After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place He was about to visit.1Μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἀνέδειξεν Κύριος ‹καὶ› ἑτέρους ἑβδομήκοντα ‹δύο› καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς ἀνὰ δύο ‹δύο› πρὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ εἰς πᾶσαν πόλιν καὶ τόπον οὗ ἤμελλεν αὐτὸς ἔρχεσθαι
And He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest.2ἔλεγεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς μὲν θερισμὸς πολύς οἱ δὲ ἐργάται ὀλίγοι δεήθητε οὖν τοῦ Κυρίου τοῦ θερισμοῦ ὅπως ἐργάτας ἐκβάλῃ εἰς τὸν θερισμὸν αὐτοῦ
Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.3Ὑπάγετε ἰδοὺ ἀποστέλλω ὑμᾶς ὡς ἄρνας ἐν μέσῳ λύκων
Carry no purse or bag or sandals. Do not greet anyone along the road.4μὴ βαστάζετε βαλλάντιον μὴ πήραν μὴ ὑποδήματα καὶ μηδένα κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν ἀσπάσησθε
Whatever house you enter, begin by saying, ‘Peace to this house.’5Εἰς ἣν δ’ ἂν εἰσέλθητε οἰκίαν πρῶτον λέγετε Εἰρήνη τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ
If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you.6καὶ ἐὰν ἐκεῖ υἱὸς εἰρήνης ἐπαναπαήσεται ἐπ’ αὐτὸν εἰρήνη ὑμῶν εἰ δὲ μή¦γε ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἀνακάμψει
Stay at the same house, eating and drinking whatever you are offered. For the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move around from house to house.7ἐν αὐτῇ δὲ τῇ οἰκίᾳ μένετε ἐσθίοντες* καὶ πίνοντες τὰ παρ’ αὐτῶν ἄξιος γὰρ ἐργάτης τοῦ μισθοῦ αὐτοῦ μὴ μεταβαίνετε ἐξ οἰκίας εἰς οἰκίαν
If you enter a town and they welcome you, eat whatever is set before you.8Καὶ εἰς ἣν ἂν πόλιν εἰσέρχησθε καὶ δέχωνται ὑμᾶς ἐσθίετε τὰ παρατιθέμενα ὑμῖν
Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’9καὶ θεραπεύετε τοὺς ἐν αὐτῇ ἀσθενεῖς καὶ λέγετε αὐτοῖς Ἤγγικεν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ
But if you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go into the streets and declare,10Εἰς ἣν δ’ ἂν πόλιν εἰσέλθητε καὶ μὴ δέχωνται ὑμᾶς ἐξελθόντες εἰς τὰς πλατείας αὐτῆς εἴπατε
‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off as a testimony against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’11Καὶ τὸν κονιορτὸν τὸν κολληθέντα ἡμῖν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ὑμῶν εἰς τοὺς πόδας ἀπομασσόμεθα ὑμῖν πλὴν τοῦτο γινώσκετε ὅτι ἤγγικεν βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ
I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.12λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι Σοδόμοις ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ
Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.13Οὐαί σοι Χοραζίν οὐαί σοι Βηθσαϊδά ὅτι εἰ ἐν Τύρῳ καὶ Σιδῶνι ἐγενήθησαν αἱ δυνάμεις αἱ γενόμεναι ἐν ὑμῖν πάλαι ἂν ἐν σάκκῳ καὶ σποδῷ καθήμενοι μετενόησαν
But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.14πλὴν Τύρῳ καὶ Σιδῶνι ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται ἐν τῇ κρίσει ὑμῖν
And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades!15καὶ σύ Καφαρναούμ μὴ ἕως οὐρανοῦ ὑψωθήσῃ ἕως τοῦ ᾅδου καταβήσῃ
Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you rejects Me; and whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”16 ἀκούων ὑμῶν ἐμοῦ ἀκούει καὶ ἀθετῶν ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ ἀθετεῖ δὲ ἐμὲ ἀθετῶν ἀθετεῖ τὸν ἀποστείλαντά με
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”17Ὑπέστρεψαν δὲ οἱ ἑβδομήκοντα ‹δύο› μετὰ χαρᾶς λέγοντες Κύριε καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια ὑποτάσσεται ἡμῖν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί σου
So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.18Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἐθεώρουν τὸν Σατανᾶν ὡς ἀστραπὴν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ πεσόντα
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you.19ἰδοὺ δέδωκα ὑμῖν τὴν ἐξουσίαν τοῦ πατεῖν ἐπάνω ὄφεων καὶ σκορπίων καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ ἐχθροῦ καὶ οὐδὲν ὑμᾶς οὐ μὴ ἀδικήσῃ*
Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”20πλὴν ἐν τούτῳ μὴ χαίρετε ὅτι τὰ πνεύματα ὑμῖν ὑποτάσσεται χαίρετε δὲ ὅτι τὰ ὀνόματα ὑμῶν ἐνγέγραπται ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
At that time Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.21Ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἠγαλλιάσατο [ἐν] τῷ Πνεύματι τῷ Ἁγίῳ καὶ εἶπεν Ἐξομολογοῦμαί σοι Πάτερ Κύριε τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆς ὅτι ἀπέκρυψας ταῦτα ἀπὸ σοφῶν καὶ συνετῶν καὶ ἀπεκάλυψας αὐτὰ νηπίοις ναί Πατήρ ὅτι οὕτως εὐδοκία ἐγένετο ἔμπροσθέν σου
All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.”22Πάντα μοι παρεδόθη ὑπὸ τοῦ Πατρός μου καὶ οὐδεὶς γινώσκει τίς ἐστιν Υἱὸς εἰ μὴ Πατήρ καὶ τίς ἐστιν Πατὴρ εἰ μὴ Υἱὸς καὶ ἐὰν βούληται Υἱὸς ἀποκαλύψαι
