Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.1Καὶ ἐξελθὼν Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐπορεύετο καὶ προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπιδεῖξαι αὐτῷ τὰς οἰκοδομὰς τοῦ ἱεροῦ
"Do you see all these things?" he asked. "Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."2 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οὐ βλέπετε ταῦτα πάντα ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ μὴ ἀφεθῇ ὧδε λίθος ἐπὶ λίθον ὃς οὐ καταλυθήσεται
As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"3Καθημένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρους τῶν Ἐλαιῶν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ κατ’ ἰδίαν λέγοντες Εἰπὲ ἡμῖν πότε ταῦτα ἔσται καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον τῆς σῆς παρουσίας καὶ συντελείας τοῦ αἰῶνος
Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you.4Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Βλέπετε μή τις ὑμᾶς πλανήσῃ
For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah,' and will deceive many.5πολλοὶ γὰρ ἐλεύσονται ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου λέγοντες Ἐγώ εἰμι Χριστός καὶ πολλοὺς πλανήσουσιν
You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.6μελλήσετε δὲ ἀκούειν πολέμους καὶ ἀκοὰς πολέμων ὁρᾶτε μὴ θροεῖσθε δεῖ γὰρ γενέσθαι ἀλλ’ οὔπω ἐστὶν τὸ τέλος
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.7ἐγερθήσεται γὰρ ἔθνος ἐπὶ ἔθνος καὶ βασιλεία ἐπὶ βασιλείαν καὶ ἔσονται λιμοὶ καὶ σεισμοὶ κατὰ τόπους
All these are the beginning of birth pains.8πάντα δὲ ταῦτα ἀρχὴ ὠδίνων
"Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.9Τότε παραδώσουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς θλῖψιν καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου
At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,10καὶ τότε σκανδαλισθήσονται πολλοὶ καὶ ἀλλήλους παραδώσουσιν καὶ μισήσουσιν ἀλλήλους
and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.11καὶ πολλοὶ ψευδοπροφῆται ἐγερθήσονται καὶ πλανήσουσιν πολλούς
Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,12Καὶ διὰ τὸ πληθυνθῆναι τὴν ἀνομίαν ψυγήσεται ἀγάπη τῶν πολλῶν
but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.13 δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος οὗτος σωθήσεται
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.14Καὶ κηρυχθήσεται τοῦτο τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς βασιλείας ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ εἰς μαρτύριον πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν καὶ τότε ἥξει τὸ τέλος
"So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel--let the reader understand--15Ὅταν οὖν ἴδητε Τὸ βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Δανιὴλ τοῦ προφήτου ἑστὸς ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ ἀναγινώσκων νοείτω
then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.16τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη
Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house.17 ἐπὶ τοῦ δώματος μὴ καταβάτω ἆραι τὰ ἐκ τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ
Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak.18καὶ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ μὴ ἐπιστρεψάτω ὀπίσω ἆραι τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ
How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!19Οὐαὶ δὲ ταῖς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσαις καὶ ταῖς θηλαζούσαις ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις
Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath.20προσεύχεσθε δὲ ἵνα μὴ γένηται φυγὴ ὑμῶν χειμῶνος μηδὲ σαββάτῳ
For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now--and never to be equaled again.21ἔσται γὰρ τότε θλῖψις μεγάλη οἵα οὐ γέγονεν ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς κόσμου ἕως τοῦ νῦν οὐδ’ οὐ μὴ γένηται
"If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.22καὶ εἰ μὴ ἐκολοβώθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι ἐκεῖναι οὐκ ἂν ἐσώθη πᾶσα σάρξ διὰ δὲ τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς κολοβωθήσονται αἱ ἡμέραι ἐκεῖναι
At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it.23Τότε ἐάν τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ Ἰδοὺ ὧδε Χριστός Ὧδε μὴ πιστεύσητε
For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.24ἐγερθήσονται γὰρ ψευδόχριστοι καὶ ψευδοπροφῆται καὶ δώσουσιν σημεῖα μεγάλα καὶ τέρατα ὥστε πλανῆσαι εἰ δυνατὸν καὶ τοὺς ἐκλεκτούς
See, I have told you ahead of time.25ἰδοὺ προείρηκα ὑμῖν
"So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the wilderness,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it.26Ἐὰν οὖν εἴπωσιν ὑμῖν Ἰδοὺ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ ἐστίν μὴ ἐξέλθητε Ἰδοὺ ἐν τοῖς ταμείοις μὴ πιστεύσητε
