After getting into a boat, Jesus crossed to the other side and came to his own city.
All at once some people brought him a paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he told the paralyzed man, "Be courageous, son! Your sins are forgiven."2Καὶ ἰδοὺ προσέφερον αὐτῷ παραλυτικὸν ἐπὶ κλίνης βεβλημένον καὶ ἰδὼν Ἰησοῦς τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν εἶπεν τῷ παραλυτικῷ Θάρσει τέκνον ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι
Then some of the scribes told themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!"3Καὶ ἰδού τινες τῶν γραμματέων εἶπαν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς Οὗτος βλασφημεῖ
But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking, replied, "Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts? 4Καὶ εἰδὼς Ἰησοῦς τὰς ἐνθυμήσεις αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἵνα‿ τί ἐνθυμεῖσθε πονηρὰ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν
Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? 5τί γάρ ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον εἰπεῖν Ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι εἰπεῖν Ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτει
But so you will know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…" he told the paralyzed man, "Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home!"6ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχει Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας τότε λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ Ἐγερθεὶς* ἆρόν σου τὴν κλίνην καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου
So the man got up and went home.
When the crowds saw this, they became frightened and glorified God for giving such authority to humans.8Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ ὄχλοι ἐφοβήθησαν καὶ ἐδόξασαν τὸν Θεὸν τὸν δόντα ἐξουσίαν τοιαύτην τοῖς ἀνθρώποις
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's desk and told him, "Follow me." So he got up and followed him.9Καὶ παράγων Ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖθεν εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον καθήμενον ἐπὶ τὸ τελώνιον Μαθθαῖον λεγόμενον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἀκολούθει μοι καὶ ἀναστὰς ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ
While he was having dinner at Matthew's home, many tax collectors and sinners arrived and began eating with Jesus and his disciples.
The Pharisees saw this and asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"11καὶ ἰδόντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἔλεγον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Διὰ τί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίει διδάσκαλος ὑμῶν
When Jesus heard that, he said, "Healthy people don't need a physician, but sick people do. 12 δὲ ἀκούσας εἶπεν Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ἰσχύοντες ἰατροῦ ἀλλ’ οἱ κακῶς ἔχοντες
Go and learn what this means: 'I want mercy and not sacrifice,' because I did not come to call righteous people, but sinners."13πορευθέντες δὲ μάθετε τί ἐστιν Ἔλεος θέλω καὶ οὐ θυσίαν οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον καλέσαι δικαίους ἀλλὰ ἁμαρτωλούς
Then John's disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don't fast?"14Τότε προσέρχονται αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου λέγοντες Διὰ τί ἡμεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι νηστεύομεν ‹πολλά› οἱ δὲ μαθηταί σου οὐ νηστεύουσιν
Jesus asked them, "The wedding guests can't mourn as long as the groom is with them, can they? But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast."15Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος πενθεῖν ἐφ’ ὅσον μετ’ αὐτῶν ἐστιν νυμφίος ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν νυμφίος καὶ τότε νηστεύσουσιν
"No one patches an old garment with a piece of unshrunk cloth, because the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. 16Οὐδεὶς δὲ ἐπιβάλλει ἐπίβλημα ῥάκους ἀγνάφου ἐπὶ ἱματίῳ παλαιῷ αἴρει γὰρ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἱματίου καὶ χεῖρον σχίσμα γίνεται
Nor do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will spill out, and the skins will be ruined. Instead, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved."17Οὐδὲ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς εἰ δὲ μή¦γε ῥήγνυνται οἱ ἀσκοί καὶ οἶνος ἐκχεῖται καὶ οἱ ἀσκοὶ ἀπόλλυνται ἀλλὰ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς καινούς καὶ ἀμφότεροι συντηροῦνται
