Καὶ εὐθὺς πρωῒ συμβούλιον ποιήσαντες* οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον δήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήνεγκαν καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate. And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried [him] away, and delivered [him] to Pilate.
Καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν ὁ Πιλᾶτος Σὺ εἶ ὁ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ λέγει Σὺ λέγεις So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews? “You have said so, Jesus replied. And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest [it].
Καὶ κατηγόρουν αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς πολλά And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.
Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν λέγων Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν ἴδε πόσα σου κατηγοροῦσιν Then Pilate questioned Him again, “ Have You no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against You! And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.
Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίθη ὥστε θαυμάζειν τὸν Πιλᾶτον But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply. But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.
Κατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν ἀπέλυεν αὐτοῖς ἕνα δέσμιον ὃν παρῃτοῦντο Now it was Pilate’s custom at the feast to release to the people a prisoner of their choosing. Now at [that] feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.
ἦν δὲ ὁ λεγόμενος Βαραββᾶς μετὰ τῶν στασιαστῶν δεδεμένος οἵτινες ἐν τῇ στάσει φόνον πεποιήκεισαν And a man named Barabbas was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. And there was [one] named Barabbas, [which lay] bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.
καὶ ἀναβὰς ὁ ὄχλος ἤρξατο αἰτεῖσθαι καθὼς ἐποίει αὐτοῖς So the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to keep his custom. And the multitude crying aloud began to desire [him to do] as he had ever done unto them.
Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων Θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews? Pilate asked. But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
ἐγίνωσκεν γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παραδεδώκεισαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over. For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.
Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ἀνέσεισαν τὸν ὄχλον ἵνα μᾶλλον τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἀπολύσῃ αὐτοῖς But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead. But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.
Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἀποκριθεὶς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Τί οὖν ‹θέλετε› ποιήσω ὃν λέγετε τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων So Pilate asked them again, “What then do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews? And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do [unto him] whom ye call the King of the Jews?
Οἱ δὲ πάλιν ἔκραξαν Σταύρωσον αὐτόν And they shouted back, “Crucify Him! And they cried out again, Crucify him.
“What evil has He done? But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him! Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.
Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος βουλόμενος τῷ ὄχλῳ τὸ ἱκανὸν ποιῆσαι ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν καὶ παρέδωκεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας ἵνα σταυρωθῇ And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified. And [so] Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged [him], to be crucified.
Οἱ δὲ στρατιῶται ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν ἔσω τῆς αὐλῆς ὅ ἐστιν Πραιτώριον καὶ συνκαλοῦσιν ὅλην τὴν σπεῖραν Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called the whole company together. And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.
καὶ ἐνδιδύσκουσιν αὐτὸν πορφύραν καὶ περιτιθέασιν αὐτῷ πλέξαντες ἀκάνθινον στέφανον They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and set it on His head. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his [head],
καὶ ἤρξαντο ἀσπάζεσθαι αὐτόν Χαῖρε Βασιλεῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων And they began to salute Him: “Hail, King of the Jews! And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
Καὶ ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὴν κεφαλὴν καλάμῳ καὶ ἐνέπτυον αὐτῷ καὶ τιθέντες τὰ γόνατα προσεκύνουν αὐτῷ They kept striking His head with a staff and spitting on Him. And they knelt down and bowed before Him. And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing [their] knees worshipped him.
καὶ ὅτε ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὴν πορφύραν καὶ ἐνέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ‹ἴδια› Καὶ ἐξάγουσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα σταυρώσωσιν αὐτόν After they had mocked Him, they removed the purple robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.
Καὶ ἀγγαρεύουσιν παράγοντά τινα Σίμωνα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ’ ἀγροῦ τὸν πατέρα Ἀλεξάνδρου καὶ Ῥούφου ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ Now Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and the soldiers forced him to carry the cross of Jesus. And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Γολγοθᾶν τόπον ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον* Κρανίου τόπος They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull. And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.
καὶ ἐδίδουν αὐτῷ ἐσμυρνισμένον οἶνον ὃς δὲ οὐκ ἔλαβεν There they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it. And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received [it] not.
