The Birth of Jesus
(Matthew 1:18–25)

1  Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἐκείναις (those) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) δόγμα (that a decree) παρὰ (from) Καίσαρος (Caesar) Αὐγούστου (Augustus) ἀπογράφεσθαι (to register) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world). 2  αὕτη (This) ἀπογραφὴ (registration) πρώτη (first) ἐγένετο (took place) ἡγεμονεύοντος (in the governing) τῆς (-) Συρίας (of Syria) Κυρηνίου (of Quirinius). 3  καὶ (And) ἐπορεύοντο (were going) πάντες (all) ἀπογράφεσθαι (to be registered), ἕκαστος (each) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of themselves) πόλιν (city).

4  Ἀνέβη (Went up) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) ἐκ (out of) πόλεως (the city) Ναζαρὲθ (of Nazareth) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) Ἰουδαίαν (Judea) εἰς (to) πόλιν (the city) Δαυὶδ (of David) ἥτις (which) καλεῖται (is called) Βηθλεέμ (Bethlehem), διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) εἶναι (being) αὐτὸν (his) ἐξ (of) οἴκου (the house) καὶ (and) πατριᾶς (family) Δαυίδ (of David), 5  ἀπογράψασθαι (to register) σὺν (with) Μαριὰμ (Mary) τῇ (the one) ἐμνηστευμένῃ (betrothed) αὐτῷ (to him), οὔσῃ (she being) ἐγκύῳ (pregnant).

6  Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εἶναι (being) αὐτοὺς (of them) ἐκεῖ (there) ἐπλήσθησαν (were fulfilled) αἱ (that the) ἡμέραι (days) τοῦ (of the) τεκεῖν (giving birth) αὐτήν (of her), 7  καὶ (And) ἔτεκεν (she gave birth to) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (Son) αὐτῆς (of her) τὸν (the) πρωτότοκον (firstborn), καὶ (and) ἐσπαργάνωσεν (wrapped in swaddling cloths) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἀνέκλινεν (laid) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) φάτνῃ (a manger), διότι (because) οὐκ (not) ἦν (there was) αὐτοῖς (for them) τόπος (a place) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) καταλύματι (inn).

The Shepherds and the Angels

8  Καὶ (And) ποιμένες (shepherds) ἦσαν (were) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) χώρᾳ (region) τῇ (-) αὐτῇ (same) ἀγραυλοῦντες (lodging in the fields) καὶ (and) φυλάσσοντες (keeping) φυλακὰς (watch) τῆς (-) νυκτὸς (by night) ἐπὶ (over) τὴν (the) ποίμνην (flock) αὐτῶν (of them). 9  καὶ (And) ἄγγελος (an angel) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐπέστη (stood by) αὐτοῖς (them) καὶ (and) δόξα (the glory) Κυρίου (of the Lord) περιέλαμψεν (shone around) αὐτούς (them), καὶ (and) ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) φόβον (with fear) μέγαν (great). 10  καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel)· Μὴ (Not) φοβεῖσθε (fear)· ἰδοὺ (behold) γὰρ (for) εὐαγγελίζομαι (I bring good news) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) χαρὰν (of joy) μεγάλην (great), ἥτις (that) ἔσται (will be) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), 11  ὅτι (For) ἐτέχθη (was born) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) σήμερον (today) Σωτήρ (a Savior), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) Χριστὸς (Christ) Κύριος (the Lord), ἐν (in) πόλει (the City) Δαυίδ (of David). 12  καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this is) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign), εὑρήσετε (You⁺ will find) βρέφος (a baby) ἐσπαργανωμένον (wrapped in swaddling cloths) καὶ (and) κείμενον (lying) ἐν (in) φάτνῃ (a manger).

13  Καὶ (And) ἐξαίφνης (suddenly) ἐγένετο (there was) σὺν (with) τῷ (the) ἀγγέλῳ (angel) πλῆθος (a multitude) στρατιᾶς (of the host) οὐρανίου (heavenly) αἰνούντων (praising) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) καὶ (and) λεγόντων (saying)·

14  Δόξα (Glory) ἐν (in) ὑψίστοις (the highest) Θεῷ (to God)

καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) γῆς (earth) εἰρήνη (peace) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men) εὐδοκίας (with whom He is well pleased).

15  Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ὡς (as) ἀπῆλθον (went away) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them) εἰς (into) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels), οἱ (that the) ποιμένες (shepherds) ἐλάλουν (were saying) πρὸς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another)· Διέλθωμεν (Let us go through) δὴ (indeed) ἕως (as far as) Βηθλεὲμ (Bethlehem) καὶ (and) ἴδωμεν (let us see) τὸ (the) ῥῆμα (saying) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (that) γεγονὸς (has come to pass) ὃ (which) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐγνώρισεν (made known) ἡμῖν (to us).

16  Καὶ (And) ἦλθαν (they came) σπεύσαντες (having hurried), καὶ (and) ἀνεῦραν (found) τήν (-) τε (both) Μαριὰμ (Mary) καὶ (and) τὸν (-) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) βρέφος (baby) κείμενον (lying) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φάτνῃ (manger)· 17  ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now) ἐγνώρισαν (they made known) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) ῥήματος (saying) τοῦ (-) λαληθέντος (having been spoken) αὐτοῖς (to them) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) παιδίου (Child) τούτου (this). 18  καὶ (And) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) ἐθαύμασαν (marveled) περὶ (concerning) τῶν (the things) λαληθέντων (having been spoken) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) ποιμένων (shepherds) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them)· 19  ἡ (-) δὲ (But) Μαρία (Mary) πάντα (all) συνετήρει (was preserving) τὰ (-) ῥήματα (matters) ταῦτα (these) συμβάλλουσα (pondering) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτῆς (of her).

20  Καὶ (And) ὑπέστρεψαν (returned) οἱ (the) ποιμένες (shepherds) δοξάζοντες (glorifying) καὶ (and) αἰνοῦντες (praising) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐπὶ (for) πᾶσιν (all things) οἷς (that) ἤκουσαν (they heard) καὶ (and) εἶδον (saw) καθὼς (just as) ἐλαλήθη (it was said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them).

Jesus Presented at the Temple

21  Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐπλήσθησαν (were fulfilled) ἡμέραι (days) ὀκτὼ (eight) τοῦ (-) περιτεμεῖν (to circumcise) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (then) ἐκλήθη (was called) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), τὸ (which) κληθὲν (He had been called) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) ἀγγέλου (angel) πρὸ (before) τοῦ (the) συλλημφθῆναι (being conceived) αὐτὸν (of Him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κοιλίᾳ (womb).

22  Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐπλήσθησαν (were fulfilled) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) τοῦ (of the) καθαρισμοῦ (purification) αὐτῶν (of them) κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) νόμον (Law) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), ἀνήγαγον (they brought up) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) παραστῆσαι (to present) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), 23  καθὼς (just as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ἐν (in) νόμῳ (the Law) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ὅτι (-) Πᾶν (Every) ἄρσεν (male) διανοῖγον (opening) μήτραν (a womb) ἅγιον (holy) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) κληθήσεται (will be called), 24  καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to give) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (that) εἰρημένον (said) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (Law) Κυρίου (of the Lord), Ζεῦγος (A pair) τρυγόνων (of turtledoves) ἢ (or) δύο (two) νοσσοὺς (young) περιστερῶν (pigeons).

