1 Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate. And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. 2 So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews? “You have said so, Jesus replied. And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest <i>it</i>. Pilate questioned Him: “<i>So</i> You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “<i>It is as</i> you say.” “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
3 And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. And the chief priests accused him of many things. And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing. And the chief priests <i>started</i> accusing Him of many things. The chief priests accused him of many things.
4 Then Pilate questioned Him again, Have You no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against You! And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? 5 But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply. But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed. But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled. But Jesus said nothing further in answer, so Pilate was amazed. But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
6 Now it was Pilate’s custom at the feast to release to the people a prisoner of their choosing. Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. Now at <i>that</i> feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. Now at <i>the Passover</i> Feast he used to release for them <i>any</i> one prisoner whom they requested. Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.
7 And a man named Barabbas was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And there was <i>one</i> named Barabbas, <i>which lay</i> bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. And the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.
8 So the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to keep his custom. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. And the multitude crying aloud began to desire <i>him to do</i> as he had ever done unto them. And the crowd went up and began asking <i>Pilate to do</i> as he had been accustomed to do for them. 13 And they shouted back, “Crucify Him! And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” And they cried out again, Crucify him. They shouted back, “Crucify Him!” “Crucify him!” they shouted.
14 “Why? asked Pilate. “What evil has He done? But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him! And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him. But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!” “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15 And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified. So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. And <i>so</i> Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged <i>him</i>, to be crucified. Intent on satisfying the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified. Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. 16 Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called the whole company together. 31 In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking <i>Him</i> among themselves and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself! In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself!
32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe! And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him. Let <i>this</i> Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him. 34 At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “ELOI, ELOI, LEMA SABAKTANEI?” which is translated, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
35 When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said, “Behold, He is calling Elijah. And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And some of them that stood by, when they heard <i>it</i>, said, Behold, he calleth Elias. And when some of the bystanders heard <i>Him,</i> they <i>began</i> saying, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!” When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine. He put it on a reed and held it up for Jesus to drink, saying, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down. And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put <i>it</i> on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down. And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. But Jesus let out a loud cry, and died. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counseller, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself also waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.
44 Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if this was so. Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. 46 So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus, wrapped it in the cloth, and placed it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock.
