Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was winning and baptizing more disciples than John1Ὡς οὖν ἔγνω Ἰησοῦς* ὅτι ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὅτι Ἰησοῦς πλείονας μαθητὰς ποιεῖ καὶ βαπτίζει Ἰωάννης
(although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were),2καίτοιγε Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς οὐκ ἐβάπτιζεν ἀλλ’ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ
he left Judea and set out once more for Galilee. 3ἀφῆκεν τὴν Ἰουδαίαν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
But he had to pass through Samaria.4Ἔδει δὲ αὐτὸν διέρχεσθαι διὰ τῆς Σαμαρείας
Now he came to a Samaritan town called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.5ἔρχεται οὖν εἰς πόλιν τῆς Σαμαρείας λεγομένην Συχὰρ πλησίον τοῦ χωρίου ἔδωκεν Ἰακὼβ ‹τῷ› Ἰωσὴφ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ
Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, since he was tired from the journey, sat right down beside the well. It was about noon.
A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me some water to drink."7Ἔρχεται γυνὴ ἐκ τῆς Σαμαρείας ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Δός μοι πεῖν
(For his disciples had gone off into the town to buy supplies.)8οἱ γὰρ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπεληλύθεισαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἵνα τροφὰς ἀγοράσωσιν
So the Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you--a Jew--ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water to drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)
Jesus answered her, "If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, 'Give me some water to drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."10Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Εἰ ᾔδεις τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τίς ἐστιν λέγων σοι Δός μοι πεῖν σὺ ἂν ᾔτησας αὐτὸν καὶ ἔδωκεν ἄν σοι ὕδωρ ζῶν
"Sir," the woman said to him, "you have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do you get this living water?11Λέγει αὐτῷ ‹ἡ γυνή› Κύριε οὔτε ἄντλημα ἔχεις καὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἐστὶν βαθύ πόθεν οὖν ἔχεις τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ ζῶν
Surely you're not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock." 12μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰακώβ ὃς ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν τὸ φρέαρ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔπιεν καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ θρέμματα αὐτοῦ
Jesus replied, "Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again.13Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Πᾶς πίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος τούτου διψήσει πάλιν
But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life."14ὃς δ’ ἂν πίῃ ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος οὗ ἐγὼ δώσω αὐτῷ οὐ μὴ διψήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἀλλὰ τὸ ὕδωρ δώσω αὐτῷ γενήσεται ἐν αὐτῷ πηγὴ ὕδατος ἁλλομένου εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον
The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water."15Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν γυνή Κύριε δός μοι τοῦτο τὸ ὕδωρ ἵνα μὴ διψῶ μηδὲ διέρχωμαι ἐνθάδε ἀντλεῖν
He said to her, "Go call your husband and come back here."16Λέγει αὐτῇ Ὕπαγε φώνησον τὸν ἄνδρα σου καὶ ἐλθὲ ἐνθάδε
The woman replied, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "Right you are when you said, 'I have no husband,'17Ἀπεκρίθη γυνὴ καὶ εἶπεν ‹αὐτῷ› Οὐκ ἔχω ἄνδρα Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Καλῶς εἶπας* ὅτι Ἄνδρα οὐκ ἔχω
for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!" 18πέντε γὰρ ἄνδρας ἔσχες καὶ νῦν ὃν ἔχεις οὐκ ἔστιν σου ἀνήρ τοῦτο ἀληθὲς εἴρηκας
The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet.19Λέγει αὐτῷ γυνή Κύριε θεωρῶ ὅτι προφήτης εἶ σύ
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you people say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."20οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ προσεκύνησαν καὶ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐστὶν τόπος ὅπου προσκυνεῖν δεῖ
Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.21Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Πίστευέ μοι γύναι ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὔτε ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ οὔτε ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις προσκυνήσετε τῷ Πατρί
You people worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.22ὑμεῖς προσκυνεῖτε οὐκ οἴδατε ἡμεῖς προσκυνοῦμεν οἴδαμεν ὅτι σωτηρία ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐστίν
But a time is coming--and now is here--when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.23ἀλλὰ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν ὅτε οἱ ἀληθινοὶ προσκυνηταὶ προσκυνήσουσιν τῷ Πατρὶ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ καὶ γὰρ Πατὴρ τοιούτους ζητεῖ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν
God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."24Πνεῦμα Θεός καὶ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας ‹αὐτὸν› ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν
The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (the one called Christ); "whenever he comes, he will tell us everything."25Λέγει αὐτῷ γυνή Οἶδα ὅτι Μεσσίας ἔρχεται λεγόμενος Χριστός ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος ἀναγγελεῖ ἡμῖν ἅπαντα
Jesus said to her, "I, the one speaking to you, am he." 26Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Ἐγώ εἰμι λαλῶν σοι
Now at that very moment his disciples came back. They were shocked because he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, "What do you want?" or "Why are you speaking with her?"27Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἶπεν Τί ζητεῖς Τί λαλεῖς μετ’ αὐτῆς
Then the woman left her water jar, went off into the town and said to the people,28Ἀφῆκεν οὖν τὴν ὑδρίαν αὐτῆς γυνὴ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἀνθρώποις
"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Surely he can't be the Messiah, can he?"29Δεῦτε ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον ὃς εἶπέν μοι πάντα ὅσα* ἐποίησα μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν Χριστός
So they left the town and began coming to him. 30ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτόν
Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, eat something."31Ἐν τῷ μεταξὺ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Ῥαββί φάγε
But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."32 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγὼ βρῶσιν ἔχω φαγεῖν ἣν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε
So the disciples began to say to one another, "No one brought him anything to eat, did they?"33Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους Μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν
Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work.34Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἐμὸν βρῶμά ἐστιν ἵνα ποιήσω* τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με καὶ τελειώσω αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔργον
Don't you say, 'There are four more months and then comes the harvest?' I tell you, look up and see that the fields are already white for harvest!35οὐχ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Ἔτι τετράμηνός ἐστιν καὶ θερισμὸς ἔρχεται ἰδοὺ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐπάρατε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ θεάσασθε τὰς χώρας ὅτι λευκαί εἰσιν πρὸς θερισμόν ἤδη
The one who reaps receives pay and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together.36 θερίζων μισθὸν λαμβάνει καὶ συνάγει καρπὸν εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἵνα σπείρων ὁμοῦ χαίρῃ καὶ θερίζων
For in this instance the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.'37ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ λόγος ἐστὶν ἀληθινὸς ὅτι Ἄλλος ἐστὶν σπείρων καὶ ἄλλος θερίζων
I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have labored and you have entered into their labor." 38ἐγὼ ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς θερίζειν οὐχ ὑμεῖς κεκοπιάκατε ἄλλοι κεκοπιάκασιν καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν κόπον αὐτῶν εἰσεληλύθατε
Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I ever did."39Ἐκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν τῶν Σαμαριτῶν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικὸς μαρτυρούσης ὅτι Εἶπέν μοι πάντα ἐποίησα
So when the Samaritans came to him, they began asking him to stay with them. He stayed there two days,40ὡς οὖν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Σαμαρῖται ἠρώτων αὐτὸν μεῖναι παρ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ δύο ἡμέρας
and because of his word many more believed.41Καὶ πολλῷ πλείους ἐπίστευσαν διὰ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ
They said to the woman, "No longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this one really is the Savior of the world." 42τῇ τε γυναικὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὐκέτι διὰ τὴν σὴν λαλιὰν πιστεύομεν αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκηκόαμεν καὶ οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς Σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου
After the two days he departed from there to Galilee.43Μετὰ δὲ τὰς δύο ἡμέρας ἐξῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)44αὐτὸς γὰρ Ἰησοῦς ἐμαρτύρησεν ὅτι προφήτης ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ πατρίδι τιμὴν οὐκ ἔχει
So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen all the things he had done in Jerusalem at the feast (for they themselves had gone to the feast). 45ὅτε οὖν ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἐδέξαντο αὐτὸν οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι πάντα ἑωρακότες ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν
Now he came again to Cana in Galilee where he had made the water wine. In Capernaum there was a certain royal official whose son was sick.46Ἦλθεν οὖν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Κανὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὅπου ἐποίησεν τὸ ὕδωρ οἶνον Καὶ ἦν τις βασιλικὸς οὗ υἱὸς ἠσθένει ἐν Καφαρναούμ
When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.47οὗτος ἀκούσας ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἥκει ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἀπῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἠρώτα ἵνα καταβῇ καὶ ἰάσηται αὐτοῦ τὸν υἱόν ἤμελλεν γὰρ ἀποθνήσκειν
So Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders you will never believe!"48Εἶπεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτόν Ἐὰν μὴ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ἴδητε οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε
"Sir," the official said to him, "come down before my child dies."49Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν βασιλικός Κύριε κατάβηθι πρὶν ἀποθανεῖν τὸ παιδίον μου
Jesus told him, "Go home; your son will live." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and set off for home.
While he was on his way down, his slaves met him and told him that his son was going to live.51ἤδη δὲ αὐτοῦ καταβαίνοντος οἱ δοῦλοι ‹αὐτοῦ› ὑπήντησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες ὅτι παῖς αὐτοῦ ζῇ
So he asked them the time when his condition began to improve, and they told him, "Yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon the fever left him."52Ἐπύθετο οὖν τὴν ὥραν παρ’ αὐτῶν ἐν κομψότερον ἔσχεν εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ ὅτι Ἐχθὲς ὥραν ἑβδόμην ἀφῆκεν αὐτὸν πυρετός
Then the father realized that it was the very time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he himself believed along with his entire household.53Ἔγνω οὖν πατὴρ ὅτι [ἐν] ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐν εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς υἱός σου ζῇ καὶ ἐπίστευσεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἰκία αὐτοῦ ὅλη
Jesus did this as his second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee. 54Τοῦτο δὲ πάλιν δεύτερον σημεῖον ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς ἐλθὼν ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
