Then Jesus left that place and went into the region of Judea, beyond the Jordan. Again the crowds came to Him and He taught them, as was His custom.1Καὶ ἐκεῖθεν ἀναστὰς ἔρχεται εἰς τὰ ὅρια τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου καὶ συμπορεύονται πάλιν ὄχλοι πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ ὡς εἰώθει πάλιν ἐδίδασκεν αὐτούς
Some Pharisees came to test Him. “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” they inquired.2Καὶ προσελθόντες Φαρισαῖοι ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν εἰ ἔξεστιν ἀνδρὶ γυναῖκα ἀπολῦσαι πειράζοντες αὐτόν
“What did Moses command you?” He replied.3 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τί ὑμῖν ἐνετείλατο Μωϋσῆς
They answered, “Moses permitted a man to write his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away.”4Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ἐπέτρεψεν Μωϋσῆς βιβλίον ἀποστασίου γράψαι καὶ ἀπολῦσαι
But Jesus told them, “Moses wrote this commandment for you because of your hardness of heart.5 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πρὸς τὴν σκληροκαρδίαν ὑμῶν ἔγραψεν ὑμῖν τὴν ἐντολὴν ταύτην
However, from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’6ἀπὸ δὲ ἀρχῆς κτίσεως Ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ ἐποίησεν αὐτούς
‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,7Ἕνεκεν τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν μητέρα ‹καὶ προσκολληθήσεται πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ›
and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh.8καὶ ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν ὥστε οὐκέτι εἰσὶν δύο ἀλλὰ μία σάρξ
Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”9 οὖν Θεὸς συνέζευξεν ἄνθρωπος μὴ χωριζέτω
When they were back inside the house, the disciples asked Jesus about this matter.10Καὶ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν πάλιν οἱ μαθηταὶ περὶ τούτου ἐπηρώτων αὐτόν
So He told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.11καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ καὶ γαμήσῃ ἄλλην μοιχᾶται ἐπ’ αὐτήν
And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”12καὶ ἐὰν αὐτὴ ἀπολύσασα τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτῆς γαμήσῃ ἄλλον μοιχᾶται
Now people were bringing the little children to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them, and the disciples rebuked those who brought them.13Καὶ προσέφερον αὐτῷ παιδία ἵνα αὐτῶν ἅψηται οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἐπετίμησαν αὐτοῖς
But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and told them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.14Ἰδὼν δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἠγανάκτησεν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία ἔρχεσθαι πρός με μὴ κωλύετε αὐτά τῶν γὰρ τοιούτων ἐστὶν βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ
Truly I tell you, anyone who does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”15ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὃς ἂν μὴ δέξηται τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ ὡς παιδίον οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς αὐτήν
And He took the children in His arms, placed His hands on them, and blessed them.16καὶ ἐναγκαλισάμενος αὐτὰ κατευλόγει τιθεὶς τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ’ αὐτά
As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up and knelt before Him. “Good Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”17Καὶ ἐκπορευομένου αὐτοῦ εἰς ὁδὸν προσδραμὼν εἷς καὶ γονυπετήσας αὐτὸν ἐπηρώτα αὐτόν Διδάσκαλε ἀγαθέ τί ποιήσω ἵνα ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσω
“Why do you call Me good?” Jesus replied. “No one is good except God alone.18 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τί με λέγεις ἀγαθόν οὐδεὶς ἀγαθὸς εἰ μὴ εἷς Θεός
You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not cheat others, honor your father and mother.’
“Teacher,” he replied, “all these I have kept from my youth.”20 δὲ ἔφη αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλε ταῦτα πάντα ἐφυλαξάμην ἐκ νεότητός μου
Jesus looked at him, loved him, and said to him, “There is one thing you lack: Go, sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”21 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐμβλέψας αὐτῷ ἠγάπησεν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἕν σε ὑστερεῖ ὕπαγε ὅσα ἔχεις πώλησον καὶ δὸς τοῖς πτωχοῖς καὶ ἕξεις θησαυρὸν ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ δεῦρο ἀκολούθει μοι
But the man was saddened by these words and went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.22 δὲ στυγνάσας ἐπὶ τῷ λόγῳ ἀπῆλθεν λυπούμενος ἦν γὰρ ἔχων κτήματα πολλά
Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”23Καὶ περιβλεψάμενος Ἰησοῦς λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Πῶς δυσκόλως οἱ τὰ χρήματα ἔχοντες εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσελεύσονται
And the disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!24οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἐθαμβοῦντο ἐπὶ τοῖς λόγοις αὐτοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν ἀποκριθεὶς λέγει αὐτοῖς Τέκνα πῶς δύσκολόν ἐστιν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσελθεῖν ⧼τοὺς πεποιθότας ἐπὶ χρήμασιν⧽
It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”25εὐκοπώτερόν ἐστιν κάμηλον διὰ τῆς τρυμαλιᾶς τῆς ῥαφίδος διελθεῖν πλούσιον εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσελθεῖν
They were even more astonished and said to one another, “Who then can be saved?”26Οἱ δὲ περισσῶς ἐξεπλήσσοντο λέγοντες πρὸς ἑαυτούς Καὶ τίς δύναται σωθῆναι
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”27Ἐμβλέψας αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς λέγει Παρὰ ἀνθρώποις ἀδύνατον ἀλλ’ οὐ παρὰ θεῷ πάντα γὰρ δυνατὰ παρὰ τῷ θεῷ
Peter began to say to Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.”28Ἤρξατο λέγειν Πέτρος αὐτῷ Ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἀφήκαμεν πάντα καὶ ἠκολουθήκαμέν σοι
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the gospel29Ἔφη Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐδείς ἐστιν ὃς ἀφῆκεν οἰκίαν ἀδελφοὺς ἀδελφὰς μητέρα πατέρα τέκνα ἀγροὺς ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ καὶ ἕνεκεν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου
will fail to receive a hundredfold in the present age—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, along with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.30ἐὰν μὴ λάβῃ ἑκατονταπλασίονα νῦν ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τούτῳ οἰκίας καὶ ἀδελφοὺς καὶ ἀδελφὰς καὶ μητέρας καὶ τέκνα καὶ ἀγροὺς μετὰ διωγμῶν καὶ ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τῷ ἐρχομένῳ ζωὴν αἰώνιον
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”31πολλοὶ δὲ ἔσονται πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι καὶ οἱ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι
As they were going up the road to Jerusalem, Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were amazed, but those who followed were afraid. Again Jesus took the Twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him:32Ἦσαν δὲ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἀναβαίνοντες εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ ἦν προάγων αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἐθαμβοῦντο οἱ δὲ ἀκολουθοῦντες ἐφοβοῦντο καὶ παραλαβὼν πάλιν τοὺς δώδεκα ἤρξατο αὐτοῖς λέγειν τὰ μέλλοντα αὐτῷ συμβαίνειν
“Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles,33ὅτι Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ τοῖς γραμματεῦσιν καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν θανάτῳ καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν
who will mock Him and spit on Him and flog Him and kill Him. And after three days He will rise again.”34καὶ ἐμπαίξουσιν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐμπτύσουσιν αὐτῷ καὶ μαστιγώσουσιν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν καὶ μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἀναστήσεται
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and declared, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.”35Καὶ προσπορεύονται αὐτῷ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωάννης οἱ (δύο) υἱοὶ Ζεβεδαίου λέγοντες αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλε θέλομεν ἵνα ἐὰν αἰτήσωμέν σε ποιήσῃς ἡμῖν
“What do you want Me to do for you?” He inquired.36 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τί θέλετε με ποιήσω ὑμῖν
They answered, “Grant that one of us may sit at Your right hand and the other at Your left in Your glory.”37Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Δὸς ἡμῖν ἵνα εἷς σου ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ εἷς ἐξ ἀριστερῶν καθίσωμεν ἐν τῇ δόξῃ σου
“You do not know what you are asking,” Jesus replied. “Can you drink the cup I will drink, or be baptized with the baptism I will undergo?”38 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ἐγὼ πίνω τὸ βάπτισμα ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθῆναι
“We can,” the brothers answered. “You will drink the cup that I drink,” Jesus said, “and you will be baptized with the baptism that I undergo.39Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Δυνάμεθα δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τὸ ποτήριον ἐγὼ πίνω πίεσθε καὶ τὸ βάπτισμα ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθήσεσθε
But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to grant. These seats belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”40τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἐξ εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν δοῦναι ἀλλ’ οἷς ἡτοίμασται
When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.41Καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ δέκα ἤρξαντο ἀγανακτεῖν περὶ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωάννου
So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.42καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς Οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ δοκοῦντες ἄρχειν τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι αὐτῶν κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν
But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,43οὐχ οὕτως δέ ἐστιν ἐν ὑμῖν ἀλλ’ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ μέγας γενέσθαι ἐν ὑμῖν ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος
and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all.44καὶ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι πρῶτος ἔσται πάντων δοῦλος
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”45καὶ γὰρ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν
Next, they came to Jericho. And as Jesus and His disciples were leaving Jericho with a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road.46Καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς Ἰεριχώ Καὶ ἐκπορευομένου αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ Ἰεριχὼ καὶ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ὄχλου ἱκανοῦ υἱὸς Τιμαίου Βαρτιμαῖος τυφλὸς προσαίτης ἐκάθητο παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν
When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”47καὶ ἀκούσας ὅτι Ἰησοῦς Ναζαρηνός ἐστιν ἤρξατο κράζειν καὶ λέγειν Υἱὲ Δαυὶδ Ἰησοῦ ἐλέησόν με
Many people admonished him to be silent, but he cried out all the louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”48Καὶ ἐπετίμων αὐτῷ πολλοὶ ἵνα σιωπήσῃ δὲ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἔκραζεν Υἱὲ Δαυίδ ἐλέησόν με
Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man. “Take courage!” they said. “Get up! He is calling for you.”49Καὶ στὰς Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Φωνήσατε αὐτόν Καὶ φωνοῦσιν τὸν τυφλὸν λέγοντες αὐτῷ Θάρσει ἔγειρε φωνεῖ σε
Throwing off his cloak, Bartimaeus jumped up and came to Jesus.50 δὲ ἀποβαλὼν τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ ἀναπηδήσας ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν
“What do you want Me to do for you?” Jesus asked. “Rabboni,” said the blind man, “let me see again.”51Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Τί σοι θέλεις ποιήσω δὲ τυφλὸς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ραββουνι ἵνα ἀναβλέψω
“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.52Καὶ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὕπαγε πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε καὶ εὐθὺς ἀνέβλεψεν καὶ ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ
