Luke 13

A Call to Repentance
(Joel 1:13–20; Amos 5:4–15; Zephaniah 2:1–3)

1  Παρῆσαν (Were present) δέ (now) τινες (some) ἐν (at) αὐτῷ (the same) τῷ (-) καιρῷ (time) ἀπαγγέλλοντες (reporting) αὐτῷ (to Him) περὶ (about) τῶν (the) Γαλιλαίων (Galileans) ὧν (of whom) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἔμιξεν (mixed) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) θυσιῶν (sacrifices) αὐτῶν (of them). 2  καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Δοκεῖτε (Do you⁺ think) ὅτι (that) οἱ (-) Γαλιλαῖοι (Galileans) οὗτοι (these) ἁμαρτωλοὶ (sinners) παρὰ (beyond) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) Γαλιλαίους (Galileans) ἐγένοντο (were), ὅτι (because) ταῦτα (these things) πεπόνθασιν (they have suffered)? 3  οὐχί (No), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μετανοῆτε (you⁺ repent), πάντες (all) ὁμοίως (likewise) ἀπολεῖσθε (you⁺ will perish). 4  (Or) ἐκεῖνοι (those) οἱ (-) δέκα‿ (ten and) οκτὼ (eight) ἐφ’ (on) οὓς (whom) ἔπεσεν (fell) (the) πύργος (tower) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Σιλωὰμ (Siloam) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτεινεν (killed) αὐτούς (them), δοκεῖτε (Do you⁺ think) ὅτι (that) αὐτοὶ (these) ὀφειλέται (debtors) ἐγένοντο (were) παρὰ (beyond) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) τοὺς (-) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) Ἰερουσαλήμ (in Jerusalem)? 5  οὐχί (No), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μετανοῆτε (you⁺ repent), πάντες (all) ὡσαύτως (likewise) ἀπολεῖσθε (you⁺ will perish).

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree
(Isaiah 5:1–7)

6  Ἔλεγεν (He was speaking) δὲ (then) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) παραβολήν (parable). Συκῆν (A fig tree) εἶχέν (had) τις (a certain man) πεφυτευμένην (planted) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀμπελῶνι (vineyard) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (he came) ζητῶν (seeking) καρπὸν (fruit) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it) καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὗρεν (he found any). 7  εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) ἀμπελουργόν (vinedresser)· Ἰδοὺ (Behold) τρία (three) ἔτη (years) ἀφ’ (for) οὗ (these) ἔρχομαι (I come) ζητῶν (seeking) καρπὸν (fruit) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) συκῇ (fig tree) ταύτῃ (this) καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὑρίσκω (find it)· ἔκκοψον (Cut down) οὖν (therefore) αὐτήν (it)· ἵνα‿ (that) τί (why) καὶ (also) τὴν (the) γῆν (soil) καταργεῖ (does it render useless)?

8  (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) λέγει (he says) αὐτῷ (to him)· Κύριε (Sir), ἄφες (leave) αὐτὴν (it) καὶ (also) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (the) ἔτος (year), ἕως (until) ὅτου (when) σκάψω (I may dig) περὶ (around) αὐτὴν (it) καὶ (and) βάλω (put in) κόπρια (manure), 9  κἂν (and if) μὲν (indeed) ποιήσῃ (it should make) καρπὸν (fruit) εἰς (in) τὸ (the time) μέλλον (so be it)· εἰ (If) δὲ (however) μή¦γε (not), ἐκκόψεις (you will cut down) αὐτήν (it).

10  Ἦν (He was) δὲ (now) διδάσκων (teaching) ἐν (in) μιᾷ (one) τῶν (of the) συναγωγῶν (synagogues) ἐν (on) τοῖς (the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths). 11  καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold) γυνὴ (a woman) πνεῦμα (a spirit) ἔχουσα (having) ἀσθενείας (of infirmity) ἔτη (years) δέκα‿ (ten and) οκτώ (eight), καὶ (And) ἦν (she was) συνκύπτουσα (bent over) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) δυναμένη (able) ἀνακύψαι (to lift herself up) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) παντελές (full). 12  ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (then) αὐτὴν (her) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) προσεφώνησεν (called her near) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her)· Γύναι (Woman), ἀπολέλυσαι (you have been freed from) τῆς (the) ἀσθενείας (infirmity) σου (of you), 13  καὶ (And) ἐπέθηκεν (He laid) αὐτῇ (on her) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands)· καὶ (and) παραχρῆμα (immediately) ἀνωρθώθη (she was set upright), καὶ (and) ἐδόξαζεν (was glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).

14  Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) (the) ἀρχισυνάγωγος (synagogue ruler), ἀγανακτῶν (indignant) ὅτι (because) τῷ (on the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) ἐθεράπευσεν (healed) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἔλεγεν (he was saying) τῷ (to the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) ὅτι (-) Ἓξ (Six) ἡμέραι (days) εἰσὶν (there are) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) δεῖ (it is necessary) ἐργάζεσθαι (to work)· ἐν (in) αὐταῖς (these) οὖν (therefore) ἐρχόμενοι (coming) θεραπεύεσθε (be healed) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) τῇ (on the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) σαββάτου (Sabbath).

