1[Jesus] went on from there and came to His hometown, accompanied by His disciples. 1Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν καὶ ἔρχεται εἰς τὴν πατρίδα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθοῦσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ
2[When] [the] Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard [Him] were astonished. “Where [did] this [man get] these [ideas]?” they asked. “What [is] [this] wisdom He has been given? And [how can] He perform such miracles? 2καὶ γενομένου σαββάτου ἤρξατο διδάσκειν ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ καὶ οἱ πολλοὶ ἀκούοντες ἐξεπλήσσοντο λέγοντες Πόθεν τούτῳ ταῦτα καὶ τίς ἡ σοφία ἡ δοθεῖσα τούτῳ καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις τοιαῦται διὰ τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ γινόμεναι
3Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and [the] brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t His sisters here with us as well?” And they took offense at Him. 3οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ τέκτων ὁ υἱὸς τῆς Μαρίας καὶ ἀδελφὸς Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωσῆτος καὶ Ἰούδα καὶ Σίμωνος καὶ οὐκ εἰσὶν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ αὐτοῦ ὧδε πρὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐσκανδαλίζοντο ἐν αὐτῷ
4Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is without honor only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his [own] household.” 4Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Οὐκ ἔστιν προφήτης ἄτιμος εἰ μὴ ἐν τῇ πατρίδι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τοῖς συγγενεῦσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ
5[So] He could not perform [any] miracles there, except to lay [His] hands on a few of the sick [and] heal [them]. 5καὶ οὐκ ἐδύνατο ἐκεῖ ποιῆσαι οὐδεμίαν δύναμιν εἰ μὴ ὀλίγοις ἀρρώστοις ἐπιθεὶς τὰς χεῖρας ἐθεράπευσεν
6And amazed at their unbelief, He went around teaching from village to village. 6καὶ ἐθαύμαζεν* διὰ τὴν ἀπιστίαν αὐτῶν Καὶ περιῆγεν τὰς κώμας κύκλῳ διδάσκων
7Then [Jesus] called the Twelve {to Him} and began to send them out two [by] two, giving them authority over unclean spirits. 7Καὶ προσκαλεῖται τοὺς δώδεκα καὶ ἤρξατο αὐτοὺς ἀποστέλλειν δύο δύο καὶ ἐδίδου αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τῶν πνευμάτων τῶν ἀκαθάρτων
8He instructed them to take nothing but a staff for [the] journey— no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— 8καὶ παρήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδὲν αἴρωσιν εἰς ὁδὸν εἰ μὴ ῥάβδον μόνον μὴ ἄρτον μὴ πήραν μὴ εἰς τὴν ζώνην χαλκόν
9[and] to wear sandals, [but] not a second tunic. 9ἀλλὰ ὑποδεδεμένους σανδάλια καὶ μὴ ἐνδύσησθε δύο χιτῶνας
10And He told them, “When you enter a house, stay there until you leave [that town]. 10Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ὅπου ἐὰν εἰσέλθητε εἰς οἰκίαν ἐκεῖ μένετε ἕως ἂν ἐξέλθητε ἐκεῖθεν
11If anyone will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that place, as a testimony against them.” 11καὶ ὃς ἂν τόπος μὴ δέξηται ὑμᾶς μηδὲ ἀκούσωσιν ὑμῶν ἐκπορευόμενοι ἐκεῖθεν ἐκτινάξατε τὸν χοῦν τὸν ὑποκάτω τῶν ποδῶν ὑμῶν εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς ⧼Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται Σοδόμοις ἢ Γομόρροις ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως ἢ τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ⧽
12[So] they went out [and] preached that [the people] should repent. 12Καὶ ἐξελθόντες ἐκήρυξαν ἵνα μετανοῶσιν
13They also drove out many demons and healed many of the sick, anointing [them] with oil. 13καὶ δαιμόνια πολλὰ ἐξέβαλλον καὶ ἤλειφον ἐλαίῳ πολλοὺς ἀρρώστους καὶ ἐθεράπευον
14Now King Herod heard about this, for [Jesus’] name had become well known, and [people] were saying, “John the Baptist has risen from [the] dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” 14Καὶ ἤκουσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἡρῴδης φανερὸν γὰρ ἐγένετο τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἰωάννης ὁ Βαπτίζων ἐγήγερται ἐκ νεκρῶν καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἐνεργοῦσιν αἱ δυνάμεις ἐν αὐτῷ
15Others said, “He is Elijah,” and still others, “[He is] a prophet, like one of the prophets [of old].” 15ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἠλίας ἐστίν ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον ὅτι Προφήτης ὡς εἷς τῶν προφητῶν
16But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised [from the dead]!” 16Ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἡρῴδης ἔλεγεν Ὃν ἐγὼ ἀπεκεφάλισα Ἰωάννην οὗτος ἠγέρθη
17For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound [and] imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, [whom] [Herod] had married. 17Αὐτὸς γὰρ ὁ Ἡρῴδης ἀποστείλας ἐκράτησεν τὸν Ἰωάννην καὶ ἔδησεν αὐτὸν ἐν φυλακῇ διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ ὅτι αὐτὴν ἐγάμησεν
18For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife!” 18ἔλεγεν γὰρ ὁ Ἰωάννης τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ ὅτι Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου
19So Herodias held a grudge against [John] and wanted to kill him. But she had been unable, 19Ἡ δὲ Ἡρῳδιὰς ἐνεῖχεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἤθελεν αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο
20because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing he [was] a righteous and holy man. When he heard [John’s words], he was greatly perplexed; yet he listened to him gladly. 20ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης ἐφοβεῖτο τὸν Ἰωάννην εἰδὼς αὐτὸν ἄνδρα δίκαιον καὶ ἅγιον καὶ συνετήρει αὐτόν καὶ ἀκούσας αὐτοῦ πολλὰ ἠπόρει καὶ ἡδέως αὐτοῦ ἤκουεν
21On [Herod’s] birthday, [her] opportunity arose. Herod held a banquet for his nobles and military commanders, as well as the leading [men] of Galilee. 21Καὶ γενομένης ἡμέρας εὐκαίρου ὅτε Ἡρῴδης τοῖς γενεσίοις αὐτοῦ δεῖπνον ἐποίησεν τοῖς μεγιστᾶσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῖς χιλιάρχοις καὶ τοῖς πρώτοις τῆς Γαλιλαίας
22[When] the daughter of Herodias came and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests, and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give [it] to you.” 22καὶ εἰσελθούσης τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτῆς τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος καὶ ὀρχησαμένης ἤρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ καὶ τοῖς συνανακειμένοις «ὁ 〈δὲ〉 βασιλεὺς» εἶπεν τῷ κορασίῳ Αἴτησόν με ὃ ἐὰν θέλῃς καὶ δώσω σοι
23And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom!” 23καὶ ὤμοσεν αὐτῇ [Πολλά] Ὅ¦τι ἐάν με αἰτήσῃς δώσω σοι ἕως ἡμίσους τῆς βασιλείας μου
24Then she went out [and] said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” And [Herodias] answered, “The head of John the Baptist.” 24Καὶ ἐξελθοῦσα εἶπεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς Τί αἰτήσωμαι Ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτίζοντος
25At once [the girl] hurried back to the king with her request: “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately.” 25Καὶ εἰσελθοῦσα εὐθὺς μετὰ σπουδῆς πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα ᾐτήσατο λέγουσα Θέλω ἵνα ἐξαυτῆς δῷς μοι ἐπὶ πίνακι τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ
26The king was overwhelmed with sorrow, but because of [his] oaths and his guests, he did not want to refuse her. 26Καὶ περίλυπος γενόμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς διὰ τοὺς ὅρκους καὶ τοὺς ἀνακειμένους οὐκ ἠθέλησεν ἀθετῆσαι αὐτήν
