Temple Destruction Foretold
(Mark 13:1-9; Luke 21:5-9)
1Καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone forth) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple), ἐπορεύετο (He was going away), καὶ (and) προσῆλθον (came to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπιδεῖξαι (to point out) αὐτῷ (to Him) τὰς (the) οἰκοδομὰς (buildings) τοῦ (of the) ἱεροῦ (temple).
2ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐ (Not) βλέπετε (do you see) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all)? ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (none) μὴ (not even) ἀφεθῇ (shall be left) ὧδε (here) λίθος (stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθον (stone), ὃς (which) οὐ (not) καταλυθήσεται (will be thrown down).”
Signs of the End of the Age
3Καθημένου (As was sitting) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (He) ἐπὶ (upon) τοῦ (the) ὄρους (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), προσῆλθον (came to) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private), λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰπὲ (Tell) ἡμῖν (us), πότε (when) ταῦτα (these things) ἔσται (will be)? καὶ (And) τί (what is) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) τῆς (-) σῆς (of Your) παρουσίας (coming) καὶ (and) συντελείας (of the consummation) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age)?”
4Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Βλέπετε (Take heed), μή (lest) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you) πλανήσῃ (mislead).
5πολλοὶ (Many) γὰρ (for) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ),’ καὶ (and) πολλοὺς (many) πλανήσουσιν (they will mislead).
6μελλήσετε (You will begin) δὲ (then) ἀκούειν (to hear of) πολέμους (wars) καὶ (and) ἀκοὰς (rumors) πολέμων (of wars). ὁρᾶτε (Behold), μὴ (not) θροεῖσθε (be alarmed); δεῖ (it is necessary) γὰρ (for) γενέσθαι (to take place), ἀλλ’ (but) οὔπω (not yet) ἐστὶν (is) τὸ (the) τέλος (end).
7ἐγερθήσεται (Will rise up) γὰρ (for) ἔθνος (nation) ἐπὶ (against) ἔθνος (nation), καὶ (and) βασιλεία (kingdom) ἐπὶ (against) βασιλείαν (kingdom); καὶ (and) ἔσονται (there will be) λιμοὶ (famines) καὶ (and) σεισμοὶ (earthquakes) κατὰ (in) τόπους (various places).
8πάντα (All) δὲ (then) ταῦτα (these are) ἀρχὴ (the beginning) ὠδίνων (of birth pains).
Witnessing to All Nations
(Mark 13:10-13; Luke 21:10-19)
9Τότε (Then) παραδώσουσιν (will they deliver) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (to) θλῖψιν (tribulation), καὶ (and) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (will kill) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἔσεσθε (you will be) μισούμενοι (hated) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) ἐθνῶν (nations) διὰ (on account of) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me).
10καὶ (And) τότε (then) σκανδαλισθήσονται (will fall away) πολλοὶ (many), καὶ (and) ἀλλήλους (one another) παραδώσουσιν (they will betray), καὶ (and) μισήσουσιν (will hate) ἀλλήλους (one another);
11καὶ (and) πολλοὶ (many) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐγερθήσονται (will arise) καὶ (and) πλανήσουσιν (will mislead) πολλούς (many).
12Καὶ (And) διὰ (because) τὸ (-) πληθυνθῆναι (is to be multiplied) τὴν (-) ἀνομίαν (lawlessness), ψυγήσεται (will grow cold) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τῶν (of the) πολλῶν (many).
13ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) ὑπομείνας (having endured) εἰς (to the) τέλος (end), οὗτος (he) σωθήσεται (will be saved).
14Καὶ (And) κηρυχθήσεται (there will be proclaimed) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) ἐν (in) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) οἰκουμένῃ (earth), εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) πᾶσιν (to all) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (nations); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ἥξει (will come) τὸ (the) τέλος (end).
The Abomination of Desolation
(Mark 13:14-23; Luke 21:20-24)
15Ὅταν (When) οὖν (therefore) ἴδητε (you shall see) ‘Τὸ (the) βδέλυγμα (abomination) τῆς (-) ἐρημώσεως (of desolation),’a τὸ (-) ῥηθὲν (having been spoken of) διὰ (by) Δανιὴλ (Daniel) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet), ἑστὸς (standing) ἐν (in the) τόπῳ (place) ἁγίῳ (holy) — ὁ (the one) ἀναγινώσκων (reading) νοείτω (let him understand) —
16τότε (then) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea), φευγέτωσαν (let them flee) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὄρη (mountains);
17ὁ (the one) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) δώματος (housetop), μὴ (not) καταβάτω (let him come down) ἆραι (to take) τὰ (anything) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) οἰκίας (house) αὐτοῦ (of him);
18καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀγρῷ (field), μὴ (neither) ἐπιστρεψάτω (let him return) ὀπίσω (back) ἆραι (to take) τὸ (the) ἱμάτιον (cloak) αὐτοῦ (of him).
