The Plot to Kill Jesus

1Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass), ὅτε (when) ἐτέλεσεν (had finished) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), εἶπεν (He said) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), 2“Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) μετὰ (after) δύο (two) ἡμέρας (days) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover) γίνεται (takes place), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδίδοται (is delivered) εἰς (over) τὸ (-) σταυρωθῆναι (to be crucified).”

3Τότε (Then) συνήχθησαν (were gathered together) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) αὐλὴν (courtyard) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest), τοῦ (who) λεγομένου (is called) Καϊάφα (Caiaphas), 4καὶ (and) συνεβουλεύσαντο (they plotted together), ἵνα (in order that) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) δόλῳ (by guile) κρατήσωσιν (they might seize) καὶ (and) ἀποκτείνωσιν (kill). 5ἔλεγον (They were saying) δέ (however), “Μὴ (Not) ἐν (during) τῇ (the) ἑορτῇ (feast), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) θόρυβος (a riot) γένηται (there be) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people).”

6Τοῦ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) γενομένου (having been) ἐν (in) Βηθανίᾳ (Bethany) ἐν (in the) οἰκίᾳ (house) Σίμωνος (of Simon) τοῦ (the) λεπροῦ (leper),a 7προσῆλθεν (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) γυνὴ (a woman), ἔχουσα (having) ἀλάβαστρον (an alabaster flask) μύρου (fragrant oil) βαρυτίμου (very costly), καὶ (and) κατέχεεν (poured it) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) κεφαλῆς (head) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀνακειμένου (as He is reclining).

8Ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (then), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἠγανάκτησαν (became indignant), λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰς (For what) τί (purpose) ἡ (is the) ἀπώλεια (waste) αὕτη (this)? 9ἐδύνατο (Could) γὰρ (for) τοῦτο (this) πραθῆναι (have been sold) πολλοῦ (for much), καὶ (and) δοθῆναι (have been given) πτωχοῖς (to the poor).”

10Γνοὺς (Having known this) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (Why) κόπους (trouble) παρέχετε (do you cause) τῇ (to the) γυναικί (woman)? ἔργον (A work) γὰρ (for) καλὸν (beautiful) ἠργάσατο (she did) εἰς (to) ἐμέ (Me). 11πάντοτε (Always) γὰρ (for) τοὺς (the) πτωχοὺς (poor) ἔχετε (you have) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (you);b ἐμὲ (Me) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) πάντοτε (always) ἔχετε (you have). 12βαλοῦσα (In pouring) γὰρ (for) αὕτη (this woman) τὸ (the) μύρον (fragrant oil) τοῦτο (this) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) σώματός (body) μου (of Me), πρὸς (for) τὸ (the) ἐνταφιάσαι (burial) με (of Me) ἐποίησεν (she did it). 13ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅπου (wherever) ἐὰν (if) κηρυχθῇ (shall be proclaimed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦτο (this) ἐν (in) ὅλῳ (all) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), λαληθήσεται (will be spoken of) καὶ (also) ὃ (that which) ἐποίησεν (did) αὕτη (this woman), εἰς (for) μνημόσυνον (a memorial) αὐτῆς (of her).”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

14Τότε (Then) πορευθεὶς (having gone) εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) δώδεκα (Twelve), ὁ (the one) λεγόμενος (being called) Ἰούδας (Judas) Ἰσκαριώτης (Iscariot), πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), 15εἶπεν (he said), “Τί (What) θέλετέ (are you willing) μοι (me) δοῦναι (to give), κἀγὼ (and I) ὑμῖν (to you) παραδώσω (will betray) αὐτόν (Him)?” οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἔστησαν (they appointed) αὐτῷ (to him) τριάκοντα (thirty) ἀργύρια (pieces of silver). 16καὶ (And) ἀπὸ (from) τότε (that time), ἐζήτει (he was seeking) εὐκαιρίαν (an opportunity) ἵνα (that) αὐτὸν (Him) παραδῷ (he might betray).

Preparing the Passover

17Τῇ (On the) δὲ (now) πρώτῃ (first day) τῶν (of the) ἀζύμων (unleavened bread), προσῆλθον (came) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), λέγοντες (saying), “Ποῦ (Where) θέλεις (wish you that) ἑτοιμάσωμέν (we should prepare) σοι (for You) φαγεῖν (to eat) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover)?”

18Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Ὑπάγετε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city) πρὸς (unto) τὸν (a) δεῖνα (certain man) καὶ (and) εἴπατε (tell) αὐτῷ (him) Ὁ (the) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher) λέγει (says), ‘Ὁ (The) καιρός (time) μου (of Me) ἐγγύς (near) ἐστιν (is); πρὸς (with) σὲ (you) ποιῶ (I will keep) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) μου (of Me).’” 19καὶ (And) ἐποίησαν (did) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ὡς (as) συνέταξεν (directed) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἡτοίμασαν (prepared) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover).

20Ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (now) γενομένης (having arrived), ἀνέκειτο (He was reclining) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) δώδεκα (twelve) μαθητῶν (disciples).c 21καὶ (And as) ἐσθιόντων (they were eating), αὐτῶν (to them) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) εἷς (one) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) παραδώσει (will betray) με (Me).”

22Καὶ (And) λυπούμενοι (being grieved) σφόδρα (exceedingly), ἤρξαντο (they began) λέγειν (to say) αὐτῷ (to Him), εἷς (one) ἕκαστος (each), “Μήτι (Not) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (is it), Κύριε (Lord)?”

23Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Ὁ (The one) ἐμβάψας (having dipped) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) τρυβλίῳ (dish), οὗτός (he) με (Me) παραδώσει (will betray). 24ὁ (-) μὲν (Indeed) Υἱὸς (the Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ὑπάγει (goes) καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) περὶ (about) αὐτοῦ (Him); οὐαὶ (woe) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) ἀνθρώπῳ (the man) ἐκείνῳ (to that) δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδίδοται (is betrayed). καλὸν (Better) ἦν (would it be) αὐτῷ (for him) εἰ (if) οὐκ (not) ἐγεννήθη (had been born) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκεῖνος (that).”

25Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) Ἰούδας (Judas), ὁ (who) παραδιδοὺς (was betraying) αὐτὸν (Him), εἶπεν (said), “Μήτι (Not) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (is it), ῥαββί (Rabbi)?”

Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Σὺ (You) εἶπας (have said).”

The Last Supper

26Ἐσθιόντων (As they were eating) δὲ (now) αὐτῶν (of them), λαβὼν (having taken) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἄρτον (bread), καὶ (and) εὐλογήσας (having blessed), ἔκλασεν (broke it), καὶ (and) δοὺς (having given) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples), εἶπεν (He said), “Λάβετε (Take), φάγετε (eat); τοῦτό (this) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) σῶμά (body) μου (of Me).”

27Καὶ (And) λαβὼν (having taken) ποτήριον (a cup) καὶ (and) εὐχαριστήσας (having given thanks), ἔδωκεν (He gave it) αὐτοῖς (to them), λέγων (saying), “Πίετε (Drink) ἐξ (of) αὐτοῦ (it), πάντες (all of you). 28τοῦτο (This) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) αἷμά (blood) μου (of Me), τῆς (of the) διαθήκης (covenant),d τὸ (-) περὶ (for) πολλῶν (many) ἐκχυννόμενον (being poured out) εἰς (for) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins). 29λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) πίω (will I drink), ἀπ’ (from) ἄρτι (now), ἐκ (of) τούτου (this) τοῦ (the) γενήματος (fruit) τῆς (of the) ἀμπέλου (vine), ἕως (until) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἐκείνης (that), ὅταν (when) αὐτὸ (it) πίνω (I drink) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) καινὸν (anew) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me).”

30Καὶ (And) ὑμνήσαντες (having sung a hymn), ἐξῆλθον (they went out) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives).

Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial
(Mark 14:27-31; Luke 22:31-38; John 13:36-38)

31Τότε (Then) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πάντες (All) ὑμεῖς (you) σκανδαλισθήσεσθε (will fall away) ἐν (because of) ἐμοὶ (Me) ἐν (during) τῇ (the) νυκτὶ (night) ταύτῃ (this). γέγραπται (It has been written) γάρ (for):

‘Πατάξω (I will strike) τὸν (the) ποιμένα (shepherd),

Καὶ (and) διασκορπισθήσονται (will be scattered) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) τῆς (of the) ποίμνης (flock).’e

32Μετὰ (After) δὲ (however) τὸ (-) ἐγερθῆναί (being raised), με (I) προάξω (will go before) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) Γαλιλαίαν (Galilee).”

33Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Εἰ (If) πάντες (all) σκανδαλισθήσονται (will fall away) ἐν (because of) σοί (You), ἐγὼ (I) οὐδέποτε (never) σκανδαλισθήσομαι (will fall away).”

