Jesus Anointed by Mary

(Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.1Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.1Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.1Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.1Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, the one Jesus had raised from the dead.
Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.2So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table.2So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.2There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.2So they gave a dinner for Him there; Martha was serving them, and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.
Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.3Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.3Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.3Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.3Then Mary took a pound of fragrant oil--pure and expensive nard--anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped His feet with her hair. So the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said,4But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said,4Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,4Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray Him), said, "

"Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages."5“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”5"Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people?"5Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?5Why wasn't this fragrant oil sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?"
He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.6He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.6Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it.6This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.6He didn't say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.
"Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.7Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial.7Therefore Jesus said, "Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial.7Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.7Jesus answered, "Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of My burial.
You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."8For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”8"For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me."8For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.8For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me."

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.9When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.9The large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead.9Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.9Then a large crowd of the Jews learned He was there. They came not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus the one He had raised from the dead.
So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,10So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well,10But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also;10But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;10Therefore the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus also
for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.11Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.11because he was the reason many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

(Zechariah 9:9-13; Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40)

The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.12The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.12On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,12On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,12The next day, when the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the king of Israel!"13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”13took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, "Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, even the King of Israel."13Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.13they took palm branches and went out to meet Him. They kept shouting: "Hosanna! He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One--the King of Israel!"
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:14And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,14Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written,14And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,14Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written:
"Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."15“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”15"FEAR NOT, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING, SEATED ON A DONKEY'S COLT."15Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.15Fear no more, Daughter Zion. Look, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt.

At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.16These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him.16These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.16His disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.17The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness.17So the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him.17The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.17Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify.
Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him.18The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.18For this reason also the people went and met Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign.18For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.18This is also why the crowd met Him, because they heard He had done this sign.
So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”19So the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him."19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.19Then the Pharisees said to one another, "You see? You've accomplished nothing. Look--the world has gone after Him!"

Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.24"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.24Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.24"I assure you: Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces a large crop.
Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.25Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.25"He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.25He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.25The one who loves his life will lose it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.26If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.26"If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.26If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.26If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me. Where I am, there My servant also will be. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
"Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.27“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.27"Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour '? But for this purpose I came to this hour.27Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.27"Now My soul is troubled. What should I say--Father, save Me from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour.
Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."28Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”28"Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again."28Father, glorify thy name. 29The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.29The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”29So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, "An angel has spoken to Him."29The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.29The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him.

He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.33He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.33But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.33This he said, signifying what death he should die.33He said this to signify what kind of death He was about to die.

The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?"34So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”34The crowd then answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?"34The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?34Then the crowd replied to Him, "We have heard from the scripture that the Messiah will remain forever. So how can You say, The Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?"
Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.35So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.35So Jesus said to them, "For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.35Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.35Jesus answered, "The light will be with you only a little longer. Walk while you have the light so that darkness doesn't overtake you. The one who walks in darkness doesn't know where he's going.
Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.36While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.36"While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light." These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them.36While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.36While you have the light, believe in the light so that you may become sons of light." Jesus said this, then went away and hid from them.

The Unbelief of the People

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.37Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him,37But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him.37But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:37Even though He had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in Him.
This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"38so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke: "LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT? AND TO WHOM HAS THE ARM OF THE LORD BEEN REVEALED?"38That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?38But this was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet, who said: Lord, who has believed our message? And who has the arm of the Lord been revealed to?
For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:39Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said,39For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again,39Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,39This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said:
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them."40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.”40"HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HE HARDENED THEIR HEART, SO THAT THEY WOULD NOT SEE WITH THEIR EYES AND PERCEIVE WITH THEIR HEART, AND BE CONVERTED AND I HEAL THEM."40He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.40He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they would not see with their eyes or understand with their hearts, and be converted, and I would heal them.
Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him.41Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him.41These things Isaiah said because he saw His glory, and he spoke of Him.41These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.41Isaiah said these things because he saw His glory and spoke about Him.

Some Believe in Jesus

Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;42Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue;42Nevertheless many even of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue;42Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:42Nevertheless, many did believe in Him even among the rulers, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, so they would not be banned from the synagogue.
for they loved human praise more than praise from God.43for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.43for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.43For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.43For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
Then Jesus cried out, "Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.44And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me.44And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in Me, does not believe in Me but in Him who sent Me.44Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.44Then Jesus cried out, "The one who believes in Me believes not in Me, but in Him who sent Me.
The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.45And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.45"He who sees Me sees the One who sent Me.45And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.45And the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.

I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.46I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.46"I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.46I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.46I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me would not remain in darkness.
"If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.47If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.47"If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.47And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.47If anyone hears My words and doesn't keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.48The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.48"He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.48He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.48The one who rejects Me and doesn't accept My sayings has this as his judge: The word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.49For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak.49"For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.49For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.49For I have not spoken on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a command as to what I should say and what I should speak.
I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."50And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”50"I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me."50And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.50I know that His command is eternal life. So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me."