For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.27ὥσπερ γὰρ ἀστραπὴ ἐξέρχεται ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν καὶ φαίνεται ἕως δυσμῶν οὕτως ἔσται παρουσία τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.28ὅπου ἐὰν τὸ πτῶμα ἐκεῖ συναχθήσονται οἱ ἀετοί
"Immediately after the distress of those days "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'29Εὐθέως δὲ μετὰ τὴν θλῖψιν τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐκείνων ἥλιος σκοτισθήσεται Καὶ σελήνη οὐ δώσει τὸ φέγγος αὐτῆς Καὶ οἱ ἀστέρες πεσοῦνται ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ Καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται
"Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.30Καὶ τότε φανήσεται τὸ σημεῖον τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐν ‹τῷ› οὐρανῷ καὶ τότε κόψονται πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὄψονται τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐπὶ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ μετὰ δυνάμεως καὶ δόξης πολλῆς
And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.31καὶ ἀποστελεῖ τοὺς ἀγγέλους αὐτοῦ μετὰ σάλπιγγος μεγάλης καὶ ἐπισυνάξουσιν τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῶν τεσσάρων ἀνέμων ἀπ’ ἄκρων οὐρανῶν ἕως ‹τῶν› ἄκρων αὐτῶν
"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.32Ἀπὸ δὲ τῆς συκῆς μάθετε τὴν παραβολήν ὅταν ἤδη κλάδος αὐτῆς γένηται ἁπαλὸς καὶ τὰ φύλλα ἐκφύῃ γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐγγὺς τὸ θέρος
Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.33οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ὅταν ἴδητε πάντα ταῦτα γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐγγύς ἐστιν ἐπὶ θύραις
Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.34ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ γενεὰ αὕτη ἕως ἂν πάντα ταῦτα γένηται
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.35 οὐρανὸς καὶ γῆ παρελεύσεται οἱ δὲ λόγοι μου οὐ μὴ παρέλθωσιν
"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.36Περὶ δὲ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης καὶ ὥρας οὐδεὶς οἶδεν οὐδὲ οἱ ἄγγελοι τῶν οὐρανῶν οὐδὲ Υἱός εἰ μὴ Πατὴρ μόνος
As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.37ὥσπερ γὰρ αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ Νῶε οὕτως ἔσται παρουσία τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;38ὡς γὰρ ἦσαν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ταῖς πρὸ τοῦ κατακλυσμοῦ τρώγοντες καὶ πίνοντες γαμοῦντες καὶ γαμίζοντες ἄχρι ἧς ἡμέρας εἰσῆλθεν Νῶε εἰς τὴν κιβωτόν
and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.39καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν ἕως ἦλθεν κατακλυσμὸς καὶ ἦρεν ἅπαντας οὕτως ἔσται καὶ παρουσία τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.40τότε ἔσονται δύο ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ εἷς παραλαμβάνεται καὶ εἷς ἀφίεται
Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.41δύο ἀλήθουσαι ἐν τῷ μύλῳ μία παραλαμβάνεται καὶ μία ἀφίεται
"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.42Γρηγορεῖτε οὖν ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε ποίᾳ ἡμέρᾳ κύριος ὑμῶν ἔρχεται
But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.43ἐκεῖνο δὲ γινώσκετε ὅτι εἰ ᾔδει οἰκοδεσπότης ποίᾳ φυλακῇ κλέπτης ἔρχεται ἐγρηγόρησεν ἂν καὶ οὐκ ἂν εἴασεν διορυχθῆναι τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ
So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.44διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὑμεῖς γίνεσθε ἕτοιμοι ὅτι οὐ δοκεῖτε ὥρᾳ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔρχεται
"Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?45Τίς ἄρα ἐστὶν πιστὸς δοῦλος καὶ φρόνιμος ὃν κατέστησεν κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκετείας αὐτοῦ τοῦ δοῦναι αὐτοῖς τὴν τροφὴν ἐν καιρῷ
It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.46μακάριος δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ὃν ἐλθὼν κύριος αὐτοῦ εὑρήσει οὕτως ποιοῦντα
Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.47ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς ὑπάρχουσιν αὐτοῦ καταστήσει αὐτόν
But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, 'My master is staying away a long time,'48Ἐὰν δὲ εἴπῃ κακὸς δοῦλος ἐκεῖνος ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ Χρονίζει μου κύριος
and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.49καὶ ἄρξηται τύπτειν τοὺς συνδούλους αὐτοῦ ἐσθίῃ δὲ καὶ πίνῃ μετὰ τῶν μεθυόντων
The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.50ἥξει κύριος τοῦ δούλου ἐκείνου ἐν ἡμέρᾳ οὐ προσδοκᾷ καὶ ἐν ὥρᾳ οὐ γινώσκει
He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.51καὶ διχοτομήσει αὐτὸν καὶ τὸ μέρος αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν ὑποκριτῶν θήσει ἐκεῖ ἔσται κλαυθμὸς καὶ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων
