτι πολὺς ὄχλος ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγει πρὸς Φίλιππον Πόθεν ἀγοράσωμεν ἄρτους ἵνα φάγωσιν οὗτοι
He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.6τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγεν πειράζων αὐτόν αὐτὸς γὰρ ᾔδει τί ἔμελλεν ποιεῖν
Philip answered him, "It would take more than half a year's wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!"7Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Φίλιππος Διακοσίων δηναρίων ἄρτοι οὐκ ἀρκοῦσιν αὐτοῖς ἵνα ἕκαστος βραχύ τι λάβῃ
Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up,8Λέγει αὐτῷ εἷς ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ Ἀνδρέας ἀδελφὸς Σίμωνος Πέτρου
"Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"9Ἔστιν παιδάριον ὧδε ὃς ἔχει πέντε ἄρτους κριθίνους καὶ δύο ὀψάρια ἀλλὰ ταῦτα τί ἐστιν εἰς τοσούτους
Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).10Εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς Ποιήσατε τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἀναπεσεῖν ἦν δὲ χόρτος πολὺς ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ἀνέπεσαν οὖν οἱ ἄνδρες τὸν ἀριθμὸν ὡς πεντακισχίλιοι
Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.11Ἔλαβεν οὖν τοὺς ἄρτους Ἰησοῦς καὶ εὐχαριστήσας διέδωκεν τοῖς ἀνακειμένοις ὁμοίως καὶ ἐκ τῶν ὀψαρίων ὅσον ἤθελον
When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."12Ὡς δὲ ἐνεπλήσθησαν λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Συναγάγετε τὰ περισσεύσαντα κλάσματα ἵνα μή τι ἀπόληται
So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.13συνήγαγον οὖν καὶ ἐγέμισαν δώδεκα κοφίνους κλασμάτων ἐκ τῶν πέντε ἄρτων τῶν κριθίνων ἐπερίσσευσαν τοῖς βεβρωκόσιν
After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world."14Οἱ οὖν ἄνθρωποι ἰδόντες ἐποίησεν σημεῖον ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς προφήτης ἐρχόμενος εἰς τὸν κόσμον
Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.15Ἰησοῦς οὖν γνοὺς ὅτι μέλλουσιν ἔρχεσθαι καὶ ἁρπάζειν αὐτὸν ἵνα ποιήσωσιν βασιλέα ἀνεχώρησεν πάλιν εἰς τὸ ὄρος αὐτὸς μόνος
When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,16Ὡς δὲ ὀψία ἐγένετο κατέβησαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν
where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.17καὶ ἐμβάντες εἰς πλοῖον ἤρχοντο πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης εἰς Καφαρναούμ καὶ σκοτία ἤδη ἐγεγόνει καὶ οὔπω ἐληλύθει πρὸς αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς
A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.18 τε θάλασσα ἀνέμου μεγάλου πνέοντος διεγείρετο
When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.19Ἐληλακότες οὖν ὡς σταδίους εἴκοσι πέντε τριάκοντα θεωροῦσιν τὸν Ἰησοῦν περιπατοῦντα ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ ἐγγὺς τοῦ πλοίου γινόμενον καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν
But he said to them, "It is I; don't be afraid."20 δὲ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἐγώ εἰμι μὴ φοβεῖσθε
Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.21ἤθελον οὖν λαβεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ εὐθέως ἐγένετο τὸ πλοῖον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἰς ἣν ὑπῆγον
The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.22Τῇ ἐπαύριον ὄχλος ἑστηκὼς πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης εἶδον ὅτι πλοιάριον ἄλλο οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖ εἰ μὴ ἕν καὶ ὅτι οὐ συνεισῆλθεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἀλλὰ μόνοι οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθον
Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.23ἀλλὰ ἦλθεν πλοιάρια ἐκ Τιβεριάδος ἐγγὺς τοῦ τόπου ὅπου ἔφαγον τὸν ἄρτον εὐχαριστήσαντος τοῦ Κυρίου
Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.24ὅτε οὖν εἶδεν ὄχλος ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκεῖ οὐδὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἐνέβησαν αὐτοὶ εἰς τὰ πλοιάρια καὶ ἦλθον εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ ζητοῦντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν
When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"25καὶ εὑρόντες αὐτὸν πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης εἶπον αὐτῷ Ῥαββί πότε ὧδε γέγονας
Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.26Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ζητεῖτέ με οὐχ ὅτι εἴδετε σημεῖα ἀλλ’ ὅτι ἐφάγετε ἐκ τῶν ἄρτων καὶ ἐχορτάσθητε
Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."27ἐργάζεσθε μὴ τὴν βρῶσιν τὴν ἀπολλυμένην ἀλλὰ τὴν βρῶσιν τὴν μένουσαν εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἣν Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὑμῖν δώσει τοῦτον γὰρ Πατὴρ ἐσφράγισεν Θεός
Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"28Εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτόν Τί ποιῶμεν ἵνα ἐργαζώμεθα τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ
Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."29Ἀπεκρίθη ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ ἔργον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἵνα πιστεύητε εἰς ὃν ἀπέστειλεν ἐκεῖνος
So they asked him, "What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?30Εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ Τί οὖν ποιεῖς σὺ σημεῖον ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ πιστεύσωμέν σοι τί ἐργάζῃ
Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"31οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν τὸ μάννα ἔφαγον ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καθώς ἐστιν γεγραμμένον Ἄρτον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς φαγεῖν
Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.32Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὸν ἄρτον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀλλ’ Πατήρ μου δίδωσιν ὑμῖν τὸν ἄρτον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ τὸν ἀληθινόν
For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."33 γὰρ ἄρτος τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν καταβαίνων ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ζωὴν διδοὺς τῷ κόσμῳ
"Sir," they said, "always give us this bread."34Εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτόν Κύριε πάντοτε δὸς ἡμῖν τὸν ἄρτον τοῦτον
Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.35Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἐγώ εἰμι ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς ἐρχόμενος πρὸς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ πεινάσῃ καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ διψήσει πώποτε
But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.36ἀλλ’ εἶπον ὑμῖν ὅτι καὶ ἑωράκατέ με καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε
All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.37Πᾶν δίδωσίν μοι Πατὴρ πρὸς ἐμὲ ἥξει καὶ τὸν ἐρχόμενον πρός με οὐ μὴ ἐκβάλω ἔξω
For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.38ὅτι καταβέβηκα ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ οὐχ ἵνα ποιῶ τὸ θέλημα τὸ ἐμὸν ἀλλὰ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με
And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.39Τοῦτο δέ ἐστιν τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με ἵνα πᾶν δέδωκέν μοι μὴ ἀπολέσω ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἀλλὰ ἀναστήσω αὐτὸ ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day."40τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Πατρός μου ἵνα πᾶς θεωρῶν τὸν Υἱὸν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον καὶ ἀναστήσω αὐτὸν ἐγὼ ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven."41Ἐγόγγυζον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι εἶπεν Ἐγώ εἰμι ἄρτος καταβὰς ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ
They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?"42καὶ ἔλεγον Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰησοῦς υἱὸς Ἰωσήφ οὗ ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα πῶς νῦν λέγει ὅτι Ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβέβηκα
"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered.43Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Μὴ γογγύζετε μετ’ ἀλλήλων
"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.44οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐλθεῖν πρός με ἐὰν μὴ Πατὴρ πέμψας με ἑλκύσῃ αὐτόν κἀγὼ ἀναστήσω αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.45ἔστιν γεγραμμένον ἐν τοῖς προφήταις Καὶ ἔσονται πάντες διδακτοὶ Θεοῦ πᾶς ἀκούσας παρὰ τοῦ Πατρὸς καὶ μαθὼν ἔρχεται πρὸς ἐμέ
No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.46οὐχ ὅτι τὸν Πατέρα ἑώρακέν τις εἰ μὴ ὢν παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὗτος ἑώρακεν τὸν Πατέρα
Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.47Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν πιστεύων ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον
I am the bread of life.48ἐγώ εἰμι ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς
Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.49οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ἔφαγον ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τὸ μάννα καὶ ἀπέθανον
But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.50οὗτός ἐστιν ἄρτος ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβαίνων ἵνα τις ἐξ αὐτοῦ φάγῃ καὶ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."51ἐγώ εἰμι ἄρτος ζῶν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβάς ἐάν τις φάγῃ ἐκ τούτου τοῦ ἄρτου ζήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ ἄρτος δὲ ὃν ἐγὼ δώσω σάρξ μού ἐστιν ὑπὲρ τῆς τοῦ κόσμου ζωῆς
Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"52Ἐμάχοντο οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες Πῶς δύναται οὗτος ἡμῖν δοῦναι τὴν σάρκα ‹αὐτοῦ› φαγεῖν
Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.53Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐὰν μὴ φάγητε τὴν σάρκα τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ πίητε αὐτοῦ τὸ αἷμα οὐκ ἔχετε ζωὴν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.54 τρώγων μου τὴν σάρκα καὶ πίνων μου τὸ αἷμα ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον κἀγὼ ἀναστήσω αὐτὸν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.55 γὰρ σάρξ μου ἀληθής ἐστιν βρῶσις καὶ τὸ αἷμά μου ἀληθής ἐστιν πόσις
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.56 τρώγων μου τὴν σάρκα καὶ πίνων μου τὸ αἷμα ἐν ἐμοὶ μένει κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ
Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.57καθὼς ἀπέστειλέν με ζῶν Πατὴρ κἀγὼ ζῶ διὰ τὸν Πατέρα καὶ τρώγων με κἀκεῖνος ζήσει δι’ ἐμέ
This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever."58οὗτός ἐστιν ἄρτος ἐξ οὐρανοῦ καταβάς οὐ καθὼς ἔφαγον οἱ πατέρες καὶ ἀπέθανον τρώγων τοῦτον τὸν ἄρτον ζήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα
He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.59Ταῦτα εἶπεν ἐν συναγωγῇ διδάσκων ἐν Καφαρναούμ
On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?"60Πολλοὶ οὖν ἀκούσαντες ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ εἶπαν Σκληρός ἐστιν λόγος οὗτος τίς δύναται αὐτοῦ ἀκούειν
Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you?61Εἰδὼς δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐν ἑαυτῷ ὅτι γογγύζουσιν περὶ τούτου οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τοῦτο ὑμᾶς σκανδαλίζει
Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before!62ἐὰν οὖν θεωρῆτε τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀναβαίνοντα ὅπου ἦν τὸ πρότερον
The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life.63Τὸ πνεῦμά ἐστιν τὸ ζωοποιοῦν σὰρξ οὐκ ὠφελεῖ οὐδέν τὰ ῥήματα ἐγὼ λελάληκα ὑμῖν πνεῦμά ἐστιν καὶ ζωή ἐστιν
Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.64ἀλλ’ εἰσὶν ἐξ ὑμῶν τινες οἳ οὐ πιστεύουσιν ᾔδει γὰρ ἐξ ἀρχῆς Ἰησοῦς τίνες εἰσὶν οἱ μὴ πιστεύοντες καὶ τίς ἐστιν παραδώσων αὐτόν
He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them."65Καὶ ἔλεγεν Διὰ τοῦτο εἴρηκα ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐλθεῖν πρός με ἐὰν μὴ δεδομένον αὐτῷ ἐκ τοῦ Πατρός
From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.66Ἐκ τούτου πολλοὶ ‹ἐκ› τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθον εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω καὶ οὐκέτι μετ’ αὐτοῦ περιεπάτουν
"You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve.67εἶπεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς τοῖς δώδεκα Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε ὑπάγειν
Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.68Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Σίμων Πέτρος Κύριε πρὸς τίνα ἀπελευσόμεθα ῥήματα ζωῆς αἰωνίου ἔχεις
We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God."69καὶ ἡμεῖς πεπιστεύκαμεν καὶ ἐγνώκαμεν ὅτι σὺ εἶ Ἅγιος τοῦ Θεοῦ
Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!"70Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Οὐκ ἐγὼ ὑμᾶς τοὺς δώδεκα ἐξελεξάμην καὶ ἐξ ὑμῶν εἷς διάβολός ἐστιν
(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)71ἔλεγεν δὲ τὸν Ἰούδαν Σίμωνος Ἰσκαριώτου οὗτος γὰρ ἔμελλεν παραδιδόναι αὐτόν εἷς ἐκ τῶν δώδεκα