34Ἔφη (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐν (during) ταύτῃ (this) τῇ (-) νυκτὶ (night), πρὶν (before the) ἀλέκτορα (rooster) φωνῆσαι (crowing), τρὶς (three times) ἀπαρνήσῃ (you will deny) με (Me).”

35Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter), “Κἂν (Even if) δέῃ (it were necessary for) με (me) σὺν (with) σοὶ (You) ἀποθανεῖν (to die), οὐ (no) μή (not) σε (You) ἀπαρνήσομαι (will I deny).” ὁμοίως (Likewise) καὶ (also), πάντες (all) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) εἶπαν (said).

Jesus Prays at Gethsemane
(Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46)

36Τότε (Then) ἔρχεται (comes) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (to) χωρίον (a place) λεγόμενον (called) Γεθσημανὶ (Gethsemane), καὶ (and) λέγει (He says) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples), “Καθίσατε (Sit) αὐτοῦ (here), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away) ἐκεῖ (over there), προσεύξωμαι (I shall pray).”

37Καὶ (And) παραλαβὼν (having taken with Him) τὸν (-) Πέτρον (Peter) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) υἱοὺς (sons) Ζεβεδαίου (of Zebedee), ἤρξατο (He began) λυπεῖσθαι (to be sorrowful) καὶ (and) ἀδημονεῖν (deeply distressed). 38τότε (Then) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Περίλυπός (Very sorrowful) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me), ἕως (even to) θανάτου (death); μείνατε (remain) ὧδε (here) καὶ (and) γρηγορεῖτε (watch) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me).”

39Καὶ (And) προελθὼν (having gone forward) μικρὸν (a little), ἔπεσεν (He fell) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him), προσευχόμενος (praying), καὶ (and) λέγων (saying), “Πάτερ (Father) μου (of Me), εἰ (if) δυνατόν (possible) ἐστιν (it is), παρελθάτω (let pass) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me) τὸ (the) ποτήριον (cup) τοῦτο (this). πλὴν (Nevertheless) οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) ἐγὼ (I) θέλω (will), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) σύ (You).”

40Καὶ (And) ἔρχεται (He comes) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) καὶ (and) εὑρίσκει (finds) αὐτοὺς (them) καθεύδοντας (sleeping). καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Οὕτως (Thus) οὐκ (not) ἰσχύσατε (were you able) μίαν (one) ὥραν (hour) γρηγορῆσαι (to watch) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me)? 41γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (you enter) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation). τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πνεῦμα (spirit) πρόθυμον (is willing), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) σὰρξ (the flesh) ἀσθενής (weak).”

42Πάλιν (Again) ἐκ (for) δευτέρου (a second time) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), προσηύξατο (He prayed), λέγων (saying), “Πάτερ (Father) μου (of Me), εἰ (if) οὐ (not) δύναται (is possible) τοῦτο (this) παρελθεῖν (to pass) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) αὐτὸ (it) πίω (I drink), γενηθήτω (be done) τὸ (the) θέλημά (will) σου (of You).” 43καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come) πάλιν (again), εὗρεν (He finds) αὐτοὺς (them) καθεύδοντας (sleeping), ἦσαν (were) γὰρ (for) αὐτῶν (of them) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) βεβαρημένοι (heavy).

44Καὶ (And) ἀφεὶς (having left) αὐτοὺς (them) πάλιν (again), ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), προσηύξατο (He prayed) ἐκ (for) τρίτου (the third time), τὸν (the) αὐτὸν (same) λόγον (thing) εἰπὼν (having said) πάλιν (again). 45τότε (Then) ἔρχεται (He comes) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Καθεύδετε (Sleep) ‹τὸ› (-) λοιπὸν (later on) καὶ (and) ἀναπαύεσθε (take your rest). ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἤγγικεν (has drawn near) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδίδοται (is betrayed) εἰς (into) χεῖρας (the hands) ἁμαρτωλῶν (of sinners). 46ἐγείρεσθε (Rise up), ἄγωμεν (let us go)! ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἤγγικεν (has drawn near) ὁ (he who) παραδιδούς (is betraying) με (Me)!”

The Betrayal of Jesus
(Mark 14:43-52; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:1-14)

47Καὶ (And) ἔτι (yet) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λαλοῦντος (as He is speaking), ἰδοὺ (behold), Ἰούδας (Judas), εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) δώδεκα (Twelve), ἦλθεν (came), καὶ (and) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ὄχλος (a crowd) πολὺς (great), μετὰ (with) μαχαιρῶν (swords) καὶ (and) ξύλων (clubs), ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) καὶ (and) πρεσβυτέρων (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people).

48Ὁ (The one) δὲ (then) παραδιδοὺς (betraying) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔδωκεν (gave) αὐτοῖς (them) σημεῖον (a sign), λέγων (saying), “Ὃν (Whomever) ἂν (-) φιλήσω (I shall kiss), αὐτός (He) ἐστιν (it is); κρατήσατε (seize) αὐτόν (Him).” 49καὶ (And) εὐθέως (immediately) προσελθὼν (having come up) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), εἶπεν (he said), “Χαῖρε (Greetings), ῥαββί (Rabbi),” καὶ (and) κατεφίλησεν (kissed) αὐτόν (Him).

50Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἑταῖρε (Friend), ἐφ’ (for) ὃ (what) πάρει (are you come)?”f

Τότε (Then) προσελθόντες (having come to him), ἐπέβαλον (they laid) τὰς (-) χεῖρας (hands) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἐκράτησαν (seized) αὐτόν (Him). 51καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), εἷς (one) τῶν (of those) μετὰ (with) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἐκτείνας (having stretched out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand), ἀπέσπασεν (drew) τὴν (the) μάχαιραν (sword) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) πατάξας (having struck) τὸν (the) δοῦλον (servant) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest), ἀφεῖλεν (cut off) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὸ (the) ὠτίον (ear).

52Τότε (Then) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀπόστρεψον (Return) τὴν (the) μάχαιράν (sword) σου (of you) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) αὐτῆς (of it); πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) οἱ (those) λαβόντες (having taken) μάχαιραν (the sword), ἐν (by) μαχαίρῃ (the sword) ἀπολοῦνται (will perish). 53ἢ (Or) δοκεῖς (think you) ὅτι (that) οὐ (not) δύναμαι (I am able) παρακαλέσαι (to call upon) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) παραστήσει (He will furnish) μοι (to Me) ἄρτι (presently) πλείω (more than) δώδεκα (twelve) λεγιῶνας (legions) ἀγγέλων (of angels)? 54πῶς (How) οὖν (then) πληρωθῶσιν (should be fulfilled) αἱ (the) γραφαὶ (Scriptures), ὅτι (that) οὕτως (so) δεῖ (it must) γενέσθαι (be)?”

55Ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour), εἶπεν (said) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds), “Ὡς (As) ἐπὶ (against) λῃστὴν (a robber) ἐξήλθατε (did you come out) μετὰ (with) μαχαιρῶν (swords) καὶ (and) ξύλων (clubs) συλλαβεῖν (to capture) με (Me)? καθ’ (Every) ἡμέραν (day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) ἐκαθεζόμην (I was sitting) διδάσκων (teaching), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐκρατήσατέ (you did seize) με (Me). 56Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (then) ὅλον (all) γέγονεν (is come to pass), ἵνα (that) πληρωθῶσιν (might be fulfilled) αἱ (the) γραφαὶ (Scriptures) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets).”

Τότε (Then) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) πάντες (all), ἀφέντες (having forsaken) αὐτὸν (Him), ἔφυγον (fled).

57Οἱ (Those) δὲ (then) κρατήσαντες (having seized) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀπήγαγον (led Him away) πρὸς (to) Καϊάφαν (Caiaphas), τὸν (the) ἀρχιερέα (high priest), ὅπου (where) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) συνήχθησαν (were assembled). 58ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πέτρος (Peter) ἠκολούθει (was following) αὐτῷ (Him) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar), ἕως (even) τῆς (to the) αὐλῆς (court) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest). καὶ (And) εἰσελθὼν (having entered) ἔσω (within), ἐκάθητο (he was sitting) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ὑπηρετῶν (guards) ἰδεῖν (to see) τὸ (the) τέλος (outcome).

59Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀρχιερεῖς (the chief priests) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) συνέδριον (Council) ὅλον (whole) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) ψευδομαρτυρίαν (false testimony) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ὅπως (so that) αὐτὸν (him) θανατώσωσιν (they might put to death); 60καὶ (but) οὐχ (not any) εὗρον (they found), πολλῶν (of many) προσελθόντων (having come forward as) ψευδομαρτύρων (false witnesses).

