English Standard VersionGreek Study Bible
Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.1Ἰδὼν δὲ τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος καὶ καθίσαντος αὐτοῦ προσῆλθαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ
And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:2καὶ ἀνοίξας τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοὺς λέγων
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.3Μακάριοι οἱ πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι Ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.4Μακάριοι οἱ πενθοῦντες Ὅτι αὐτοὶ παρακληθήσονται
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.5Μακάριοι οἱ πραεῖς Ὅτι αὐτοὶ κληρονομήσουσιν τὴν γῆν
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.6Μακάριοι οἱ πεινῶντες καὶ διψῶντες τὴν δικαιοσύνην Ὅτι αὐτοὶ χορτασθήσονται
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.7Μακάριοι οἱ ἐλεήμονες Ὅτι αὐτοὶ ἐλεηθήσονται
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.8Μακάριοι οἱ καθαροὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ Ὅτι αὐτοὶ τὸν Θεὸν ὄψονται
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.9Μακάριοι οἱ εἰρηνοποιοί Ὅτι αὐτοὶ υἱοὶ Θεοῦ κληθήσονται
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.10Μακάριοι οἱ δεδιωγμένοι ἕνεκεν δικαιοσύνης Ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.11Μακάριοί ἐστε ὅταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ διώξωσιν καὶ εἴπωσιν πᾶν πονηρὸν καθ’ ὑμῶν ψευδόμενοι ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.12χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε ὅτι μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς οὕτως γὰρ ἐδίωξαν τοὺς προφήτας τοὺς πρὸ ὑμῶν
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.13Ὑμεῖς ἐστε τὸ ἅλας τῆς γῆς ἐὰν δὲ τὸ ἅλας μωρανθῇ ἐν τίνι ἁλισθήσεται εἰς οὐδὲν ἰσχύει ἔτι εἰ μὴ βληθὲν ἔξω καταπατεῖσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.14Ὑμεῖς ἐστε τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου οὐ δύναται πόλις κρυβῆναι ἐπάνω ὄρους κειμένη
Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.15οὐδὲ καίουσιν λύχνον καὶ τιθέασιν αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν καὶ λάμπει πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.16οὕτως λαμψάτω τὸ φῶς ὑμῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὅπως ἴδωσιν ὑμῶν τὰ καλὰ ἔργα καὶ δοξάσωσιν τὸν πατέρα ὑμῶν τὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.17Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον καταλῦσαι τὸν νόμον τοὺς προφήτας οὐκ ἦλθον καταλῦσαι ἀλλὰ πληρῶσαι
For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.18ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν ἕως ἂν παρέλθῃ οὐρανὸς καὶ γῆ ἰῶτα ἓν μία κεραία οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου ἕως ἂν πάντα γένηται
Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.19Ὃς ἐὰν οὖν λύσῃ μίαν τῶν ἐντολῶν τούτων τῶν ἐλαχίστων καὶ διδάξῃ οὕτως τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἐλάχιστος κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν ὃς δ’ ἂν ποιήσῃ καὶ διδάξῃ οὗτος μέγας κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν
For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.20λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ περισσεύσῃ ὑμῶν δικαιοσύνη πλεῖον τῶν γραμματέων καὶ Φαρισαίων οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’21Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη τοῖς ἀρχαίοις Οὐ φονεύσεις ὃς δ’ ἂν φονεύσῃ ἔνοχος ἔσται τῇ κρίσει
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.22ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὀργιζόμενος τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ ἔνοχος ἔσται τῇ κρίσει ὃς δ’ ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ Ῥακά ἔνοχος ἔσται τῷ συνεδρίῳ ὃς δ’ ἂν εἴπῃ Μωρέ ἔνοχος ἔσται εἰς τὴν γέενναν τοῦ πυρός
So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,23Ἐὰν οὖν προσφέρῃς τὸ δῶρόν σου ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον κἀκεῖ μνησθῇς ὅτι ἀδελφός σου ἔχει τι κατὰ σοῦ
leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.24ἄφες ἐκεῖ τὸ δῶρόν σου ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ ὕπαγε πρῶτον διαλλάγηθι τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου καὶ τότε ἐλθὼν πρόσφερε τὸ δῶρόν σου
Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.25ἴσθι εὐνοῶν τῷ ἀντιδίκῳ σου ταχὺ ἕως ὅτου εἶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ μή‿ ποτέ σε παραδῷ ἀντίδικος τῷ κριτῇ καὶ κριτὴς τῷ ὑπηρέτῃ καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν βληθήσῃ
Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.26ἀμὴν λέγω σοι οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃς ἐκεῖθεν ἕως ἂν ἀποδῷς τὸν ἔσχατον κοδράντην
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’27Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη Οὐ μοιχεύσεις
But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.28ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς βλέπων γυναῖκα πρὸς τὸ ἐπιθυμῆσαι αὐτὴν ἤδη ἐμοίχευσεν αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ
If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.29εἰ δὲ ὀφθαλμός σου δεξιὸς σκανδαλίζει σε ἔξελε αὐτὸν καὶ βάλε ἀπὸ σοῦ συμφέρει γάρ σοι ἵνα ἀπόληται ἓν τῶν μελῶν σου καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου βληθῇ εἰς γέενναν
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.30καὶ εἰ δεξιά σου χεὶρ σκανδαλίζει σε ἔκκοψον αὐτὴν καὶ βάλε ἀπὸ σοῦ συμφέρει γάρ σοι ἵνα ἀπόληται ἓν τῶν μελῶν σου καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου εἰς γέενναν ἀπέλθῃ
“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’31Ἐρρέθη δέ Ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ δότω αὐτῇ ἀποστάσιον
But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.32ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ἀπολύων τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ παρεκτὸς λόγου πορνείας ποιεῖ αὐτὴν μοιχευθῆναι καὶ ὃς ἐὰν ἀπολελυμένην γαμήσῃ μοιχᾶται
“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’33Πάλιν ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη τοῖς ἀρχαίοις Οὐκ ἐπιορκήσεις ἀποδώσεις δὲ τῷ Κυρίῳ τοὺς ὅρκους σου
But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,34ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ ὀμόσαι ὅλως μήτε ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ὅτι θρόνος ἐστὶν τοῦ Θεοῦ
or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.35μήτε ἐν τῇ γῇ ὅτι ὑποπόδιόν ἐστιν τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ μήτε εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ὅτι πόλις ἐστὶν τοῦ μεγάλου Βασιλέως
And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.36μήτε ἐν τῇ κεφαλῇ σου ὀμόσῃς ὅτι οὐ δύνασαι μίαν τρίχα λευκὴν ποιῆσαι μέλαιναν
Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.37ἔστω δὲ λόγος ὑμῶν Ναὶ ναί οὒ Οὔ τὸ δὲ περισσὸν τούτων ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ ἐστιν
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’38Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη Ὀφθαλμὸν ἀντὶ ὀφθαλμοῦ καὶ ὀδόντα ἀντὶ ὀδόντος
But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.39ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ ἀντιστῆναι τῷ πονηρῷ ἀλλ’ ὅστις σε ῥαπίζει εἰς τὴν δεξιὰν σιαγόνα σου στρέψον αὐτῷ καὶ τὴν ἄλλην
And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.40καὶ τῷ θέλοντί σοι κριθῆναι καὶ τὸν χιτῶνά σου λαβεῖν ἄφες αὐτῷ καὶ τὸ ἱμάτιον
And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.41καὶ ὅστις σε ἀγγαρεύσει μίλιον ἕν ὕπαγε μετ’ αὐτοῦ δύο
Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.42τῷ αἰτοῦντί σε δός καὶ τὸν θέλοντα ἀπὸ σοῦ δανίσασθαι μὴ ἀποστραφῇς
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’43Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου καὶ μισήσεις τὸν ἐχθρόν σου
But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,44ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν καὶ προσεύχεσθε ὑπὲρ τῶν διωκόντων ὑμᾶς ⧼εὐλογεῖτε τοὺς καταρωμένους ὑμᾶς καλῶς ποιεῖτε τοῖς ἐπηρεαζόντων ὑμᾶς καὶ μισοῦσιν ὑμᾶς⧽
so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.45ὅπως γένησθε υἱοὶ τοῦ Πατρὸς ὑμῶν τοῦ ἐν οὐρανοῖς ὅτι τὸν ἥλιον αὐτοῦ ἀνατέλλει ἐπὶ πονηροὺς καὶ ἀγαθοὺς καὶ βρέχει ἐπὶ δικαίους καὶ ἀδίκους
For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?46ἐὰν γὰρ ἀγαπήσητε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς τίνα μισθὸν ἔχετε οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ τελῶναι τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν
And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?47καὶ ἐὰν ἀσπάσησθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν μόνον τί περισσὸν ποιεῖτε οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ ἐθνικοὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν
You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.48Ἔσεσθε οὖν ὑμεῖς τέλειοι ὡς Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος τέλειός ἐστιν