The Prophecy of Simeon

25  Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἦν (there was) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ᾧ (whose) ὄνομα (name was) Συμεών (Simeon), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this) δίκαιος (was righteous) καὶ (and) εὐλαβής (devout), προσδεχόμενος (waiting for) παράκλησιν (the consolation) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), καὶ (and) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) ἦν (was) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (him)· 26  καὶ (And) ἦν (it was) αὐτῷ (to him) κεχρηματισμένον (divinely revealed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) τοῦ (-) Ἁγίου (Holy) μὴ (not) ἰδεῖν (to see) θάνατον (death) πρὶν (before) ἢ (-) ἂν (-) ἴδῃ (he should see) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) Κυρίου (of the Lord). 27  καὶ (And) ἦλθεν (he went) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple)· καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) εἰσαγαγεῖν (bringing in) τοὺς (the) γονεῖς (parents) τὸ (the) παιδίον (child) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τοῦ (-) ποιῆσαι (to do) αὐτοὺς (for them) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (that) εἰθισμένον (having become customary) τοῦ (by the) νόμου (Law) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him), 28  καὶ (then) αὐτὸς (he) ἐδέξατο (took) αὐτὸ (Him) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) ἀγκάλας (arms) καὶ (and) εὐλόγησεν (blessed) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (he said)·

29  Νῦν (Now) ἀπολύεις (You dismiss) τὸν (the) δοῦλόν (servant) σου (of You), Δέσποτα (Lord), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the)

ῥῆμά (word) σου (of You) ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace)·

30  ὅτι (for) εἶδον (saw) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοί (eyes) μου (of me) τὸ (the) σωτήριόν (salvation) σου (of You),

31  ὃ (which) ἡτοίμασας (You prepared) κατὰ (before) πρόσωπον (the face) πάντων (of all) τῶν (the) λαῶν (peoples),

32  φῶς (a light) εἰς (to) ἀποκάλυψιν (the uncovering) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles)

καὶ (and) δόξαν (the glory) λαοῦ (of the people) σου (of You) Ἰσραήλ (Israel).

33  Καὶ (And) ἦν (were) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) θαυμάζοντες (marveling) ἐπὶ (at) τοῖς (the things) λαλουμένοις (having been spoken) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him). 34  καὶ (And) εὐλόγησεν (blessed) αὐτοὺς (them) Συμεὼν (Simeon) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) Μαριὰμ (Mary) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him)·

Ἰδοὺ (Behold) οὗτος (this Child) κεῖται (is appointed)

εἰς (for) πτῶσιν (the falling) καὶ (and) ἀνάστασιν (rising up) πολλῶν (of many) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel)

καὶ (and) εἰς (for) σημεῖον (a sign) ἀντιλεγόμενον (spoken against)—

35  καὶ (and) σοῦ (of you) δὲ (also) αὐτῆς (of her) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (soul) διελεύσεται (will pass through) ῥομφαία (a sword)—,

ὅπως (so that) ἂν (-) ἀποκαλυφθῶσιν (may be revealed) ἐκ (of) πολλῶν (many) καρδιῶν (hearts) διαλογισμοί (the thoughts).

The Prophecy of Anna

36  Καὶ (And) ἦν (there was) Ἅννα (Anna) προφῆτις (a prophetess), θυγάτηρ (daughter) Φανουήλ (of Phanuel), ἐκ (of) φυλῆς (the tribe) Ἀσήρ (of Asher)· αὕτη (she) προβεβηκυῖα (was advanced) ἐν (in) ἡμέραις (days) πολλαῖς (many), ζήσασα (having lived) μετὰ (with) ἀνδρὸς (a husband) ἔτη (years) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) παρθενίας (virginity) αὐτῆς (of her), 37  καὶ (and) αὐτὴ (she) χήρα (was a widow) ἕως (until) ἐτῶν (years) ὀγδοήκοντα (eighty and) τεσσάρων (four), ἣ (who) οὐκ (not) ἀφίστατο (departed) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple) νηστείαις (with fastings) καὶ (and) δεήσεσιν (petitions) λατρεύουσα (serving) νύκτα (night) καὶ (and) ἡμέραν (day).

38  καὶ (And) αὐτῇ (she) τῇ (at that) ὥρᾳ (hour) ἐπιστᾶσα (having come up) ἀνθωμολογεῖτο (was giving praise) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) καὶ (and) ἐλάλει (was speaking) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him) πᾶσιν (to all) τοῖς (those) προσδεχομένοις (waiting for) λύτρωσιν (the redemption) Ἰερουσαλήμ (of Jerusalem).

