1 On one occasion, while Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret with the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God, On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.
2 He saw two boats at the edge of the lake. The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing <i>their</i> nets. and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.
3 Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon and asked him to put out a little from shore. And sitting down, He taught the people from the boat. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little <i>distance</i> from the land. And He sat down and <i>continued</i> teaching the crowds from the boat. 5 “Master, Simon replied, “we have worked hard all night without catching anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets. And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. Simon responded and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say <i>and</i> let down the nets.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to tear. And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And when they had done this, they caught a great quantity of fish, and their nets <i>began</i> to tear; When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 10 and so were his partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee. “Do not be afraid, Jesus said to Simon. “From now on you will catch men. and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And so <i>was</i> also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. and likewise also <i>were</i> James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear; from now on you will be catching people.” and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”
11 And when they had brought their boats ashore, they left everything and followed Him. And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. While He was in one of the cities, behold, <i>there was</i> a man covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing, He said. “Be clean! And immediately the leprosy left him. And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. And he put forth <i>his</i> hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. And He reached out with His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 “Do not tell anyone, Jesus instructed him. “But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. And He ordered him to tell no one, <i>saying,</i> “But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 But the news about Jesus spread all the more, and great crowds came to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities. But the news about Him was spreading <i>even</i> farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear <i>Him</i> and to be healed of their sicknesses. Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
16 Yet He frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray. But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray. And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed. But <i>Jesus</i> Himself would <i>often</i> slip away to the wilderness and pray. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
17 One day Jesus was teaching, and the Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. People had come from Jerusalem and from every village of Galilee and Judea, and the power of the Lord was present for Him to heal the sick. On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with him to heal. And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was <i>present</i> to heal them. One day He was teaching, and there were <i>some</i> Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting <i>there</i> who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and <i>from</i> Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was <i>present</i> for Him to perform healing. One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.
18 Just then some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They tried to bring him inside to set him before Jesus, And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought <i>means</i> to bring him in, and to lay <i>him</i> before him. And <i>some</i> men <i>were</i> carrying a man on a stretcher who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.
19 but they could not find a way through the crowd. So they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus. but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. And when they could not find by what <i>way</i> they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with <i>his</i> couch into the midst before Jesus. But when they did not find any <i>way</i> to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle <i>of the crowd,</i> in front of Jesus. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven. And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And seeing their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
21 But the scribes and Pharisees began thinking to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone? And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? The scribes and the Pharisees began thinking of the implications, saying, “Who is this <i>man</i> who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, except God alone?” The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
22 Knowing what they were thinking, Jesus replied, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, responded and said to them, “Why are you thinking this way in your hearts? Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?
23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven, or to say, ‘Get up and walk? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? Which is easier, to say: ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to forgive sins... He said to the paralytic, “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home. But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher, and go home.” But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
25 And immediately the man stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.
26 Everyone was taken with amazement and glorified God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today. And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.” And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day. And they were all struck with astonishment and <i>began</i> glorifying God. They were also filled with fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today!” Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me, He told him, After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. After that He went out and looked at a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him,
28 and Levi got up, left everything, and followed Him. And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. And he left all, rose up, and followed him. And he left everything behind, and got up and <i>began</i> following Him. and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.
29 Then Levi hosted a great banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors was there, along with others who were eating with them. And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and other <i>people</i> who were reclining <i>at the table</i> with them. Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.
30 But the Pharisees and their scribes complained to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? The Pharisees and their scribes <i>began</i> grumbling to His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?” But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
31 Jesus answered, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. And Jesus answered and said to them, “<i>It is</i> not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.” I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
33 Then they said to Him, “John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees frequently fast and pray, but Yours keep on eating and drinking. And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise <i>the disciples</i> of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink? And they said to Him, “The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the <i>disciples</i> of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink.” They said to him, “John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus replied, “ Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? And Jesus said to them, “You cannot make the attendants of the groom fast while the groom is with them, can you? Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?
35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. But <i>the</i> days will come; and when the groom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.”
36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will tear the new garment as well, and the patch from the new will not match the old. He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was <i>taken</i> out of the new agreeth not with the old. And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the patch from the new <i>garment</i> will not match the old. He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will spill, and the wineskins will be ruined. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
38 Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.
39 And no one after drinking old wine wants new, for he says, ‘The old is better. And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’” No man also having drunk old <i>wine</i> straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better. And no one, after drinking old <i>wine</i> wants new; for he says, ‘The old is fine.’” And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