While Jesus was telling them these things, an official came up and fell down before him. "My daughter has just died," he said. "But come and lay your hand on her, and she will live." 18Ταῦτα αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος αὐτοῖς ἰδοὺ ἄρχων εἷς ἐλθὼν* προσεκύνει αὐτῷ λέγων ὅτι θυγάτηρ μου ἄρτι ἐτελεύτησεν ἀλλὰ ἐλθὼν ἐπίθες τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπ’ αὐτήν καὶ ζήσεται
So Jesus got up and followed him, along with his disciples.19Καὶ ἐγερθεὶς Ἰησοῦς ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ
Just then a woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel of his garment, 20Καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ αἱμορροοῦσα δώδεκα ἔτη προσελθοῦσα ὄπισθεν ἥψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ
because she had been saying to herself, "If I just touch his robe, I will get well."21ἔλεγεν γὰρ ἐν ἑαυτῇ Ἐὰν μόνον ἅψωμαι τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ σωθήσομαι
When Jesus turned and saw her, he said, "Be courageous, daughter! Your faith has made you well." And from that very hour the woman was well.22 δὲ Ἰησοῦς στραφεὶς καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν εἶπεν Θάρσει θύγατερ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε καὶ ἐσώθη γυνὴ ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης
When Jesus came to the official's house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 23Καὶ ἐλθὼν Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἄρχοντος καὶ ἰδὼν τοὺς αὐλητὰς καὶ τὸν ὄχλον θορυβούμενον
he said, "Go away! The young lady hasn't died, but is sleeping." But they ridiculed him with laughter.
When the crowd had been driven outside, he went in, took her by the hand, and the young lady got up. 25Ὅτε δὲ ἐξεβλήθη ὄχλος εἰσελθὼν ἐκράτησεν τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς καὶ ἠγέρθη τὸ κοράσιον
The news of this spread throughout that land.26καὶ ἐξῆλθεν φήμη αὕτη εἰς ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἐκείνην
As Jesus was traveling on from there, two blind men followed him, shouting, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" 27Καὶ παράγοντι ἐκεῖθεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἠκολούθησαν ‹αὐτῷ› δύο τυφλοὶ κράζοντες καὶ λέγοντες Ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς υἱὸς Δαυίδ
When he had gone into the house, the blind men came to him. Jesus asked them, "Do you believe I can do this?" They told him, "Yes, Lord!" 28Ἐλθόντι δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ τυφλοί καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Πιστεύετε ὅτι δύναμαι τοῦτο ποιῆσαι Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ναί Κύριε
Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith, let it be done for you!" 29Τότε ἥψατο τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν λέγων Κατὰ τὴν πίστιν ὑμῶν γενηθήτω ὑμῖν
And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus sternly told them, "See to it that nobody knows about this." 30καὶ ἠνεῴχθησαν αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοί καὶ ἐνεβριμήθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς λέγων Ὁρᾶτε μηδεὶς γινωσκέτω
But they went out and spread the news about him throughout that region.31οἱ δὲ ἐξελθόντες διεφήμισαν αὐτὸν ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ γῇ ἐκείνῃ
As the men were going out, a man who couldn't talk because he was demon-possessed was brought to him.
As soon as the demon had been driven out, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!"33καὶ ἐκβληθέντος τοῦ δαιμονίου ἐλάλησεν κωφός καὶ ἐθαύμασαν οἱ ὄχλοι λέγοντες Οὐδέποτε ἐφάνη οὕτως ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ
But the Pharisees kept saying, "He drives out demons by the ruler of demons." 34Οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἔλεγον Ἐν τῷ ἄρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια
Then Jesus began traveling throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every illness.
When he saw the crowds, he was deeply moved with compassion for them, because they were troubled and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.36Ἰδὼν δὲ τοὺς ὄχλους ἐσπλαγχνίσθη περὶ αὐτῶν ὅτι ἦσαν ἐσκυλμένοι καὶ ἐρριμμένοι ὡσεὶ πρόβατα μὴ ἔχοντα ποιμένα
Then he told his disciples, "The harvest is vast, but the workers are few. 37Τότε λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ μὲν θερισμὸς πολύς οἱ δὲ ἐργάται ὀλίγοι
So ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest."38δεήθητε οὖν τοῦ Κυρίου τοῦ θερισμοῦ ὅπως ἐκβάλῃ ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν θερισμὸν αὐτοῦ
