English Standard VersionGreek Study Bible
And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.1Καὶ ἐμβὰς εἰς πλοῖον διεπέρασεν καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν ἰδίαν πόλιν
And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”2Καὶ ἰδοὺ προσέφερον αὐτῷ παραλυτικὸν ἐπὶ κλίνης βεβλημένον καὶ ἰδὼν Ἰησοῦς τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν εἶπεν τῷ παραλυτικῷ Θάρσει τέκνον ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι
And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.”3Καὶ ἰδού τινες τῶν γραμματέων εἶπαν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς Οὗτος βλασφημεῖ
But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?4Καὶ εἰδὼς Ἰησοῦς τὰς ἐνθυμήσεις αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἵνα‿ τί ἐνθυμεῖσθε πονηρὰ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν
For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?5τί γάρ ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον εἰπεῖν Ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι εἰπεῖν Ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτει
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic— “Rise, pick up your bed and go home.”6ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχει Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας τότε λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ Ἐγερθεὶς* ἆρόν σου τὴν κλίνην καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου
And he rose and went home.7καὶ ἐγερθεὶς ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ
When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.8Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ ὄχλοι ἐφοβήθησαν καὶ ἐδόξασαν τὸν Θεὸν τὸν δόντα ἐξουσίαν τοιαύτην τοῖς ἀνθρώποις
As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.9Καὶ παράγων Ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖθεν εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον καθήμενον ἐπὶ τὸ τελώνιον Μαθθαῖον λεγόμενον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἀκολούθει μοι καὶ ἀναστὰς ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ
And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.10Καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτοῦ ἀνακειμένου ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ καὶ ἰδοὺ πολλοὶ τελῶναι καὶ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἐλθόντες συνανέκειντο τῷ Ἰησοῦ καὶ τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ
And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”11καὶ ἰδόντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἔλεγον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Διὰ τί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίει διδάσκαλος ὑμῶν
But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.12 δὲ ἀκούσας εἶπεν Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ἰσχύοντες ἰατροῦ ἀλλ’ οἱ κακῶς ἔχοντες
Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”13πορευθέντες δὲ μάθετε τί ἐστιν Ἔλεος θέλω καὶ οὐ θυσίαν οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον καλέσαι δικαίους ἀλλὰ ἁμαρτωλούς
Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”14Τότε προσέρχονται αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου λέγοντες Διὰ τί ἡμεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι νηστεύομεν ‹πολλά› οἱ δὲ μαθηταί σου οὐ νηστεύουσιν
And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.15Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος πενθεῖν ἐφ’ ὅσον μετ’ αὐτῶν ἐστιν νυμφίος ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν νυμφίος καὶ τότε νηστεύσουσιν
No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made.16Οὐδεὶς δὲ ἐπιβάλλει ἐπίβλημα ῥάκους ἀγνάφου ἐπὶ ἱματίῳ παλαιῷ αἴρει γὰρ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἱματίου καὶ χεῖρον σχίσμα γίνεται
Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”17Οὐδὲ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς εἰ δὲ μή¦γε ῥήγνυνται οἱ ἀσκοί καὶ οἶνος ἐκχεῖται καὶ οἱ ἀσκοὶ ἀπόλλυνται ἀλλὰ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς καινούς καὶ ἀμφότεροι συντηροῦνται
While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”18Ταῦτα αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος αὐτοῖς ἰδοὺ ἄρχων εἷς ἐλθὼν* προσεκύνει αὐτῷ λέγων ὅτι θυγάτηρ μου ἄρτι ἐτελεύτησεν ἀλλὰ ἐλθὼν ἐπίθες τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπ’ αὐτήν καὶ ζήσεται
And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples.19Καὶ ἐγερθεὶς Ἰησοῦς ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ
And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment,20Καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ αἱμορροοῦσα δώδεκα ἔτη προσελθοῦσα ὄπισθεν ἥψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ
for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.”21ἔλεγεν γὰρ ἐν ἑαυτῇ Ἐὰν μόνον ἅψωμαι τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ σωθήσομαι
Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.22 δὲ Ἰησοῦς στραφεὶς καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν εἶπεν Θάρσει θύγατερ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε καὶ ἐσώθη γυνὴ ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης
And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,23Καὶ ἐλθὼν Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἄρχοντος καὶ ἰδὼν τοὺς αὐλητὰς καὶ τὸν ὄχλον θορυβούμενον
he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him.24ἔλεγεν Ἀναχωρεῖτε οὐ γὰρ ἀπέθανεν τὸ κοράσιον ἀλλὰ καθεύδει καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ
But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.25Ὅτε δὲ ἐξεβλήθη ὄχλος εἰσελθὼν ἐκράτησεν τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς καὶ ἠγέρθη τὸ κοράσιον
And the report of this went through all that district.26καὶ ἐξῆλθεν φήμη αὕτη εἰς ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἐκείνην
And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.”27Καὶ παράγοντι ἐκεῖθεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἠκολούθησαν ‹αὐτῷ› δύο τυφλοὶ κράζοντες καὶ λέγοντες Ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς υἱὸς Δαυίδ
When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.”28Ἐλθόντι δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ τυφλοί καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Πιστεύετε ὅτι δύναμαι τοῦτο ποιῆσαι Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ναί Κύριε
Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.”29Τότε ἥψατο τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν λέγων Κατὰ τὴν πίστιν ὑμῶν γενηθήτω ὑμῖν
And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.”30καὶ ἠνεῴχθησαν αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοί καὶ ἐνεβριμήθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς λέγων Ὁρᾶτε μηδεὶς γινωσκέτω
But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.31οἱ δὲ ἐξελθόντες διεφήμισαν αὐτὸν ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ γῇ ἐκείνῃ
As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him.32Αὐτῶν δὲ ἐξερχομένων ἰδοὺ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ ‹ἄνθρωπον› κωφὸν δαιμονιζόμενον
And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.”33καὶ ἐκβληθέντος τοῦ δαιμονίου ἐλάλησεν κωφός καὶ ἐθαύμασαν οἱ ὄχλοι λέγοντες Οὐδέποτε ἐφάνη οὕτως ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ
But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”34Οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἔλεγον Ἐν τῷ ἄρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια
And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.35Καὶ περιῆγεν Ἰησοῦς τὰς πόλεις πάσας καὶ τὰς κώμας διδάσκων ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν καὶ κηρύσσων τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς βασιλείας καὶ θεραπεύων πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ πᾶσαν μαλακίαν
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.36Ἰδὼν δὲ τοὺς ὄχλους ἐσπλαγχνίσθη περὶ αὐτῶν ὅτι ἦσαν ἐσκυλμένοι καὶ ἐρριμμένοι ὡσεὶ πρόβατα μὴ ἔχοντα ποιμένα
Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;37Τότε λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ μὲν θερισμὸς πολύς οἱ δὲ ἐργάται ὀλίγοι
therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”38δεήθητε οὖν τοῦ Κυρίου τοῦ θερισμοῦ ὅπως ἐκβάλῃ ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν θερισμὸν αὐτοῦ