15  Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) δὲ (however) αὐτῷ (him) (the) Κύριος (Lord) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said)· Ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites), ἕκαστος (Each one) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) τῷ (on the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) οὐ (not) λύει (does he loose) τὸν (the) βοῦν (ox) αὐτοῦ (of him) (or) τὸν (the) ὄνον (donkey) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) φάτνης (stall) καὶ (and) ἀπαγαγὼν (having led it away) ποτίζει (give to it to drink)? 16  ταύτην (This one) δὲ (now) θυγατέρα (a daughter) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham) οὖσαν (being), ἣν (whom) ἔδησεν (bound) (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) ἰδοὺ (behold) δέκα (ten) καὶ (and) ὀκτὼ (eight) ἔτη (years), οὐκ (not) ἔδει (was it necessary fpr her) λυθῆναι (to be loosed) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) δεσμοῦ (bond) τούτου (this) τῇ (on the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) σαββάτου (Sabbath)?

17  Καὶ (And) ταῦτα (these things) λέγοντος (on the saying) αὐτοῦ (of Him) κατῃσχύνοντο (were ashamed) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) ἀντικείμενοι (opposed) αὐτῷ (to Him), καὶ (and) πᾶς (all) (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ἔχαιρεν (was rejoicing) ἐπὶ (at) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (the) ἐνδόξοις (glorious things) τοῖς (that) γινομένοις (were being done) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him).

The Parable of the Mustard Seed
(Matthew 13:31–32; Mark 4:30–34)

18  Ἔλεγεν (He was saying) οὖν (then)· Τίνι (What) ὁμοία (like) ἐστὶν (is) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (And) τίνι (to what) ὁμοιώσω (will I liken) αὐτήν (it)? 19  ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (it is) κόκκῳ (a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ὃν (that) λαβὼν (having taken) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἔβαλεν (cast) εἰς (into) κῆπον (garden) ἑαυτοῦ (his), καὶ (and) ηὔξησεν (it grew) καὶ (and) ἐγένετο (became) εἰς (into) δένδρον (a tree), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (sky) κατεσκήνωσεν (lodged) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) κλάδοις (branches) αὐτοῦ (of it).

The Parable of the Leaven
(Matthew 13:33)

20  Καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) εἶπεν (He said)· Τίνι (To what) ὁμοιώσω (shall I liken) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)? 21  ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (it is) ζύμῃ (leaven), ἣν (that) λαβοῦσα (having taken) γυνὴ (a woman) ἔκρυψεν (hid) εἰς (in) ἀλεύρου (of flour) σάτα (measures) τρία (three), ἕως (until) οὗ (it) ἐζυμώθη (was leavened) ὅλον (all).

The Narrow Door

22  Καὶ (And) διεπορεύετο (He was going through) κατὰ (by) πόλεις (towns) καὶ (and) κώμας (villages) διδάσκων (teaching) καὶ (and) πορείαν (progress) ποιούμενος (making) εἰς (toward) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem). 23  Εἶπεν (Said) δέ (then) τις (someone) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) ὀλίγοι (are few) οἱ (those) σῳζόμενοι (being saved)?

(-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them)· 24  Ἀγωνίζεσθε (Strive) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) στενῆς (narrow) θύρας (door), ὅτι (because) πολλοί (many), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), ζητήσουσιν (will seek) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἰσχύσουσιν (will be able). 25  ἀφ’ (From) οὗ (that time) ἂν (-) ἐγερθῇ (shall have risen up) (the) οἰκοδεσπότης (master of the house) καὶ (and) ἀποκλείσῃ (shall have shut) τὴν (the) θύραν (door), καὶ (then) ἄρξησθε (you⁺ shall begin) ἔξω (outside) ἑστάναι (to stand) καὶ (and) κρούειν (to knock) τὴν (at the) θύραν (door) λέγοντες (saying)· Κύριε (Lord), ἄνοιξον (open) ἡμῖν (to us)·

Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) ἐρεῖ (he will say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺)· Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I do know) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) πόθεν (from where) ἐστέ (are).

26  Τότε (Then) ἄρξεσθε (you⁺ will begin) λέγειν (to say)· Ἐφάγομεν (We ate) ἐνώπιόν (in the presence) σου (of you) καὶ (and) ἐπίομεν (drank), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) πλατείαις (streets) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐδίδαξας (you taught)·

27  Καὶ (And) ἐρεῖ (he will say)· Λέγων (I am saying) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) Οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I know) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) πόθεν (from where) ἐστέ (are)· ἀπόστητε (depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) πάντες (all you⁺) ἐργάται (workers) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness).

28  Ἐκεῖ (There) ἔσται (will be) (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth), ὅταν (when) ὄψησθε (you⁺ shall see) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) καὶ (and) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) καὶ (and) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob) καὶ (and) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὑμᾶς (you⁺) δὲ (however) ἐκβαλλομένους (are being cast) ἔξω (outside). 29  καὶ (And) ἥξουσιν (they will come) ἀπὸ (from) ἀνατολῶν (east) καὶ (and) δυσμῶν (west) καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) βορρᾶ (north) καὶ (and) νότου (south), καὶ (and) ἀνακλιθήσονται (will recline) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). 30  καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold) εἰσὶν (there are) ἔσχατοι (last) οἳ (who) ἔσονται (will be) πρῶτοι (first), καὶ (and) εἰσὶν (there are) πρῶτοι (first) οἳ (who) ἔσονται (will be) ἔσχατοι (last).

Lament over Jerusalem

31  Ἐν (In) αὐτῇ (same) τῇ (the) ὥρᾳ (hour) προσῆλθάν (came near) τινες (some) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) λέγοντες (saying) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Ἔξελθε (Go out) καὶ (and) πορεύου (proceed) ἐντεῦθεν (from here), ὅτι (because) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) θέλει (wants) σε (You) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill).