The Return to Nazareth
(Matthew 2:19–23)

39  Καὶ (And) ὡς (when) ἐτέλεσαν (they accomplished) πάντα (everything) τὰ (-) κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) νόμον (Law) Κυρίου (of the Lord), ἐπέστρεψαν (they returned) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) Γαλιλαίαν (Galilee) εἰς (to the) πόλιν (city) ἑαυτῶν (of them) Ναζαρέθ (Nazareth).

40  Τὸ (-) δὲ (And) παιδίον (the Child) ηὔξανεν (continued to grow) καὶ (and) ἐκραταιοῦτο (become strong) πληρούμενον (being filled) σοφίᾳ (with wisdom), καὶ (and) χάρις (the grace) Θεοῦ (of God) ἦν (was) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτό (Him).

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

41  Καὶ (And) ἐπορεύοντο (were going) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of Him) κατ’ (every) ἔτος (year) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) τῇ (for the) ἑορτῇ (Feast) τοῦ (of the) πάσχα (Passover). 42  Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐγένετο (He was) ἐτῶν (years old) δώδεκα (twelve), ἀναβαινόντων (on the having gone up) αὐτῶν (of them) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) ἔθος (custom) τῆς (of the) ἑορτῆς (Feast), 43  καὶ (and) τελειωσάντων (having completed) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὑποστρέφειν (returning) αὐτοὺς (of them) ὑπέμεινεν (remained behind) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὁ (the) παῖς (boy) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (knew) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of Him). 44  νομίσαντες (Having supposed) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (Him) εἶναι (to be) ἐν (in) τῇ (their) συνοδίᾳ (company) ἦλθον (they went) ἡμέρας (a day’s) ὁδὸν (journey) καὶ (and) ἀνεζήτουν (began seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) συγγενεῦσιν (relatives) καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) γνωστοῖς (acquaintances),

45  καὶ (and) μὴ (not) εὑρόντες (having found Him) ὑπέστρεψαν (they returned) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ἀναζητοῦντες (seeking) αὐτόν (Him). 46  Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) μετὰ (after) ἡμέρας (days) τρεῖς (three) εὗρον (that they found) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) καθεζόμενον (sitting) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) τῶν (of the) διδασκάλων (teachers) καὶ (both) ἀκούοντα (hearing) αὐτῶν (them) καὶ (and) ἐπερωτῶντα (questioning) αὐτούς (them)· 47  ἐξίσταντο (Were amazed) δὲ (then) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) ἀκούοντες (hearing) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) συνέσει (understanding) καὶ (and) ταῖς (the) ἀποκρίσεσιν (answers) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

48  Καὶ (And) ἰδόντες (having seen) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐξεπλάγησαν (they were astonished), καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· Τέκνον (Child), τί (why) ἐποίησας (did You do) ἡμῖν (to us) οὕτως (thus)? ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὁ (the) πατήρ (father) σου (of You) κἀγὼ (and I) ὀδυνώμενοι (being distressed) ἐζητοῦμέν (were seeking) σε (You). ezētoumen se

49  Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them)· Τί (Why is it) ὅτι (that) ἐζητεῖτέ (you⁺ were seeking) με (Me)? οὐκ (Not) ᾔδειτε (did you⁺ know) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the house) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) δεῖ (it is necessary) εἶναί (to be) με (for Me)? 50  καὶ (And) αὐτοὶ (they) οὐ (not) συνῆκαν (understood) τὸ (the) ῥῆμα (word) ὃ (that) ἐλάλησεν (He spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them).

51  Καὶ (And) κατέβη (He went down) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them) καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (to) Ναζαρὲθ (Nazareth), καὶ (and) ἦν (He was) ὑποτασσόμενος (subject) αὐτοῖς (to them). καὶ (And) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him) διετήρει (was keeping) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ῥήματα (matters) ταῦτα (these) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτῆς (of her).

52  Καὶ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) προέκοπτεν (continued to advance) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) καὶ (and) ἡλικίᾳ (stature) καὶ (and) χάριτι (in favor) παρὰ (with) Θεῷ (God) καὶ (and) ἀνθρώποις (men).