27So without delay, the king commanded that John’s head be brought in. He sent an executioner who went [and] beheaded him in the prison. 27καὶ εὐθὺς ἀποστείλας ὁ βασιλεὺς σπεκουλάτορα ἐπέταξεν ἐνέγκαι τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἀπεκεφάλισεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
28[The man] brought [John’s] head on a platter and presented it to the girl, [who] gave it to her mother. 28καὶ ἤνεγκεν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῷ κορασίῳ καὶ τὸ κοράσιον ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς
29When [John’s] disciples heard about [this], they came and took his body and laid it in [a] tomb. 29καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦλθον* καὶ ἦραν τὸ πτῶμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔθηκαν αὐτὸ ἐν μνημείῳ
30Meanwhile, the apostles gathered around Jesus and brought Him news of all they had done and taught. 30Καὶ συνάγονται οἱ ἀπόστολοι πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν αὐτῷ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησαν καὶ ὅσα ἐδίδαξαν
31And He said to them, “Come with Me privately to [a] solitary place, and let us rest for a while.” For many [people] were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. 31καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Δεῦτε ὑμεῖς αὐτοὶ κατ’ ἰδίαν εἰς ἔρημον τόπον καὶ ἀναπαύσασθε ὀλίγον ἦσαν γὰρ οἱ ἐρχόμενοι καὶ οἱ ὑπάγοντες πολλοί καὶ οὐδὲ φαγεῖν εὐκαίρουν
32So they went away in a boat by themselves to a solitary place. 32Καὶ ἀπῆλθον ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατ’ ἰδίαν
33But many [people] saw them leaving and recognized [them]. They ran together on foot from all the towns and arrived before them. 33καὶ εἶδον αὐτοὺς ὑπάγοντας καὶ ἐπέγνωσαν πολλοί καὶ πεζῇ ἀπὸ πασῶν τῶν πόλεων συνέδραμον ἐκεῖ καὶ προῆλθον αὐτούς
34When [Jesus] stepped ashore [and] saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things. 34Καὶ ἐξελθὼν εἶδεν πολὺν ὄχλον καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ὅτι ἦσαν ὡς πρόβατα μὴ ἔχοντα ποιμένα καὶ ἤρξατο διδάσκειν αὐτοὺς πολλά
35By now the hour was already late. [So] the disciples came to [Jesus] [and] said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour [is] already late. 35Καὶ ἤδη ὥρας πολλῆς γενομένης προσελθόντες αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἔρημός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος καὶ ἤδη ὥρα πολλή
36Dismiss [the crowd] so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages [and] buy themselves something to eat.” 36ἀπόλυσον αὐτούς ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τοὺς κύκλῳ ἀγροὺς καὶ κώμας ἀγοράσωσιν ἑαυτοῖς τί φάγωσιν
37But [Jesus] told them, “You give them [something] to eat.” They asked Him, “Should we go out [and] spend two hundred denarii to give all of them bread to eat?” 37Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν Καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ἀπελθόντες ἀγοράσωμεν δηναρίων διακοσίων ἄρτους καὶ δώσομεν αὐτοῖς φαγεῖν
38“Go [and] see how many loaves you have,” He told them. And after checking they said, “Five, and two fish.” 38Ὁ δὲ λέγει αὐτοῖς Πόσους ἔχετε ἄρτους ὑπάγετε ἴδετε Καὶ γνόντες λέγουσιν Πέντε καὶ δύο ἰχθύας
39Then [Jesus] directed them to have [the people] sit in groups on the green grass. 39Καὶ ἐπέταξεν αὐτοῖς ἀνακλῖναι* πάντας συμπόσια συμπόσια ἐπὶ τῷ χλωρῷ χόρτῳ
40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 40καὶ ἀνέπεσαν πρασιαὶ πρασιαὶ κατὰ ἑκατὸν καὶ κατὰ πεντήκοντα
41Taking the five loaves and the two fish [and] looking up to heaven, [Jesus] spoke a blessing and broke the loaves. Then He gave [them] to His disciples to set before [the people]. And He divided the two fish among them all. 41Καὶ λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησεν καὶ κατέκλασεν τοὺς ἄρτους καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς ‹αὐτοῦ› ἵνα παρατιθῶσιν αὐτοῖς καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἐμέρισεν πᾶσιν