Then Jesus turned to the disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.23Καὶ στραφεὶς πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς κατ’ ἰδίαν εἶπεν Μακάριοι οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ οἱ βλέποντες βλέπετε
For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”24λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι πολλοὶ προφῆται καὶ βασιλεῖς ἠθέλησαν ἰδεῖν ὑμεῖς βλέπετε καὶ οὐκ εἶδαν καὶ ἀκοῦσαι ἀκούετε καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσαν
One day an expert in the law stood up to test Him. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”25Καὶ ἰδοὺ νομικός τις ἀνέστη ἐκπειράζων αὐτὸν λέγων Διδάσκαλε τί ποιήσας ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσω
“What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you read it?”26 δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Ἐν τῷ νόμῳ τί γέγραπται πῶς ἀναγινώσκεις
He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”27 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Ἀγαπήσεις Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρδίας σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ψυχῇ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ἰσχύϊ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ διανοίᾳ σου καὶ Τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν
“You have answered correctly,” Jesus said. “Do this and you will live.”28Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ὀρθῶς ἀπεκρίθης τοῦτο ποίει καὶ ζήσῃ
But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”29 δὲ θέλων δικαιῶσαι ἑαυτὸν εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν Καὶ τίς ἐστίν μου πλησίον
Jesus took up this question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.30Ὑπολαβὼν ‹δὲ› Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἄνθρωπός τις κατέβαινεν ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ εἰς Ἰεριχὼ καὶ λῃσταῖς περιέπεσεν οἳ καὶ ἐκδύσαντες αὐτὸν καὶ πληγὰς ἐπιθέντες ἀπῆλθον ἀφέντες ἡμιθανῆ
Now by chance a priest was going down the same road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.31Κατὰ συγκυρίαν δὲ ἱερεύς τις κατέβαινεν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐκείνῃ καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν ἀντιπαρῆλθεν
So too, when a Levite came to that spot and saw him, he passed by on the other side.32Ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ Λευίτης [γενόμενος] κατὰ τὸν τόπον ἐλθὼν καὶ ἰδὼν ἀντιπαρῆλθεν
But when a Samaritan on a journey came upon him, he looked at him and had compassion.33Σαμαρίτης δέ τις ὁδεύων ἦλθεν κατ’ αὐτὸν καὶ ἰδὼν ἐσπλαγχνίσθη
He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.34καὶ προσελθὼν κατέδησεν τὰ τραύματα αὐτοῦ ἐπιχέων ἔλαιον καὶ οἶνον ἐπιβιβάσας δὲ αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸ ἴδιον κτῆνος ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς πανδοχεῖον καὶ ἐπεμελήθη αὐτοῦ
The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Take care of him,’ he said, ‘and on my return I will repay you for any additional expense.’35Καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν αὔριον ἐκβαλὼν «δύο δηνάρια» ἔδωκεν τῷ πανδοχεῖ καὶ εἶπεν Ἐπιμελήθητι αὐτοῦ καὶ τι ἂν προσδαπανήσῃς ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ ἐπανέρχεσθαί με ἀποδώσω σοι
Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”36Τίς τούτων τῶν τριῶν πλησίον δοκεῖ σοι γεγονέναι τοῦ ἐμπεσόντος εἰς τοὺς λῃστάς
“The one who showed him mercy,” replied the expert in the law. Then Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”37 δὲ εἶπεν ποιήσας τὸ ἔλεος μετ’ αὐτοῦ Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Πορεύου καὶ σὺ ποίει ὁμοίως
As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.38Ἐν δὲ τῷ πορεύεσθαι αὐτοὺς αὐτὸς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς κώμην τινά γυνὴ δέ τις ὀνόματι Μάρθα ὑπεδέξατο αὐτὸν 〈εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν〉
She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message.39καὶ τῇδε ἦν ἀδελφὴ καλουμένη Μαριάμ καὶ παρακαθεσθεῖσα πρὸς τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Κυρίου ἤκουεν τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ
But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!”40 δὲ Μάρθα περιεσπᾶτο περὶ πολλὴν διακονίαν ἐπιστᾶσα δὲ εἶπεν Κύριε οὐ μέλει σοι ὅτι ἀδελφή μου μόνην με κατέλειπεν διακονεῖν εἰπὲ* οὖν αὐτῇ ἵνα μοι συναντιλάβηται
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things.41Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Κύριος Μάρθα Μάρθα μεριμνᾷς καὶ θορυβάζῃ περὶ πολλά
But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”42ὀλίγων δέ ἐστιν χρεία ἑνός Μαριὰμ γὰρ τὴν ἀγαθὴν μερίδα ἐξελέξατο ἥτις οὐκ ἀφαιρεθήσεται αὐτῆς
