1When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain and sat down. His disciples came to Him, 1Ἰδὼν δὲ τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος καὶ καθίσαντος αὐτοῦ προσῆλθαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ
2and He began to teach them, saying: 2καὶ ἀνοίξας τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοὺς λέγων
3“Blessed [are] the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 3Μακάριοι οἱ πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι Ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
4Blessed [are] those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 4Μακάριοι οἱ πενθοῦντες Ὅτι αὐτοὶ παρακληθήσονται
5Blessed [are] the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 5Μακάριοι οἱ πραεῖς Ὅτι αὐτοὶ κληρονομήσουσιν τὴν γῆν
6Blessed [are] those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 6Μακάριοι οἱ πεινῶντες καὶ διψῶντες τὴν δικαιοσύνην Ὅτι αὐτοὶ χορτασθήσονται
7Blessed [are] the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 7Μακάριοι οἱ ἐλεήμονες Ὅτι αὐτοὶ ἐλεηθήσονται
8Blessed [are] the pure in heart, for they will see God. 8Μακάριοι οἱ καθαροὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ Ὅτι αὐτοὶ τὸν Θεὸν ὄψονται
9Blessed [are] the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. 9Μακάριοι οἱ εἰρηνοποιοί Ὅτι αὐτοὶ υἱοὶ Θεοῦ κληθήσονται
10Blessed [are] those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 10Μακάριοι οἱ δεδιωγμένοι ἕνεκεν δικαιοσύνης Ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
11Blessed are you when [people] insult you, persecute [you], and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 11Μακάριοί ἐστε ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ διώξωσιν καὶ εἴπωσιν πᾶν πονηρὸν καθ’ ὑμῶν ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ
12Rejoice and celebrate, because great [is] your reward in heaven; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you. 12χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε ὅτι ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς οὕτως γὰρ ἐδίωξαν τοὺς προφήτας τοὺς πρὸ ὑμῶν
13You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for [anything], except to be thrown out [and] trampled by men. 13Ὑμεῖς ἐστε τὸ ἅλας τῆς γῆς ἐὰν δὲ τὸ ἅλας μωρανθῇ ἐν τίνι ἁλισθήσεται εἰς οὐδὲν ἰσχύει ἔτι εἰ μὴ βληθὲν ἔξω καταπατεῖσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων
14You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 14Ὑμεῖς ἐστε τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου οὐ δύναται πόλις κρυβῆναι ἐπάνω ὄρους κειμένη
15Neither do [people] light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, [they set it] on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 15οὐδὲ καίουσιν λύχνον καὶ τιθέασιν αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν καὶ λάμπει πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ
16In the same way, {let} your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. 16οὕτως λαμψάτω τὸ φῶς ὑμῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὅπως ἴδωσιν ὑμῶν τὰ καλὰ ἔργα καὶ δοξάσωσιν τὸν πατέρα ὑμῶν τὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
17{Do} not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish [them], but to fulfill [them]. 17Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον καταλῦσαι τὸν νόμον ἢ τοὺς προφήτας οὐκ ἦλθον καταλῦσαι ἀλλὰ πληρῶσαι
18For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 18ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν ἕως ἂν παρέλθῃ ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ ἰῶτα ἓν ἢ μία κεραία οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου ἕως ἂν πάντα γένηται
19So then, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do likewise will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches [them] will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 19Ὃς ἐὰν οὖν λύσῃ μίαν τῶν ἐντολῶν τούτων τῶν ἐλαχίστων καὶ διδάξῃ οὕτως τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἐλάχιστος κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν ὃς δ’ ἂν ποιήσῃ καὶ διδάξῃ οὗτος μέγας κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν
20For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 20λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ περισσεύσῃ ὑμῶν ἡ δικαιοσύνη πλεῖον τῶν γραμματέων καὶ Φαρισαίων οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν
21You have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 21Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη τοῖς ἀρχαίοις Οὐ φονεύσεις ὃς δ’ ἂν φονεύσῃ ἔνοχος ἔσται τῇ κρίσει
22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to the fire of hell. 22ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὀργιζόμενος τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ ἔνοχος ἔσται τῇ κρίσει ὃς δ’ ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ Ῥακά ἔνοχος ἔσται τῷ συνεδρίῳ ὃς δ’ ἂν εἴπῃ Μωρέ ἔνοχος ἔσται εἰς τὴν γέενναν τοῦ πυρός
23Therefore if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 23Ἐὰν οὖν προσφέρῃς τὸ δῶρόν σου ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον κἀκεῖ μνησθῇς ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἔχει τι κατὰ σοῦ
24leave your gift there before the altar. First go [and] be reconciled to your brother; then come [and] offer your gift. 24ἄφες ἐκεῖ τὸ δῶρόν σου ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ ὕπαγε πρῶτον διαλλάγηθι τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου καὶ τότε ἐλθὼν πρόσφερε τὸ δῶρόν σου
25Reconcile quickly with your adversary, while you are still on the way [to court]. Otherwise [he] may hand you over to the judge, and the judge [may hand you over] to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 25ἴσθι εὐνοῶν τῷ ἀντιδίκῳ σου ταχὺ ἕως ὅτου εἶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ μή‿ ποτέ σε παραδῷ ὁ ἀντίδικος τῷ κριτῇ καὶ ὁ κριτὴς τῷ ὑπηρέτῃ καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν βληθήσῃ
26Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. 26ἀμὴν λέγω σοι οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃς ἐκεῖθεν ἕως ἂν ἀποδῷς τὸν ἔσχατον κοδράντην
27You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 27Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη Οὐ μοιχεύσεις
28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her {has} already committed adultery with her in his heart. 28ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ βλέπων γυναῖκα πρὸς τὸ ἐπιθυμῆσαι αὐτὴν ἤδη ἐμοίχευσεν αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ
29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw [it] away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body [than for] your whole body to be thrown into hell. 29εἰ δὲ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου ὁ δεξιὸς σκανδαλίζει σε ἔξελε αὐτὸν καὶ βάλε ἀπὸ σοῦ συμφέρει γάρ σοι ἵνα ἀπόληται ἓν τῶν μελῶν σου καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου βληθῇ εἰς γέενναν
30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw [it] away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body [than for] your whole body to depart into hell. 30καὶ εἰ ἡ δεξιά σου χεὶρ σκανδαλίζει σε ἔκκοψον αὐτὴν καὶ βάλε ἀπὸ σοῦ συμφέρει γάρ σοι ἵνα ἀπόληται ἓν τῶν μελῶν σου καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου εἰς γέενναν ἀπέλθῃ
31It has also been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ 31Ἐρρέθη δέ Ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ δότω αὐτῇ ἀποστάσιον
32But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, brings adultery upon her. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 32ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ἀπολύων τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ παρεκτὸς λόγου πορνείας ποιεῖ αὐτὴν μοιχευθῆναι καὶ ὃς ἐὰν ἀπολελυμένην γαμήσῃ μοιχᾶται
33Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.’ 33Πάλιν ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη τοῖς ἀρχαίοις Οὐκ ἐπιορκήσεις ἀποδώσεις δὲ τῷ Κυρίῳ τοὺς ὅρκους σου
34But I tell you not to swear at all: [either] by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 34ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ ὀμόσαι ὅλως μήτε ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ὅτι θρόνος ἐστὶν τοῦ Θεοῦ
35[or] by the earth, for it is His footstool; [or] by Jerusalem, for it is [the] city of the great King. 35μήτε ἐν τῇ γῇ ὅτι ὑποπόδιόν ἐστιν τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ μήτε εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ὅτι πόλις ἐστὶν τοῦ μεγάλου Βασιλέως
36Nor should you swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. 36μήτε ἐν τῇ κεφαλῇ σου ὀμόσῃς ὅτι οὐ δύνασαι μίαν τρίχα λευκὴν ποιῆσαι ἢ μέλαιναν
37Simply let your ‘Yes’ [be] ‘Yes,’ [and your] ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything more comes from the evil [one]. 37ἔστω δὲ ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν Ναὶ ναί οὒ Οὔ τὸ δὲ περισσὸν τούτων ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ ἐστιν
38You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’ 38Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη Ὀφθαλμὸν ἀντὶ ὀφθαλμοῦ καὶ ὀδόντα ἀντὶ ὀδόντος
39But I tell you not to resist an evil [person]. [If] someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also; 39ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ ἀντιστῆναι τῷ πονηρῷ ἀλλ’ ὅστις σε ῥαπίζει εἰς τὴν δεξιὰν σιαγόνα σου στρέψον αὐτῷ καὶ τὴν ἄλλην
40if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have [your] cloak as well; 40καὶ τῷ θέλοντί σοι κριθῆναι καὶ τὸν χιτῶνά σου λαβεῖν ἄφες αὐτῷ καὶ τὸ ἱμάτιον
41and if someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 41καὶ ὅστις σε ἀγγαρεύσει μίλιον ἕν ὕπαγε μετ’ αὐτοῦ δύο
42Give to the [one] who asks you, and do not turn away from the [one] who wants to borrow from you. 42τῷ αἰτοῦντί σε δός καὶ τὸν θέλοντα ἀπὸ σοῦ δανίσασθαι μὴ ἀποστραφῇς
43You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 43Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου καὶ μισήσεις τὸν ἐχθρόν σου
44But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 44ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν καὶ προσεύχεσθε ὑπὲρ τῶν διωκόντων ὑμᾶς ⧼εὐλογεῖτε τοὺς καταρωμένους ὑμᾶς καλῶς ποιεῖτε τοῖς ἐπηρεαζόντων ὑμᾶς καὶ μισοῦσιν ὑμᾶς⧽
45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun {to rise} on [the] evil and [the] good, and sends rain on [the] righteous and [the] unrighteous. 45ὅπως γένησθε υἱοὶ τοῦ Πατρὸς ὑμῶν τοῦ ἐν οὐρανοῖς ὅτι τὸν ἥλιον αὐτοῦ ἀνατέλλει ἐπὶ πονηροὺς καὶ ἀγαθοὺς καὶ βρέχει ἐπὶ δικαίους καὶ ἀδίκους
46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even tax collectors do the same? 46ἐὰν γὰρ ἀγαπήσητε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς τίνα μισθὸν ἔχετε οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ τελῶναι τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν
47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even Gentiles do the same? 47καὶ ἐὰν ἀσπάσησθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν μόνον τί περισσὸν ποιεῖτε οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ ἐθνικοὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν
48Be perfect, therefore, as your Heavenly Father is perfect. 48Ἔσεσθε οὖν ὑμεῖς τέλειοι ὡς ὁ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος τέλειός ἐστιν