Καὶ σταυροῦσιν αὐτὸν καὶ διαμερίζονται τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον ἐπ’ αὐτὰ τίς τί ἄρῃ And they crucified Him. They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take. And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.
Ἦν δὲ ὥρα τρίτη καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν It was the third hour when they crucified Him. And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.
καὶ ἦν ἡ ἐπιγραφὴ τῆς αἰτίας αὐτοῦ ἐπιγεγραμμένη Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ And the charge inscribed against Him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ σταυροῦσιν δύο λῃστάς ἕνα ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ ἕνα ἐξ εὐωνύμων αὐτοῦ Along with Jesus, they crucified two robbers, one on His right and one on His left. And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.
⧼Καὶ ἐπληρώθη ἡ γραφὴ ἡ λέγουσα Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη⧽ And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
Καὶ οἱ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ λέγοντες Οὐὰ ὁ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ οἰκοδομῶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest [it] in three days,
σῶσον σεαυτὸν καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ come down from the cross and save Yourself! Save thyself, and come down from the cross.
Ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων ἔλεγον Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.
ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ Βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ πιστεύσωμεν καὶ οἱ συνεσταυρωμένοι σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe! And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him. Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.
Καὶ γενομένης ὥρας ἕκτης σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
καὶ τῇ ἐνάτῃ ὥρᾳ ἐβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἐλωῒ Ἐλωῒ λεμὰ* σαβαχθάνι* ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Ὁ Θεός μου ὁ Θεός μου εἰς τί ἐγκατέλιπές με At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Καί τινες τῶν παρεστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον Ἴδε Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said, “Behold, He is calling Elijah. And some of them that stood by, when they heard [it], said, Behold, he calleth Elias.
Δραμὼν δέ τις καὶ γεμίσας σπόγγον ὄξους περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν λέγων Ἄφετε ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας καθελεῖν αὐτόν And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine. He put it on a reed and held it up for Jesus to drink, saying, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down. And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put [it] on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην ἐξέπνευσεν But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
Καὶ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη εἰς δύο ἀπ’ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ κεντυρίων ὁ παρεστηκὼς ἐξ ἐναντίας αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως ἐξέπνευσεν εἶπεν Ἀληθῶς οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος Υἱὸς Θεοῦ ἦν When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how He had breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God! And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
Ἦσαν δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι ἐν αἷς καὶ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ἡ Ἰακώβου τοῦ μικροῦ καὶ Ἰωσῆτος μήτηρ καὶ Σαλώμη And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;
αἳ ὅτε ἦν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ καὶ διηκόνουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἄλλαι πολλαὶ αἱ συναναβᾶσαι αὐτῷ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα These women had followed Jesus and ministered to Him while He was in Galilee, and there were many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him. (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him; ) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.
Καὶ ἤδη ὀψίας γενομένης ἐπεὶ ἦν Παρασκευή ὅ ἐστιν προσάββατον Now it was already evening. Since it was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,
ἐλθὼν Ἰωσὴφ ὁ ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας εὐσχήμων βουλευτής ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν προσδεχόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ τολμήσας εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς τὸν Πιλᾶτον καὶ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.
Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἐθαύμασεν εἰ ἤδη τέθνηκεν καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν κεντυρίωνα ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν εἰ πάλαι ἀπέθανεν Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if this was so. And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling [unto him] the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.
καὶ γνοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ κεντυρίωνος ἐδωρήσατο τὸ πτῶμα τῷ Ἰωσήφ When Pilate had confirmed it with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. And when he knew [it] of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
Καὶ ἀγοράσας σινδόνα καθελὼν αὐτὸν ἐνείλησεν τῇ σινδόνι καὶ ἔθηκεν* αὐτὸν ἐν μνημείῳ* ὃ ἦν λελατομημένον ἐκ πέτρας καὶ προσεκύλισεν λίθον ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τοῦ μνημείου So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus, wrapped it in the cloth, and placed it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.
ἡ δὲ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία ἡ Ἰωσῆτος ἐθεώρουν ποῦ τέθειται Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where His body was placed. And Mary Magdalene and Mary [the mother] of Joses beheld where he was laid.