Ὕστερον (At last) δὲ (then), προσελθόντες (having come forward) δύο (two), 61εἶπαν (they said), “Οὗτος (This man) ἔφη (has been saying), ‘Δύναμαι (I am able) καταλῦσαι (to destroy) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) διὰ (in) τριῶν (three) ἡμερῶν (days) οἰκοδομῆσαι (to rebuild it).’”

62Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having stood up), ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οὐδὲν (Nothing) ἀποκρίνῃ (answer you)? τί (What) οὗτοί (these) σου (you) καταμαρτυροῦσιν (do witness against)?”

63Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐσιώπα (was silent).

Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἐξορκίζω (I adjure) σε (you) κατὰ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) τοῦ (the) ζῶντος (living), ἵνα (that) ἡμῖν (us) εἴπῃς (You tell) εἰ (if) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

64Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Σὺ (You) εἶπας (have said). πλὴν (But) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀπ’ (from) ἄρτι (now) ὄψεσθε (you will see) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) καθήμενον (sitting) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand) τῆς (-) δυνάμεως (of Power) καὶ (and) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐπὶ (upon) τῶν (the) νεφελῶν (clouds) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (of heaven).”g

65Τότε (Then) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) διέρρηξεν (tears) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of him), λέγων (saying), “Ἐβλασφήμησεν (He has blasphemed); τί (why) ἔτι (any more) χρείαν (need) ἔχομεν (have we) μαρτύρων (of witnesses)? ἴδε (Behold) νῦν (now), ἠκούσατε (you have heard) τὴν (the) βλασφημίαν (blasphemy). 66τί (What) ὑμῖν (you) δοκεῖ (do think)?”

Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering) εἶπαν (they said), “Ἔνοχος (Deserving) θανάτου (of death) ἐστίν (He is).”

67Τότε (Then) ἐνέπτυσαν (they spat) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἐκολάφισαν (struck) αὐτόν (Him). οἱ (Others) δὲ (then) ἐράπισαν (slapped Him), 68λέγοντες (saying), “Προφήτευσον (Prophesy) ἡμῖν (to us), Χριστέ (Christ), τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) παίσας (having struck) σε (You)?”

69Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πέτρος (Peter) ἐκάθητο (was sitting) ἔξω (outside) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) αὐλῇ (court), καὶ (and) προσῆλθεν (came) αὐτῷ (to him) μία (one) παιδίσκη (servant girl), λέγουσα (saying), “Καὶ (Also) σὺ (You) ἦσθα (were) μετὰ (with) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τοῦ (the) Γαλιλαίου (Galilean).”

70Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἠρνήσατο (he denied) ἔμπροσθεν (before) πάντων (all), λέγων (saying), “Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I know) τί (what) λέγεις (you say).”

71Ἐξελθόντα (Having gone out) δὲ (then) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) πυλῶνα (porch), εἶδεν (saw) αὐτὸν (him) ἄλλη (another servant girl), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) τοῖς (to those) ἐκεῖ (there), “Οὗτος (This man) ἦν (was) μετὰ (with) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τοῦ (of) Ναζωραίου (Nazareth).”

72Καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) ἠρνήσατο (he denied) μετὰ (with) ὅρκου (an oath) ὅτι (-), “Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I know) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).”

73Μετὰ (After) μικρὸν (a little while), δὲ (also) προσελθόντες (having come to him) οἱ (those) ἑστῶτες (standing by), εἶπον (they said) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Ἀληθῶς (Surely) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) εἶ (are), καὶ (even) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) λαλιά (speech) σου (of you) δῆλόν (away) σε (you) ποιεῖ (gives).”

74Τότε (Then) ἤρξατο (he began) καταθεματίζειν (to curse) καὶ (and) ὀμνύειν (to swear) ὅτι (-), “Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I know) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man)!”

Καὶ (And) εὐθέως* (immediately) ἀλέκτωρ (a rooster) ἐφώνησεν (crowed).

75Καὶ (And) ἐμνήσθη (remembered) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) τοῦ (the) ῥήματος (word) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), εἰρηκότος (He having said) ὅτι (-), “Πρὶν (Before the) ἀλέκτορα (rooster) φωνῆσαι (crowing), τρὶς (three times) ἀπαρνήσῃ (you will deny) με (Me).” καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone) ἔξω (out), ἔκλαυσεν (he wept) πικρῶς (bitterly).