19Οὐαὶ (Woe) δὲ (then) ταῖς (to those) ἐν (in) γαστρὶ (womb) ἐχούσαις (having), καὶ (and) ταῖς (to the ones) θηλαζούσαις (nursing infants) ἐν (in) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days).
20προσεύχεσθε (Pray) δὲ (however) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) γένηται (might be) ἡ (the) φυγὴ (flight) ὑμῶν (of you) χειμῶνος (in winter), μηδὲ (nor) σαββάτῳ (on a Sabbath).
21ἔσται (There will be) γὰρ (for) τότε (then) θλῖψις (tribulation) μεγάλη (great), οἵα (such as) οὐ (not) γέγονεν (has been) ἀπ’ (from the) ἀρχῆς (beginning) κόσμου (of the world) ἕως (until) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now), οὐδ’ (no) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) γένηται (shall be).
22καὶ (And) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐκολοβώθησαν (had been shortened) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) ἐκεῖναι (those), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἐσώθη (there would have been saved) πᾶσα (any) σάρξ (flesh); διὰ (because of) δὲ (however) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτοὺς (elect), κολοβωθήσονται (will be shortened) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) ἐκεῖναι (those).
23Τότε (Then) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you) εἴπῃ (says), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὧδε (here is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ),’ ἤ (or) ‘Ὧδε (Here),’ μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (believe it).
24ἐγερθήσονται (There will arise) γὰρ (for) ψευδόχριστοι (false Christs) καὶ (and) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets), καὶ (and) δώσουσιν (they will give) σημεῖα (signs) μεγάλα (great), καὶ (and) τέρατα (wonders), ὥστε (so as) πλανῆσαι (to mislead), εἰ (if) δυνατὸν (possible), καὶ (even) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτούς (elect).
25ἰδοὺ (Behold), προείρηκα (I have foretold it) ὑμῖν (to you).
The Return of the Son of Man
(Mark 13:24-27; Luke 21:25-28)
26Ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) εἴπωσιν (they say) ὑμῖν (to you), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) ἐστίν (He is),’ μὴ (not) ἐξέλθητε (go forth); Ἰδοὺ (or ‘Behold), ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ταμείοις (inner rooms),’ μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (believe it).
27ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) ἀστραπὴ (lightning) ἐξέρχεται (comes forth) ἀπὸ (from the) ἀνατολῶν (east) καὶ (and) φαίνεται (shines) ἕως (as far as the) δυσμῶν (west), οὕτως (so) ἔσται (will be) ἡ (the) παρουσία (coming) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).
28ὅπου (For wherever) ἐὰν (if) ᾖ (may be) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (carcass), ἐκεῖ (there) συναχθήσονται (will be gathered) οἱ (the) ἀετοί (vultures).
29Εὐθέως (Immediately) δὲ (then) μετὰ (after) τὴν (the) θλῖψιν (tribulation) τῶν (the) ἡμερῶν (days) ἐκείνων (of those):
‘Ὁ (The) ἥλιος (sun) σκοτισθήσεται (will be darkened),
Καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σελήνη (moon) οὐ (not) δώσει (will give) τὸ (the) φέγγος (light) αὐτῆς (of it),
Καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀστέρες (stars) πεσοῦνται (will fall) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) οὐρανοῦ (sky),
Καὶ (and) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (powers) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) σαλευθήσονται (will be shaken).’b
30Καὶ (And) τότε (then) φανήσεται (will appear) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) ‹τῷ› (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), καὶ (and) τότε (then) κόψονται (will mourn) πᾶσαι (all) αἱ (the) φυλαὶ (tribes) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), καὶ (and) ὄψονται (they will see) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐπὶ (on) τῶν (the) νεφελῶν (clouds) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (of heaven) μετὰ (with) δυνάμεως (power) καὶ (and) δόξης (glory) πολλῆς (great).c
31καὶ (And) ἀποστελεῖ (He will send) τοὺς (the) ἀγγέλους (angels) αὐτοῦ (of Him) μετὰ (with) σάλπιγγος (a trumpet call) μεγάλης (great), καὶ (and) ἐπισυνάξουσιν (they will gather together) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτοὺς (elect) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) τεσσάρων (four) ἀνέμων (winds), ἀπ’ (from) ἄκρων (the ends) οὐρανῶν (of the heavens) ἕως (to) ‹τῶν› (the) ἄκρων (ends) αὐτῶν (of them).
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
(Mark 13:28-31; Luke 21:29-33)
32Ἀπὸ (Of) δὲ (now) τῆς (the) συκῆς (fig tree) μάθετε (learn) τὴν (the) παραβολήν (parable): ὅταν (When) ἤδη (already) ὁ (the) κλάδος (branch) αὐτῆς (of it) γένηται (may have become) ἁπαλὸς (tender) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) φύλλα (leaves) ἐκφύῃ (it puts forth), γινώσκετε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἐγγὺς (near is) τὸ (the) θέρος (summer).
33οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you), ὅταν (when) ἴδητε (you see) πάντα (all) ταῦτα (these things), γινώσκετε (know) ὅτι (that) ἐγγύς (near) ἐστιν (He is),d ἐπὶ (at) θύραις (the doors).
34ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρέλθῃ (will have passed away) ἡ (the) γενεὰ (generation) αὕτη (this) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) πάντα (all) ταῦτα (these things) γένηται (shall have taken place).
35ὁ (The) οὐρανὸς (heaven) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) παρελεύσεται (will pass away), οἱ (-) δὲ (but) λόγοι (the words) μου (of Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρέλθωσιν (shall pass away).
Readiness at Any Hour

36Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (however) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἐκείνης (that) καὶ (and) ὥρας (hour), οὐδεὶς (no one) οἶδεν (knows), οὐδὲ (not even) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), οὐδὲ (nor) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son),e εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) μόνος (only).
37ὥσπερ (As were) γὰρ (for) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) τοῦ (-) Νῶε (of Noah), οὕτως (so) ἔσται (will be) ἡ (the) παρουσία (coming) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).
38ὡς (As) γὰρ (for) ἦσαν (they were) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (-) πρὸ (before) τοῦ (the) κατακλυσμοῦ (flood), τρώγοντες (eating) καὶ (and) πίνοντες (drinking), γαμοῦντες (marrying) καὶ (and) γαμίζοντες (giving in marriage), ἄχρι (until) ἧς (that) ἡμέρας (day) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) Νῶε (Noah) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κιβωτόν (ark).
39καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (they knew), ἕως (until) ἦλθεν (came) ὁ (the) κατακλυσμὸς (flood) καὶ (and) ἦρεν (took away) ἅπαντας (all); οὕτως (thus) ἔσται (will be) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) παρουσία (coming) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).
40τότε (Then) ἔσονται (will be) ⇔ δύο (two) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀγρῷ (field): εἷς (one) παραλαμβάνεται (is taken), καὶ (and) εἷς (one) ἀφίεται (is left).
41δύο (Two women) ἀλήθουσαι (will be grinding) ἐν (at) τῷ (the) μύλῳ (mill): μία (one) παραλαμβάνεται (is taken), καὶ (and) μία (one) ἀφίεται (is left).
42Γρηγορεῖτε (Keep watch) οὖν (therefore), ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know) ποίᾳ (on what) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ὁ (the) κύριος (Lord) ὑμῶν (of you) ἔρχεται (comes).
43ἐκεῖνο (This) δὲ (then) γινώσκετε (know), ὅτι (that) εἰ (if) ᾔδει (had known) ὁ (the) οἰκοδεσπότης (master of the house) ποίᾳ (in what) φυλακῇ (time of night) ὁ (the) κλέπτης (thief) ἔρχεται (comes), ἐγρηγόρησεν (he would have watched) ἂν (-) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) εἴασεν (have allowed) διορυχθῆναι (to be broken into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) αὐτοῦ (of him).
44διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also), ὑμεῖς (you) γίνεσθε (be) ἕτοιμοι (ready), ὅτι (for) ᾗ (in that) οὐ (not) δοκεῖτε (you expect) ὥρᾳ (hour), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἔρχεται (comes).
45Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (the) πιστὸς (faithful) δοῦλος (servant), καὶ (and) φρόνιμος (wise), ὃν (whom) κατέστησεν (has set) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) ἐπὶ (over) τῆς (the) οἰκετείας (household) αὐτοῦ (of him), τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to give) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὴν (the) τροφὴν (food) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (season)?
46μακάριος (Blessed is) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (that), ὃν (whom) ἐλθὼν (having come), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) εὑρήσει (will find) οὕτως (thus) ποιοῦντα (doing).
47ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐπὶ (over) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (the) ὑπάρχουσιν (possessing) αὐτοῦ (of him) καταστήσει (he will set) αὐτόν (him).
48Ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπῃ (should say) ὁ (the) κακὸς (evil) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (that) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Χρονίζει (Delays) μου (of Me) ὁ (the) κύριος (master),’
49καὶ (and) ἄρξηται (should begin) τύπτειν (to beat) τοὺς (the) συνδούλους (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐσθίῃ (to eat) δὲ (then) καὶ (and) πίνῃ (to drink) μετὰ (with) τῶν (those) μεθυόντων (being drunkards),
50ἥξει (will come) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (the) δούλου (servant) ἐκείνου (of that) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (a day) ᾗ (in which) οὐ (not) προσδοκᾷ (he does expect), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὥρᾳ (an hour) ᾗ (which) οὐ (not) γινώσκει (he is aware),
51καὶ (and) διχοτομήσει (will cut in pieces) αὐτὸν (him), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) μέρος (place) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ὑποκριτῶν (hypocrites) θήσει (will appoint); ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of) ὀδόντων (teeth).
