The Beast from the Sea
(Daniel 7:1–8)

1  Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) θαλάσσης (sea) θηρίον (a beast) ἀναβαῖνον (coming up), ἔχον (having) κέρατα (horns) δέκα (ten) καὶ (and) κεφαλὰς (heads) ἑπτά (seven), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) τῶν (the) κεράτων (horns) αὐτοῦ (of it) δέκα (ten) διαδήματα (diadems), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰς (the) κεφαλὰς (heads) αὐτοῦ (of it) ὀνόματα (names) βλασφημίας (of blasphemy). 2  καὶ (And) τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast) ὃ (that) εἶδον (I saw) ἦν (was) ὅμοιον (like) παρδάλει (a leopard), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πόδες (feet) αὐτοῦ (of it) ὡς (like) ἄρκου (a bear’s), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of it) ὡς (like) στόμα (the mouth) λέοντος (of a lion). καὶ (And) ἔδωκεν (gave) αὐτῷ (to it) ὁ (the) δράκων (dragon) τὴν (the) δύναμιν (power) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) θρόνον (throne) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἐξουσίαν (authority) μεγάλην (great).

3  Καὶ (And) μίαν (one) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) κεφαλῶν (heads) αὐτοῦ (of it) ὡς (was as) ἐσφαγμένην (having been slain) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death), καὶ (And) ἡ (the) πληγὴ (wound) τοῦ (of) θανάτου (death) αὐτοῦ (of it) ἐθεραπεύθη (was healed). καὶ (and) ἐθαυμάσθη (marveled) ὅλη (whole) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) ὀπίσω (after) τοῦ (the) θηρίου (beast), 4  καὶ (And) προσεκύνησαν (they worshiped) τῷ (the) δράκοντι (dragon) ὅτι (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) τὴν (-) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τῷ (to the) θηρίῳ (beast), καὶ (and) προσεκύνησαν (they worshiped) τῷ (the) θηρίῳ (beast) λέγοντες (saying)· Τίς (Who) ὅμοιος (is like) τῷ (the) θηρίῳ (beast), καὶ (And) τίς (who) δύναται (is able) πολεμῆσαι (to war) μετ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (it)?

5  Καὶ (And) ἐδόθη (was given) αὐτῷ (to it) στόμα (a mouth) λαλοῦν (speaking) μεγάλα (great things) καὶ (and) βλασφημίας (blasphemies), καὶ (and) ἐδόθη (was given) αὐτῷ (to it) ἐξουσία (authority) ποιῆσαι (to act) μῆνας (months) τεσσεράκοντα (forty) καὶ (and) δύο (two). 6  καὶ (And) ἤνοιξεν (it opened) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of it) εἰς (for) βλασφημίας (blasphemies) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), βλασφημῆσαι (to blaspheme) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) σκηνὴν (tabernacle) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τοὺς (those) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven) σκηνοῦντας (tabernacling).

7  Καὶ (And) ἐδόθη (there was given) αὐτῷ (to it) ποιῆσαι (to make) πόλεμον (war) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἁγίων (saints) καὶ (and) νικῆσαι (to overcome) αὐτούς (them), καὶ (And) ἐδόθη (was given) αὐτῷ (to it) ἐξουσία (authority) ἐπὶ (over) πᾶσαν (every) φυλὴν (tribe) καὶ (and) λαὸν (people) καὶ (and) γλῶσσαν (tongue) καὶ (and) ἔθνος (nation). 8  καὶ (And) προσκυνήσουσιν (will worship) αὐτὸν (it) πάντες (all) οἱ (-) κατοικοῦντες (dwelling) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), οὗ (of whom) οὐ (not) γέγραπται (has been written) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (the name) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) βιβλίῳ (book) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb) τοῦ (-) ἐσφαγμένου (having been slain) ἀπὸ (from) καταβολῆς (the foundation) κόσμου (of the world).

9  Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἔχει (has) οὖς (an ear), ἀκουσάτω (let him hear).

10  Εἴ (If) τις (anyone is) εἰς (into) αἰχμαλωσίαν (captivity),

εἰς (into) αἰχμαλωσίαν (captivity) ὑπάγει (he goes)·

εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἐν (with) μαχαίρῃ (the sword) ἀποκτανθῆναι (is to be killed),

δεῖ (it is necessary for) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (with) μαχαίρῃ (the sword) ἀποκτανθῆναι (to be killed).

Ὧδέ (Here) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ὑπομονὴ (endurance) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints).

The Beast from the Earth

11  Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) ἄλλο (another) θηρίον (beast) ἀναβαῖνον (coming up) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), καὶ (and) εἶχεν (it had) κέρατα (horns) δύο (two) ὅμοια (like) ἀρνίῳ (a lamb), καὶ (and) ἐλάλει (it was speaking) ὡς (like) δράκων (a dragon). 12  καὶ (And) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τοῦ (of the) πρώτου (first) θηρίου (beast) πᾶσαν (all) ποιεῖ (it exercises) ἐνώπιον (in the presence) αὐτοῦ (of it). καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (it causes) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) ἵνα (that) προσκυνήσουσιν (they will worship) τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast) τὸ (-) πρῶτον (first), οὗ (of whom) ἐθεραπεύθη (was healed) ἡ (the) πληγὴ (wound) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (fatal) αὐτοῦ (of it).

13  Καὶ (And) ποιεῖ (it does) σημεῖα (signs) μεγάλα (great), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (even) πῦρ (fire) ποιῇ (it should cause) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καταβαίνειν (to come down) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth) ἐνώπιον (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men). 14  καὶ (And) πλανᾷ (it deceives) τοὺς (those) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) διὰ (by) τὰ (the) σημεῖα (signs) ἃ (that) ἐδόθη (were given) αὐτῷ (to it) ποιῆσαι (to do) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) θηρίου (beast), λέγων (telling) τοῖς (those) κατοικοῦσιν (dwelling) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) ποιῆσαι (to make) εἰκόνα (an image) τῷ (to the) θηρίῳ (beast), ὃς (that) ἔχει (has) τὴν (the) πληγὴν (wound) τῆς (of the) μαχαίρης (sword) καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (lived). 15  καὶ (And) ἐδόθη (there was given) αὐτῷ (to it) δοῦναι (to give) πνεῦμα (breath) τῇ (to the) εἰκόνι (image) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) λαλήσῃ (should speak) ἡ (the) εἰκὼν (image) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast), καὶ (and) ποιήσῃ (should cause) ἵνα (that) ὅσοι (as many as) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) προσκυνήσωσιν (would worship) τῇ (the) εἰκόνι (image) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast) ἀποκτανθῶσιν (would be killed).

The Mark of the Beast

16  Καὶ (And) ποιεῖ (it causes) πάντας (all), τοὺς (the) μικροὺς (small) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) μεγάλους (great), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) πλουσίους (rich) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) πτωχούς (poor), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἐλευθέρους (free) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants), ἵνα (that) δῶσιν (it should give) αὐτοῖς (them) χάραγμα (a mark) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) αὐτῶν (of them) τῆς (-) δεξιᾶς (right) ἢ (or) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) μέτωπον (forehead) αὐτῶν (of them), 17  καὶ (and) ἵνα (that) μή (no) τις (one) δύνηται (may be able) ἀγοράσαι (to buy) ἢ (or) πωλῆσαι (to sell) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the one) ἔχων (having) τὸ (the) χάραγμα (mark) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast) ἢ (or) τὸν (the) ἀριθμὸν (number) τοῦ (of the) ὀνόματος (name) αὐτοῦ (of it).

18  Ὧδε (Here) ἡ (the) σοφία (wisdom) ἐστίν (is). ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) νοῦν (understanding) ψηφισάτω (let him count) τὸν (the) ἀριθμὸν (number) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast)· ἀριθμὸς (number) γὰρ (for) ἀνθρώπου (a man’s) ἐστίν (it is). καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἀριθμὸς (number is) αὐτοῦ (of it) ἑξακόσιοι (six hundred) ἑξήκοντα (sixty) ἕξ (six).