42{They} all ate and were satisfied, 42Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν
43and [the disciples] picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 43καὶ ἦραν κλάσματα δώδεκα κοφίνων πληρώματα καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἰχθύων
44And there were five thousand men who ate the loaves. 44καὶ ἦσαν οἱ φαγόντες τοὺς ἄρτους πεντακισχίλιοι ἄνδρες
45Immediately [Jesus] made His disciples get into the boat and cross over ahead of [Him] to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd. 45Καὶ εὐθὺς ἠνάγκασεν τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν εἰς τὸ πέραν πρὸς Βηθσαϊδάν ἕως αὐτὸς ἀπολύει τὸν ὄχλον
46After bidding them farewell, He went up on the mountain to pray. 46καὶ ἀποταξάμενος αὐτοῖς ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸ ὄρος προσεύξασθαι
47When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and [Jesus was] alone on land. 47Καὶ ὀψίας γενομένης ἦν τὸ πλοῖον ἐν μέσῳ τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ αὐτὸς μόνος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς
48He could see that [the disciples] were straining to row, because the wind was against them. About [the] fourth watch of the night, [Jesus] went out to them, walking on the sea. He intended to pass by them, 48καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτοὺς βασανιζομένους ἐν τῷ ἐλαύνειν ἦν γὰρ ὁ ἄνεμος ἐναντίος αὐτοῖς περὶ τετάρτην φυλακὴν τῆς νυκτὸς ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ ἤθελεν παρελθεῖν αὐτούς
49but when they saw Him walking on the sea, they cried out, thinking [He] was a ghost— 49οἱ δὲ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπατοῦντα ἔδοξαν ὅτι φάντασμά ἐστιν καὶ ἀνέκραξαν
50for they all saw Him and were terrified. But [Jesus] spoke up at once: “Take courage! [It] is I. {Do} not be afraid.” 50πάντες γὰρ αὐτὸν εἶδον* καὶ ἐταράχθησαν ὁ Δὲ εὐθὺς ἐλάλησεν μετ’ αὐτῶν καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Θαρσεῖτε ἐγώ εἰμι μὴ φοβεῖσθε
51Then He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. And [the disciples were] utterly astounded, 51καὶ ἀνέβη πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος καὶ λίαν ἐκ περισσοῦ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἐξίσταντο
52for they had not understood about the loaves, but their hearts had been hardened. 52οὐ γὰρ συνῆκαν ἐπὶ τοῖς ἄρτοις ἀλλ’ ἦν αὐτῶν ἡ καρδία πεπωρωμένη
53When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret, [where] they moored the boat. 53Καὶ διαπεράσαντες ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἦλθον εἰς Γεννησαρὲτ καὶ προσωρμίσθησαν
54As soon as they got out of the boat, [the people] recognized [Jesus] 54καὶ ἐξελθόντων αὐτῶν ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου εὐθὺς ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν
55[and] ran through that whole region, carrying the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was. 55περιέδραμον ὅλην τὴν χώραν ἐκείνην καὶ ἤρξαντο ἐπὶ τοῖς κραβάττοις τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας περιφέρειν ὅπου ἤκουον ὅτι ἐστίν
56And wherever He went— villages [and] towns [and] countrysides— they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged Him to let them just touch the fringe of His cloak. And all who touched Him were healed. 56καὶ ὅπου ἂν εἰσεπορεύετο εἰς κώμας ἢ εἰς πόλεις ἢ εἰς ἀγροὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς ἐτίθεσαν τοὺς ἀσθενοῦντας καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα κἂν τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ ἅψωνται καὶ ὅσοι ἂν ἥψαντο αὐτοῦ ἐσῴζοντο
